Chapter 614

Author: Gina Cinq
"What should I do to make you accept my flowers?" Winston took a step forward. His tone was as gentle as the night breeze.

Millie shook her head. "I will never accept flowers from you."

Winston was smart enough to figure out her undertone. Not only did she refuse his flowers, but she rejected the idea of ever getting back with him.

She made it clear she would never get back with him in this lifetime. She was done after that one experience of falling in love deeply and getting hurt badly. It was pointless to give their relationship another shot.

"But I'd like to give it a try." Once again, he shoved the flowers in her way.

Smiling, she took the flowers. "Well, there's no harm trying."

He raised his eyes with a glimmer of hope.

Staring at the roses in her arms, she wished he had bought her flowers whenever she professed her love to him. Alas, this was a belated effort by Winston.

Millie turned and tossed the fresh roses into the trash can without a second thought, as though she h

Even as Millie drove away, Winston stood beside the car, his eyes fixed on her as she sped off. Her face was barely a blur in his vision.Winston's gaze then fell on the discarded bouquet of roses in the trash. For the first time, he realized pursuing someone wasn't easy. How had Millie managed to hold on all those years ago?If he could do it all over again, he would give anything to see life through Millie's eyes, to understand how she had managed to survive all these years. Leaning against the car, Winston stared at the ground and let out a long, weary sigh. After a moment, he got into the car, took out a cigarette, and lit it. At some point, smoking had become his refuge when things felt overwhelming. Perhaps it was because no one was left to care enough to stop him.He still remembered their university days vividly. Whenever they went out for a meal and someone started smoking nearby, Millie would wrinkle her nose and move away.Winston used to tease her for being delicate

Millie's lips curled into a slight smile. Terrence was still as humorous as ever.Suddenly, Julia chuckled and said, "It's not entirely out of the question."Millie was taken aback. Her usually composed mother was actually on board with Terrence's devious scheme. "I'd be impressed if you can bring yourselves to throw Winston and his things out," Millie remarked with a smirk. She was merely giving them a heads-up. How they handled Winston's visit the next night was up to them. "I've got a great idea," Terrence said seriously. Both Millie and Julia stared at him with anticipation."If we can't handle it, we'll let you take over," Terrence told Millie, who immediately looked displeased. That was indeed a "brilliant" idea. Julia, on the other hand, burst out laughing. Millie shook her head and stood up. "I'm going to get some rest," she said. "We'll handle tomorrow's issues as they come. For now, let's just go with the flow. But Dad, Mom, try not to make things worse with Win

As the night grew darker, Terrence's birthday party was in full swing. A vibrant sign at the Caldwell Villa's entrance announced the special occasion. It served as a reminder that it was Terrence's birthday and a sign to guests that they had come to the right place.Millie, dressed in a casual white dress with her hair pinned up, was busy in the kitchen with Julia. The whole family was there, along with a few of Terrence's close friends, including Rachel's parents. Arthur and Layla sat on the couch, greeting and welcoming the guests as they arrived. Millie poured several glasses of water and handed them to Rachel's parents. Rachel mentioned she would be arriving later that evening. Her flight was scheduled to land at 8:00 pm, so she would likely get to the Caldwell Villa around 9:00 pm. Given how close she was to Terrence, always calling him by his first name, she was definitely planning to be there for his birthday.Hearing the doorbell, Millie glanced outside and announced,

Could it be that Millie wasn't a member of the Caldwells? Just as Everly was lost in her thoughts, Layla called out, "Evie, come here!"Snapping out of her reverie, she hurried over to Layla and asked, "What's wrong?""Who is this actor? The paparazzi caught you two together. Are you seeing him?" Layla asked, pointing to a news article on her phone. The headline read, "Dating Rumors Swirl as Noah Payne Drops Off Everly Caldwell Home."Everly's cheeks flushed. "Grandma, he's a famous actor. We're not dating. The shoot ended, and my assistant and I just caught a ride with him."But deep down, she liked Noah. He was undeniably handsome and always acted like a gentleman, both on and off the set. On top of that, he never cursed, didn't have any bad habits, had a strong character, and was well-respected in the entertainment industry.During filming, Noah always looked out for Everly. At any team gatherings, his presence gave her a sense of ease and security. How could anyone not be dr

Winston composed himself and said, "Millie, regardless of my status, I had to come today."He knew Millie didn't like him and that the Caldwells weren't exactly welcoming. Still, even if he couldn't get through the door today, he felt it was important to show up and prove he cared about Terrence's birthday."Yes, Ms. Caldwell. Since today is Mr. Caldwell's birthday, it's only fitting that Mr. Greer, as a younger guest, should be here," Eli chimed in, trying to smooth things over for Winston. However, Millie gave him a sharp look, clearly thinking he was being too meddlesome. Eli fell silent immediately.Winston then signaled Eli to leave the gifts and wait in the car. The latter nodded, offered a brief apology to Millie, and promptly left."Millie, I'll just drop off the gifts and exchange a few words with Mr. Caldwell before I go. Is that okay?" Winston looked at her again, his eyes pleading. Millie stared at him. For the first time, she realized just how persistent he was. Det

