The second she turned around and saw us her eyes went wide. She looked nervous, her eyes darted around the castle grounds almost like she was looking for an escape route. She doesn’t take her eyes off Jan while she gets some clothes on. And like the arse Jan is THAT is when he decides to give me back control and shifts back into our human form.
“Any particular reason you followed me ALPHA?!”
“Um, well, I was really... just... kinda hoping that I might be able to persuade you to let me take you out for dinner?”
I almost screamed at her. What the hell is wrong with me? I have NEVER had that much issue trying to talk to a woman before!
“Not too sure what you don’t get about ‘there’s no future for us’, do I need to use smaller words?”
'Ooof our mate is feisty! I LOVE IT!'
'You are NOT helping Jan, and thanks for dropping the ball on her NOT catching us being a creeper!'
Alaina starts to walk away, further into the forest. At least she's still in her human form, I can talk to her like this
'and fack it all up more.'
'Janus, come on man you’re supposed to be on MY side! Stop being a douchecanoe!'
'Don’t fack this up and we can talk about the canoeing.'
'Janus... it’s not... never mind.'
Somedays I wonder if he pays attention to anything that’s going on when I’m in control.
SHAT I basically need to run to catch up to Alaina. She can’t be more than 5’5” and, yet, at 6’5” I am having to run to catch up to her little legs!
“Alaina, PLEASE, wait, or at least slow down, so we can talk.” I plead as I catch up with her.
“What is your major malfunction? Stop being a git and shut up, just bugger off and leave me alone!”
“Please, I am begging, one dinner, or a walk, or sitting on the river bank, SOMETHING! Just give me a couple of hours to get to know you. I am not going to try and whisk you away without you accepting the bond, don’t get me wrong Janus and I want to but, I won't do anything you don’t want me to.”
“Funny, I don’t want you following me, or bothering me, and yet here you are doing both. So, you were saying?” She bellowed, as she breaks into a sprint.
“Alaina, I am trying. I am not sure what I did but I just want a chance...” I call after her, as I slow down, “please” I almost whisper
As I shove my hands in my pockets, kick the dirt, and turn around to walk away, head hung VERY low. How had this gone so wrong so fast?
'I don’t know what to do now Jan. We’ve got 11 more days here, and I have a feeling that if we keep trying this way it may end up with her actually rejecting us.'
'Ash, I don’t have anything man. I don’t think that there is an answer for Alaina! When Callum said strong willed, he wasn’t kidding, I don’t think we have ever met anyone quite like her! And what Callum said about Tyche being reasonable?! If THAT’S reasonable... shat I don’t want to know what unreasonable is!'
'What do you mean? Did you two talk? What happened?'
'Basically, the same thing as you, only I was told that, in no uncertain terms, if we continued, she would eat something that we hold very dear...'
I could feel him tucking his tail between his legs in the back of my mind, and he let out a not so quiet whimper! I come to a very abrupt stop, and I know there’s a look of shock and disbelief on my face. I am sure that if anyone else was around they would be concerned that something horrible happened. Really, what’s worse than your mate threatening to eat parts of you that you kinda need?!
'Wait, did she threaten to... no... she didn’t... did she really threaten to eat our dingle berries?!?!?!?!'
'See what I mean? If THAT is reasonable, I don’t want to see what unreasonable is!'
'I don’t blame you man, that’s some crazy shat right there!'
I continue to walk back to the castle when I get a feeling as though I’m not alone, and I’m not talking about Janus. Looking around I don’t see anyone, I can’t smell anyone –or anything out of the ordinary-, but I am extremely unsettled with the feeling of being watched. As I round the corner of the castle towards the driveway, I get bombarded by the last person I want to see.
“Ooooooo ASHY!!!!!!”
'Oh, for fack off! Why Ash, I’ve always told you ‘keep your dingle out of crazy’ and what did you go do? You didn’t stick it into crazy... YOU WENT AND STUCK IT INTO PSYCHOTIC! WHY?!'
