Chapter 4

Penulis: Gina Cinq
Millie couldn't help feeling dazed as she stared at Winston, who led her ahead.

Winston had done this back then, too. He'd held her hand as they escaped from those chasing after them.

Millie wouldn't have fallen so deeply in love with him if he had treated her poorly in the past. She wouldn't have married him, even if it meant she'd cut ties with her family.

But why was he here? And what was he doing now? Was he jealous because he saw her being close to another man?

However, Millie soon brushed those thoughts away. After all, Winston was heartless and had never once loved her. Why would he be jealous?

Millie felt herself get pushed into a washroom. The alcohol had taken over her body and left her slightly weak.

With a stern expression, Winston pinned Millie against the edge of the sink.

The washroom lights shined from above Winston. It blurred the outline of his features in Millie's eyes. Regardless, it wasn't difficult to see how attractive he was.

"We haven't officially gotten divorced, Millie!" Winston snarled through gritted teeth.

Millie's back pressed against the sink. So, the stunning butterfly tattoo on her back was reflected in the mirror. She ignored her heartache, looked into his eyes, and calmly said, "Mr. Greer, I've already signed the divorce papers. It means we're technically divorced."

Winston's gaze trembled as he stared at Millie. At the same time, his grip tightened on her wrist.

"Mr. Greer, huh?" he questioned softly.

Millie would never talk to him with such a tone before. She always beamed brilliantly. It was her first time addressing him as "Mr. Greer". It was formal, and it created a massive distance between them.

Before, she always stuck by his side and called him "Win". Her voice was always gentle and sweet whenever she uttered that nickname.

However, it upset Winston because he disliked those nicknames. So, Millie never used those nicknames again.

"Why? Is it wrong for me to call you that?" Millie narrowed her eyes while leaning closer to Winston.

It was the first time she got so close to him in their three years of marriage.

Their eyes locked on like magnets, and Millie noticed a hint of shock in Winston's dark gaze. She wondered if he was shocked that she had addressed him formally.

Millie studied his handsome face, which she had loved for many years. Then, she spoke with a low and slurred but seductively husky voice. "You're right. That's not the right way to address you. I should call you my ex-husband instead."

Winston's chest tightened as he gripped her wrist and forced her backward. "Are you taunting me, Millie?"

"Why would I dare to taunt you?" Millie snorted.

Her snarky attitude only frustrated Winston more.

"Are you alright, Ms. Caldwell?" a voice asked from outside the washroom.

Millie looked toward the exit just then.

Winston could tell that voice belonged to Nathan, the young scion of the Lynch family. He scoffed, taken aback that Nathan had fallen for Millie's seduction so soon.

Millie smirked, looked at Winston, and spoke seductively. "I'm okay, Mr. Lynch. Please wait out there for me. I'll only take a while."

She emphasized the words "Mr. Lynch" in front of Winston. She hinted that Winston, now "Mr. Greer", was no different from the other misters around her.

Winston's brows twisted into a deep, offended frown. How dare Millie see another man before his eyes?

"You wouldn't dare sleep with him, Millie!" he growled like an angered beast and pinched Millie's chin.

Millie shoved him away because she wasn't afraid of sleeping with Nathan. A sly gleam appeared in her eyes as she smirked. Yet, she replied with the utmost indifference, "You're crossing the line, ex-husband."

That sentence was enough to ignite a murderous fire in Winston.

He pulled Millie up while snaking an arm around her waist. Then, he pinned her against the wall and kissed her.

"Crossing the line, huh? I'll show you what it means to truly cross the line!" he thought.

Even though they had signed the divorce papers, they hadn't completed the legal procedures. Because of that, Millie was technically still Winston's wife. The fact that she offered to have sex with another man before his eyes was sheer humiliation.

Millie's eyes rounded in disbelief. She wondered if Winston had lost his mind.

He hadn't touched her once in their three years of marriage, yet he was kissing her now. His kiss was aggressive, and the way he bit her lips hurt her.

Yet, Millie felt herself go weak. It was unclear whether that was because Winston was a good kisser or because the alcohol was getting to her head.

She held the sink for support, then stomped hard on Winston's foot. Even so, Winston didn't release her. He only hugged her waist tighter and deepened the kiss.

Millie frowned as she wriggled to break free. She used all her might to push Winston away before slapping him.

The slap reverberated in the washroom, and the space fell deadly silent.

Winston's head faced the other direction due to the impact of the slap. He licked his lips, which had lipstick smudge from Millie and the scent of whiskey.

Millie heaved deep breaths. Her lipstick had blurred around the edges of her lips, and the rims of her eyes had reddened slightly.

Winston wiped the corner of his lips with his fingertips. Subsequently, his dark gaze snapped toward her as he snorted and smiled. He couldn't believe Millie had slapped him.

