I don't know how in such a quick time Bryce immediately got in front of me and immediately caught the blow that I was supposed to get from the furious man. As far as I remember, he wasn't with Braylon when they came to us, but he was here and Braylon came before them to help me.
"Let go of me and don't interfere!" That terrifying voice of Alvin echoed throughout the place, causing Mam Elishea to feel so scared that her hands that were holding me trembled. I looked at her and it was obvious that she was very scared and that she was traumatized because of the behavior and actions of her husband.
I was just about to turn my eyes to Alvin and Bryce when suddenly Alvin pulled Mam Elishea with one of his hands and because the lady was clinging to me, I was immediately taken by surprise.
"Oh! My! Gosh! What is going on?”
"Who asked Alvin to drink again?"
"They know that's how he is when he drinks, eh."
"I did see Alvin drinking with Kevin when I passed by Jayson's house."
"Oh! My! Gosh! Why do they still invite him, eh, they know Alvin looks like being possessed by a demon when he drinks like that."
"Come on! Nurse Gia fell!”
"Gia!" Worry broke out in Dra. McKenna's voice when I heard her call me.
"Nurse Gia!" I also heard the concern in Mam Elishea's voice when she saw me fall and after my side waist easily hit the end of the table.
I couldn't help but feel the pain but I didn't make a sound. I immediately stood up before Mam Elishea even approached me while Dra. McKenna, on the other hand, could not get close due to the sudden fall of Alvin, causing our attention to go to him again.
"I don't tolerate that kind of attitude on my island." It was just that the breeze accompanied the emphasis and coldness of Bryce's words to Alvin that now the corner of his lip was bleeding.
"A-Are you all right, Nurse Gia?" My attention turned to Mam Elishea when she suddenly asked me at the same time as she squeezed my arm a little to make sure she got my attention.
I smiled bitterly at the lady. "I'm fine, Mam. I should be asking you that because that's my job."
There was a trace of shame on her face, causing her to bend down and not be able to look straight into my eyes. "I'm sorry i-if you got hurt because of my husband and because of our p-problem..."
I smiled bitterly and then gently squeezed the lady's hand to convey to her that she should not worry. "I wanted to intervene because there is a law that no one should hurt a woman even if they say you are married."
I didn't hear her answer but I saw her nod saying that what I said was right as her tears started to fall again. I was helping her to walk to the nearest seat but while walking I immediately felt pain in my side. Looks like it will bruise.
"You shouldn't have interrupted.." Even though he was drunk, Alvin still managed to say while pointing at Bryce when I looked at them again. It was just a whisper but because of the silence caused by everyone's surprise, I heard it.
"I don't want even a little blood to be spilled on my island from someone like him. Treat him and make sure that I won't see that face scattered on my island again." Bryce ordered coldly and emphatically again causing the people to immediately move after a few seconds of shock.
"Mam Elishea, come with us there first so we can treat your wounds." A male nurse asked Mam to go to the tent sent by Grandma Briella, where I would have taken her earlier if her husband had not come and made such a scene.
Even though Mam Elishea was weak, she tried to stand up, but before they could take a step, another nurse came and brought a wheelchair, so we immediately helped the lady to sit there and take her to the tent.
"You, Nurse Gia? Are you all right?" My attention turned to Nurse Ishi when she suddenly asked me because she must have noticed my grip on my side that was too easy earlier.
I smiled at her. "I'm fine, Nurse Ishi. I'll take care of myself."
She only nodded and then went after the other nurse that's taking care of Mam Elishea. I winced when I felt the pain in my side but immediately lost my attention when I felt the familiar eyes watching me again. I just sighed because I know the owner of those eyes again.
"Gia!" I turned to the place where that familiar voice of Dra. McKenna. She was about to approach me at that time when suddenly a nurse stopped her and it was obvious that what the nurse had to say was important so she immediately stopped and looked at it. She can't postpone that so I saw with concern when she turned to me again and our eyes met.
