Chapter 410

Author: Gina Cinq
Layla's lack of interest was obvious, and Arthur couldn't help but feel disheartened.

Thus, Millie could only help her grandfather. She chimed in, "Grandma, it's a rare herb, you know."

Upon hearing those words, Layla narrowed her eyes. A herb? If it was an herb, then she was definitely interested.

Arthur sighed and commented, "See that, Mills? Your grandmother is more interested in herbs than anything else. Even more than me!"

Millie chuckled as she grabbed a bag of chips.

The moment Layla learned that it was an herb, she began carefully unwrapping the box. She slowly peeled away the layers of wrapping. As soon as the box opened and the Aspher came into view, her eyes lit up with joy.

Layla looked up at Millie, then at Arthur. She was so overwhelmed with excitement that she struggled to find the words.

Was it Aspher? Did Millie and Arthur really get her the rare herb?

"Is this really Aspher?" Layla asked in disbelief.

Millie nodded firmly. That was indeed Aspher.

Layla was about to answer the female researcher's question when her gaze fell on Millie. "Professor Cadmore, why did you bring an irrelevant person into the lab?""What do you mean by irrelevant? This is my granddaughter!" Layla snapped, her displeasure evident in her tone. The researcher sized Millie up with hostility. Despite that, Millie wasn't bothered by her look. She was indeed an outsider, after all. "Naomi, this is my granddaughter. She's not an outsider," Layla repeated. Naomie Jaeger was an important figure in the lab. However, her arrogance often rubbed people the wrong way. She looked down on others and considered herself superior. Yet, the rarity of such talent meant that Layla and the team had to put up with her. She was an outstanding researcher selected from a hundred candidates. Despite her flaws, her skills were undeniable.Naomi couldn't be bothered with that. She then said, "Professor Cadmore, I've been in this lab for many years. There's something I nee

Naomi swallowed hard and asked from behind, "Aspher?"Millie smiled. Naomi was a tough woman to handle. She hooked her arm around Layla's, her confusion evident as she asked, "Grandma, if she wants to leave, why not just let her go? The lab can just manage fine without her."Layla sighed. "What do you mean 'let her go'? She was just venting. Did you really think she meant it? It's true that our research hasn't made any progress in years, so it's only natural that everyone's feeling frustrated."Naomi may be arrogant, but she's not a bad person. I just need to persuade her, and she'll stay."Millie glanced at Layla's face. Despite being 70, she was still as strong-willed and spirited as ever. She didn't look her age at all, more like someone in her 50s. Her posture was impeccable. While her skin had started to sag a little, it didn't diminish her looks. Millie couldn't help but think that Layla was tough on the outside but had a heart of gold. If it were up to Millie, she would

Millie cast a meaningful glance at Layla. She wanted to refuse but was at a loss for words. The people around them nodded in agreement, saying, "This Aspher is a real game-changer. Ms. Caldwell, you must thank this person properly.""Yes, our research project is expected to make progress because of it. You should definitely express your gratitude!"Layla joked, "Did you hear that? It's everyone's wish."Millie smiled and nodded, showing that she had heard them. As she left the lab, the researchers made a point to thank her again. …On her way home, Millie called Marvin and said casually, "Could you arrange a meeting with Paxton for me?"Given Paxton's age, she figured it was appropriate to address him by his first name."What's up? Are you perhaps interested in this kid?" Marvin teased. Millie clicked her tongue in frustration. "Seriously, Marvin? He's so young, and I'm significantly older. How could you suggest that?"Marvin chuckled but didn't respond. After hanging up,

Winston was about to offer to buy the bag for Joanna. At that moment, the sales associate informed Joanna, "Sorry, Ms. Lowell, but Ms. Caldwell has already bought this bag. This is the only one we have."Joanna frowned when she heard that. Millie, on the other hand, pursed her lips. She couldn't help but find the situation amusing. Their shared tastes in dresses, bags, and men were just infuriating."I'm sorry, but this bag is mine," Millie said with a gentle smile.Joanna's frown deepened when she caught a hint of smugness in Millie's eyes. She tightened her hold on Winston's arm. It was merely a bag. What was there to boast about? After all, she had Winston.Seeing Joanna's hand tightly gripping Winston's arm, Millie felt a wave of conflicted emotions. She had gained everything, yet she had lost the man she loved. She couldn't tell if her situation was a victory or a defeat. The more Joanna looked at Millie, the more irritated she grew. "Ms. Caldwell, your bag is ready," th