"Wasn't this what you wanted?" He stepped closer to her again, rage gathering in his chest and seeping from his eyes. "Didn't you want to seduce men by dressing like that? What's wrong? You're okay with fucking other men, but not me? Quit acting like you're so morally upstanding!"

"Get lost, Winston!" Millie yelled back at him, disappointment filling her eyes.

Could Winston not tell what she wanted? All Millie wanted was a bit of love from him, yet he never gave it to her. He only made her feel like a joke and was worth nothing.

Winston took in Millie's emotionless gaze and felt angry. "Get lost? Have you forgotten about how you desperately pleaded for me to marry you back then?"

Millie's heartbeat hitched, causing her chest to rise and fall rapidly. A frosty sensation washed over her once she heard his attempt at humiliating her. So, her love was nothing more than a tool he could use against her.

She had lowered her dignity, cut ties with her family, traded herself in as a hostage to kidnappers, dulled her shine, and many more things for Winston. She did all that for him.

Still, her efforts during these seven years weren't even worth mentioning to him.

Millie sniffled with tears in her eyes as she snorted. "I must've been blind to have fallen in love with you, Winston."

Winston looked into the mirror at Millie's reflection as she left the washroom. His eyes glazed over in surprise when he heard her words. Then, he staggered before leaning against the wall.

"I must've been blind to have fallen in love with you, Winston."

Her words echoed in his mind.

He let out an abrupt but heavy laugh. Little did he know he had lost the woman who'd loved him unconditionally for seven years.

After Millie left the washroom, she kept wiping her lips. The thought of Winston kissing her after he had kissed Joanna repulsed Millie. She felt filthy.

Eyes reddening, she went to find and bring Rachel out of that place.

"Are you okay, girl?" Rachel was confused.

Millie cried while choking up and saying, "Duh! I'm just peachy!"

She held her high heels while walking barefoot on the streets. Ignoring the curious looks of passersby, she yelled out with determination, "I'll never love Winston again! Never again!"

Millie had struggled all these years and was in so much pain. Not only that, but she found herself stupid for wasting her life away over a man.

She swore she'd never see Winston again. Instead, she wanted to get her life back on track. She'd move on for good to have her happy ending.

Rachel ran after Millie to hug the latter.

Millie cried but didn't make a sound, and her entire body trembled with sorrow.

Rachel's heart ached for the former.

Millie didn't recall how she had gone home. It was already the afternoon of the following day when she awoke.

She sat on the bed in a blur, massaging her temples with one hand because of her pounding headache.

That was when a ding sounded.

She turned to pick up her phone calmly but fell silent when she saw the news.

The headline read, "Greer Group's CEO, Winston, and the Lowell family's heiress attend a press conference for his subsidiary company's new cosmetic product launch."

Millie clicked on the video to see Joanna linking arms with Winston.

Joanna smiled and occasionally waved at the reporters. The couple seemed like a good match.

Millie's finger tightened around the phone as her eyes burned.

Winston had never attended any events with Millie. Now that they had just gotten divorced, he was already eager to introduce his beloved to everyone.

Memories of him forcefully kissing Millie surfaced in her mind. She felt his behavior was ironic.

There was a sudden knock at the door, causing Millie to look up.

She suppressed her sorrow and cast a bland look ahead. "Come in."

Terrence donned a navy suit. He opened the door and grinned. "Mills, don't forget what you promised me last night!"

Millie froze, not knowing what she had promised him.

A banquet took place that night on the 33rd floor of Sablen Hotel. One could see the bustling night view of Yerwick City through the floor-to-ceiling windows.A pleasant piano tune filled the space as Millie leaned lazily against the bar before her. She swirled the red wine in her glass out of boredom while her striking eyes darted around. She garnered some heated looks from men at the event. They wanted to strike up a conversation with her but dared not do it.Millie wore a long black dress with spaghetti straps. The skirt part had some pleating that showed off her slim calves. Meanwhile, the dress flowed loosely on her body, perfectly highlighting her curves. Her curled locks cascaded down her back. It allowed her butterfly tattoo to peek through occasionally, captivating those around her. That was when her phone chimed. She looked down at it and noticed it was a text from Terrence. It read, "Have you made it to the banquet?"Sighing, Millie texted, "Yeah."Terrence had pic

The banquet hall fell into chaos.Everyone set their wine glasses down to gather and see what was happening."Has anyone called the ambulance?""When is the ambulance coming? The Harrison family won't spare us if anything happens to Mr. Harrison!"Millie looked ahead and saw the roughly 50-something-year-old Patrick on the ground with a ghastly pale face. She glanced at the time, realizing it was a 15-minute journey to the hospital from here. After all, it was rush hour then. It would be too late if they waited for the ambulance to arrive. Plus, no one in the hotel stepped up to resolve the issue. Millie noticed Patrick's condition was worsening with time. Given that she had studied medicine since she was young, she couldn't help worrying about him. With a frown, she stepped forward. "Let me take a look."Everyone's attention settled on Millie before they scoffed. "Can you even do it? Everyone knows your family, the Caldwells, have a background in medicine. BUt you're just a

