Lauren disengaged from the hug filled with smiles.
Bryan tapped her shoulders, “I’m so sorry, your dress’s all wet because of me.”
Lauren looked at the big wet circle on the shoulder of her dress and smiled, “It is no big deal. You can cry more if you want to.”
He shook his head, his eyes were all puffed and swollen. “I’m sorry.”
“Stop saying that, will you?” she scolded. “I have to go now. Will you be fine on your own?”
He nodded.
She smiled, “You’ll come down for dinner, right?”
“Will you cook dinner?”
Her eyes widened, “You want me to?”
He nodded. Lauren laughed, feeling smug. “Fine. just make sure you come downstairs for dinner, okay?”
He nodded and reluctantly, she left for the master bedroom. The briefcase by the bed told her Malcolm was back. The thought of him re
Malcolm didn’t eat breakfast before leaving for work the next day. Lauren chuckled; had she made him that mad? Well, she was glad she, a nobody, could actually affect the almighty Mr. Knight. She came downstairs for breakfast only to see Bryan seated already. “Good morning.” He greeted. She was half-surprised, “Morning Bryan. Hope you slept well.”He nodded and watched as Kate emptied the can of cereals on his plate before adding some milk she had taken from the refrigerator. Lauren opted for the same dish. She never had cereals before. When she has entered the Byrne mansion newly, Grace had forbidden Michelle’s nanny from letting her use it. Her entire breakfast back then was leftover bread from other’s breakfast. “You know, you don’t have to pretend just to get my attention,” Bryan stated scornfully, stirring his bowl without looking up at her.Lauren smiled awkwardly. If s
“Look who we have here!” Joyce exclaimed as the door opened and the butler ushered in her grandson and her son’s new wife. “Grandma!” Bryan exclaimed running straight to his grandmother’s arms. She was his favorite, Lauren could tell right away. “Hello, mother.” Good thing she remembered. She couldn’t afford to suffer a spank.A hand drew her into the hug, “Come here, you.”Just then, Theo, Malcolm’s father came downstairs. “Look who came, Theo. We suddenly had august visitors.” Joyce announced. She turned to Lauren, “I thought you weren’t going to come.” “I’m sorry for not coming earlier, Mother, Father.” She apologized. “At least you came, so I forgive you.” Joyce replied.Theo turned to Lauren and whispered, “Forgive her. She tends to be kind of ta
Soon, the cake was ready and just as the two women walked into the dining with it, Bryan came jumping in with joy. Lauren had never seen him so happy about something before. “Let me guess, you won.” Joyce said giving him a high-five. “That little guy’s one hell of a chess player.” Theo commented, walking in.Lauren grabbed a table knife, “And so, we will grace our victor with the honor of being the first to eat the cake.”Bryan clapped and quickly grabbed the saucer containing a pyramid of chocolate cake. He sliced a handful and put it into his mouth, before closing his eyes to savor the taste. “How’s it?” Joyce asked. He opened his puppy eyes, “Grandma’s chocolate cakes are the best! Can I take some home, please?” “Of course, you can.” Replied Joyce who was grinning like a school boy at her grandson’s praise. La
Lauren strolled down the street with a smile plastered on her face. She could imagine the smile on Mr. Grumpy’s face when he sees her present. She felt so smug like he was standing right in front of her. It was her second time gifting something to the opposite gender. The first had been… Her smile fell as she thought of him. Raymond Spencer. Her first love, and just maybe, her only love. But it had been years now. She wondered if he still thought of her wherever he was. Raymond was a new student at her and Michelle’s high school years ago. he was beautiful that even girls forgot to breathe beside him. The first day he was introduced in their class, girls unashamedly began to hit on him almost immediately including Michelle who had a ‘thing’ for handsome guys. He was as icy as Malcolm; she could still remember. That was what brought trouble to her doorstep. After the introduction, he came to sit right next to her ignoring the seat Michelle ‘cleared’ for him to
Malcolm stood in front of the ceiling to floor glass window that overlooked the city, legs astride and large hands crossed behind him. His aura was so icy nobody dared come close. It had been quite a while since Malcolm was this angry and this time, it was because of Michelle Byrne.Another figure entered the room, stopping meters away from the lonesome figure by the window. “Sir.” The figure spoke in a low voice that could be mistaken for a growl. “Has she been found?” Malcolm asked, unmoving. “I’m sorry sir. Please give us some more time.”Malcolm nodded repeatedly, holding on to his temper on a thinning thread. “Just make sure you find her.” As he spoke, his eyes caught the gold clock hanging low on the wall. It was past 8pm. Four hours since she stopped the car on their way home. When he had been told she and Bryan went to his parent’s, he had quickly left his offi