I looked away and started to turn away from her. "Gia!" I heard her calling again but she can't postpone her work because she was there to help the people here I understand that because that's what I came here for and I can heal my wound by myself as well. If only when I was younger I would have cried and passed out just so she would notice me but now it's different. I don't need her to put me first because even I understand that the profession we chose is the sacrifice of time for our own family. It's just that she seems to have gotten used to it so much that the day came when she completely forgot about me. She is the same as Daddy.
"Nurse Gia." I stopped walking and immediately looked up from my crouching because of deep thought and then five young people who were probably still in high school appeared at me.
"Why? Are you going to have someone check-up?” I asked and then they smiled although that also ended up in a grimace due to the sudden pain in my side again. I only held on to it because somehow it lessened the pain that seemed to be noticed by those in front of me and they looked at it at the same time.
"We saw your downfall earlier," said a man who was the tallest among them. “Oh. I'm Joseph, by the way," he introduced himself when he realized he hadn't introduced himself yet.
"I'm James. Joseph and I are brothers." The guy who's the next one that's tall among them said. "Are you all right? - Ouch!”
James turned a bad look at the woman on his right side when she suddenly shot him. I couldn't help but laugh because of that. "You saw Nurse Gia fall earlier and you even managed to ask if she was okay. Isn't it obvious that she's not okay?” The girl's blunt said to him caused James to scratch the back of his neck. "A-Ah, I'm Lyra, Nurse Gia," she introduced as her attention turned to me again.
"Your side will have a bruise based on the impact of your fall earlier." I turned to another woman who was next to Joseph on his left side. She carefully observed me clinging to my side causing me to smile because she was so observant. When she felt that I was looking at her, she immediately looked up at me and was embarrassed because of the sudden reddening of her face. "I-I'm R-Roseanne."
"I'm Ayesha!" The five of us looked at the other woman with us who was happy because of the tone of her voice. "Our house is close to here and you can stay there so you can see the situation on your side," she said and because I also want to see what was the case on my side, I nodded, and then she led the way.
Their house is not that big and it's made of wood but I'm not very sensitive about places because honestly I also prefer this simple house. After all, when it's too big I might not see the people living with me so often. We might have a sudden play of hide and seek because of how big the house is.
"The bathroom is here, Nurse Gia." Ayesha gave me directions when we entered their house.
I smiled at her. "Thank you, Ayesha."
She nodded in response and then walked away. When I entered the bathroom, there was a mirror on the side that wasn't that big but it was enough for me to see half of my body. I closed the door and then properly faced the mirror and lifted my uniform and Roseanne was right because it was bruised.
"Nurse Gia?" I immediately turned to the door when I heard Roseanne's voice from the other side of it.
I fix my top uniform and then opened the door. "Here it is." I looked when Roseanne showed me a small tube and based on what I looked at it was some kind of ointment that was obviously from another country because of the writing on it that I couldn't understand. "It's an ointment that my father brought home from there to my aunt on the other island who had just returned from abroad. She gave it to Dad because my youngest brother always gets bruises because of being naughty. That's effective." She said and then smiled at me.
"Thank you, Roseanne." I thanked her and then smiled back.
"All right. We'll just wait for you in the living room." She said and then turned her back on me and walked away.
I closed the door again and then looked again at my bruise. I didn't have any injuries, but it was a pretty big bruise. I just opened the ointment Roseanne gave me and then rubbed it on my bruise.
"Nurse Gia is still in the bathroom." I turned to the door when I heard James' voice.
"Where's the bathroom?"
My forehead furrowed when I heard that familiar voice. I immediately fix my clothes and then closed the tube. I looked at my face in the mirror and saw my sweat so I immediately took my handkerchief from my pocket and then wiped it before facing the door and opening it.
"What a knocking horse!" I automatically clutched my chest in shock when I saw Bryce about to knock on the bathroom door but I opened it before he could. Because of what I said, I heard James laughing not far from Bryce. I looked at them and all five gave me the peace sign together and then ran back to the living room.
"Tss." I turned to Bryce again and the annoyance on his face was obvious because of the furrowed brow and meeting of his two eyebrows.
