ANNA
My left hook connects to the face of the one eyed rogue.
"TELL ME WHY YOU WERE AT THE BORDER!!" I grab his shirt and command him to answer me.
I've been interrogating this guy for over an hour and was starting to lose my patience.
He spits his blood on the floor. "I'm not telling you nothing, bitch." He grins an ugly, bloody grin. Glaring at me with his good eye.
"Fine." I stand up and stroll around him and the chair he's chained to. I run my fingers up his good arm, around to his back and down to his casted arm. He watched as I walked around, snapping his head to follow. I pause. The corner of my mouth ticks up as I grab the fingers of his broken arm and bend them backwards.
He screams in agony.
"ANSWER ME!!"
"OKAY. OKAY." I let go. "Fuck...alright. some guy, okay. He comes into a bar I was at in Delwork. Says he'll pay me if I get some Intel for him."
I stood with my arms crossed. "What kind of Intel?"
"Like border weakness, numbers that kind of shit. I needed the cash so I said sure."
"The guy. What'd he look like?"
"Oh come, he'll fucking kill me...." the guy whined.
I lean on his chair putting my head close. "If you don't tell me what I want to know, I'll fucking kill you first."
"Jeez lady, you sure you're not a dude?"
I stood up, smiled and backhanded his right cheek.
"Alright! Fuck! I've never seen him before, but he's got a dragon tattoo on his right arm. Looks weird. Like a crest or something. And his eyes were like this light blue. Almost white. He never told me his name, but I'm supposed to meet him tomorrow in Delwork." The guy sat defeated chained to his chair in silver cuffs.
"You sure about this?" I said concerned.
He glanced up at me. "Yeah. You don't forget someone like that."
I walked across the interrogation room, grabbed my jacket and headed for the door.
The rogue looked at me. "Hey, you're not gonna kill me right?"
I turn and shoot him an evil grin. "Once the Dragon Pack hear of your confession, you'll be begging for death."
"Yo...you aren't gonna tell them, right?....right?...." his face was full panic.
I chuckle and leave the room to the rogue screaming, begging for me not to tell them.
I leave the holding area and stop by the showers to grab a towel, wiping the rogues blood off my hands as I walk into Drake's office.
Drake is seated behind his desk with River seated in the chair across from him.
River sees me enter and immediately stands at attention. "Agent Riker."
I snort. "Relax, soldier."
He goes into a relaxed stance but it's still stiff as a board.
Drake looks at my bloody towel. "Please tell me you got something."
I leaned against a bookshelf across from Drake's desk and cross my feet, still wiping my fingers. "Oh, I got something, but you're not going to like it."
Drake leans back in his chair and rubs his forehead. "Report." He sighed.
I put my hands down on the bookshelf. "It's the Dragons. Specifically, Karver." I glance between Drake and River.
River raises a brow. "Karver?"
Drake stands up and walks to a file cabinet. He pulls a file out and walks back. He tosses it on the desk in front of River. "Cole Karver. Mean Son of a bitch. Would sooner kill you then look at ya. We've been hunting this bastard for five years. He's dangerous. He responsible for the attacks on Helana, Silver Lake and Timber. Killed hundreds. Intel suggests he's the Dragons Beta."
I smirk. "And I know where he's going to be tomorrow night."
Drake raises an eyebrow looking at me.
River opens a file to show a photo of an evil face. White murderous eyes. He's running his fingers through platinum blonde hair.
Drake taps the photo with his finger. "If we get this bastard, that'll blow the Dragons wide open."
River picks up the file and flips through it. "I don't know. This guy's heavily guarded. Looks like a suicide mission. You'll need our help." He closes the file and drops it on the desk.
Rivers words send anger through me. I push off the shelf, raise my finger to him. "Nuh uh. No way. This is my case." I tap my chest with my finger. "I'm not about to let some politicians send their political muscle in to fuck everything up. Forget it."
"Riker stand down." Drake sits. "No one's taking your case, but River's right. Karvers a heavy hitter. We need artillery we just don't have. The security unit could provide that for us."
River looks at me. "We just want to assist that's all."
I walk straight up to River's face. Stare him dead in the eye. "I have been hunting this fucker for five fucking years. If you or any one of you security unit assholes get in my way, I will end your career faster then you can blink." River swallowed hard.
He put his hands up. "No. Don't worry. We'll just be back up. Just let me call my commanders, bring them up to speed and I'll report with their recommendations. We only move on your word."
I squint my eyes. "Fine." I turn to Drake. "Call me when you have a plan."
