The bad thing about being a human in a school full of supernaturals was that one would be considered a ‘Unique.’ As Syanna had gathered from Juliet, the Uniques were the rare supernaturals in the academy.
In this particular class, the supernaturals who weren’t common studied together. It was a cool group, with an actual banshee and gargoyle. Syanna didn’t even know those things existed.
The class consisted of about twenty people, with two or three creatures alike, and of course, the human, Syanna.
The good thing was Juliet was also in this class. The bad thing was, so was Cole.
And right now, he was perched on a girl’s desk, and Syanna’s chest had been squeezing since the second he started talking to her.
The girl seemed utterly annoyed by his presence, but the way he smirked at her proved that they knew each other quite well, even if that wasn’t in a good way.
The girl's eyes were blue and diamond-like—like most of the high witches in the school—and her hair was jet black, falling to her waist without a curl. Her skin was pale, but her cheeks were blood red—either with blush or anger. Syanna couldn’t tell.
She watched as Cole spoke to her, touching her head ever so often, at which she’d slap his hand away. The sharp pain squeezed Syanna’s heart even more as she watched their interaction. They seemed like lovers…those lovers who didn’t know it yet, but they’d fall in love pretty soon after their odd love-hate relationship. And strangely, it made Syanna upset.
Why? She had no clue. But Syanna knew that Cole was very much aware of her presence and her eyes watching him, and she shamelessly stared at him as he spoke to the black-haired girl.
“You are embarrassing,” Juliet said, finally breaking Syanna’s gaze from Cole.
Syanna didn’t even flinch at Juliet’s insult as she asked, “Who is that girl?”
“Talk softly,” Juliet scolded. “Almost everyone in this school has supernatural hearing, and the uniques are no different.”
“Right.” Syanna made a mental note to remember to keep her gossiping to below whisper average.
“Anyway, that’s Genevieve. She—”
“Wait, Genevieve?” That was the name Cole mentioned yesterday when he ‘confronted’ her.
“Keep it down,” Juliet scolded in a harsh whisper. “Anyways, yeah, that’s her. She’s a witch and—”
“If she’s a witch, what is she doing in a class for the uniques?” Syanna heard the malice in her voice, and it was all because of jealousy. She had no idea why she was even jealous. Cole practically hated her, and he didn’t know who she was. So, why did she want more?
She felt pathetic.“If you would allow me to finish,” Juliet said with an eye roll. “She’s a witch, werewolf, oracle and something else. It’s none of my business. But they are perfect for each other.”
It came like a blow to Syanna’s chest. “Genevieve and Cole? Why?”Juliet narrowed her eyes as she stared at Syanna. “Oh my gosh, you’re jealous.”
“Well—”
“You do like they bastard? Don’t you?”
“I—”
“Wait, don’t tell me.” Juliet cut her off, looking terrified. “Because if you do, then I’ll have no choice but to do everything I can to set you up.”
“No, you don’t,” Syanna laughed. “You don’t even like him.”
“I’m a cupid, Syanna. It’s sort of in my job description. My point is, if I know there is some affection, I wouldn’t be able to help it.”
“Is that the reason they dampen your powers?” Syanna asked, and Juliet’s face instantly fell with hurt.
Syanna thought it was unfair that the cupids’ powers were dampened when literal freaking vampires and dragons roamed the halls free. But apparently, there was an incident with a cupid a few years ago, and someone died. They claim that love is the strongest power of all, and too much of it could be detrimental.
So, the three cupids here at Unici Academy, including Juliet, had their powers dampened upon admission. Juliet acted as if she didn’t mind, but unlike Syanna, who had just come to Unici, Juliet had been here for three years. Surely, she missed her powers.“That’s not the point, anyway,” Juliet said, putting on her best smile. “Genevieve and Cole have history, but not like you think.”
“What do you mean then?” Syanna asked, trying desperately to hide her relief.Juliet glanced around, although they were at the back of the lecture hall and leaned closer to Syanna.