"W-What are you d-doing here?" I couldn't help but bite my bottom lip because of my stuttering. What the hell are you stuttering, Gia?! Pull yourself together!
"W-What are you doing? W-Why are you a-approaching?” I automatically took a step back when Bryce suddenly walked towards me. I didn't take my eyes off him to see how his brow furrowed even more and the seriousness in his eyes was obvious.
I swallowed because he didn't even answer. I don't know if there is a heater in the bathroom because the heat I felt earlier when I was alone here seems to have doubled. The bathroom has a small space, so I only took a few steps when I felt the wall behind me causing me to swallow again.
"Ah!" I couldn't help but scream when Bryce suddenly pulled the hem of my top uniform and with the force he used it caused me to bump into his hard chest.
Wait. What?! Tough?! Do you need to describe his chest like that, Gia Blythe?! Damn!
I immediately distanced myself from him but it wasn't that far either because I immediately froze in my position when I felt him gently raise the hem of my top. "W-What the h-hell are you t-trying to do?!" It's hard for me to breathe because of the closeness of the two of us and I blurted out.
But like before I didn't hear him answer. I couldn't look at him and just fixed my eyes on the wall on the side and there I saw the reflection of the two of us in the mirror. I saw how his face looked blankly at my bruise. I couldn't read what he was thinking because there was no reaction on his face. I don't know how long I stood there holding my breath when Bryce finally left without even saying anything.
"Yeah. It turns out that Nurse Gia has a love life.” I heard Ayesha's statement and then giggled.
"Yes. Gosh! They're a match! Sir Bryce is handsome and Nurse Gia is beautiful." Lyra agreed that the thrill she felt was evident in her voice.
"Stop it. They're not t-things.” Joseph.
"Oh no. Since you like Nurse Gia that's why you're like that. Hmmm!” Ayesha was teasing him. "You have no hope for Nurse Gia. Roseanne is there, so you'll be with her because she also plans to become a nurse."
"Be quiet." Suddenly, the five fell silent because James rebuked them.
I sighed and then walked out. I met them and the smiles greeted by Lyra and Ayesha while Joseph was obviously annoyed and embarrassed and James and Roseanne just smiled at me.
I can feel the awkwardness because of the opinions I heard and I just can't figure out anything about Bryce's sudden actions. What the hell is he doing? It's so hard to read! That punk! Argh!
"Are you all right, Nurse Gia?" My confusion for Ayesha rose when suddenly I could hear the teasing in her tone. "It's like you have a fever because your face is so red." Lyra followed that teasing further and then giggled. "You two should stop and get Nurse Gia some water, not what you're thinking." James reprimanded them and the two immediately scratched their necks and then marched toward the kitchen. "Did you get a big bruise?" I turned to James when he asked that question and it was obvious that Roseanne was interested because she immediately looked at me and listened to my answer. "It's a little big but it's okay because I already put on the ointment that Roseanne gave me," I replied and then felt my bruise again and for a moment I was shocked because of the pain again. I winced because of the realization that I seemed to have temporarily forgotten the bruise I had because of what Bryce had done earlier. "How many days will your bruise last before it completely disappears?"