It turned out to be Millie.Joanna fell to the ground, so Winston bolted to help her.Millie knelt, undid Patrick's necktie at lightning speed, and tossed it aside.Joanna shook her head at Winston before frowning at Millie. "What are you doing, Mills? Can you even handle it?"The bystanders were also in shock."Can a worthless loser like her handle this if even Ms. Lowell can't?""Mr. Harrison is a big deal! How dare she undo his top on such an occasion? What on earth is she planning?"Joanna pursed her lips when she heard everyone insult Millie. Then, she spoke gently, "Don't force things just because everyone is hard on you. Mills, the Caldwell family dotes on you a lot, but this isn't the same as you throwing tantrums at home. What'll happen if you kill—" Panic coursed through her veins as she spoke, and she even grabbed Millie's arm. She acted as if she was genuinely concerned for Millie."Shut up." Millie flung the former's arm off, narrowing her eyes with a steely edge

The man was baffled and immediately replied, "I-I was only kidding. Did you take it seriously?""Of course. Why wouldn't I? I've always taken things seriously since I was a little girl." Millie picked up a wine glass and sipped on its contents. She recalled how Winston defended, carried, and made all sorts of gentle gestures toward Joanna. That enraged her to no end. Was she really worse than Joanna? And how so? Why did Winston always see her as an eyesore?"How could you be so petty, Millie? It's no wonder Winston dislikes you!" the man thundered.Millie looked at him. The mention of Winston poked her in a sensitive spot. How dare these people call her petty? They would've reacted negatively if she hadn't saved Patrick earlier. They wouldn't have spared her if she asked them to, would they? Of course not! They would only stomp on her dignity harder and cast her into more torture.Since that was the case, what right did they have to call her petty?Millie smashed the wine g

Millie's heart missed a beat, and her eyes widened in shock. She couldn't believe Winston had said that.Hadn't he refused to acknowledge their marriage all along?Winston noticed her thunderstruck reaction, and for some reason, he felt a sense of frustration. Why was she so taken aback just because he said he was her husband? With a look of confusion, Henry gestured between the two of them and asked, "You two are married?"Millie immediately looked at Henry, feeling apologetic for having unintentionally tricked him.Henry looked at Millie and Winston with a disappointed gaze. He felt as though they were toying with him and not showing him any respect. However, he was indeed attracted to Millie."I admire you very much, Millie. I won't pry into your matters, but I'm willing to help you if you need me," Henry said with utmost sincerity.Alas, that made Millie feel even more apologetic. Winston was taken aback by Millie's response. She and Selma got along the best, and Selma doted on her as if she were Selma's biological granddaughter.Whenever he did something he shouldn't have, Selma would immediately stand up for Millie. In fact, she even went to the company to rebuke him several times!Yet, Millie was now claiming that she wouldn't be attending Selma's birthday celebration. Naturally, Winston didn't believe her.Frowning slightly, Winston said in a fairly neutral tone, "Millie, let's just move on from the incident involving you pushing Joanna into the pool.""Move on? What do you mean by that? By moving on now, you're just solidifying the accusation that I did it, aren't you?" Millie swiftly retorted.Winston didn't want to dwell on this matter anymore. With a displeased look in his eyes, he snapped, "Can you stop kicking up a fuss?"Millie eyed him with increasing disappointment. Even now, he assumed she was just throwing a tantrum.Looking down, she chuck

Millie went back to the villa to retrieve the ring, but when she keyed in the password to open the door, she heard a robotic voice stating, "Error. You have keyed in the wrong password."She took another look at the house to confirm that it was Winston's place before keying in the password again. Once more, it said she had used the wrong password.Did the password change? After Millie failed the key in the password for the third time and also failed to unlock the door through the fingerprint scanner, the alarm started beeping. She was now certain she was right—the password had been changed. It was as expected of Winston. He had done it so quickly.Millie wondered just how deep his disdain for her ran. Was he so keen to never see her in this house again? He had already changed the password when she had only left two days ago.She got her phone out and was just about to call Winston when the door opened, and a familiar voice rang out."Mills?"Millie swiftly turned around and imm

