After four days, I finally got a moment to step away. Kev was right that the damage could have been much worse but for one she-wolf, Sky did a number. Mostly it was cracked roads or wolves being thrown into building or poles. There was cleanup covered the roads, buildings and in the places that my pack had tried to make a stand against the rogues. The pack house was an absolute disaster. The bottom floor was basically completely ruined along with the outside porch being unsafe to walk on.
Then it was getting everyone healed and rested. Both fortunately and unfortunately, the majority of losses that we had were warriors. It was their job to put their pack safety first but it left a huge hole in our own security after. I needed to make sure we had coverage where we now had gaping holes. Sam, Kev and I all took up multiple patrols to cover as many places for the healing warriors before putting the newer recruits sandwiched between veterans. I didn’t anticipate another atta
And ready, I was not.My very busy schedule suddenly got a lot busier. Every other day I had to drive up to the coven. Most of it was sat in meditation for hours, only to get slapped with a staff when my mind wandered. One thing I could do was focus on my drawings for long periods of time but focusing on nothing was not in my wheelhouse. It turned out I was exceptionally bad at it. Leaving me some days recovering just from the amount of hits I got from the two of them.“You’re wandering again!” Sophie hit me between the shoulders with the stick.I knew better than to answer or even growl. That was breaking out of the concentration completely and usually ended up with some kind of magic being slung at me. Taking a deep breath, I focused inside. It wasn’t a natural thing to do. Pushing away the pack bond, even pushing Niru out of my head, was far more difficult than it seemed. I hadn’t been alone in my own head since I was a child. Th
“You’re late.”Sky didn’t even turn around. Her arms were crossed as she watched my guys spar on the mats they dragged out. I put my hands up in resignation.“I apologize. I didn’t mean to be. It won’t happen again.”She looked at me over her shoulder and her eyes narrowed. Turning, she held out her hand. I looked at it, confused of what she was asking for. Finally, I just put my hand on top other open palm. Immediately, it started to sting as she slapped it.“Not that hand. The other one.”I cocked my head to the side and placed the still-tingling numb hand in hers. Her chest rose and fell before she sandwiched the top of my hand with her other one. Slowly, she pulled her hands until my hand was left hanging mid-air. My eyes widened as I had full feeling back in my hand. Looking up at her, Sky had already turned back to the guys.“Don’t do that again.” Her tone was cross.“I…how…you can just…?”Chuckling, Sky shook her head. “It’s my power, Ethan. You think I can’t just take it back?”
“What? How?”Sky turned back to the door and I noticed her hand tighten around the make-shift weapon. “I don’t know. It’s like…a feeling. Like he’s come within a certain range and I can feel him. It’s rough though. I don’t know exactly where. Just…close.”“What do you want to do?”She snorted. “Murder him?”My lips pursed in a thin line. I stepped closer and rubbed her arm that wasn’t holding the crowbar. She leaned back a bit into my chest and Niru purred. Still, her muscles were coiled up and on alert.“We need to give him a chance.” I reached for her chin and tilted her head up so she could look at me. “He’s your mate too. He’s your chance of a future. You need both of us.”“But…”I smiled. “I know. Trust me, I know. But one step at a time.”“Like?”“Like maybe we should head out into the forest? Carl said he was feral, right? So he’ll be in wolf form. We don’t know how much of him is left.”She hummed but nodded. Setting out, I wish she’d let the crowbar go but she took it with he
Justin looked up at me and whined.“Yes, well, you kind of deserved that. Maybe even a little more for what you did. You’re going to be lucky if Sky forgives you.” I sighed. “We’ll be lucky if she forgives you.”It took a little longer to reach her shop since I was slowing down for Justin but we did make it. He hopped over the barrier but I had to reach down and grab him before he fell. His legs weren’t ready to take the full brunt of a jump yet. Looking both ways, we walked across the road. I reached my truck and opened up the passenger door.“Climb in. I need to grab some stuff inside before we leave.”He stopped mid-climb.“No. You can’t go in. I don’t want her to smell you. The point is to let her cool off. Come at this more level-headed. Honestly, she was planning on killing you.”He whined back at me, giving me a sad puppy face.“No. Not gonna work. Sadly, you’re in a threesome with two Alphas. You got the short end of the stick. Now, sit tight and wait. I’ll bring you back to ho
I tapped my pen on the desk. There were a bunch of different things I needed to tie up with the new buildings. Usually, I enjoyed paperwork. I could sink into it and not think about anything other than the words in front of me. The problem was I hadn’t seen Sky in a week. Niru was is a mood because of it and I really wasn’t much better. The reason for that was laying on the couch in my office, snoozing away. Justin was still in wolf form. We had tried a few different things but nothing was working. He didn’t even seem like had a human side, which worried me. Right now, he was the pack house pet who loved getting scratches and stole food from your plate if you weren’t looking. My lips thinned as I closed my eyes. Sky’s conversations over the phone were short and clipped when I talked to her. Normally, I would have gone to her but Justin was so attached to my side that even when I headed into the city without him, he would either jump in the back of the truck or just follow the Jeep. I h
I hadn’t practiced this enough. My work with Sky helped me know what it felt like to shift within her mind but actually doing it on my own was another story. Let alone feeling like I was running for my life. I closed my eyes and tried to picture slipping back. Getting the hell out of here while behind me the monster roared and screamed. It seemed like I had gotten out of its reach but the pull to it was back and that wasn’t helping.Squeezing my eyes tighter shut, I focused on the task of getting back to my own mind. I blocked out the chaos behind me. I blocked out the pull. I blocked out the fatigue I was feeling. I blocked everything until I felt myself weightless again. The air bent and shifted around me until I slammed into my own body.Falling forward onto my hands, I coughed and sucked in air. A hand was on my back and I looked up to see Kev, a worried look on his face. Shaking my head, I took gasping breaths to reign myself back in. My body felt lethargic and I wanted to collaps
It had finally snowed. Overnight, the skies decided to dump a nice layer of snow over the entirety of the territory. Not having gone to sleep after the connection with Skylar, I ended up shoveling the driveway and the walkway into the house. There was a light dusting since then but it wasn’t bad enough to need to go over it again. I was leaning against the pillar of the deck as I looked out over the road. Sky texted me this morning that she would come by after having some coffee but never gave a specific time.‘I hate when she does that.’Niru chuckled. ‘I know you do. You’re brooding.’‘That’s not why I’m brooding.’He snickered. ‘Oh, I know.’ There was a pause before I could feel his excitement. ‘Were her lips soft? Or were you too stunned to even realize it?’Groaning, I tossed him and his snickering ass back. Niru hadn’t stopped making fun of me the entirety I was awake. Jabbing that I wasn’t in tune with my feelings and that I just let her take over. That I was Alpha but she woul
None of us said anything. Sky was too shaken up. Her eyes flickered back to their normal color as she lost concentration. Taking her hands out from mine, she got up and started to pace the living room. I watched her as Raine and her had a conversation. Eventually, she put both hands on her head, trying to somehow make sense of what she was feeling.“Sky.” I called to her.She didn’t acknowledge that she heard me. Her heel turned as she paced back the way she walked.“Sky!” I called to her a little louder this time.Still nothing from her.“Skylar Cross!” I let my Alpha slip out slightly and she finally turned to me.What I wasn’t expecting was tears. They flowed down her cheeks as soon as she stopped pacing and I got up quickly. Pulling her to me, I wrapped my arms around her. She sobbed into my chest.“I’m holding him hostage. It’s my power that’s destroying him. Ethan, it’s my fault.”I shook my head and pressed my lips to the top of her head. “It’s not. You didn’t do this, did you?