“Genevieve was the one who brought him here. But the headmistress had no idea that Cole was being taken to the academy.”
Syanna frowned. “I thought the headmistress sought out all students here. How could she not have known?”
Juliet shrugged. “It’s still a mystery. Some say Genevieve was given the order by a higher being, since she’s an oracle and all. Some said she was under a spell. But all I know is Cole had hated her guts since the night she brought him here, and he had made her life a living hell since.”
“She hadn’t told him why she brought him here?”
Juliet shrugged. “She claims it was an order, but she wouldn’t say anything more.”Syanna nodded, seeing how it all came together. “So he does this all the time?”
She watched as he said something to Genevieve that evidently pissed her off more—if that was even possible. It was in moments like these that Syanna wished she had supernatural hearing too.
“Well, come to think of it, he hadn’t bothered her in quite a while, actually.” Juliet pursed her lips as she thought about it. “Perhaps a full year if I remember correctly. But anyway, Cole never changes, and he will continue teasing Genevieve until one of them either dies or leaves. And as it stands, none seem logical right now.”
Syanna nodded but decided not to reply. She had no idea why she was happy that Cole hated Genevieve. But one thing she knew, was that she definitely wasn’t going to entertain this feeling.
Yet, she still wanted to know more about him. She wanted to understand why it felt like her entire body was going up in flames when he touched her. She wanted to know why she dreamt of him every single night since their first encounter, and couldn’t quite find the will to date anyone else after they met that night at the diner. She wanted to know why her dreams stopped as soon as she came to Unici, and she wanted—no needed to know what the hell his deal was.
Why did he threaten her? How could he have forgotten her so easily?
It killed her to know.
As if feeling her eyes on him, Cole inclined his head in Syanna’s direction, meeting her gaze with his golden eyes. The logical thing to do would’ve been to look away. But Syanna found herself staring at him with a sharp intensity that made her skin tingle.
He didn’t break eye contact either until Genevieve followed his gaze towards Syanna, where she stared at them in slight confusion. Genevieve took this as her chance to escape and slid from her chair and towards the door before Cole could notice.
It then became clear to Syanna. If she wanted to know the truth about Cole, who else to go to but the person who probably knew him best? Even if they did hate each other. And if Genevieve is indeed a witch, perhaps she could explain the dreams and odd connection that Syanna had with Cole.
But just as Syanna was about to move from her seat to go after Genevieve, their professor entered with a book big enough to document the history of the entire world, and Syanna knew she wasn’t getting out of there anytime soon.
***
As soon as the class was over, Syanna bid Juliet goodbye and dashed towards the door. She had no idea where Genevieve had gone in this massive academy, but hell, she was determined to find her.How hard could it be to find a witch-werewolf-oracle?
“Genevieve doesn’t like to be found.” This came from a voice behind her. Syanna yelped and swerved around, being met with Cole and a stupid smirk on his perfectly stupid face.
“How did you...”
“You were talking to yourself out loud,” Cole said, causing Syanna to burn bright red. “And like I said, if Genevieve isn't in the open, you won’t be able to find her. Besides, she’s not going to tell you anything, anyway. She’s not a people person.”
Syanna squinted her eyes. She tried desperately not to allow his presence to affect her, but she couldn’t help it. He still towered over her by at least seven inches, and his bright, golden eyes gave nothing away to how he felt. The black shirt he wore hugged his lean biceps like a glove, and his lips...
Gosh, his lips.
Syanna caught herself staring and composed herself as she replied. “You seem to know a lot about her.”
This, of course, only caused Cole’s smirk to widen. “Is that why you were asking about us?”
If it was even possible, she burned even brighter. “How... I wasn’t... You’re annoying.”
Stupid supernatural hearing.
“Am I? Or do you just hate being called out?”
“Whatever. It’s not important, anyway.”
