Chapter 5

Driving into Colorado made Abey's heart skip a beat, she knew that was a sign this state is where they must settle. “I think we're safe here,” Abey whispered.

Gabriela rubbed her eyes, she wasn't ready to stop their road trip, but she wanted to start somewhere new. “Colorado? This state doesn't seem so bad,” she said smiling at the beauty of dead grass and not much else.

Turning into a leasing office for apartments, Gabriela followed Abey into the building.                “Welcome, how can I help you?” the lady behind the desk said smiling.

“We're new in town, and we need an apartment for maybe six or so months, I have a new job starting here next month and figured we'd come out here early,” Abey said smiling.

“             Ah well fill out this paperwork, and we'll see what comes up on your credit, and then I'll show you around and get you settled into your new apartment.” she half-smiled looking at the girls like they were from somewhere else. “So where'd you guys come from?”

           “Cali.” Gabriela quietly said.

“Ah I'm from up the coast.” she half-smiled watching Abey work on the paperwork. “So what do you guys do?”

“Demon hunters.” Abey hissed. “Housing mainly,” she said looking back down at the last bit of information. “Done, here you go.”

“Alright, give me about an hour, there's a nice restaurant if you're hungry down the block.” she half-smiled looking down at the paperwork.

“Thanks,” Abey said, motioning for Gabriela to follow.

Gabriela caught up with Abey, “why'd you tell her we were demon hunters?” she hissed. “She looked at you like you were crazy.”

“Maybe because I am,” Abey growled. “Get in the car, we're going to get something to eat, I'm sure she'll be a while.” Abey started the car and drove the few blocks to a known restaurant.

Gabriela and Abey found a booth in the back of the restaurant, an older lady, with dark curls, slowly walked over to the girls. “Good evening, I'm Martha. What can I start for drinks?” she glanced at both of them.

         “Coke.”

         “Me too.” Gabriela chimed in.

“Alright, have a look at our menu, I'll be back in a moment to take your orders,” she said handing the girls their menus.

“So this is home then?” Gabriela whispered in her menu.

Abey looked around the restaurant, “I got a feeling about this place, I think we're supposed to stay here until we get some kind of sign or dream.” she said shrugging her shoulder.

“Alright what can I get you?” Martha said setting the drinks down in front of the girls.

“Cheeseburger and fries.” Abey said handing her menu back to Martha.

           “Me too.”

“So what are we going to do? Wait until something happens again?” Gabriela asked hoping to get some kind of real answer, she wanted to keep driving, she didn't feel at home here.

“My Grandfather told me to go East. I would feel when I am where I'm supposed to be.             Look Gabby, I doubt this is our final destination, I feel we have more than one road to travel.” Abey said biting into her burger. “Besides I feel like New York or somewhere over there is where all this goes down. We need to figure out how to defend ourselves before we involve our self into anything crazy.”

The girls finished their dinners, the lady behind the desk stood outside, she half-smiled when the girls got out. “So I have some good news, your background checked out and we have a furnished apartment ready to go for you.”

Abey half smiled, “great, so we can go to bed now?”

“Of course, you guys must be exhausted if you drove from Cali,” she said handing Abey the keys. “It's the second door on the right, I'm three doors down from you if there are problems with the apartment,” she said waving the girls on.

Walking to the apartment, Abey felt like she was being watched. Quickly glancing at the surrounding areas, she wasn’t sure who it was but the feeling faded a little. Glancing around one more time before she closed the door.

“What's going on?” Gabriela asked setting her bag on the bed.

“I felt something, kind of like the feeling last night, only this time it felt different, maybe friendly,” Abey said shaking her head. “I'm going crazy, or it's getting close for us to meet our destiny hands down.”

“I think we're going to be meeting our protectors soon, or at least know how to find them.” Gabriela put her stuff down near the front door.

“Look Gabby, we cant be doing magic or anything like that. We cannot afford to let Dremis find us again, I have a feeling it's going to be bad news if he finds us again.” Abey said sitting down near the window. “Besides take this time to find yourself, you will be able to defeat your fears of the dark,” she said without looking at her friend.

“I know, and the dark doesn't scare me as much as it used to, I'm battling it now,” she said crossing her arms. “Besides what are some of your fears.”

Abey closed her eyes for a moment. She knew her fears involved losing her best friend, but if  Gabby didn't know her fear, no one else would. “I don’t have any kind of fears, I'm okay with what happens now.” she lied, but she couldn’t tell the truth. Opening her eyes, she felt at peace with herself for a moment.

