MARK

The fluorescent lights in the hospital corridor flickered sporadically, casting a sterile, almost cold glow on the polished floors. The antiseptic scent of disinfectant filled the air, mingling with the faint aroma of freshly brewed coffee from a nearby vending machine. I walked with hurried steps, eager to reach Giulia's room. The rhythmic beeping of monitors and hushed conversations of nurses provided a constant backdrop to my thoughts.

When I finally reached her room, I gently knocked and pushed the door open. Giulia lay in bed, her pale face turned towards the window. Her red hair cascaded over the pillow, and despite her illness, she looked serene, almost ethereal. I smiled, trying to mask my worry, but as her eyes met mine, they narrowed in concern.

"Mark?” I held my breath as she gave me a once-over. It was an inspection I didn't need because I knew how unkempt I looked.

She whispered something about my appearance under her breath; something I heard.