The hallway was getting empty as the students went along their way. Syanna tried to think of a quick way to escape, but nothing made sense in her head.
“If it isn’t important,” Cole said, “Then why are you seeking out Genevieve.” Then, his smirk fell out of nowhere, and his eyes grew dark as he pinned her against the wall.
Syanna gasped at the sudden heat that swamped her body and the tingles she felt as he grabbed her hands and lifted them above her head. Her chest heaved as his breathing grew shallow. She could see that Cole was affected, too, though it was far from his intention. But he composed himself as he growled at her.“I hope you know I will still make good on my promise,” he said as his breath fanned her nose. “You did something to me and cost me something really important yesterday.”
“I did nothing to you,” Syanna managed through a short breath. “You don’t even know me.”
Cole’s lips curled with a smirk, but it wasn’t teasing like before. “But you know me, don’t you?” he asked. “I can see it in the way you look at me. You can’t deny it now. Why else would you be so interested in me to the point of seeking out Genevieve?”
Syanna felt her own anger and annoyance growing as she tried to wiggle from his grip. The cropped sweater she wore today had ridden up to the base of her breasts when Cole lifted her hands over her head. And the cold air fanning her bare skin, along with the heat she felt between them, was doing something strange to her.
“You’re a narcissistic psychopath,” she spat. “I have done nothing to you. I’m a human girl from a small town, and I want nothing to do with you.”
He finally released her hands but didn’t move away from her. In fact, he stepped even closer to her, now allowing their bodies to touch.
“So what do you think Genevieve will tell you?”
“Oh my gosh!” She threw her hands in the air with an exasperated sigh. “I’ve been here for one day, Cole. One! What could I have possibly done that makes you so damn paranoid and crazy! You do realise you’re acting like a crazy person, right?”
“Says the human at a school full of supernaturals. Who looks crazier?”
“This isn’t a damn competition, Cole,” she said, pushing against his chest. But he didn’t even budge. “My point is, I have no reason to be messing with you. And the sooner you learn that, the better it will be for both of us.”
This time, Cole didn’t reply. He simply stared at her with a blank expression. But Syanna couldn’t ignore his ragged breathing and clenched fists. He put on a good show, but she could see that she affected him just as much as he affected her.
“But you know something,” Cole said as he caged her in with his arms. “And I will find out what it—”He didn’t finish his statement. The brick he had braced on sank into the wall like a button, and in a second, they were in another room—a completely different room than the hallway they had just been in.
“What the hell just happened?” Syanna demanded as she peered around. The walls were stacked with books from the floor to the ceiling, with a single couch in the centre of the room.
“Fucking witches,” Cole cursed, seeming utterly annoyed.
“What do you mean? How did we get in here?” Syanna asked. She could already feel her chest getting tight from the tiny room. She hated small spaces.
“The witches make secret rooms all over the campus,” Cole explained. “Once in a while, someone gets trapped in them because nobody knows they even fucking exist.”
Syanna’s heartbeat grew faster as she focused on one word he said. “Trapped? What do you mean trapped?”
Cole met her eyes with his teasing smirk back in place. “It means you’re stuck with me, Syanna...”
He crossed the room towards her, wrapped her ponytail around his hand and inclined her head, so she was staring him right in the eyes.
“All alone.”