'I don’t know, I honestly don’t! She is most definitely my biggest mistake AND biggest regret, I don’t think anything could top the mistake that is Gray!'
“Gray, it is Alpha... Alpha Ashton... h3ll I’d settle for and Alpha Ash for fack sakes! I am, however, NOT Ashy, or any other annoying nickname you have unilaterally decided to give me!”
“Oh, come on, is that really how you are going to greet me? I flew all the way out here just for...”
“No one asked you to come here, no one even hinted that you were wanted on this trip, so if you try and say it was for me you can shove it! You didn’t come here for me, you came here in hopes I wouldn’t find my mate and, you might be able to wear me down enough that you might have the chance get the status and title of Queen. Sorry to burst your bubble Gray, I‘ve met my mate, I would NEVER have had you as my Queen anyways, and I really don’t want you here, so you can go home now!”
I stopped and turned to her.
“I have always been upfront with you about our ‘relationship’,” I do those air quote things “if that is what you want to call what happened, and the fact I would NEVER go past that. So why do you insist to annoy, and piss me off, doing this shat? If anything, it makes me want you even less! You should probably stop while you are a head, and before I ban you from my territory. You may not be part of my pack but that just makes it easier for me to boot you!”
I turn back to the castle door, make my way up the stairs, and do my best to slam the, very old, solid, and VERY heavy door. It didn’t have the desired effect, and it shut so slowly there was barely an audible click when it finally did shut. At least I was safe in here from her!
'If she kept her mouth open any longer, she would have ended up with a hornets nest in there! I wonder if she’s still standing there, mouth agape?'
'I really don’t give a shat Jan, seriously, not one fack given when it comes to Gray!'
I walk, as quickly as possible, up to my room. It would have been so much nicer, and possibly easier, if Alpha Rodrigo had just held the meeting here and not in the convention hall, there would have been more time to spend getting to know the other Alphas, and possibly Alaina. At the risk of sounding like a bigger creeper than I already am, thanks Jan, I could have potentially planned out ‘accidentally’ bumping into her between meetings now we are in one big hall and just bounce around. Alaina doesn’t move from her table, ever. Oh well, ce la vie! Time to think of things to at least pique her interest enough to want to go to dinner with me.
Alaina POV I slowly make my way back to my room in the castle. So many stairs! Fourth floor, who has a fourth floor without an elevator?! I was given a room in a tower, makes me feel like a real princess, but sweet baby goddess the stairs! I could NOT live in a building, castle or no, with this many stairs! 'He followed me! I can’t believe he followed me, Ty! So now we have a stalker to worry about?' 'I don’t think he’s dangerous, just a pestering doofus!' 'I don’t really care if he’s dangerous, I know you can take care of us both, I don’t want to deal with this idiot for the next 11 days!' 'I don’t think we can hide from him, not here at least. Maybe we should just appease him an...' 'APPEASE HIM?! Appease him? Did you hit your head, Ty?! There is no way in bloody h3ll I am going to do ANYTHING to ‘appease’ him! How the fack did you even think that I would go along with that plan? Why would you even suggest such a ridiculous idea?' 'I don’t
Ashton POV I have absolutely no interest in being here anymore. These meetings are pointless as I can’t think about anything other than Alaina, and Janus isn’t doing much better with keeping his mind off Tyche! I am currently in a meeting with the North American packs, trying to sort out alliances, and trade partners. For the most part the packs in North America own their own companies. Pack members generally work for them, but we often have humans working alongside us. These companies are what pay our bills, buy us food, and give the pack members their own money. My pack also lives in a very fertile are of the country, so we have acres of gardens, and greenhouses as our growing season is a little shorter than we need. Alpha Johnson, from Blue River pack in St. Bruno, wants to open trade negotiations with me regarding our produce. Currently we sell the extras at a farmers market, it makes a decent profit, but we could get more from selling to another pack. It would also help the lo
