Cloaking herself in shadows had become habitual. She entered Nicholas in his room. Bishop perked up as he sensed her first. Familiars were wary of her though none were aggressive. It took Aubrey’s cat a while to warm up to her.

She uncloaked herself and stepped into the light.

Nicholas turned and nearly jumped at the sight of her. “Callie! What are you doing here?”

“I’m on a sugar run." She opened her bag and pulled out the box of chocolate pies. "This war between your girlfriend and my roommate is ridiculous."

He went to her and accepted the box. He smiled at it before opening the box and taking out a pie. He tore open the foil wrapping hurriedly and bit into the pie. He closed his eyes in bliss as he chewed.

"Should I leave you two alone?" she quipped.

As if remembering she was still there, he opened his eyes and smiled sheepishly and offered, "Want one?"

"Sure."

She took a pie from the box and unwrapped the fo

Nicholas seemed to have a secret desire to catch a cold because he was up on the roof again. She nearly slipped on the way up but Nicholas leaned down and pulled her up the rest of the way. She huffed as she took a seat beside him and she handed him the box of those chocolate-filled cookies shaped like bear heads. He offered her the box and she took one of the cookies. She preferred the ones filled with white chocolate but these were still good."How is Bree?" he asked."You're the only one that calls her that.""I've known her since she was a baby. She will always be 'Bree' to me.""She told me your families are close.""Understatement. Our moms are best friends and our dads studied Magical Law together in university," he explained. "We have vacations, Christmas, and birthday parties together. The Parks are family.""And Aubrey is like your sister.""Little sister who sneaks me snacks." He frowned as he bit into another cookie. "And tells me that

Callie did not have the luxury of time like she did with Trish. She didn’t bother looking into his memories and started weaving a nightmare. She was at the lacrosse field. Matthias was about to throw the winning shot but he was tackled by three players to the ground. The ball fell to the ground before it was scooped up by Nicholas who threw the ball at the net, the other team’s goalie unable to catch it. The buzzer rang out as the game ended. The crowd went wild, cheering Nicholas’s name. His teammates ran to him, raising him up as they carried him like a king away from the field.Matthias got to his feet. The crowd followed after the team until he was alone on the field. He looked devastated. Callie twisted her fingers, not bothering with finesse. A hand touched him on the shoulder and he turned around to find Trish. She smiled at him. He returned it with relief. There was somebody there for him. He dipped down to kiss her but she put her ha

Inducing nightmares didn’t work out like Callie wanted so it was time for Plan B. She learned how to brew potions from Morgan le Fay and she had a recipe for a strong love potion. She could’ve given a Nicholas the potion but she thought it was too cruel. She didn’t want Nicholas Castillo pining after her like some tragic lovesick hero. The love potion would be too strong to give him at full dose. She would need to dilute the potion. She was going for mild attraction. And this would be all over by Yule. There was a snag. She was a decent brewer but substituting ingredients or adjusting measurements was not her forte. She didn’t want to ask help from her Potions professor as they would surely recognize the ingredients and what she was going to brew. The brewing, use, and distribution of love potions were banned ten years ago and she didn’t have time to break herself out of prison. Not all hope was lost. Aubrey had a natural talent for potio

All people could talk about was what happened at the lacrosse game. Matthias had spent the night in the Medical Bay being treated for the potion in his system. Nobody knew how he ended up with a love potion that hadn’t been seen in use since the Middle Ages and their school physician had to call the hospital for a specialist. The cure was a diluted hate potion that seemed to work because Matthias was having breakfast at the dining hall.He kept his head down and didn’t interact with his friends. It looked awkward at their table. Trish sat the furthest away from him. Nicholas sat beside his girlfriend and was very interested in his scrambled eggs.Rumors were spreading and they were getting more and more outrageous."They said that Trish was the one to slip Matthias the love potion. That she bought it off some dark witch at a flea market," Nadia told them. "They said that Trish had been having an affair with Matthias for years.""That’s ridiculou

Callie didn’t care for Divination class. She didn’t have an interest in tea leaf readings and crystal balls. Clairvoyance was an inherent gift and couldn’t be learned by those that didn’t have it. She thought the class was a waste of time. She was usually paired with Aubrey but due to a rising case of Black Cat flu there were an uneven number of students and Professor Goode paired her up with the seer boy in class. He was blind as all seers were and had his familiar, an Australian Shepherd, as his guide dog. His familiar stared at her warily. He was lanky like most boys in their year with golden skin and close-cropped dark curls. He waited by his table as she came over and took the seat across from him. He smiled at her directly. "Hi. I’m Enoch.""Callie.""The new girl from England." He began shuffling his tarot deck with ease from practice. "You have that pretty hair."She touched her dyed brown hair subconsciously. "And how w