Winston's eyes reddened for a moment. He wanted to reach out and hold Millie's hand but couldn't muster the courage. As Millie looked into his eyes and felt his warmth, her heart was a whirlwind of emotions. She saw the helplessness in his gaze and caught a hint of tears.Winston's lips trembled as he asked with vulnerability, "Millie, do you hate me that much?"His voice was so soft it seemed almost ethereal, like a whisper lost in the breeze. The sorrow in Winston's voice only made Millie's smile softer. Yet, her response was harsh and unwavering. "Yes.""Do you wish I would just disappear?" Winston asked with a frown, his eyes betraying his inner turmoil. Millie looked up at him. She then bit her lip and nodded. Yes, she wanted him to vanish and stop bothering her."But Millie…" Winston called out softly. "From my perspective, am I not a victim too? If Joanna saved me, then I had no choice but to thank her, right?"He tried to explain. "Millie, I admit I was wrong. I don'

Winston's eyes were dark and inscrutable as he gazed at Millie. His lashes lowered slightly, leaving only a heavy silence hanging between them.Millie was convinced he didn't know what love was and had no concept of guilt. He saw himself as above everyone else, so how could he ever believe that her suffering was his fault?Winston's repeated apologies were nothing but empty words. It was as if he were going through the motions without feeling."You've treated your marriage like you would run your company, strict and uncompromising. But marriage isn't all that; it's about building a home and nurturing it with care. "Your partner needs your empathy and love. A company is a battlefield, where strategy, outcomes, and profits matter, and employees just want their paychecks."Having said her piece, Millie let out a deep sigh, her breath visible in the chilly air. She didn't even feel the tear that escaped from her eye. She thought she had moved past crying over Winston and that miser

Millie clearly didn't want Winston to disturb Terrence. That was why she kept him from entering. "Mr. Greer," Terrence greeted politely as he quickly straightened up."Mr. Caldwell." Winston bowed and subtly wiped a tear from the corner of his eye. Terrence sensed something was off between them. He even noticed Winston's red-rimmed eyes. Nevertheless, he chose not to ask what had happened and focused on the moment."It's late, Mr. Greer. It's so kind of you to come by at this hour. Why don't you come inside?" Terrence offered, gesturing toward the house. Neither Winston nor Millie had expected this. They exchanged a look before turning to Terrence. "Dad?" Millie called out.Terrence calmly replied, "Just because you two aren't a couple anymore doesn't mean you can't be friends. Besides, Mr. Greer is the CEO of Greer Group. It's only right that we treat him with respect, don't you think?"His words carried an underlying message—Winston was being kept at arm's length. He woul

While in the hospital, Millie rubbed her arms to keep warm. Then, the person on the bed woke up.Millie turned her head and looked at the person on the hospital bed. Winston's eyes were dull and showed signs of exhaustion. Their eyes met, and neither of them said a word. The nurse entered and saw that Winston was awake, so she patiently asked about his condition. He just kept looking at Millie without saying anything.Millie glanced at the nurse, signaling that she could continue with her work. Winston seemed fine now."You're not allowed to drink anymore," Millie said, her voice calm and indifferent. He closed his eyes, turned his head away, and didn't look at her again.Millie frowned and asked, "What do you mean by turning your head?"Winston remained silent, unable to speak because of the tightness in his throat.Millie poured a glass of water and asked him, "Would you like some water?"He still remained silent.Millie grew impatient and said, "Then I'll call Eli to take

Other than that word, Everly couldn't hear anything else."Dad, I can't hear what you're saying at all." Everly was becoming frustrated.Thomas exclaimed, "I said, Mills!""Yes, you're talking about Mills. And then? What about her?" Everly was extremely confused. She picked up her phone to check the time—it was already 3:00 am.She was about to lose it. From New Year's Eve till now, she did nothing but take care of Thomas."Dad, why don't we just go to sleep?" Everly didn't want to listen anymore.Whatever it was, she would be nice to Millie and not go up against her.She didn't like Millie before, but that was simply because she disliked how obsessed Millie was with romantic relationships."Oh! Ah!" Thomas suddenly started grumbling as he threw back the blanket. "Why can't you understand?"He was getting agitated.Everly was also getting extremely agitated. What exactly did she need to understand? He wasn't even speaking loud enough."I mean your sister! Millie!" Thomas s

Everly, feeling exasperated, helped Thomas off the couch and took him to the bathroom.Thomas lifted his head. His face was flushed, and his eyes dazed over. "My daughter, my daughter, I didn't throw up…"Everly looked at the mess on the ground and felt a headache coming on. Thomas had already thrown up, yet he still claimed he hadn't."You're drinking so much even though you can't handle it!" Everly shouted."What are you saying? It's like you're saying, saying, saying… ugh!" Thomas immediately leaned over the toilet, unable to finish his sentence. It was like he was speaking in tongue twisters, and no one could understand him.Everly sighed. She twitched her nose and turned to go outside to wait for him.Ten minutes went by, and Everly had finished tidying up the house. There was no sound coming from the washroom where Thomas was.Everly furrowed her brows and called out, "Dad?"Fine. It seemed like he was going to end up sleeping on the toilet.Everly walked over and, as ex