Malcom opened his groggy eyes as the alarm went off, his eyes quickly glancing at the smooth other side of the bed that showed no one had lain on it. he had barely slept the previous night. he had spent more than half of the night typing away furiously on his laptop—or rather pretending to be. A part of him kept glancing at Michelle’s shut closet door. She hadn’t come out since she entered.A small part of him felt very disappointed.Had he been too harsh last night? His alarm went off again, irritating him. Quickly, his hands reached up to turn the damn thing off but instead, his hand touched a rather hard surface. Quickly, he sat up to see what it was and his eyes widened as he came face-to-face with a parcel. His brows perked up. There was no other person who would get him this except Michelle. Somewhere deep down, his insides warmed. Nobody had ever gotten him a gift before.Okay, maybe someone had before but ever since he took over
Lauren watched her phone ring, unsure if she should feel privileged that the almighty Malcolm Knight was calling her for the first time or if she should feel downcast that it actually took him close to three months after their marriage before bothering to ring her up. Shifting her conflicted feeling aside, she answered the phone. “We have a dinner gathering to attend tonight.” He said without preamble, his voice just as icy as usual. “I don’t want to go to any—“ “It wasn’t a suggestion. It’s an order. You are my wife and will do as I say!” He growled. She rolled her eyes, a part of her knowing he felt it wherever he was, “I thought this marriage was supposed to be a secret.” It wasn’t everyday she got to peeve the unfeeling man so it was best to make use of the opportunity whenever it came. “It’s just a few confidential business partners and their dates. Moreover, a lady doesn’t have to be my wife to be my date.”
Lauren looked at her reflection in the mirror over and over again. This wasn’t her. The gorgeous woman with shiny eyes and magnificent black hair staring straight back at her couldn’t be her. She didn’t look this beautiful and breathtaking. The make-up team was gone and it was just her sitting in front of a mirror, watching the clock walk slowly. It was past five. She still had time. The red dress she wore stopped just a few inches above her knee cap. It fitted her so well. Lauren didn’t even know she was this curvy. She couldn’t believe she was dressed like this just for some dinner party. What was so special about the party anyway. Left to her, she would have worn just a simple dress that was less in-your-face. Breathing out heavily, she straightened creases that were never on her dress. Well, she hoped her icy husband would like her new look. Just as she spoke, she heard his car drive-in.Speak of the devil. To save him the stres
Lauren found herself in a big mansion. It was so big and beautiful that she couldn't help but admire it. Just as she was about to move about to admire it, something clung to her legs and when she turned, she saw Bryan. "Bryan?" She turned and carried him into her arms so naturally like he was a part of his life. She played around with him and just when she was getting tired, she heard a voice call out her name. Turning around, she saw no one. Was she just imagining it? It came again, this time, the voice was filled with longing and loneliness. "Who are you?" She asked. The voice came the third time and this time, a figure appeared by the door, slowly walking towards her. As the face came into light, a wave of recognition hit her and her tears began to flow freely as she ran into his arms. "Malcolm." She closed her eyes familiarizing herself with the feeling he brought and when she opened them, she was no longer in the beautiful mansion.
...Be downstairs in five minutes or forget about living...Warren flung his phone in fear and without waiting for his wife to question him, he scurried downstairs. If the voice he heard on the phone was real, then he was dead. He flew down the stairs to meet the 'visitor' who was seated comfortably on the sofa, sipping from a glass of blood-red wine. "Mr. Knight," Warren called out in respect. The man before him maybe his son-in-law but three was no way he was going to disrespect him. Malcolm finally looked at him, his eyes as icy as ever. "Start talking," Malcolm said.Warren was confused. What was the meaning of this? Was this man trying to play a prank? He smiled, "Is Mr. Knight trying to crack a joke?"Malcolm didn't reply. He kept looking at the giant clock at the other end of the room and after exactly five minutes, he threw a stack of documents at Warren. Realizing how serious the man before him was, Warren pick
Malcolm leaned by the car, smoking a cigarette and staring into the space his son disappeared into. His subordinates looked confused but they dared not question him. They had been there for hours but instead of going after the little guy and bringing him back home, they stood they for close to an hour. Malcolm however, was ignorant of what his subordinates were thinking. He only stood there quietly, with a stick of burning cigarette between his fingers, feeling as nervous as ever. Just then, he heard Bryan scream for help and that was enough to jolt him out of whatever reverie he was in. Quickly, he rushed in and the sight that greeted him, made his blood boil. Lauren laid on the floor helplessly unconscious. Quickly, he dished out an order to call Dr. Alfred before carrying the frail girl into his arms to the car and driving her off to Dr. Alfred's hospital. Bryan ignored his father. His only attention was on his mother. The thought of her death made his heart wrench. He didn't wan