"Will do. Now, go get a beer or something and calm down."
I nod, fling my black motorcycle jacket over my shoulder and walk out.
I'm half way across the station parking lot, when I hear my name. "RIKER!"
I turn and River is jogging up. "Hey. Um....look I hope you don't feel like I'm stepping in on you. I get the feeling this is important...."
"Damn right it is..." I turn and start walking.
He jogs again to fall in line beside me. "I really just want to help. This guy......uh...Karver....he looks like one bad ass dude. You could use all the help you can get."
We stop and face each other. "For five years this bastard has slipped through my fingers. Five years, he shows up then he goes ghost. When we finally get a bead on him, he disappears again. I can't lose him this time. He needs to pay for the blood he's spilled." My face scrunches up as I look down.
River tries to search for my eyes. "With my help, we'll get him. I promise you that."
I half smile. "You...uh...have time for a drink?"
He smiles. "Yeah. I think I do."
The Falcon isn't far from the station so we walk the 3 blocks.
We walk in and grab a couple of beers and sit at a table. It's early so the bar is barely half full.
River picks at his bottle. "I know it's not my business, but....you want to talk about it?"
I raise my beer. "Talk about what?" I take a drink.
"Why this is so personal to you." He tipped his beer back.
I put my bottle down. "No. Karvers bad news. That's enough."
He leaned on the table. "Okay. Just seemed like a personal vendetta to me."
"I just take my job seriously. Murderers like Karver are a threat to all of us. What happened to other packs, can happen to us. I refuse to let that happen."
"But you know we're all a team right. You don't have to carry this yourself."
"Yes I do. If it wasn't for me, Timber wouldn't have happened. Hundreds would be alive today." I swallowed hard looking at my bottle.
River looked confused. "How was it your fault?"
I shook my head. "No." I sighed. "Look can we talk about something else?"
He sat back in his chair. "Sure. How about why isn't a girl, with your skill set, not part of the security unit."
I lean back and laugh. "Me? Part of you guys? You're joking right?"
"No." He rests his arms on the table. "I mean yeah, your attitude is a bit....harsh, but you got skills and brains to boot. We could really use you."
I raise my beer. "I ain't no puppet. Sorry."
"I'm not a puppet." He scrunched his brow.
I take a swig of my beer. "Oh, please. 'Yes, sir. Right away, sir.' You're a puppet. Just a yes man with a license to kill."
He crosses his arms. "And what, you don't follow orders?"
I put my bottle down. "No. I follow my gut. I do what's necessary at the time. Sure we have protocol, but to make a good protector, you need to be able to say fuck protocol. You security unit guys can't do that."
"Listen. I don't think you fully get what being with our unit really means. Why don't you try it out? If you don't like it, go back to border." He emptied his beer.
I put my arm on the back of my chair and crossed my legs. "Why are you trying so hard to sell this to me?"
He picked at his empty bottle. "I don't know. Because I've seen you fight. You're good. I'd be happy to have you around."
I raised a brow. "You'd be happy....."
He perked up when he realized what he said. "Um. Well, not...me personally...." He laughed nervously. "I meant we, like the unit. Of course, why...would...I..."
I smile a bit as he tries to back himself out of the hole he just dug. "Want another?" I point to his beer.
He rubs the back of his neck. His cheeks red. "Uh...yeah."
I wave to the bartender for two more and the waitress brings them over.

RIVER
I'm sitting here. Listening to her talk. I can't get over how sexy she is.. she radiates beauty. I'm trying to hide my interest, but it's damn hard. Her eyes are mesmerizing. She's a complete knock out. And yeah, she talks like a dude, but for some reason I like that. She's a hard ass and that makes her so attractive.
As I find out more about her, I find myself feeling in awe of her strength. Her independence. She could literally not give two shits about anything. I'm actually jealous of her freedom while still being in a pack. If only I had her out look on life, I'd probably not spend my days fighting with my dad.
But, I didn't miss her baggage. She's blames herself for what happened in Timber. From what I remember, four years ago, Timber was a relatively decent sized pack. When the Dragons attacked, they left no one alive. I remember my dad and the other alphas arguing about what to do. I remember seeing the trucks of security units driving through town to Timber in hopes of finding survivors. I remember a few days later, when they came back with the solem news that everyone was killed. Murdered.
I don't know how it was Rikers fault, but she seems to be determined to beat herself up for it. And possibly get herself killed.