Callie dressed warmly in her black coat. It was getting colder as autumn began to fell away and winter crept closer. The Samhain celebrations were going to be held in a clearing in the woods. The way from the school building to the clearing was lit by torches even with the full moon. She followed her classmates as they all walked towards the clearing. It was filled with people, parents and children, mingling and surrounding the tables of food. Familiars were allowed to go to the celebrations with the caveat that they behave. Finnegan stuck by her side as he snuck covetous looks at the meat pies. The parents arrived in the late afternoon and Aubrey introduced Callie to her parents. The Parks were friendly and invited her to spend Samhain with them since she was going to be alone. She found Aubrey and Nadia sharing a mug of chicken pot pie. "You have to try the food, Callie," her roommate said. "The table at the left of the bonfire has all the best pies. You have to ge

Away from the warm lights, Callie collapsed against the trunk of a tree and covered her face in her hands. She tried to breathe, inhaling and exhaling the cold air into her lungs. She told herself she was in the dark with only the trees and the moon to see her. She could breathe better not having to play her charades and pretend she was somebody else.Finnegan was pacing back and forth, agitated. "It was my fault.""What was your fault, Finn?""My fault, my fault, my fault," he repeated. "I killed her. It was my fault."She was getting concerned with her familiar’s distress. She stood and walked over to him. "Who did you kill?"He stopped and went still as a blonde woman stepped out of the darkness and into the moonlight. She was impossibly pale and almost see-through, not quite corporeal. With a voice like she was underwater, she called out, "Finnegan.""Lucy," Finnegan cried. "I’m so sorry.""I know."Callie realized there

The school had a service for Trish a few days after. It was a somber affair where professors and friends told stories about how wonderful Trish had been and how tragic it was for her to die so young. They expected Nicholas to speak but he remained stoic and stayed seated. Matthias gave a speech in his place that ignited the earlier rumors about him and Trish. The school had a bench made in the clearing where they had the Samhain celebrations. Students were leaving flowers and notes on and around the bench for Trish. Everyone was affected by the unexpected death. Shipton Academy was supposed to be a safe haven for witches and warlocks and their perfect little bubble was infected with fear and grief.A few people had asked to hear what she witnessed that night and she had to give them the same story she had to the police. She was the girl that discovered the body. She had Trish’s blood on her hands as she came out of the woods. The sight of her had made a whole school go silent

  • Simmer   Epilogue: Resurrection

Lucifer’s Cage was located in the deepest part of Hell where there was only darkness and the cold. The cage was a solid metal box wrapped in chains that no one could see in. The Four Horsemen visited him whenever they could. They informed him about all that occurred in the realms. While he could hear them, they could not hear him through the cage. It was part of his punishment. To never be seen or heard. It had been a very long time since anyone had seen Lucifer’s face.Asmodeus tried to remember Lucifer’s face but wasn’t sure if he was confusing him with another’s. Even a demon’s memory wasn’t infallible. He remembered when he was first met the Morningstar. He had taken a human form to mock God’s newest creation, Adam.He had been the most brilliant thing Asmodeus had ever seen. Like the Pied Piper, he led his fellow angelic brethren to fall from Heaven. They were banished to Hell where they would start building their

Callie didn’t know what would happen to her once they left Hell. She expected to be thrown back into prison or she would have to disappear into the world and never return. She hadn’t counted on Frederick Wood to be her protector. The uncle she’d never known defended her against the Council and the police. She had been a minor arrested and acquitted without trial. They never contacted her legal guardian which should’ve been him. All her actions were made under duress after years of abuse and trauma. It was a case the Magical World had never seen before and it would’ve become bigger than what it was if Head Warlock Castillo didn’t want to keep things quiet. He had a lifetime of secrets he did not want to get out to the public. Frederick did not hesitate to use this leverage to his advantage. Callie could admit she was lucky she got off on probation and half a year in house arrest. Maybe all those years of terrible luck were finally turnin

The dust clouds dissipated. Callie couldn’t look away from the pile of ashes that used to be Finnegan. It was difficult to process that he was truly gone and she could never have him back. It was a new kind of pain she hadn’t felt before. It threatened to overwhelm her.Nicholas touched her shoulder gently and asked, "Are you going to be okay?"She wanted to scream from the cocktail of emotions running through her. The loudest was anger. It beat like war drums in her mind, wanting to be unleashed. She felt restless."His death wasn’t your fault.""Don’t lie to me," she snapped. "He wouldn’t have been here if it wasn’t for me.""He made a choice and he knew the risks. We all did."She shook her head. "I’m not worth the risks. None of you should’ve come here.""You don’t get to decide that," he countered. "Only we can and we all decided that saving you is worth any danger.""You really believ