When I came out of the tent, I couldn't avoid thinking about Braylon's question to Bryce because Braylon himself, who was his cousin, couldn't know what was going through his mind. I just held my breath and when I was about to go to the canopy tent that was closest to me to help another volunteer nurse, I saw a lady carrying her child and a trace of concern on her face, and add to that the speed of her walking that she is almost on all fours. I immediately took action and got a wheelchair and met the mother and daughter who were still far from other people. "Thanks a lot." The lady thanked her and then immediately sat her daughter in the wheelchair and she pushed it there. I immediately followed them as I watched the girl. She has red rashes and it is obvious that she is having trouble swallowing and that she is nauseous. Because of that, I was immediately convinced of what illness she had, although I am not sure yet, I cannot ignore the symptoms I see in the child because if proven,
Braylon and Bryce drove off in their different and beloved cars. The medical mission for today isn't over yet, so I can't rest yet, but that's okay because, besides the fact that I'm not tired yet, I'd rather help the people here than stare at home. "Gia." I turned around when I heard that familiar voice of Dra. McKenna. "Yes, Doctor? Do you need anything?" The shock on her face was obvious when my conversation with her became formal, although since we met again, I have treated her the same way. She is a doctor and I am a nurse. We are in the same field and work so it is only appropriate that I be formal in my conversation with her. "You can c-call me M-Mommy, Gia." Sadness immediately appeared in her voice. "No need, Doctora, besides I'm not used to calling anyone at that address. I have lived without someone I can call Mommy for so many years.” I was cold towards her causing her face to become depressed and her shoulders to fall automatically. "Gia, honey.." She called me, causi
I don't know how many minutes I stood where I was because of what that man Bryce had said before I started walking home again. I passed a few more houses before I finally arrived at the house where Dra. McKenna and I were staying. "Do you think she'll like what I cooked, Dad?" I automatically frowned when I heard that Doctora was talking to someone inside. "Of course. That's your daughter's favorite, Gwen. I'm sure she'll like it even more and you cooked it." My eyes widened when I heard that familiar voice of Grandpa. He's here? Since when? Why didn't he tell me he was coming here? I immediately ran into the house and then ducked into the kitchen just to see Dra. McKenna was preparing food on the table while her laptop was facing her. That's when I realized that he had just made a video called Grandpa. "Gia, you're here," Doctora announced when she saw me, and then she immediately presented the laptop to me and there I saw Grandpa smiling at me. "Good evening, Grandpa." I greete
I don't know what time I fell asleep again since I woke up because of that bad dream. I even woke up earlier than my alarm clock until it rang so I immediately got up. But I also spent a few minutes in a stupor until I decided to go to the bathroom to take a shower and do my routines. After that, I left the house, and just like on my first day, Doctora McKenna was already there at the kitchen table waiting for me. The food she cooked for that morning was also ready there. I would not have accompanied her again and would have turned away from her which was immediately the result of the fall of her shoulders and the immediate look of sadness on her face when the sound of my stomach growling dominated the silence of the house. Because of that, I firmly closed my eyes due to annoyance because I was sure Doctora heard that. "Come here, honey. E-Eat first.” She was so nice to me that I just sighed as I walked closer to the seat closest to me. I remained bowed but Doctora's sweet smile did n
I don't know where Bryce and I are going but I still can't take my eyes off him. Those scars on his body are still bothering me but at the same time, I can't help but admire his body. He is now wearing white long sleeves while his slacks and suit are dark blues. His clothes fit him well and his ex was so strong that I can understand why the female employees who had just boarded the elevator after a few floors that we passed were whispering like that. "Boss is handsome, right?" "What are you? Don't make a noise there." "I just can't help but admire each of his features." "I understand you, but maybe because of your admiration, we will lose our jobs, so shut up." I couldn't help but grin because I couldn't stop laughing when I heard that conversation between the two employees in front of us. I don't know if Bryce heard or saw that in his peripheral vision, so he suddenly looked at me and gave me his evil look again. Until suddenly the elevator rang and stopped and suddenly Bryce pul
"Are you flirting with me, Mr. Bryce Phoenix Huxley?” I didn't see any reaction on his face but I could read the amazement at the same time as the surprise in his eyes. A few more seconds passed without anyone else speaking between us again and the amount of time we stared at each other gave me a strange feeling. I also feel like I'm holding my breath as if I'm underwater. "Is that what you are feeling, Ms. Gia Blythe McKenna?” Until suddenly he spoke and because I still didn't take my eyes off his face, I saw how a silly smile drew on his lips. I swallowed hard because of his hot and fragrant breath hitting my face. “Yes.” That was the answer that came out of my mouth which surprised him again but there was still no reaction on his face. Is this one a robot? If I don't look into his eyes, I won't be able to read any reaction on his face. I could feel the strange warmth in me caused by our position but it seemed to sting even more when Bryce came closer to me causing me to swallow
“Ms. McKenna will be mine for that night.” “Ms. McKenna will be mine for that night.” “Ms. McKenna will be mine for that night.” I don't know how many times I've been stunned by this while Grandma Briella led me on a walk to the restaurant where we were going to eat for dinner. I honestly wanted to refuse her offer but I was too deaf to the repeated echoes of Bryce saying that. Mine? What does he mean by mine? He likes messing up with my mind! "Dear, what do you want to eat?" Does he even know what a woman can think when he uses such terms? "Gia, what's your order?" Maybe he's just used to using that term. "Gia?" Wait. Used to? So with all the women he talks to, is he like that? Am I assuming? Damn! “Gia Blythe?” My vision returned to the present when I felt Grandma Briella holding my hand at the same time she called me. "Are you s-saying something, G-Grandma?" Full of shame and doubt I asked Grandma who suddenly grinned at me and then looked back at the menu in her hand.
