Malcom opened his groggy eyes as the alarm went off, his eyes quickly glancing at the smooth other side of the bed that showed no one had lain on it. he had barely slept the previous night. he had spent more than half of the night typing away furiously on his laptop—or rather pretending to be. A part of him kept glancing at Michelle’s shut closet door. She hadn’t come out since she entered.
A small part of him felt very disappointed.
Had he been too harsh last night?
His alarm went off again, irritating him. Quickly, his hands reached up to turn the damn thing off but instead, his hand touched a rather hard surface. Quickly, he sat up to see what it was and his eyes widened as he came face-to-face with a parcel. His brows perked up. There was no other person who would get him this except Michelle. Somewhere deep down, his insides warmed. Nobody had ever gotten him a gift before.
Okay, maybe someone had before but ever since he took over
Lauren watched her phone ring, unsure if she should feel privileged that the almighty Malcolm Knight was calling her for the first time or if she should feel downcast that it actually took him close to three months after their marriage before bothering to ring her up. Shifting her conflicted feeling aside, she answered the phone. “We have a dinner gathering to attend tonight.” He said without preamble, his voice just as icy as usual. “I don’t want to go to any—“ “It wasn’t a suggestion. It’s an order. You are my wife and will do as I say!” He growled. She rolled her eyes, a part of her knowing he felt it wherever he was, “I thought this marriage was supposed to be a secret.” It wasn’t everyday she got to peeve the unfeeling man so it was best to make use of the opportunity whenever it came. “It’s just a few confidential business partners and their dates. Moreover, a lady doesn’t have to be my wife to be my date.”
Lauren looked at her reflection in the mirror over and over again. This wasn’t her. The gorgeous woman with shiny eyes and magnificent black hair staring straight back at her couldn’t be her. She didn’t look this beautiful and breathtaking. The make-up team was gone and it was just her sitting in front of a mirror, watching the clock walk slowly. It was past five. She still had time. The red dress she wore stopped just a few inches above her knee cap. It fitted her so well. Lauren didn’t even know she was this curvy. She couldn’t believe she was dressed like this just for some dinner party. What was so special about the party anyway. Left to her, she would have worn just a simple dress that was less in-your-face. Breathing out heavily, she straightened creases that were never on her dress. Well, she hoped her icy husband would like her new look. Just as she spoke, she heard his car drive-in.Speak of the devil. To save him the stres
Lauren swallowed a lump of saliva to keep her dry throat wet. Why the hell did Malcolm not warn her about this? She hated trouble and these women definitely smelt like trouble.Grabbing a drink from a passing waitress, she whispered a thank-you with a smile. Taking a sip of the red liquid, she closed her eyes as she savoured its sweet taste followed by a burning sensation, ignoring the looks she got from the half dozen women in the room. “it looks like Malcolm got himself a new whore.” One spoke up. “Yolanda!” another scolded, “Don’t be rude. The poor girl might break down in tears.”Giggles filled the room but Lauren paid no attention. She was never a big fan of gossips and won’t start now. She smiled and sipped more from her glass. Now she knew why Malcolm didn’t inform her forehand. He was testing her and she wasn’t going to let him down. “Tell me girl,
As the scream from the adjacent room interrupted the meeting, Malcolm couldn’t help but wonder if Michelle was okay. He had purposely not informed her about the arrangement to test her. According to his grandfather, a chicken-hearted person wasn’t fit to be the Mistress of the Knight empire. He kept his icy demure and remained glued to his seat as the men entered the room to check on the ladies. The minute he heard Yolanda’s voice, he immediately knew Michelle was in some kind of trouble. Born with a silver spoon, Yolanda was used to having her way in practically everything and when she didn’t, she always found a way to hurt her victim. Making sure to be unnoticed, he walked to the door and when he sighted a nonchalant Michelle sitting on her chair and twirling her glass, his heart swelled with pride. She looked like a little devil watching her prey dance to her music. The cut on her cheeks made her look wicked and he felt like hitting her for allowing her bl
Lauren looked out through the window, as bored as hell. She had stayed indoors the entire week so her little scar could heal and now, she didn’t even feel it anymore all thanks to Doctor Alfred’s expertise and of course, her overbearing husband. She looked out at the cluster of buildings. Somehow, she missed her old life. She missed being her! She missed working so many jobs at a time.Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. a quite dangerous one.A part of her wanted to remain indoors and stick to her usual routine of preparing meals with Kate and napping but a bigger part of her danced excitedly at the thought of an adventure. After hours of conflict, the bigger part of her won, and quickly, she jumped into her closet, returning minutes later dressed in a simple dress that stopped just on her knee cap. Grabbing her designer handbag, she exited the room, walking downstairs in steps as graceful as Malcolm’s. being married to him for more than three mo
Bryan starred straight at nothing. He had ditched lessons again, just like he had done for the past three days. Nobody noticed, just as he had expected. His father was too busy with work and his so-called stepmother who he was beginning to have a soft spot for was in her room.He missed his friend. He’d had nightmares for the past three nights. Nightmares of her been taken away from him despite his cries and screams. Nobody cared. Thanks to the fact that he’s asked for his room to be soundproofed, nobody heard him scream from sleep at an ungodly hour. He knew it was only a matter of time before his tutor leaks it to his dad that he had been ditching class but he refused to let go of the last vestige of hope in his heart that he might see her if he continued coming to the pond for a week. He had prayed to the moon the night before, something he never, ever did for anyone, not even himself. He only wanted to see her face. To make sure she was okay. That her s
Lauren walked into the house like nothing happened. According to Michael, Bryan had been home since morning, and to prove it, he made to check up on the young lad but Lauren stopped him, afraid that she might end up exposing the little guy who might not be home yet. How he managed to escape so unnoticed was what she couldn’t explain. She couldn’t ask him either, knowing he only thought of her as Michelle. Waving Michael off politely, Lauren walked upstairs to the room she shared with Malcolm and peeled off her clothing, replacing it with a simple white home gown that stopped just on her thighs. She gathered her hair in a rough bun before returning downstairs to prepare dinner with Kate. “Good evening, Ms. Byrne.” Kate greeted.Lauren rolled her eyes, “You know, you really don’t have to keep doing this. I thought we were friends already.”Kate smiled, “Rules are always rules. It wasn’t for the boss&rsqu
Lauren walked down the void of darkness not knowing where she was. She tried to call for help but strangely, her throat was parched and no sound came out of her mouth. She was scared. her heart slammed against her chest as if threatening to burst out in no time. She shut her eyes tight and closed her ears with her palms. She was lost. “Lauren.” A voice called out in the wind. A voice she knew perfectly well. A voice she could recognise anywhere in the world. It was her mother.Opening her eyes, she found herself in a vast dessert with wind that threatened to knock her off her feet. Just where the hell was she? “Mom?” she called out, hoping she would see her mother, and she did! A hand landed on her shoulders and when she turned, there stood her mother, wearing her ever charming smile. “Mom.” Lauren called again in a shaky voice. This time, tears slid down her cheeks. She saw her mother