I know I can turn her pain and anger into something more. I know if I can reign her in somehow, get her on board, she'd be valuable to me and our packs. But, from what I've seen so far, it's not going to be easy. She's tough as nails and won't let anyone tell her what to do.
Karver will be a start. If I can help her shut him down, she'll see that her impression of my unit is wrong. She'll have to join us. Join me. Be with me.
"Earth to soldier boy....." her snapping fingers in my face break my thoughts. "You in there? Where'd ya go?" I shake my head and look. She smiling.
I giggle. "Uh sorry. Just got lost there for a second. Must be the beer."
"A lightweight huh?" She smirked.
"Well, at least I'm a cheap date." I chuckle.
She stands up and puts her jacket on. "Well, soldier. I'm off. I gotta be rested up if we're going to nail karver."
I stand too. "Oh..um...ok...do you think...I could, like, call you or something?"
She stands arrogantly. "Why would you want to ruin the good thing we have?"
I didn't know how to respond to that. I just stood there like an idiot.
She smiled. "Bye, Soldier boy." And with that she left me standing there wishing I could grab her and kiss her within an inch of her life.
I'm not sure if I'll be successful, but this girl will be my favorite challenge yet.
MICHAELOk. Can I start by saying, I know I'm being used. At first, I didn't care. I mean, who wouldn't want a hot, bad ass chick coming to you for the occasional hook up. If you're any kind of red blooded male wolf, you'd be crazy to say no.When I met Anna 5 years ago, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. She was sexy as hell, driven and has no problem saying what's on her mind. That in itself, drove me crazy. We agreed to keep it casual. No commitments. Just hook up when the need arises, but walk away when the deed was done. And for years, it worked. But, somewhere along the line, every time I woke up and she was gone. Every time she'd walk away with her 'See ya later, tiger.' My heart dropped. I didn't want her to leave. I want to hold her. Wake her up with kisses. Cook breakfast while I gaze at her in one of my shirts.
MICHAELIt's a little cooler tonight.I breach the treeline. My wolves eyes adjusting to the brightness of the moon. I trot into the clearing. Sniffing the air. I can smell her. I see her. She's shifted. Her naked frame sitting in the grass. Her knee up and her hair hung down in her face.My wolf let's out a tiny whine and licks his lips as the wind blows and I shift. He senses the same thing I do. I rise and walk over to her.I sit down. "Hey."She tosses a glance. "Hey." She goes back to playing with the blade of grass in her hand. With the invisible border between us, I try to see her face. "Anna. Is everything ok?"She blows a breath. "Yeah. I'm good." She doesn't look at me.I grow concerned. "Why are you just sitting here?"She tosses the blade of grass. "Thinking. Taking a bre
RIVER The look in Anna's eyes, as Karver jammed the barrel of his gun into my temple, told me that under her crass, rough exterior, there was a pain she kept well hidden. A wound so deep, you'd think it would impossible to fix. After I went to the hospital, she came by. Lectured me about being stupid and that I shouldn't have put myself in that position. I agree it was dumb, but I couldn't let her face Karver alone. Even as she lectured me, though, I felt she wasn't actually talking to me. It felt like she was talking to someone else. I had to find out who. When I went to her house, I wasn't expecting to have the conversation we had. Karver killed her lover. The same way he was going to kill me. I was shocked, but not surprised. It explained everything I saw in her face that night. After our emotional exchange on the swing, I felt I was delving into the real Anna. The
ANNAI walk into the station. "What's up, bitches?"The last few days have been a Rollercoaster of emotions, but today I decided to just push past and move on.I'm greeted with claps on the back and high fives for nailing Karver.I head for Drake's office. "Bossman. How's it going?" I walk in and sink into a chair at his desk across from him.He raises a brow. "You seem better." He turns to his computer.I adjust my seat. "Yeah. I had a lot of shit to work through, but I think I'm okay now."He folds his hands on his desk. "Anna. I know this Karver take down opened some wounds. We have some great people you can talk to if you need it."I smirk. "I don't need therapy, Drake."He sat back and folded his arms. "Not therapy, Anna. Just someone who can talk with you. In private. Just to make sure you're all sorted.""I'm fin
RIVERI check in with my superior who tells me that I'm to report to the recruitment center.Ok. It's weird, since I'm not a team leader and haven't haven't been involved with training at all.I head to Bartleys office. I knock on the door and wait."Come." I hear from inside.I open the door and step in. "Reporting for duty, sir." I stand at his desk at attention.Bartley smiles and stands. "At ease."I relax."Blake. I'm glad to see you. I didn't think Oakley would hand you over when I put in the request."I looked at him confused. "Request, sir?"He walked over and put a hand on my shoulder. "Son. What you did during the Karver operation was outstanding. Organizing those teams and assisting border to bring this badass down....just what we need down here."I looked at him. "Sir, I'm not sure I understand.