Cole didn’t plan for this to happen. He didn’t get up this morning and decide that he’d push on a stupid brick and get him and Syanna stuck in a witch’s secret library. Yet, he couldn’t deny the fact that he liked it. She looked terrified, that was for sure. And Cole didn’t know if he liked it or not. On one end, this seemed like what she deserved. But on the other hand, seeing her in pain made his chest feel weird. She was pacing the tiny room with her hands in her long, silky hair. Cole couldn’t help but wonder how soft it was, and her big brown eyes were wide in terror. He also noticed how her breaths had gotten shorter and heavier, but he knew it wasn’t because of his presence this time. She obviously didn't like tiny, cramped places. Cole had two choices. He could either relish in the sight of her in pain, knowing that it would be what she deserved for doing whatever the hell she did to him. Or, he could actually try to help her. Help her? He has never helped anyone b
Screw bad decisions. Screw regrets and everything bit of self-loathing she would feel after this moment. Because right now, all Syanna wanted was to feel more of Cole. She knew it was a bad idea from the start to sit beside him. She wasn’t sure if he was aware, but something in his eyes and his entire aura was seductive. They undoubtedly had a connection that she still couldn’t seem to understand, too. So, the moment he held her, she was done for. And now he had his nose buried in her neck, driving her crazy with just the bare hint of his breath fanning against her. It was warm, and by the second, it grew hotter as his fingers dug into her waist and his body drew closer to her. “What is it about you, Syanna?” Cole mumbled, but Syanna could tell it wasn’t a question to be answered. “From the minute I saw you yesterday, you have been doing something to me that no one has ever done before. No one.”“I’m sorry,” she found herself saying, completely forgetting that she was mad at him f
It’s been a week. An entire week had passed, and Cole had made it his duty to ignore Syanna at all costs. He would see her and snarl at her, but he wouldn’t say a single word to her. Syanna didn’t know why. On one hand, she assumed he was still upset about the entire ‘stuck in a witch’s library and almost kissing’ thing, not that it was any fault of hers. But deep down, Syanna knew he was avoiding her because of what she saw. It puzzled her. Because Cole didn’t seem like the type of person to be ashamed of his darkness. From what she’s gathered from Juliet, Cole was a devil in the body of a handsome phoenix. He never changed or hid from anyone. So, she had no idea why he would start now. Maybe she should’ve just left him alone. Perhaps that was best. But every time she closed her eyes, she would remember the feeling of his breath against her neck, and she’d ache for more. Gosh, how she wanted more of him. And she hated herself for it. She felt like a love-sick fool. This
It happened again. The second the vampires arrived, Cole’s eyes grew dark. And if it was even possible, they were darker than they were the first time it happened. Syanna jumped from her seated position as more and more vampires arrived at the border. It was about twenty against Cole and Isaac, and Syanna knew it was an unfair match. “Don’t,” Cole warned without looking at her, as if sensing that she was about to approach them. “Stay behind the border.” “But why?” a vampire asked through a snarl. His blood-red eyes watched Syanna as if she was the garnish on his plate. She knew he was the leader from his position and the way the others were arranged around him. “You’re not getting anywhere near her,” Cole growled, and the other vampires shrunk back as the grass beneath his feet shrivelled and turned black. Syanna gulped as she watched the encounter. She wanted to scream, run, and, most of all, cry. She wanted to cry because a group of vampires was ready to have her head,
In a minute when it felt like the world had utterly stopped spinning, Syanna didn’t know what to do besides scream. One moment she was trying to stop Cole from committing murder, and in the next, someone or something had grabbed her from behind. Isaac was the only one who saw it coming. He had been pushing against the barrier and growling at something behind her. But Syanna had been too consumed in Cole to notice, and Cole was too busy threatening the vampires. Either way, he wouldn’t be able to help. He was behind the barrier, and there was no way that Syanna could run back to the other side now. It was too late. The sun had started to dip beneath the hills, and the birds flew to their respective homes in flocks of blue and green. At least she’d go peacefully. At least she could watch the beauty of nature as this vampire--because she was sure that he was--would kill her. The minute it all became clear to Cole, his eyes widened, and he launched forward, but was stopped by the barr