Winston froze momentarily. With a frown, he turned to look in the direction Millie had gone. So she had actually asked Paxton out for a meal? Winston then responded to Paxton's text, "Decline."Paxton immediately wrote back, "Uncle Winston, she said she just wants to thank me for the Aspher. She doesn't have any other motives." Winston didn't reply. In no time, Paxton asked again, "Should I go?'Winston was about to text him back when Joanna grabbed his hand, smiling as she asked, "What are you looking at?" Shaking his head, Winston locked his phone screen. Joanna grinned from ear to ear and suggested, "Win, let's go grab a bite together.""Okay." Winston nodded. After paying, they left the mall. On the drive to the restaurant, Paxton sent another message. "I couldn't turn down the invitation, so I'm going. Don't worry, Uncle Winston. I won't mess it up by mentioning that the Aspher was from you."Winston read the text but remained silent. If Paxton wanted to go, so be i

Paxton immediately shook his head. "It's nothing. There's no need to dwell on it.""No, this is a big deal," Millie replied, shaking her head. Paxton waved his hand dismissively but couldn't resist sneaking a glance at Winston. Did he hear that? Millie just expressed her gratitude and said it was a big deal. "By the way, how did you manage to get the Aspher?" Millie asked as she poured a glass of water, her interest piqued. Paxton blinked repeatedly. Of course, it was Winston who had gotten it."I bought it off someone," he answered with a smile. Millie pressed further, "Was it expensive?Paxton shook his head in response. It didn't cost him a dime. Millie shrugged and asked, "Paxton, since you seem to know a lot about herbs, do you happen to have any other rare ones on hand?" She took a sip of water after speaking, and her eyes were filled with anticipation. However, Paxton simply shook his head. With that, Millie didn't push the matter and steered the conversation ba

"Don't be ridiculous," Winston warned, his voice chilly and distant. It was as though he was deliberately avoiding the situation.Millie stood rooted to the spot. Right then, her gaze inadvertently locked with Winston's dark eyes. When he frowned, Millie did too. Just like that, they stared at each other, neither willing to break eye contact. It was only when Joanna turned that Millie's attention was finally drawn away. Millie's hands, resting at her sides, clenched slightly as she asked, "Does the Aspher belong to Winston?"Before Winston could respond, Joanna's icy voice interjected, "Who else would it be?"Millie ignored Joanna and turned her attention to Winston, wanting to hear his explanation. If the Aspher was indeed his, did that mean he was the one who sent the herb to the auction house overseas? And if that was the case, why didn't Winston give it to Millie directly? Why did he have someone else to do it instead?Millie's tone was calm as she asked again, "Mr. Greer,

Millie turned and watched Winston walk away, her expression growing more troubled. When Winston glanced back and met Millie's eyes, it seemed like he had something to say. But in the end, he chose to chase after Joanna. Millie remained quiet. A moment later, she chuckled wryly. What was all this about? When she looked up again, she saw Paxton standing before her. The young man awkwardly scratched his head, looking somewhat helpless. Millie approached him and said, "Let's finish this meal."Whether the Aspher was his or Winston's, her purpose today was to treat them to a meal. Winston probably thought that if he were the one offering the Aspher, Millie wouldn't accept them. But he was overthinking it. For something relevant to Layla's research, she was extremely cautious. She wouldn't let any personal grudges interfere with the research's success. Even if Winston had been the one to offer the herb that day, Millie would have accepted it, though she would have raised the p

While in the hospital, Millie rubbed her arms to keep warm. Then, the person on the bed woke up.Millie turned her head and looked at the person on the hospital bed. Winston's eyes were dull and showed signs of exhaustion. Their eyes met, and neither of them said a word. The nurse entered and saw that Winston was awake, so she patiently asked about his condition. He just kept looking at Millie without saying anything.Millie glanced at the nurse, signaling that she could continue with her work. Winston seemed fine now."You're not allowed to drink anymore," Millie said, her voice calm and indifferent. He closed his eyes, turned his head away, and didn't look at her again.Millie frowned and asked, "What do you mean by turning your head?"Winston remained silent, unable to speak because of the tightness in his throat.Millie poured a glass of water and asked him, "Would you like some water?"He still remained silent.Millie grew impatient and said, "Then I'll call Eli to take

Other than that word, Everly couldn't hear anything else."Dad, I can't hear what you're saying at all." Everly was becoming frustrated.Thomas exclaimed, "I said, Mills!""Yes, you're talking about Mills. And then? What about her?" Everly was extremely confused. She picked up her phone to check the time—it was already 3:00 am.She was about to lose it. From New Year's Eve till now, she did nothing but take care of Thomas."Dad, why don't we just go to sleep?" Everly didn't want to listen anymore.Whatever it was, she would be nice to Millie and not go up against her.She didn't like Millie before, but that was simply because she disliked how obsessed Millie was with romantic relationships."Oh! What exactly did she need to understand? He wasn't even speaking loud enough."I mean your sister! Millie!" Thomas s