ANNAAfter breakfast, I walk across the barrack yard, heading for the training field.Yesterday, with River, was spectacular to say the least. It was passionate, but urgent at the same time. Like we both just needed it right now, but didn't want to rush past every moment. I've never felt like that before. No. That's a lie. The night with Michael in the clearing felt almost the same, but something was missing. I can't put my finger on it.Which brings me to my dilemma. After I left River, my thoughts drifted to Michael. He confession of love. My feelings for him are still there, even though, there's definitely something between River and I.Then there's this whole security unit thing. River is my superior. And while, I couldn't give a shit, he does. The unit means a lot to him. I don't want my bullshit to screw up his life. So, is what we might have worth
MICHAELCome Sunday morning, I've had a chance to cool off.Yeah, I went off the rails. But, like I said, I'm not going down without a fight.I've believed Anna was mine for five years. Even during her pairing with David. I've tasted her, breathed her in, seen her in my dreams. But she's always just out of reach. Like some wicked game with my heart. I'm not supposed to love her, but I can't help it.I have to win her over.I suppose it's time to have a real conversation. I walk up to her door and knock.A few moments later, she answers. Looking like a total angel in a white sweater and jeans. She leans on her door and crosses her arms. "What are you doing here, Michael?"I put my hand on the frame by her head. "I just want to talk, Ok?"She pushes off the door and goes inside waving me in. I shut the door behind me.We cross the living room in
ANNABeep, beep, beepI open my eye to sunlight pouring in through the windows. My alarm screaming to wake up.I reach over and tap my screen. River squeezes his arm around my waist tighter and growls. After our make up in the rain, we came back to my place and had a night filled with hot, sexy make up sex. But now, it's Monday morning and we have to report back to the unit.I smile and spin around in his arm.His eyes are still closed and he pulls me closer. "Too early." He mumbles.I plant tiny kisses on his nose. "Wake up, sexy." I whisper. "We've got to get to work."He opens his sleepy eye. "No." Closes it and pulls me tighter.I giggle. Giving more small kisses. "Come on. Wake up."He let's out a growl and pulls me on top of him."Screw that. We're staying here all day." He nuzzles my neck, running his fingers up
ANNA I swallow nervously as I look out on the crowd of thousands of heads staring at. Alpha Andrews is at the podium. He's talking about the victory and Torrents demise. Words of encouragement and celebration filled the air on the training field of the Falcon Ridge Security Unit. River is sitting beside me, in a chair on a stage. His fingers laced with mine. Like he can sense my nervousness, he looks to me and gives my hand a squeeze. He smiles warmly when my eyes meet his. I smile back. The ceremony was to honor those that made our victory over the Dragons possible. "Anna Riker. Can you stand over here please?" Alpha Andrews waves me over to him. I stand, straightening my uniform. I walk over and stand at attention facing him. He's holding a box. "For your unmeasured bravery, emmense courage and strength you had to kill the Alpha of Dragons, we would like to present to you the Medal of Honor. Wear it with pride." He takes the medal out of the box and pins it t
ANNA "River. Where are you taking me?" I giggle as he covers my eyes and leads me through the hallways of the pack house. "Almost there." I can tell he's smiling. We stop. He uncovers my eyes. I'm standing in front two large wooden doors. I look at River confused. "Open them." He says quietly. I grasp the doorknobs and swing the large doors open. I gasp. The dome shaped room is covered in soft white candles. The walls are covered from floor to ceiling in books and artifacts. Paintings of past Alphas grace it's walls. Picture windows show the forest outside. On the floor, is a white fur rug in front of a stone fireplace. Wood crackles and burns while flames dance in it. A beautifully set table for two wait with dinner. We just got back from the ball and River set up this surprise. I suck in a
RIVER "To good times and good mates!" Franco raises his glass to the group of men in the common room of the White Rock packhouse. We all clink our glasses and bottles. Blade walks in. He has his black hair pulled back, wearing a black tux. We're all in tuxes. We decided that since the ball is here in White Rock, we'd all get ready here at the packhouse and go to the ball together. Of course, we men are all waiting on the women. Michael comes in. "Looking good, guys." He's smiling in his own tux. His brown hair tossed but nicely done. I crane my neck to look at him behind me, then turn. Eying him up and down. "You clean up nice." I joke. He smirks. "I have my moments. I'm just glad your dad let me go. Though tomorrow I guess I face the music." His smile fades a bit. I put my hand on his shoulder. "I have