Alaina POV He’s laughing about me punching another Alpha. He's impressed that I stood up for myself? I must be in the twilight zone because this is not how an Alpha acts. I should be getting read the riot act, not being praised and having him laugh at me punching someone. ‘Lunas are quiet, demure, an air of fragility’ is what I grew up being taught, and Alpha Lupin seems to like that I’m not those things. 'Ty, can you get a read on them? Is his Lycan saying anything?' 'If he was in control we would be mated right now, he thought what you did was the hottest thing he has ever seen. I am not sure how Alpha Lupin is able to keep control over Janus right now!' 'Holy shat, who is he? What do you think of them now?' 'I think that you should at least talk to him. Sit in the garden, or the dining hall, you don’t have to be alone, but talk to him!' Maybe Ty is right. He hasn’t really done anything that most of the Alphas would do. Most would have shoved me up to
Ashton POV I head back to my room, happier than I have been in a long time. Actually, I don’t even remember being this happy before! 'I can’t believe you were able to get her to suggest a walk!' 'I know! I’m not too sure what changed her mind but I am not going to complain! We have 10 more days to try and win her over, I don’t know if that is enough though.' 'All you can do is your best. As long as she doesn’t outright reject us, we should be ok, at least then we have a chance!' 'Keep your paws crossed man, all of them, because I have a feeling that this is going to be one h3ll of a fight!' 'Yeah, but it’s going to be totally worth it!' 'I sure hope so. I hope that we can both find happiness within each other!' 'Why wouldn’t you?' 'She is really adverse on having a mate, at least not an alpha mate, I don’t know if she would even allow herself to be happy with us.' I can feel Jan thinking about what I just said as I walk int
Alaina POV Someone slipped a note under my door last night with the exact rule that I needed to ensure I can compete this week. They also pointed out that nowhere in the rule book does it state gender, so it should never have been an issue to begin with, but I have a feeling that this will all change very quickly! This will likely be the first and last time a woman is allowed to compete, even if she did have to fight for it! The thing that caught me off guard the most was that whoever left the note, they also put my name on the registration list. I have a feeling that it might be Ashton, which makes me confused. How would he even know, for starters, and why would he be onboard with this? As I am standing in line waiting to find out who I am up against first I hear all the other Alphas whispering. The looks on their faces when I came walking down the hall to line up was priceless though, even Ty was rolling in fits of laughter! As I am leaning against the wall, I can hear yelling.
Ashton POV 'Jan, you’re going to piss them both off!' I couldn’t help but howl in laughter watching Tyche through Jan’s eyes. Confused doesn’t even come close to the look on her face. Wait... Tyche’s eyes... they are purple! 'JAN! What’s with Ty’s eyes?' 'No clue. That would be a good question for an elder or the council.' 'Yeah, yo, by the sounds of it we should get this fight into gear. I think the council is planning on coming down here to detain Ty!' 'Oh, hells no they aren’t! You want a fight that will keep them away? We will show them something spectacular!' 'Don’t go and show off dude, just please, be normal?!' Jan watches Ty for a few more seconds, slowly rolling back over. It seems like her guard is down, so he pushes his back legs out, hoping to slide enough to get under her belly. All he managed to do was give us some awful hay burn and show Ty that we are done playing. Ty pounces on Jan’s back, pulling on his left ear. Jan stands
Alaina POV I quickly shower and get dressed. The sooner we get this over with the better! I make my way down to Ashton’s room. He’s on the same floor but over near the stairs, bloody stairs, I wonder if he will carry me down, I giggle to myself. Walking up to his door I can hear him pacing, I can see his shadow come and go under the door, and I can hear something else... voices... or at least A voice, maybe he’s on the phone? 'He better not be on the phone with another woman!' 'Ty, we are going home to Fin. It’s not our place to get pissy if he’s talking to another woman!' With that Tyche put a block up, she is beyond furious with me. 'That should tell you that you are doing something wrong! As long as you keep doing this, you and I will not have a very good relationship! You aren’t just keeping yourself from being happy with your mate, you are FORCING me to be miserable without mine! YOUR FAULT!' And back behind the block before I can say anything else, but she