Malcolm stood by Bryan's door, listening to him sulk all night with a sigh. How could he have not known? How could he have allowed himself to be deceived twice by the same person? Now, he had hurt everybody around him, including his son and most especially, Lauren. He wondered how meeting her again would feel like. He didn't even know where she was for crying out loud! Gradually pushing his weak body to his room, his face scrunched at the sight of it. The scent of that woman still lingered. In fact, it had overshadowed the scent of his Lauren and it disgusted him. He walked to the balcony, lighting a cigarette and drawing in the smoke like he was trying to find comfort in it. He chuckle as he choked. He didn't believe that a day would come when he of all people would feel pain. Maybe, karma was finally knocking at his doorstep. He chuckled wryly.Karma.Did he even believe in that word?Anna hummed a song as she took a morning shower. Perhaps, it w
Michelle let go of Bryan's chin quickly and staggered backward, her eyes not leaving the figure at the door.Malcolm.How come? She didn't even hear his car drive in. She opened her mouth to speak but no words came. Bryan glared at her and then his father before slowly walking away to his room upstairs. His face, clearly showing how to hurt he was. "Welcome baby." Michelle greeted in the most natural voice ever, hoping Malcolm hadn't seen what had transpired earlier since Bryan had his back to him. Smiling she walked up to him and made to collect his briefcase but his firm hold on it told her he had clearly seen the scene earlier. Like an executioner approaching his victim, he took cold steps towards her, her mind skipping at each step he made.He flung the briefcase to one side of the sofa, "Start talking." He said in a calm voice.Huh?! " Baby I don't know what you are talking about." Michelle tried hard to maintain her innocent look despi
Bryan stayed with Anna and her family, unwilling to return home. Anna tried every technique she could remember but the little guy was resolute. He wanted to stay with her. Anna panicked. It was getting pretty late. The sky was turning dark. She had successfully spent her whole day with the little guy but yet even now, he was ever reluctant to return to his parents. "How about this? We will meet at the lake tomorrow. Is that okay with you?" Anna negotiated, finding it funny that she was actually bargaining with a little chap.Bryan blinked, "Pinky promise?"Anna sighed. She hadn't meant her word but she really wasn't expecting him to hold her by her words. "If I Pinky swear, will you return home?"He pretended to be in deep thoughts and after a while, he looked up to her and nodded. "Fine then." She gave in, bringing her pinky finger close to the guy, and just as their Pinkys met, images began to fly through her head at a ridiculously
Bryan sat almost lifelessly, starring straight into the lake. He looked downcast. Things have never been the same ever since his mother left. His father had become so into that woman that he no longer listened or care about him.Mommy... His heart cried out, Bryan has been a good boy. Please come back to little Bryan. He didn't feel like going home despite the fact that he knew guards would be on the search for him. Luckily, that woman didn't know a thing about this place. He frowned at the thought of her discovering his mother's most treasured place. It would be like a weed entering into a place where it isn't wanted. "Little One?"Bryan froze. Had he been imagining too much that he now heard her voice in his head? Tears welled in his eyes. But just when he concluded it was an illusion, a hand touched his shoulder and the voice came again. This time, he couldn't resist it. He turned around and at the sight of her, the tears that
Anna sighed in relief after they were settled in. Luckily, Grandpa Worth had a friend in the city who was willing to accommodate them. As she looked at the family of three, her heart swelled with gratitude. They knew nothing about her yet, they risked leaving their home to accompany her to a hospital. She could only hope in her heart that someday, she would be able to repay their kindness to her. She gazed lovingly at little Gwen who was busy watching the city through the window. From her exclamations, Anna could guess it was her first time being in a big city like this. "Anna, why don't you take a walk with your sister? I think I'm going to have a headache listening to all her nonsense." Keira suggested with a smile. Behind Anna, she shared a brief meaningful gaze with her husband. If a part of her memory could flash the minute they entered the city, it only meant she was somehow connected to this city. And who knows? Perhaps, she might end up recalling more if she ge
Michelle looked in the direction of the open door, her mouth wide open in shock. She even forgot she was naked! By the door, stood Malcolm with an extremely chilly aura. God! She was doomed! She turned to look at the cause of her problems but instead of being as shocked as her, he actually had a sly smile on his face. "Malcolm..." Michelle lacked what to say. She had been caught red-handed so she couldn't whip up a single lie. "You really don't know what is called bad timing, bro, do you?" Christian said with a satisfied look on his face. It was like he had done it on purpose to piss his brother off.Quickly, Michelle grabbed her shirt and flew out of the bed. She put it on and quickly approached the man with the vicious aura standing by the door but before she could reach out to touch him, he evaded her touch. "Darling, it wasn't my fault. Christian tried to force himself on me." She said, sounding grieved. The man didn't say