“Lies, you were always a bad liar Abey.” Gabriela mocked her. “I'm going to check out my room and might take a bath,” she said disappearing down the hallway.

Tomorrow the girls would go search around to see if this place had any kind of help. Another Coven would be out of the question, in fact seeking human help was out. Abey walked to her room and sat on the bed for a moment. She'd left Cali with only a few things, Gabriela left with even less.

Lost in her thoughts, Abey wanted nothing more than something normal to come out of this. Gabriela stood near the hallway. “Are we safe Abey? I mean we can put protection spells up. I don’t see the harm in that?”

Abey looked over at her, “no magic, we can't take chances like that. We're safe here.” she said looking back out the window.

“If we're soo safe, why haven't you moved from that window? Why haven’t you eaten anything?” Gabriela challenged.

“Going by someone's words we're safe, I don't think so.” she snapped at Gabriela. Abey wanted Gabriela scared so she wouldn't try and do any magic, Abey needed help but she didn’t know where to go for answers. “Maybe we should seek some answers, maybe a local coven can help us?” Gabriela suggested.

“I told you no human help, we have to wait until we get another sign,” Abey said walking towards Gabriela. “I'm going to order Chinese you want some?”

         “Yeah.”

Abey ordered the Chinese, Gabriela sat on the floor with her tarot cards, that magic no one can control, only she could. Closing her eyes, she laid the cards down without opening her eyes. “I feel we're safe here.” she said opening her eyes, “these three cards will help us in the next six months, she said turning over each card.

Abey stood nearby, she felt uneasy about the cards, something about them said they could bring danger if they weren't careful. “Be careful what you ask of those, I feel some answers have left a mystery,” she said walking to the door as the delivery man walked up.

Abey froze when the delivery guy handed her the bag. “Daniel? How?” she said backing up.

Daniel followed her lead, Gabriela stood up. “I followed you, I've been tracking you since you left Cali. I told you, you were in danger. The Coven wants you to come back, they feel they could protect you there.”

“We can't go back,” Gabriela growled, wanting to attack him. “How do we know you're not working with Dremis!”

Daniel crossed his arms, “because if I remember right you dreamt of four protectors correct? Well you are wrong on the number, there are five of us.” he said looking at Gabriela.

“No, I dreamt of four, if you say there are five of you, then one of you will die as I dreamt as well.” she challenged back.

“Well I am one of the four, so you can relax your stare,” Daniel said lowering his voice. “Now I suspect you two are hungry, so eat up and we'll figure this out,” he said motioning for the girls to sit and eat.

The girls joined him at the table, Abey felt better knowing Daniel was there. She was worried that he would be the one that was killed because of her. Dremis threatened his life before, he would probably do it again, if Dremis found out that Daniel was helping the girls.

“You do realize, this is getting dangerous?” Daniel said chewing on some of his food.

“Um yeah, that is why we ran,” Gabriela spoke before Abey could. She could see Abey was a little concerned about talking about this. “Look, Daniel, we can do this alone now, you should leave before you get hurt.”

“Oh I don’t think so, you see this war started because of the two of you, not saying it is your fault. But your destinies have a part in this whole thing,” he said biting down again.

“Ehhh, I don’t think so,” Abey said getting up from the table. “I'd leave if I were you, Daniel, this isn't about Warlocks, this is Demons,” Abey said before walking out of the apartment.

She wanted to be alone, but she wanted Daniel to come and save her. She didn’t want to lose him too. Abey walked down the road towards darkness, turning onto a path, she sat down on the bench.

Looking up at the sky, “I thought you were going to help me Grandpa?” she whined.

“He is helping you,” Daniel said walking towards here. “Why do you think I am here. We were summoned by your Grandfather long before you were born,” he said sitting down next to Abey.

“I don’t understand?” Abey said confused.

“You see your destiny has been foretold for close to 5,000 years,” Daniel said looking at the stars. “Look I have a lot to teach you and Gabriela, but I need you to trust me.”

Abey held her breath for a good minute, she wasn’t sure what Daniel was trying to tell her, she was afraid to find out more. “What are you talking about? I'm seventeen?” she growled.

“Your body is seventeen, your soul is older,” he said glancing in her direction. “What's coming for you is powerful. It could end or begin this world over. I am from an Ancient Civilization.” he stopped for a moment, “and so are you.”