Ashton POV Pups. She wanted to get away from me so badly that she was willing to give up her ability to have pups! I had to use the Alpha tone, I couldn’t have anyone coming back and trying to talk to me about it. I couldn't have HER try and talk to me about it in the future. I worded it very carefully, and I hope no one figures out the very obvious loophole! They couldn’t talk about what went on in that particular room, with anyone who did not already know what was going on, or themselves. Since they don’t really know who all knows, it will be difficult to talk about it with anyone. But that means that Alaina could talk to Cal, since he wasn’t in the library and, already knows most of what has gone on. As the council rules over prophecies, they can still talk about any other part of it, I just hope they take what I said at face value, and don’t go investigating. Last thing I really want is for them to call Sade’s and start questioning her. I know that she will say whatever she needs
Ash POV “I’m not sure that the use of the cameras, in the direction of where the actual tribe lives, is a good idea, what can we do to prevent that?” I ask Dan as the phone rings. “Hello?” “Ash, ‘ol buddy, ‘ol pal.” “Uhhh… yes?” “Shane, from Winslow pack in Dundurn.” “Oh, hey! I didn’t recognize your voice!” “I need to know when everyone is being sent to Tsuut'ina pack so I can get some produce and meat shipped over.” “OH!!! I still need to talk to the tribal chief, but I am working with my head of security to come up with a system that wont be overly invasive, and will be easily removed, before I call her.” “Ok, give me a call when you’ve figured that out and we will get a couple truck sent out there.” “Thanks Shane!” I barely hang up the phone before it rings again. “Hello?” “Ashton, I have been waiting f
Ash POV “Well, I guess we have some work to get done.” Scott nods at me. I can see the repugnance on his face. I’m not sure if it’s with himself, me, or the situation in general, but I have a feeling our friendship will never be the same. My relationship with all of the Alphas will have changed by the end of this. I don’t know if we should take up the kingship after dad steps down. I don’t know if I should be an Alpha anymore. “I know what’s going through your head Ash,” Scott says as he places his hand on my shoulder. “We are still good. This is not your fault; you’ve just been dealt a REALLY shit.ty hand!” I nod, not fully believing him. I mean, yeah, the entire situation is completely, and totally, fu.cked up. It’s been reiterated, I don’t know how many times now but, no one could have predicted this. Even if everyone took the ‘bedtime story’ of Selene’s reincarnation as truth… no one could have thought that there would be someone this
Ash POV Within 25 hours of my call with dad we are all on Skype with the various Alphas, and royal families. There are a handful that had to do a phone call, due to fight issues, or their location not allowing them to get places fast enough, but the bulk of them have made it to this call. The Canadians have all amassed at Blue River, St. Bruno, as that was the best place for flights, with the exception of Scott and I, since that as.shole Kushim is currently in our vicinity and actively attacking. Scott did make his way down to my office, to try to eliminate the number of open windows in the chat as much as possible, but we both know he may need to leave in a rush. The pictures are small, but it will work. I notice that as each location speaks their picture lights up with a little ring around it. Well, that makes things a lot easier! “I have called you all to this meeting to talk about the rogue problem and the prophecy of a mad man.” I watch a closely and everyone see
Ash POV I make a slow walk back to the pack house, with Clara draped in my arms, holding her tight. By the time I get back to town she has no colour left in her face, as hard as I try to keep her head to my chest it flops around as I walkAs I pass by pack members I can hear the gasps, see them cover their mouths in shock, and hear the murmurs about what could have happened. The tears fall down my face, and I don’t even try to hide them. The time of being ‘the big tough Alpha’ is over. I can’t pretend like it didn’t happen, I can’t pretend like these things no longer affect me, the truth… the truth is that this is breaking me. It started out slowly, and I don’t even know when it got to this point, but, if I am being honest with myself, I am becoming a broken man. I will always do everything I can to protect Alaina, I will do everything I can to protect my pack… all of the packs… but I don’t know how much longer I can keep it together enough to do it effectively. I have made so many mi
