"Grandpa, you know that I don't have any issue with helping people especially when it concerns their health but do I have to work with your daughter?" I can't count how many times I've asked Grandpa about this because I don't know why he has to send me to a place where I can be with his daughter even though he knows that I don't want to be with her.
"You're losing your manners, Gia." I swallowed my saliva hard in no time due to the sudden seriousness of Grandpa's tone on the other line. "I'm sending you there to help people and yes, also for you to be with your mother."
"But you know that I don't want to be with her, don't you?" I'm losing hope of confirmation while I'm here on the beach and waiting for a boat to board the island where the medical mission started by my mother will be held.
"How long are you going to ignore your mother?" I heard Grandpa sigh on the other line as if he was losing patience because of my stubbornness.
"She was the first to ignore it," I reasoned as I walked along the beach to one of the boats here and sat there first. I looked around and the weather isn't that hot today so it was okay even if I stayed here and waited for a while.
"But she's getting back to you now, Gia." I smiled bitterly because my mother was very lucky to have Grandpa. After all, despite what she did, he was still willing to accept her and now even helps her.
"We both know it's too late for her to try and recover what she wanted to have again Grandpa."
I just bowed at my feet while talking to Grandpa. For the second time, I heard the old man sighing, and just now I could see that he was already massaging the bridge of his nose. That's his mannerism especially when he's stressed with me. "Let's stop talking-"
"How about your father?" I was about to finish this conversation with Grandpa because I don't want him to think about anything else, but here he is asking about my father.
"They're just the same, Grandpa." When I turned my eyes back to the sea when I heard something coming from there, I saw a boat. "The boat is here, Grandpa. I have to hang up."
"Be careful there, grandchild." I smiled because of the tenderness of Grandpa's voice. He's always soft when it comes to me. "And please, at least try to get along with your mother, hmmkay?"
"I will try it for you, Grandpa. But I'm not saying promise, hmmkay?" I even imitated Grandpa's tone so I could hear him laugh from the other line.
"Yes, grandpa. Thank you. Take care. Grandpa loves you so much, my princess. Please don't come back here with someone as your boyfriend because I'm not yet ready, hmmkay?"
I laughed because of what he said and out of nowhere I thought of teasing him. "Grandpa, it doesn't matter if you're not ready yet because the important thing is that I am the one who's ready right?"
"Gia Blythe McKenna!"
I burst out laughing because Grandpa called my full name as if he believed in me and he was stressed because of what I said even though the truth is that he didn't believe because he knew I'm not like that.
"Come on, Grandpa. Did you think that eh? Go ahead. I'll call you again when I'm on the island. Take a break and don't focus on work," I reminded Grandpa and then smiled at the boatman when he came to me and helped me with my things. "Remember that I'm not there by your side so don't be stubborn and listen to my instructions."
"Yes, my pretty Nurse," he answered with a laugh until he hung up the phone. The smile that our conversation brought about didn't disappear from my lips even though the topic we started with earlier wasn't that good.
"You're on the way to the island of the Huxleys, aren't you, Mam?" I turned to the boatman when he suddenly spoke when we finally got on his boat.
"Yes, Sir."
I sat down as soon as I saw the closest space to me. I looked around the entire boat. It wasn't that big but it was comfortable and not crowded because there were only a few of us there. Aside from the boatman and I, we have another old woman with us, two people who look like they are friends because they were already talking about something that I just didn't pay attention to when I comfortably got in the boat. The old woman that was next to me was at the far end of the boat while the two other passengers were in the first part of the boat they were shopping because of the vegetables and other food they brought.
"Are you one of the volunteer nurses who will help with the medical program on our island, dear?" I turned to the old woman sitting beside me when suddenly she asked a question. She greeted me with a sweet smile and I couldn't help but get amazed. Maybe she saw my medical bag so she deduced that I was a nurse.
"Yes, Mam. If you want, you can come with me so we can check your health," I offered to the old woman, whose face immediately brightened and the joy on her face was obvious because of my offer
"Really?" she still asked a question that made me laugh a little. "I'll come if you say you'll take care of me there, huh?"
My smile widened because of what she said. One of the good feelings that a nurse can feel in her work is that her patient entrusts her life to her. "Of course, Mam. That's for sure. I'll take care of you," I assured the old woman and then jokingly winked at her which made the latter laugh as well.
"You're such a fun kid. I hope you and my grandson will be friends so that somehow he won't always be preoccupied with his work. I'm afraid he'll forget to have fun sooner or later," said the old woman shaking her head.