Millie watched as Winston grabbed Joanna's wrist while ignoring her.The sense of weightlessness as she fell felt particularly vivid to her, and at the same time, her heart was filled with despair.Winston had never chosen her—not once, not even when she was also in genuine danger."Mills!" Joanna pretended to cry out in concern.Millie stumbled down to the turn in the staircase before coming to a stop. The pain she felt in both her body and her heart made her feel suffocated.Slowly raising her head, she saw both Winston and Joanna looking down at her.Words could not describe the embarrassment, anguish, and despair she felt. She didn't fall far enough to put her life at risk, but she had certainly lost all her strength.Winston glared at Millie with a look of abhorrence as he rebuked her, "It was only a few days ago when you pushed Joanna into the water! While in the hospital, Millie rubbed her arms to keep warm. Then, the person on the bed woke up.Millie turned her head and looked at the person on the hospital bed. Winston's eyes were dull and showed signs of exhaustion. Everly was becoming frustrated.Thomas exclaimed, "I said, Mills!""Yes, you're talking about Mills. And then? What about her?" Everly was extremely confused. She picked up her phone to check the time—it was already 3:00 am.She was about to lose it. From New Year's Eve till now, she did nothing but take care of Thomas."Dad, why don't we just go to sleep?" Everly didn't want to listen anymore.Whatever it was, she would be nice to Millie and not go up against her.She didn't like Millie before, but that was simply because she disliked how obsessed Millie was with romantic relationships."Oh! Thomas had already thrown up, yet he still claimed he hadn't."You're drinking so much even though you can't handle it!" Everly shouted."What are you saying? It's like you're saying, saying, saying… ugh!" Thomas immediately leaned over the toilet, unable to finish his sentence. "I'll go get your medicine for you. Wait a moment." Millie intended to get the medicine from the bedside table. But then, Winston grabbed her arm. His palms were sweaty, and when he held her hand, it felt so hot it was as if he might burn her.Millie looked down at him.Winston looked up at her face, worried that if he let go, she might disappear. However, he knew very well that Millie wanted to leave, and he couldn't stop her."Millie, do you really have to give up on me?" Winston asked again, seeming determined to get an answer.Millie furrowed her brows, breathing heavily."Do you have to?" He looked at her. "Hmm?"Millie felt her heart tighten, and she just couldn't bring herself to say, "I have to let you go.""Winston," she called to him.Winston had no more strength left in him, as if he couldn't wait any longer to hear those words from her.He suddenly bent over and fell to the ground.Millie paused for a moment, then she quickly crouched down. Millie tightened her grip on the doorknob and turned to look at Winston. He stood next to the coffee table, his hands dangling awkwardly at his sides. The expression on his face seemed profoundly sorrowful. Although they were close, it felt as if a huge ocean stood between them when he looked at her, making it impossible for him to bridge the gap.Winston made a slight groaning sound, licking his lips and breathing heavily. His body was also swaying a bit. His stomach felt extremely uncomfortable, churning violently as if he might throw up at any moment. What bothered him even more was the comment Millie had just made. She said, "Let's end this."End it? But how would they just end it? Then were her seven years over just like that? Did his guilt and regret count for anything? She could move on from him, love someone else, and marry them. But what about him? He could never forgive himself for the rest of his life…Could they just end it?"Millie. Tell me, how are we supposed to

"Listen." Millie bit her lip but finally mustered up the courage to speak. "Let's end this between us."During those years with him, she caused her family a lot of worry and concern. She no longer wanted her family to worry about her.Or perhaps, she had become scared. She didn't want to gamble with her feelings anymore."Winston, I admit defeat. I don't have the courage to go through this with you again." Millie's voice was choked with emotion as she struggled to hold back her sadness while saying this.Winston instinctively reached for her hand."Millie, you promised me. You said you'd give me a chance. Why?" His eyes suddenly turned bloodshot, and his voice was so hoarse it seemed like he could barely speak."There's no reason. The new year has begun, and I hope you get better. Don't come looking for me anymore." The road was busy, with many people out to watch fireworks, while others were heading home.Winston looked to the driver's side, his gaze fixed on Millie.Millie could sense that he was watching her, but she kept avoiding eye contact. Her mind was preoccupied with the messages her dad had sent.Let him go… The question was, could she give up on him?Millie furrowed her brow and rested her hand on her forehead, deep in thought."Did I make you hate me…?" Mills, look, he can't handle his drink!"Having been the son-in-law of the Caldwell family for three years, I only just found out that he can't hold his liquor."Millie gave a wry smile. This statement seemed to be a double-edged sword. For three years, he hadn't visited the Caldwell family even once. Winston was truly ruthless at that time.Winston quickly explained to Millie, "Millie, I haven't had too much. I can still drink, honestly."His face was completely flushed, and it was clear that his speech was slurred. The two of them had already finished a bottle of vodka.Thomas was even ready to switch to a different type of alcohol.Thomas had spent many years away from home and was quite a heavy drinker.