"Are you sure you want to take me?" I asked Bryce while we were on the yacht going to the other island where we were supposed to buy clothes that I would wear on the day of the prayer for his brother's death anniversary. I didn't have any clothes that would fit in such a gathering, so I was having second thoughts about going along, and another thing is that I'm still not that close to his family. I am only close to his grandparents and I feel comfortable only with them. Because it is certain that on the day of the prayer, many of his relatives will go there. "Yes. You looked restless a while ago. Are you okay?" he asked me. I couldn't avoid my two cheeks getting puffy as he gently pressed them so I gasped. I heard him laugh. "You're really cute, Gia." His compliment to me immediately caused my face to blush which I avoided by stroking him. "I can't help but be nervous because I'll see almost your whole family there," I said while bowing down but my forehead was wrinkled like that an
"Braylon," I called the man one morning when I saw him just finishing helping to organize the things that would be needed that day. "Gia," he also called me and then approached me. He took my medical bag and then we walked to the tent where I was assigned that morning. "Aren't you going to ask where Bryce is?" he suddenly asked and then placed the medical bag on the nearest chair. I smiled and then shook my head. "I already know that he is on the other island to accompany some of their investors." I can't help but be confident as I answer those words. I couldn't stop biting my lips either. Braylon suddenly winced. "Tss. I hope everyone is updated with each other," he promised and then sat in the seat next to the one where he placed the medical bag. "Yours, even if I try to update every minute with everything I've done, I'm doing and I've done, there's still nothing and I don't think there's any hope of being cared about anymore." There are traces of sullenness and sadness in his vo
"Hi." There was an immediate smile on his lips when I faced him. Like the moonlight it was dazzling. Honestly speaking, his good looks are always dazzling. Damn it, Gia. If Bryce came to read your mind, I swear you'll be digging your own grave because of embarrassment. I was exhausted. "What trip did you and Braylon have, hmm?" I kept asking to somehow get rid of the reddening of my face. "What do you mean trip?" His forehead immediately wrinkled when I raised my forehead because I couldn't help but smile. I like it every time his blank face gets different expressions when he talks to me. It makes me feel special because he becomes like that only to me. "This is not a trip, Gia. This is what you called a date." I couldn't help but feel sorry for him confirming that. I know what it is. I already have an idea but I'm preventing myself from assuming anything about this and the fact that he confirmed what brings butterflies into my stomach. When he guided me to sit down, I just let hi
"Where is that cousin of yours, Braylon?" I asked because we had just moved and everyone was on the yacht I still couldn't see him. I think I've been all over this yacht and I still can't see Bryce even though his shadow is gone. Braylon watched me laughing. "Are you so in love with my cousin and you can't be bothered by that? Can't you first be satisfied with the idea and the fact that we are going to see him?" I sighed and then leaned back in my seat. Here we are now in the cockpit. This yacht is not that big compared to the one Bryce and I was on. "Do you think I am in love with him already?" I couldn't avoid being asked although I couldn't look straight at Braylon who did nothing but eat and eat gummies. Suddenly I heard him sigh causing me to look up at him. His face became serious and it immediately gave me a strange feeling of nervousness. "You are in love, Gia." That's how seriously he said those words. "I don't have anything against what you're feeling towards my cousin bu