Was this what death felt like? Was it supposed to be dazy, crippling and even painful? Syanna didn’t think so. But who was she to know what death felt like? She had never really died before, until now. There was mumbling in the background, and she shuffled in her spot, thinking it might be her parents. Were they waiting for her? Would she be at peace with them, knowing she lived a good 20 years, and that now Cole was free? Cole. Gosh, she remembered the look on his face when that vampire grabbed her. The look of utter pain and agony, and he didn’t even like her. She remembered how he pushed passed that barrier, trying to save her. What force was so greater than the headmistress’s barrier, that Cole, of all people, managed to break through solely to save her? It couldn’t be what she thought it was. It was too soon--far too soon. They barely even shared a proper conversation other than the night two years ago, and he didn’t even remember that moment. So it couldn’t be what she th
Cole came back. He wasn’t halfway across the country, and he wasn’t relishing his freedom. Because, for sure, Cole was standing right in front of them at Genevieve’s door. The witch seemed just as shocked as Syanna. More than anyone else, Genevieve knew how much Cole craved to be free—that he’d do absolutely nothing for his freedom. Yet, here he was. He glanced over Genevieve’s shoulder and met eyes with Syanna, and her stomach erupted in a bundle of butterflies and lit with fire. It was the most amazing feeling she’s ever felt. Cole crossed the room towards her, not even sparing Genevieve or Isaac a glance as he sat beside Syanna. He reached forward, as if he was about to touch her face, but quickly retreated his hand when he realised what he was about to do. But Syanna grabbed it and placed her cheeks in his warm palms. Her eyes fluttered closed as she relished the tingling sensation that ran through her body when he touched her. If Cole even knew what he did to her, he would’
She was heaven on earth. Syanna was the most majestic creature Cole had ever touched, and he didn’t want this moment to end. He hadn’t intended on kissing her today. Hell, all he cared about was keeping her safe and alive. But when she touched him—when she held him and told him to kiss her, he was done for. Although she was the one who suggested the kiss, she seemed timid at first as her lips moved against hers in a slow, teasing caress. Her lips were sweet and soft like he had always imagined. She gripped his shirt for dear life and sank her fingers into his hair with her other hand. She felt pure; she tasted new as if she’s never been kissed before. And quite frankly, Cole loved the idea. He didn’t know why he didn’t take the opportunity to dash for the hills the second he killed that Vechi vampire. He had tried—oh, he tried. He just stood there, staring at the dead vampire and the blood dripping from his hands. Then, he glanced at the trees and bushes he had burnt around him,
It had been six hours since Genevieve was still not back yet. But Cole wasn’t worried about her. No matter how long she was away, he knew she could take care of herself. So there really was no reason for him to worry about her. He knew she didn’t walk there this time. She must’ve taken a portal or something, so she shouldn’t have taken to long to return. But Cole tried not to let it bother him so much. He had to stay calm. Yet, he couldn’t help his nerved. Because if something happened to Genevieve, then that meant he might never get Syanna back. And, hell, the thought was scary. It that didn’t stop the feeling he had in his stomach every passing second. It was almost the same like what he felt the first time he realised that something bad would happen to Syanna, and to think that something else might happen when Genevieve wasn’t here made his stomach ache. There was no way he would’ve known what to do if something were to indeed happen. And if anything happened to Isaac or Sya
Cole was relieved Genevieve was back from the academy, although she won't talk about the demon attack on her last night. He tried to pry it out of her, but she remained tight-lipped. Cole couldn't blame her, though. His own experience with demons had taught him that sometimes, speaking about them could lead to even more trouble. While Genevieve locked herself away in her room, Cole headed out to find the demon that attacked her. He was determined to put an end to it before it harmed anyone else.As he roamed the streets, he kept his senses sharp. He could feel the demon's presence nearby, but it was elusive, flitting from shadow to shadow, never staying in one place for too long. It was like chasing a ghost. Finally, after hours of fruitless searching, Cole saw the demon. It was a hulking beast, towering over him, with skin as black as night and eyes that glowed like embers. Its wings were torn and ragged, and its claws glinted in the moonlight.Cole didn't hesitate. He drew his sword