Ash POV Scott agreed to help call some of the Alphas, Cal and Alex have split a bunch amongst themselves and I got Yu and… Kendrick. I sit at my desk, head in my hands, wondering just how I am going to do this. After Alaina took Kendrick down at the Alpha meeting a few years ago I’m not sure he will be willing to help, at least not if its to help her, and Yu… I never did get a read on how he took Alaina yelling at him. I DO know that if they are in the same room together she will likely want to beat the ever-loving sh.it out of him. Fu.ck, having a strong minded, out spoken, and full of… having Alaina as a mate is definitely challenging at the moment! Not many Alphas appreciate Lunas being like Alaina. They want a quiet, subservient, Luna that has no real mind of her own. Alaina caused a lot of waves in Spain and I don’t think anyone has forgotten. ‘That being said… they do still want to be on the royal families good side!’ ‘Good point… I don’t know if t
Ash POV Walking back into my office Alex, and Austin, are waiting, looking at a map sprawled out across my desk. “What’s going on?” Alex looks up at me, then back to the map, before pointing to the eastern border. “They came in from the East this time. Our patrols were able to get to them before they really got into the territory, but we weren’t expecting it.” “What’s with the one that was caught?” Alex gives a little chuckle, turning and, half sitting on my desk. “Yeah… ‘caught’” He air quotes, chortling a little harder, with Cal and Austin quickly joining him. I raise an eyebrow and look at each of them waiting for someone to explain. “She never shifted, the second she saw our warriors she kneeled, hands on top of her head, and didn’t move, or say anything, until after the fight was over. Whe-” “How was she not brought into the fight?” “She stayed back, a good thirty feet, whi
Ash POV I hold Alaina as she sleeps, and my mind wanders to her reaction to all of this. 'I don’t get it, why would she think we would be mad at her?' I can hear his pain, the same pain that I am feeling. 'I have no answer, man, no answer at all.' The door opens and the doctor sneaks in, giving me a slight nod before grabbing Alaina’s chart from the wall. He nods his head to the hallway, wanting to talk to me, but when I look at Alaina, seeing how peaceful she finally looks, I shake my head. He peers over my body to see her curled around me and nods in understanding. “I’m glad to see she’s finally sleeping, without medication.” I nod, in agreement, as he checks her vitals. “I have a question.” I say, trying to keep my chest from vibrating against her head. He nods, and places her chart back on the wall, before coming next to the bed. “She is beating herself up about losing the pups. Fuck she thought I would
***TW Pregnancy loss and thoughts of self-harm. This one was hard for me to write, as I have had a miscarriage. That being said… Alaina’s side needs to be told. While everyone’s thoughts, and experiences, are different, in tumultuous times, I pulled on parts of my own thoughts, and experiences, for this.*** Alaina POV “I’m sorry Luna, we are limited on options…” “We need to make a decision…” “We don’t have much time…” “Do you want us to call Alpha lupin?...” “Luna?...” “Doctor she’s not responding…” There’s a light flashed in my eyes, I can feel hands on my shoulders, laying me down, pretty sure there’s an IV being placed. “Alaina, I’m so sorry, I called Ash and he’s on his way here.” I look up at him, and I can see the pity written across his face. “I understand how you feel Al-“ Bul.lshit he understands! I haven’t heard from Ty since the doctor gave us the news. That being said, I don’t know what either one of us would say to the other.
As the stapler flies apart my phone starts ringing again and Dan quickly glances at the number on the screen then tosses it to me. Looking I see the number for Wild Rose flit across the screen. “Scott?” “I’m sorry Ash, I need you to get out here like yesterday.” I start running out the door towards the garage. “What happened?” “Alaina had an ultrasound…” His pause stops my heart, and my feet. “SCOTT!” “I’m sorry Ash… it’s the pups.” I start running full tilt. “I don’t know much just that there is an issue and she might loose one… some… I don’t know.” “I’m going to run.” I say as I toss my phone and shift mid step. 'We never should have left her there! She should have been with us!' 'Arguing about it now isn’t going to change anything, but we both know that, with what we knew it was the safest place.' 'And now?'