"I can try to be friends with him, Mam," I agreed to the old woman's wish because I knew that was what she wanted to hear. Because that's how Grandpa is, that's why I can't disagree with him also, but that's fine with me. As long as I can make Grandpa happy and as long as I can, I will not hesitate to follow the wishes that will make him happy. That's why I'm here today and even if I don't want to be in the same place as my mother, I will do it because that's what Grandpa wants.
"Why do you seem to be having second thoughts about going to your destination, dear?" I turned to the old woman when she suddenly looked at me. When our eyes met, she was intently looking at me and watching my every reaction. I smiled because of how quickly she could read every movement of my face even though we had just met.
"It's not like that, Mam. I just have reasons why I'm not so sure of where I'm going." Her face is very gentle and although she has wrinkles on her face, I am sure that she was beautiful in her youth. She also has fair white skin which is why her blue dress with a matching pearl necklace served as a pendant that compliments every inch of her. She also looks clean because her hair is neatly tied in a ponytail.
"What's your name, grandchild?" The old woman asked me with a smile and that's when I realized that I didn't even know her name. I was so comfortable in her presence that it didn't even occur to me to know her name. Oh my!
"It's Gia Blythe, but you can call me Gia, Mam." I introduced myself to the old woman. "How about you, Mam? What's your name? I'm sorry I didn't introduce myself right away. I was too comfortable talking to you and I didn't remember even asking for your name." I scratched the back of my neck when I apologized to the old woman who just laughed.
"That's fine, dear. Even now I just remembered to ask your name. You can call me Grandma Briella." I smiled and then took the old woman's hand which made her smile even wider as I guided her backhand to my forehead as a sign of respect to her.
"Nice to meet you, Grandma Briella." To be honest, I was surprised because Grandma knew English. It's not that I'm judging but I'm just really surprised because she sounds so fluent. It's not that deep but I still can't help but be amazed because she has an aura of participating in beauty pageants in her youth.
"You know sometimes we have to put aside the reasons why we prefer not to go on and focus more on why we should go on." I stared at the old woman when she suddenly released those words to me. "Often we come to a point where we think that we should have just continued with the things that we chose not to continue and that is what is called regret because only then do you realize that it is a shame when you have nothing else to do if it does not regret." I felt Grandma caressing my hair and I felt comfortable because of that. "You're too young to choose not to go to destinations where there are fewer reasons why you don't want to go than reasons why you should go on. You're too young to waste your opportunities where you can learn even if it's difficult because at least at the end of the day you know you will have no regrets."
Honestly, I couldn't say anything to Grandma, so I ended up just being in front of her and dumbfounded. She noticed that so she just laughed and then jokingly pinched my cheek as if I was just a child of a few years old. I smiled sadly because I was more comfortable with her than my mother. She could read every reaction on my face faster than my mother.
"Thank you, Grandma, ah? At least I feel better," I thanked the old woman, who just returned a sweet smile and a simple nod.
A few minutes passed before we reached Huxley's island. I looked around but immediately slapped my forehead when I remembered that I didn't know exactly which part of the island they were based on.
"Is there a problem, Gia, dear?" I turned to Grandma when I heard her ask from behind me. It's good that she got off the boat. I actually asked the boatman to help her, who was supposed to take care of my things when I got off the boat, but I can do that, so I let the boatman take care of her.
"I don't know where your companions are based, Grandma. I forgot to ask." I was just scratching the back of my neck because of the stupidity I had done as well as the shame, especially when suddenly Grandma started laughing at me so I couldn't help but sulk.
"Oh, come on, child. Don't worry about that and I know where your companions are based." I was still snorting as I looked up at Grandma because I was still embarrassed when she suddenly pinched my cheek again.
I've been noticing Grandma looking very happy on my cheek. In a little while, I will think that she has conceived me. Grandma still has some sour hihihi.
Grandma pulled me and we started to walk the road to where my colleagues are said to be based. When we got there, we immediately got the attention of the people there in the biggest canopy tent for reasons I don't know. I looked at Grandma when she suddenly tightened her grip on me so I immediately supported her and made her sit on the chair near the water dispenser. I put down my things first and then took her a drink and then handed it to her.
"Are you sure of drinking water from a water dispenser? What if you'll get sick later and your grandson will put more pressure on us, Madame Briella?" I looked up at the not-so-old man who seemed to be the leader of this community.