ANNAIt's been three days since the news of the ball being moved to White Rock. With most of the moles in Falcon Ridge Prison, we've been free to plan and talk about the battle. There's been a question about why it's taking so long to get a plan from the higher ups.Well, today, we hear it.They have us all outside. Two thousand strong. Even the new recruits are here. What a time to join the unit. It looks like some are now unsure of their decision. I don't blame them. Barely over two weeks into training and you're thrown to war. If we didn't need the bodies, they could sit this one out. There's a stage and a loud speaker set up. The higher ups are standing on the stage. Alpha Edwards and Alpha Eric are missing. I wonder if they were moles too.Alpha Andrews is addressing us."Good morning.&n
RIVER I kiss Anna bye as we separate for the morning. It's Monday, the place is a buzz of the Blue Moon Ball just a week away. I'm internally freaking out as I walk past all the happy faces. The few that know what's going on, shoot me looks as they pass. I cruze through the halls, heading to the trainers office to pick up my week's itinerary, when Zeke rounds the corner almost knocking me on my ass. He looks panicked. I stand. Pretending to look confused, though I know, he's most likely heard about the take down that's already started. "Hey, man." I smile. This time it's almost a smile filled with satisfaction to see him so scared. "What's up?" He looks around. "Uh, nothing. I...uh...have to go." He pushes past me and I grab his arm. "Why the hurry? What's going on?" I stare him down. He looks at my hand on his arm and shrugs it off.
MICHAEL"What time is it?" I send out a mindlink.I'm pacing back and forth across a dark alley way. The same alley way, Adrian threatened Anna in.I run my fingers through my hair with one hand while nervously shaking out the other as I walk.Anna answers. She's up the street, in an alley."It's only a few minutes since the last time you asked, Michael."River jumps in. He's in an alley across the street."Mike, stop fucking pacing."I shake my head."He's late. I don't like it. This doesn't feel right..."Anna links again."Michael relax.""Relax." I chuckle to myself. "The guys a raging lunatic and they want me to relax."River links."You didn't have a problem with him when you sold us out?""River!!" Anna scolds."That was different." I link"How? How was it different?" Ri
RIVER The shitshow of the last weekend has me on edge. Everyone's suspect. I'm trying so hard to hide it, but as I walk through the halls of the dorms, I can't help but question everyone I pass. Everyone's Dragon. I have to get it together. It doesn't help that I'm terrified that Anna has to be out of my sight for even a minute. My wolf hates the idea. He's been scrambling around in his cage since I dropped her off at her door. These next few weeks are going to be torture. Especially, where Zeke's involved. I just can't believe it. Zeke and me are best friends. We practically grew up together. I thought I knew everything about the guy. Turns out he's a fucking Dragon or at least a sell out. How can I be normal? How can I not lose my shit when he's around Anna? Throwing her that fake ass smile.
MICHAELI'm sweating fucking bullets. My hands are clammy. My mouth is dry.I can hear the voices inside. One's River's and one is deep, low, and downright scary. They're arguing about me.From the sounds of it, Alpha Blake wants to kill me right now. I don't blame him. If I wasn't such a coward, I probably would have done it myself. I'm the worst possible monster the shifter world could ever have. I sentenced my own people to death just to get laid. What kind if sick fuck does that? Me, that's who.I just hope I'll get the chance to make it right before they kill me. I need to make this right. Not for me. I'm not trying to clear my conscience, but for my people. For Anna and River. I need to save them before it's too late.As I'm led into the office, I'm met with cold, dark eyes. The guy looks like River, but he's fucking m
ANNAI run into the packhouse. Shaken, breathless"River!" I yell as I run up the stairs."River!!" I yell again. He pops out of the bedroom door. I skid to a stop. My eyes are full of fear. My breathing is fast. His face is full of confusion and concern. "Anna, what's wrong?""It's Michael. He's in trouble." I grab his arm.River ran his fingers through his hair. "Damn it, Anna. Did you go see him after I explicitly told you not to?"I shook my head. Swallowing trying to calm my breathing. "No. He came to me.""What?!" River's eyes changed to rage. "Did he hurt you? What did he do, Anna?!" He grabbed my arms, looking me over."No! River, he didn't touch me. Will you just listen?!" I shrugged his arms off.I told him everything Michael told me."He was t