Mammon towered over Callie at nearly seven feet tall. He was muscled and strong and he swung his sword like a hammer. Callie was lighter and faster and had to dodge his blows as they came right after another. He gave chase like an angry dog trying to take a big bite out of her.She wasn’t fast enough to dodge one blow and his golden sword sliced her in the side. She ignored the sting and the blood wetting her dress and dodged another blow. His next blow nearly got her in the head. He growled in frustration."Fight me properly!" he roared. "Stop dancing around!""Make me!"He growled and lunged at her and she sidestepped a blow that would’ve sliced her throat. He elbowed her in the side where she was wounded and the pain made her stop. It was a mistake as he swung at her and she had to twist away to avoid getting hit. She tripped and landed on the sand, the air knocked out of her.She tried to get to her feet quickly but Mammon kicked her and forc

They found a sack to put Belphegor’s head in from one of the rooms and they left it in alley on the opposite end of Fallen’s Nest. The more time the Demon Lord had to put himself back together the better it was for them. They had to rush back to get their friends. The ravens all circled over the Duke’s Mansion, slamming into the windows to get in and help their master. Ravens flew down and tried to peck and scratch at them. Nadia knocked a few back with her defensive magic, blasting the birds several feet into the air. They burned the more determined ones. The ravens did not relent the whole way back to Witch Village. They found Aubrey outside the house with three camels and helping Matthias unto one. He still looked pale and sickly but was at least conscious. Enoch was sitting on the steps of the house and talking to Helena. Aubrey ran to them and hugged them each, relieved they were okay. Morgan walked over and demanded, "Is he dead?""Yes,"

  • Simmer   Atonement

Callie was surprised that Morgan didn’t throw them out into the street empty(-)handed. The Great demon weighed the odds of them actually defeating Allocen and decided to assist with the bare minimum. The only weapon she had in the house was an old battle axe Baba Yaga stole from the time of the Vikings. Nicholas didn’t complain and picked up the axe which looked heavier than it actually was."Don’t fail," Morgan reminded, glancing to where Aubrey was fussing over Matthias. "The consequences could be dire."Callie didn’t miss the less than subtle threat and glared at her. "It could be dire for all of us."Morgan gave Nadia one of the knives from her collection. The blade was dipped in a potent poison of Morgan’s own recipe. She handed them a few more potions that might be useful for the fight before declaring them ready. Aubrey gave them hugs and wished them luck.Enoch didn’t get up from where he was seated on the couch. Helena

  • Simmer   Penance

Demons used Hellhound venom for torture. While it couldn’t kill a demon, it took a while to heal and it was painful. Callie had firsthand experience and Matthias hadn't said a word despite being in excruciating pain. She didn’t know if it was a guy thing or a human thing to be that proud or stupid.Nicholas, Aubrey, and Nadia carried the unconscious Matthias into Morgan’s house. It looked like a Victorian style home with ivy growing on the walls outside. Callie had always thought Morgan purposely tried to make her house more appealing as if to hide the terrors from within. The house looked the same since the last time she’d been there except for the overwhelming powerful cloaking spell around it.As formidable as Morgan was, wards and invisibility spells weren’t her expertise. The answer came when Callie saw Batibat was sitting by the fireplace wearing a plain black dress and her dark hair in a severe bun. The Great demon followed them as they

Much to Callie’s relief, her friends followed her advice and stayed on the Blood Road. They didn’t run into more lost souls or demons as they continued on their journey. Their only concern were the ravens that followed them, circling above like an omen. Callie kept Lucifer’s Grace in hand lest one of the birds swooped down and tried to peck at them. The ravens flew away when they reached the edge of the city. Paradise was a small city with a population of more than fifty-thousand demons. It was the oldest city in Hell and was created by the Fallen when they were banished from Heaven. It started off as a small village and expanded over the years as more demons populated the realm.Callie could have gone unnoticed if she had been alone. She had enough demon blood for the city residents not to bother with her. Her human companions would be like fresh blood to a shiver of sharks. They would sniff them out within minutes.Callie borrowed the small knife A

  • Simmer   Perdition

The Blood Road wasn’t really a road. There was no pavement or stone. It was a trail of dried black blood that stained the ground. It was made from the blood of Lucifer after God had ripped his wings from him and he had been forced to walk through Hell to his cage. It had not faded over time. The black blood was still stark as the day Lucifer staggered then crawled through the realm. Demons had been known to kneel and pray to the Devil on the blood road. Lilith and the witches would light black candles on Samhain and walk on the blood road, following the path Lucifer had walked. They walked closely together in case of an attack. Nicholas tried to hide how vulnerable he felt without the Holy Lance but Callie could see through him. He still had the use of holy fire but the spear had been an ace that was difficult to lose. They only had one weapon to fight with and Lucifer’s Grace would attract more attention than they wanted.Callie clutched the blade closer