"I have already drunk sea water, Captain Leon Perillo," Grandma answered to him indirectly.
Suddenly, the reaction of the Captain's face turned serious, and then he looked sharply at the old woman. "What are you doing here? Why are you here?"
I don't know why they are like that to the old woman and I don't have any idea either but it's not right that they are treating grandma like that and that she didn't do anything wrong in the first place. "This is a medical mission, so why are you questioning the old woman's presence here when this mission is for everyone."
"Who are you?" The captain turned his attention to me and on my side, I felt Grandma holding my hand in a way that it looks like she was calming me down. "Grandma? Are you Madame Briella's granddaughter?"
"Gia!" Everyone turned to see the doctor running in our direction and when she finally got close, she immediately embraced me.
"What are your relations with that child, Dra. McKenna?"
"She's my daughter, Captain Leon. Why?" replied the doctor after breaking the hug that I didn't respond with.
"Madame Briella is with her," answered the Captain, then the old man snorted, making my two eyebrows meet even more.
"Oh, my gosh! He's handsome from any angle!"
"Oh! You said it! Even if he doesn't care about me, I'll still be grateful to just have a glimpse of his perfectness!"
"Even just a glance~"
"Look here, Daddy!"
My brow furrowed because of the sudden noise around me and everyone looking in the same direction, especially those young people at heart and people my age. When I followed what they were looking at, I realized that they were looking at the newly arrived man as he walked towards us.
"Bryce." I turned to Grandma Briella when she suddenly mentioned a name while looking at the man and when I looked back at him, my heart almost burst out because I was surprised that he was right in front of me so I was even out of balance and just closed my eyes because I knew I was going to fall on the ground. But a few seconds later, I felt a firm arm around my waist and when I opened my eyes again, I almost squinted because of the inch that we only have in between!
"You're heavy." I suddenly went back into a trance when he lied about that because I'm not that heavy! Because I was also ashamed of our position, I immediately stood up. When I got ready, I could feel the sharp eyes on me from girls my age and gay men who were fantasizing about this man. I looked up at him again but he and Grandma Briella were already walking away when I looked back at them Grandma and I still met our eyes and then she smiled and let her grandson guide her again while walking. That's when I realized the position that Grandma Briella and Bryce had. Based on the whispers I hear from the elders around, they are the owners of this island. "Are you all right, sweetheart?" I turned to Dra. McKenna but I chose not to answer her. I sighed because of what happened. I was so surprised because of the closeness between the two of us earlier that I was not even able to move my eyes around his whole face. My eyes were fixed on his emotionless hazelnut-colored eyes. I don't see a
I don't know why Bryce looked at me that badly but I just tried not to pay attention to it even more and Braylon’s noises grabbed my attention. He is talking so much while I'm busy taking care of the medicines that haven't been taken out of the box yet. He also picks it up and then places it on the table in front of us while raising both eyebrows and giving me a silly grin. I made him suffer because he looked so annoying. Not because he's not handsome but because of the nonsense I read there. "I know you want to know how Bryce described you last night, Nurse Gia. Come on. Don't be shy. I'll tell you, eh." He even got a wink at me. "How sure are you that I want to know about it?" I raised an eyebrow at him and I don't know why he suddenly burst out laughing causing those people close to where we were to look at us and it felt like someone was watching me. "Because I can see it." Braylon’s simple response to my question made him frown. "What do you mean you can see it?" Braylon imme
I don't know how in such a quick time Bryce immediately got in front of me and immediately caught the blow that I was supposed to get from the furious man. As far as I remember, he wasn't with Braylon when they came to us, but he was here and Braylon came before them to help me. "Let go of me and don't interfere!" That terrifying voice of Alvin echoed throughout the place, causing Mam Elishea to feel so scared that her hands that were holding me trembled. I looked at her and it was obvious that she was very scared and that she was traumatized because of the behavior and actions of her husband. I was just about to turn my eyes to Alvin and Bryce when suddenly Alvin pulled Mam Elishea with one of his hands and because the lady was clinging to me, I was immediately taken by surprise. "Oh! My! Gosh! What is going on?” "Who asked Alvin to drink again?" "They know that's how he is when he drinks, eh." "I did see Alvin drinking with Kevin when I passed by Jayson's house." "Oh! My! Gosh
"Are you all right, Nurse Gia?" My confusion for Ayesha rose when suddenly I could hear the teasing in her tone. "It's like you have a fever because your face is so red." Lyra followed that teasing further and then giggled. "You two should stop and get Nurse Gia some water, not what you're thinking." James reprimanded them and the two immediately scratched their necks and then marched toward the kitchen. "Did you get a big bruise?" I turned to James when he asked that question and it was obvious that Roseanne was interested because she immediately looked at me and listened to my answer. "It's a little big but it's okay because I already put on the ointment that Roseanne gave me," I replied and then felt my bruise again and for a moment I was shocked because of the pain again. I winced because of the realization that I seemed to have temporarily forgotten the bruise I had because of what Bryce had done earlier. "How many days will your bruise last before it completely disappears?"