"Oh? What happened to your face? Why does it look like heaven and earth have fallen?" I asked Braylon one day when he suddenly appeared here again on a medical mission. He snorted and sat in front of my table where sat the patients we see every day. "Include hell as well," he promised. I grimaced and then pinched his forehead causing him to moan, hold him there and give me a bad look. "Get settled. What happened again, huh? Did Saighna ignore you again?" I asked even though I knew Saighna always did that to him. "Is that even a question up until now?" Sadness can be seen in his voice but if I let him feel more and more that the woman doesn't like him, he will only get sadder. I just shook my head and then took a jar of gummy worms from the bag at my side. "Here. Just eat those gummy worms," I promised, and then immediately gave him three. Suddenly, when I looked up at him, he was glaring at me. "Oh why?", "Why three?" he asked and then motioned to me the gummy worms that were a
During the trip back to the medical mission, Bryce still didn't release his grip on my hand. But that's how quickly I let him go when I saw a commotion in the area. We immediately got out of the car when we saw that everyone was in trouble. "What happened?" I asked when I saw Braylon helping the rioters and taking care of the nurses and doctors for the injured residents of the island. "I don't know. Suddenly, something exploded in a house at the far end of the island. When we got there and looked, the whole house was on fire. Fortunately, the people who lived there were outside when it exploded, but because due to the force caused by the explosion, materials from the house were thrown, causing injuries to people close to the area," Braylon explained at length before again supporting the nurses who were just approaching us who had their lead too. I started to act. I went to the tent where the other patients were. Compared to the tents we have been using for the past few days, this o
"Hey.." His voice was very soft. It's like his tone is holding me back. It's too light, the opposite of what I'm feeling now. "Hush now, baby. Shh. I'm here. I won't leave you," he promised as I felt him kiss my hair. We both let each other sit on the grass facing the sea while my tears continued to fall. "I lose my younger sister.." I promised he stopped him even though he hugged me tighter. "I lose her and I blame my parents for so long without thinking that they are also hurt by what happened." I stopped when I felt something start to block my throat. "I blamed them. I blame them and because of that, I become selfish. I didn't think that if I lost my brother, they lost too." I felt even more the tightening of his hug on me even as he kissed my hair again. "I let them feel that they lose both of me and my sister. I failed them. I failed them, Bryce. I failed my parents. I let them feel those things just because I became selfish. I only thought about myself. I'm just thinking about
I don't know what time I fell asleep again this morning. I just woke up when I heard someone talking to Mommy outside. I was going to leave the room. When I woke up and the morning stars were slightly removed from my eyes, I was immediately greeted by a very fragrant and masculine man who smelled like the person who had his back on me now. He was wearing a black suit and from where I was I could see how broad his shoulders were. You wouldn't think there was a wound behind the expensive clothes she was wearing. When Mommy noticed me, her smile widened. They were so beautiful that I almost forgot that he cried last night. "Gia is already awake-" Mommy interrupted what she was about to say when I quickly entered my room again. I remembered that I didn't even have anything in order with my face. Shame! Her perfume was wafting and I didn't even have a toothbrush! Shame on you, Gia! "I guess he will fix it," I heard Mommy promise followed by laughter. I acted quickly and did everything I
I woke up one night when I suddenly heard crying from the other room. I immediately got up and checked what time it was. One o'clock in the morning… I quickly went to my mother's room. It was dark there so I stumbled before finally sitting on the edge of her bed. I felt the lampshade and turned on its light. I immediately got nervous when I saw my mother crying. "Mom," I called her while squeezing her cold and trembling hand. "Mommy, wake up," I said while caressing her cheek. I wiped her tears even though they continued. "Mom. Mommy, wake up." She tossed back and looked like she was catching her breath when she finally woke up. She continued to cry until she turned to me. That's how she whined when she saw me. She hugged both her knees and headed there. She let her crying continue again while I didn't know what to do. "Mom..." I called her. "Mom, you're having a nightmare.." I said and then guided her head to rest on my shoulder so that she could cry there as long as she wanted