"I'll go get your medicine for you. Wait a moment." Millie intended to get the medicine from the bedside table. But then, Winston grabbed her arm. His palms were sweaty, and when he held her hand, it felt so hot it was as if he might burn her.Millie looked down at him.Winston looked up at her face, worried that if he let go, she might disappear. However, he knew very well that Millie wanted to leave, and he couldn't stop her."Millie, do you really have to give up on me?" Winston asked again, seeming determined to get an answer.Millie furrowed her brows, breathing heavily."Do you have to?" He looked at her. "Hmm?"Millie felt her heart tighten, and she just couldn't bring herself to say, "I have to let you go.""Winston," she called to him.Winston had no more strength left in him, as if he couldn't wait any longer to hear those words from her.He suddenly bent over and fell to the ground.Millie paused for a moment, then she quickly crouched down. Millie tightened her grip on the doorknob and turned to look at Winston. He stood next to the coffee table, his hands dangling awkwardly at his sides. The expression on his face seemed profoundly sorrowful. Although they were close, it felt as if a huge ocean stood between them when he looked at her, making it impossible for him to bridge the gap.Winston made a slight groaning sound, licking his lips and breathing heavily. His body was also swaying a bit. His stomach felt extremely uncomfortable, churning violently as if he might throw up at any moment. What bothered him even more was the comment Millie had just made. She said, "Let's end this."End it? But how would they just end it? Then were her seven years over just like that? Did his guilt and regret count for anything? She could move on from him, love someone else, and marry them. But what about him? He could never forgive himself for the rest of his life…Could they just end it?"Millie. Tell me, how are we supposed to

"Listen." Millie bit her lip but finally mustered up the courage to speak. "Let's end this between us."During those years with him, she caused her family a lot of worry and concern. She no longer wanted her family to worry about her.Or perhaps, she had become scared. She didn't want to gamble with her feelings anymore."Winston, I admit defeat. I don't have the courage to go through this with you again." Millie's voice was choked with emotion as she struggled to hold back her sadness while saying this.Winston instinctively reached for her hand."Millie, you promised me. You said you'd give me a chance. Why?" His eyes suddenly turned bloodshot, and his voice was so hoarse it seemed like he could barely speak."There's no reason. The new year has begun, and I hope you get better. Don't come looking for me anymore." Millie pulled away from Winston's hand, turned around, and got ready to leave. He suddenly hugged Millie tightly and said, "Don't…"Winston's voice seemed to pierce

Millie opened the car door and pushed Winston inside the car.Winston fastened his seatbelt in the dark by himself.Millie got into the car and saw him sitting there quietly, which made her smile and sigh.Millie drove at a moderate speed. The road was busy, with many people out to watch fireworks, while others were heading home.Winston looked to the driver's side, his gaze fixed on Millie.Millie could sense that he was watching her, but she kept avoiding eye contact. Her mind was preoccupied with the messages her dad had sent.Let him go… The question was, could she give up on him?Millie furrowed her brow and rested her hand on her forehead, deep in thought."Did I make you hate me…?" Winston's raspy voice suddenly sounded next to her ear.Millie looked over at him with confusion."Does my drinking make you hate me?" he asked again, just like a child afraid of upsetting Millie."No." Millie shook her head.Despite having drunk too much, he still made an effort to pay at

After the video call ended, Millie placed her phone on the table.Thomas said to Millie, "Hahaha! Mills, look, he can't handle his drink!"Having been the son-in-law of the Caldwell family for three years, I only just found out that he can't hold his liquor."Millie gave a wry smile. This statement seemed to be a double-edged sword. For three years, he hadn't visited the Caldwell family even once. Winston was truly ruthless at that time.Winston quickly explained to Millie, "Millie, I haven't had too much. I can still drink, honestly."His face was completely flushed, and it was clear that his speech was slurred. The two of them had already finished a bottle of vodka.Thomas was even ready to switch to a different type of alcohol.Thomas had spent many years away from home and was quite a heavy drinker. His drinking ability was different from that of Winston.Winston could ask Eli to drink on his behalf if he didn't want to, but if Thomas was trying to win resources for Rach

At the dining table, Thomas and Winston started drinking vodka. The TV was showing this year's New Year Gala while Millie was quietly eating pierogi. She hadn't had homemade pierogi for three years, and they tasted so good. It felt like being back in her childhood, celebrating the New Year with her family. That was what made the festival truly special.Millie looked at her grandparents with a constant smile on her face. She felt happier than she had ever been before. She wished her parents were here too. Oh, those two…Just as she was thinking about this, her phone rang. It was Terrence calling.Millie answered the call without saying a word and pointed the camera toward Thomas. This year, Thomas had no one to drink with, so he turned to Winston for company.Terrence was lounging in the sun when he caught sight of Winston.