Two hours had passed since Genevieve left, and Cole was begging to get antsy. He moved from his seat to the chair next to Syanna’s side of the bed, where he held her hand. He knew that her body was practically lifeless, and the real Syanna was inside of Isaac, but he couldn’t sit in front of Isaac and talk to her. It would just seem too weird. “Hey,” he whispered, caressing her cheek with his thumb. “I miss you, Syanna. But I’ll get you back, okay?” He kissed her forehead, and if he didn’t know better, he would’ve thought he saw Isaac’s lips twitch. Cole had to give it to the guy, he was a real friend. He didn’t think he wou
Part 2: The Vampire QueenRain. Gloomy weather had never mattered to Cole before. But now—somehow, he understood why it was always so dark, so cold and so sad. He started at the patch of dirt, hating how the soft patter of rain didn’t wash away the pain in his chest. Cole had no idea how it came to this… how he went from having the love of his life in his arms, to standing in the rain for an hour, staring at the ground. The open world didn’t feel as free as he had anticipated. Although he managed to leave Unici-him and Genevieve—the feeling of the wind in his hair and the bite of freedom on his ski didn’t feel like he had expected it to. Instead, it felt like bondage. It felt like pain, agony and everything in between, not having Syanna by his side. He and Genevieve left Unici two days ago before the headmistress caught onto them, taking Syanna and Isaac with them. Turns out, Genevieve knew of an old, abandoned house about five miles away from Unici. It seemed as if it had been
To say I was shocked was un understatement. I couldn't believe that all this time, so many people had been sent to kill my family. Including Anthony. I gulped and met his eyes, wondering if he somehow still wanted to complete that mission. But he simply continued the story, seeming completely out of it. “Yes,” Anthony confirmed. “But we had killed the wrong people. Your ancestors were smart—smart enough to stay in hiding well.” “But you had already murdered hundreds of people.” “It was about seventy people,” Anthony snapped, though the guilt in his face was evident. “Kids, elders… pregnant women.” “Oh my gosh.” Syanna couldn’t bear it. Dimitri ordered this sort of evil so he could save his own ass? “My mama was the first to fold. She wouldn’t do it a second time. My papa, feeling as though he always needed to protect us as the man of the family, begged her to try again. My sister ran away, and I followed her.” “So, what happened?” Anthony sighed. “I didn’t find my sister
This couldn’t be happening. It just couldn’t. There was no way Syanna was unconscious in Genevieve’s bed, with no sign of life. She wasn’t even breathing normally, and it took everything in Cole not to burn this damn academy to the ground once and for all. “Why isn’t she breathing?” Cole demanded as Genevieve stood in front of the bed where Syanna had been lying unconscious for the last two minutes since they arrived. “She was bitten, Cole.” “What does that mean?” Genevieve seemed on edge, as if, for the first time ever, she didn’t know what to do. And Cole didn’t like that. He sort of depended on Genevieve to always know everything and fix things. But now, she was looking at Syanna as if she had no idea what to do, and it terrified Cole. He paced Genevieve’s room, pulling at the root of his hair as if they were an abomination to him. “It means,” she said, sounding on edge. “That the vampire venom is killing her slowly.” “That doesn’t make any sense!” He threw his hands in the

She felt like she’d been there for hours, when I had only been about twenty minutes. Syanna couldn’t believe someone had kidnapped her in the middle of the school. Wasn’t Unici supposed to be safe? Wasn’t it supposed to be all rainbows and sunshine for all species here? But she guessed not. Because now, she was in someone’s old, abandoned cabin, with a vampire and a large, large class. Syanna knew before he even said anything what his plan had been, but she didn’t want to believe it. Mark assured her that none of the vampires would hurt her or try and drink her blood for power. But he was wrong, and she was wrong for believing him. Mark couldn’t speak for everyone, and it was her mistake for thinking so. So this was the big thing that Cole felt was going to happen, huh? A vampire was hoping to drain her dry and use her blood for power. “You don’t have to do this,” she said for the umpteenth time as the vampire, who’s name she had known as Anthony, stared at her from across the ro