Thomas had already thrown up, yet he still claimed he hadn't."You're drinking so much even though you can't handle it!" Everly shouted."What are you saying? It's like you're saying, saying, saying… ugh!" Thomas immediately leaned over the toilet, unable to finish his sentence. It was like he was speaking in tongue twisters, and no one could understand him.Everly sighed. "I'll go get your medicine for you. Wait a moment." Millie intended to get the medicine from the bedside table. But then, Winston grabbed her arm. His palms were sweaty, and when he held her hand, it felt so hot it was as if he might burn her.Millie looked down at him.Winston looked up at her face, worried that if he let go, she might disappear. However, he knew very well that Millie wanted to leave, and he couldn't stop her."Millie, do you really have to give up on me?" Winston asked again, seeming determined to get an answer.Millie furrowed her brows, breathing heavily."Do you have to?" He looked at her. "Hmm?"Millie felt her heart tighten, and she just couldn't bring herself to say, "I have to let you go.""Winston," she called to him.Winston had no more strength left in him, as if he couldn't wait any longer to hear those words from her.He suddenly bent over and fell to the ground.Millie paused for a moment, then she quickly crouched down. Millie tightened her grip on the doorknob and turned to look at Winston. He stood next to the coffee table, his hands dangling awkwardly at his sides. The expression on his face seemed profoundly sorrowful. Although they were close, it felt as if a huge ocean stood between them when he looked at her, making it impossible for him to bridge the gap.Winston made a slight groaning sound, licking his lips and breathing heavily. His body was also swaying a bit. His stomach felt extremely uncomfortable, churning violently as if he might throw up at any moment. What bothered him even more was the comment Millie had just made. She said, "Let's end this."End it? But how would they just end it? Then were her seven years over just like that? Did his guilt and regret count for anything? She could move on from him, love someone else, and marry them. But what about him? He could never forgive himself for the rest of his life…Could they just end it?"Millie. Tell me, how are we supposed to

"Listen." Millie bit her lip but finally mustered up the courage to speak. "Let's end this between us."During those years with him, she caused her family a lot of worry and concern. She no longer wanted her family to worry about her.Or perhaps, she had become scared. She didn't want to gamble with her feelings anymore."Winston, I admit defeat. I don't have the courage to go through this with you again." Millie's voice was choked with emotion as she struggled to hold back her sadness while saying this.Winston instinctively reached for her hand."Millie, you promised me. You said you'd give me a chance. Why?" His eyes suddenly turned bloodshot, and his voice was so hoarse it seemed like he could barely speak."There's no reason. The new year has begun, and I hope you get better. Don't come looking for me anymore." Millie pulled away from Winston's hand, turned around, and got ready to leave. He suddenly hugged Millie tightly and said, "Don't…"Winston's voice seemed to pierce

The road was busy, with many people out to watch fireworks, while others were heading home.Winston looked to the driver's side, his gaze fixed on Millie.Millie could sense that he was watching her, but she kept avoiding eye contact. Her mind was preoccupied with the messages her dad had sent.Let him go… The question was, could she give up on him?Millie furrowed her brow and rested her hand on her forehead, deep in thought."Did I make you hate me…?" Winston's raspy voice suddenly sounded next to her ear.Millie looked over at him with confusion."Does my drinking make you hate me?" he asked again, just like a child afraid of upsetting Millie."No." Millie shook her head.Despite having drunk too much, he still made an effort to pay at

After the video call ended, Millie placed her phone on the table.Thomas said to Millie, "Hahaha! Mills, look, he can't handle his drink!"Having been the son-in-law of the Caldwell family for three years, I only just found out that he can't hold his liquor."Millie gave a wry smile. This statement seemed to be a double-edged sword. For three years, he hadn't visited the Caldwell family even once. Winston was truly ruthless at that time.Winston quickly explained to Millie, "Millie, I haven't had too much. I can still drink, honestly."His face was completely flushed, and it was clear that his speech was slurred. The two of them had already finished a bottle of vodka.Thomas was even ready to switch to a different type of alcohol.Thomas had spent many years away from home and was quite a heavy drinker. His drinking ability was different from that of Winston.Winston could ask Eli to drink on his behalf if he didn't want to, but if Thomas was trying to win resources for Rach

At the dining table, Thomas and Winston started drinking vodka. The TV was showing this year's New Year Gala while Millie was quietly eating pierogi. She hadn't had homemade pierogi for three years, and they tasted so good. It felt like being back in her childhood, celebrating the New Year with her family. That was what made the festival truly special.Millie looked at her grandparents with a constant smile on her face. She felt happier than she had ever been before. She wished her parents were here too. Oh, those two…Just as she was thinking about this, her phone rang. It was Terrence calling.Millie answered the call without saying a word and pointed the camera toward Thomas. This year, Thomas had no one to drink with, so he turned to Winston for company.Terrence was lounging in the sun when he caught sight of Winston.