When I came out of the tent, I couldn't avoid thinking about Braylon's question to Bryce because Braylon himself, who was his cousin, couldn't know what was going through his mind. I just held my breath and when I was about to go to the canopy tent that was closest to me to help another volunteer nurse, I saw a lady carrying her child and a trace of concern on her face, and add to that the speed of her walking that she is almost on all fours. I immediately took action and got a wheelchair and met the mother and daughter who were still far from other people. "Thanks a lot." The lady thanked her and then immediately sat her daughter in the wheelchair and she pushed it there. I immediately followed them as I watched the girl. She has red rashes and it is obvious that she is having trouble swallowing and that she is nauseous. Because of that, I was immediately convinced of what illness she had, although I am not sure yet, I cannot ignore the symptoms I see in the child because if proven,
Braylon and Bryce drove off in their different and beloved cars. The medical mission for today isn't over yet, so I can't rest yet, but that's okay because, besides the fact that I'm not tired yet, I'd rather help the people here than stare at home. "Gia." I turned around when I heard that familiar voice of Dra. McKenna. "Yes, Doctor? Do you need anything?" The shock on her face was obvious when my conversation with her became formal, although since we met again, I have treated her the same way. She is a doctor and I am a nurse. We are in the same field and work so it is only appropriate that I be formal in my conversation with her. "You can c-call me M-Mommy, Gia." Sadness immediately appeared in her voice. "No need, Doctora, besides I'm not used to calling anyone at that address. I have lived without someone I can call Mommy for so many years.” I was cold towards her causing her face to become depressed and her shoulders to fall automatically. "Gia, honey.." She called me, causi
I don't know how many minutes I stood where I was because of what that man Bryce had said before I started walking home again. I passed a few more houses before I finally arrived at the house where Dra. McKenna and I were staying. "Do you think she'll like what I cooked, Dad?" I automatically frowned when I heard that Doctora was talking to someone inside. "Of course. That's your daughter's favorite, Gwen. I'm sure she'll like it even more and you cooked it." My eyes widened when I heard that familiar voice of Grandpa. He's here? Since when? Why didn't he tell me he was coming here? I immediately ran into the house and then ducked into the kitchen just to see Dra. McKenna was preparing food on the table while her laptop was facing her. That's when I realized that he had just made a video called Grandpa. "Gia, you're here," Doctora announced when she saw me, and then she immediately presented the laptop to me and there I saw Grandpa smiling at me. "Good evening, Grandpa." I greete
I don't know what time I fell asleep again since I woke up because of that bad dream. I even woke up earlier than my alarm clock until it rang so I immediately got up. But I also spent a few minutes in a stupor until I decided to go to the bathroom to take a shower and do my routines. After that, I left the house, and just like on my first day, Doctora McKenna was already there at the kitchen table waiting for me. The food she cooked for that morning was also ready there. I would not have accompanied her again and would have turned away from her which was immediately the result of the fall of her shoulders and the immediate look of sadness on her face when the sound of my stomach growling dominated the silence of the house. Because of that, I firmly closed my eyes due to annoyance because I was sure Doctora heard that. "Come here, honey. E-Eat first.” She was so nice to me that I just sighed as I walked closer to the seat closest to me. I remained bowed but Doctora's sweet smile did n
"Are you sure you want to take me?" I asked Bryce while we were on the yacht going to the other island where we were supposed to buy clothes that I would wear on the day of the prayer for his brother's death anniversary. I didn't have any clothes that would fit in such a gathering, so I was having second thoughts about going along, and another thing is that I'm still not that close to his family. I am only close to his grandparents and I feel comfortable only with them. Because it is certain that on the day of the prayer, many of his relatives will go there. "Yes. You looked restless a while ago. Are you okay?" he asked me. I couldn't avoid my two cheeks getting puffy as he gently pressed them so I gasped. I heard him laugh. "You're really cute, Gia." His compliment to me immediately caused my face to blush which I avoided by stroking him. "I can't help but be nervous because I'll see almost your whole family there," I said while bowing down but my forehead was wrinkled like that an
"Braylon," I called the man one morning when I saw him just finishing helping to organize the things that would be needed that day. "Gia," he also called me and then approached me. He took my medical bag and then we walked to the tent where I was assigned that morning. "Aren't you going to ask where Bryce is?" he suddenly asked and then placed the medical bag on the nearest chair. I smiled and then shook my head. "I already know that he is on the other island to accompany some of their investors." I can't help but be confident as I answer those words. I couldn't stop biting my lips either. Braylon suddenly winced. "Tss. I hope everyone is updated with each other," he promised and then sat in the seat next to the one where he placed the medical bag. "Yours, even if I try to update every minute with everything I've done, I'm doing and I've done, there's still nothing and I don't think there's any hope of being cared about anymore." There are traces of sullenness and sadness in his vo
"Hi." There was an immediate smile on his lips when I faced him. Like the moonlight it was dazzling. Honestly speaking, his good looks are always dazzling. Damn it, Gia. If Bryce came to read your mind, I swear you'll be digging your own grave because of embarrassment. I was exhausted. "What trip did you and Braylon have, hmm?" I kept asking to somehow get rid of the reddening of my face. "What do you mean trip?" His forehead immediately wrinkled when I raised my forehead because I couldn't help but smile. I like it every time his blank face gets different expressions when he talks to me. It makes me feel special because he becomes like that only to me. "This is not a trip, Gia. This is what you called a date." I couldn't help but feel sorry for him confirming that. I know what it is. I already have an idea but I'm preventing myself from assuming anything about this and the fact that he confirmed what brings butterflies into my stomach. When he guided me to sit down, I just let hi
"Where is that cousin of yours, Braylon?" I asked because we had just moved and everyone was on the yacht I still couldn't see him. I think I've been all over this yacht and I still can't see Bryce even though his shadow is gone. Braylon watched me laughing. "Are you so in love with my cousin and you can't be bothered by that? Can't you first be satisfied with the idea and the fact that we are going to see him?" I sighed and then leaned back in my seat. Here we are now in the cockpit. This yacht is not that big compared to the one Bryce and I was on. "Do you think I am in love with him already?" I couldn't avoid being asked although I couldn't look straight at Braylon who did nothing but eat and eat gummies. Suddenly I heard him sigh causing me to look up at him. His face became serious and it immediately gave me a strange feeling of nervousness. "You are in love, Gia." That's how seriously he said those words. "I don't have anything against what you're feeling towards my cousin bu
"Oh? What happened to your face? Why does it look like heaven and earth have fallen?" I asked Braylon one day when he suddenly appeared here again on a medical mission. He snorted and sat in front of my table where sat the patients we see every day. "Include hell as well," he promised. I grimaced and then pinched his forehead causing him to moan, hold him there and give me a bad look. "Get settled. What happened again, huh? Did Saighna ignore you again?" I asked even though I knew Saighna always did that to him. "Is that even a question up until now?" Sadness can be seen in his voice but if I let him feel more and more that the woman doesn't like him, he will only get sadder. I just shook my head and then took a jar of gummy worms from the bag at my side. "Here. Just eat those gummy worms," I promised, and then immediately gave him three. Suddenly, when I looked up at him, he was glaring at me. "Oh why?", "Why three?" he asked and then motioned to me the gummy worms that were a
During the trip back to the medical mission, Bryce still didn't release his grip on my hand. But that's how quickly I let him go when I saw a commotion in the area. We immediately got out of the car when we saw that everyone was in trouble. "What happened?" I asked when I saw Braylon helping the rioters and taking care of the nurses and doctors for the injured residents of the island. "I don't know. Suddenly, something exploded in a house at the far end of the island. When we got there and looked, the whole house was on fire. Fortunately, the people who lived there were outside when it exploded, but because due to the force caused by the explosion, materials from the house were thrown, causing injuries to people close to the area," Braylon explained at length before again supporting the nurses who were just approaching us who had their lead too. I started to act. I went to the tent where the other patients were. Compared to the tents we have been using for the past few days, this o
"Hey.." His voice was very soft. It's like his tone is holding me back. It's too light, the opposite of what I'm feeling now. "Hush now, baby. Shh. I'm here. I won't leave you," he promised as I felt him kiss my hair. We both let each other sit on the grass facing the sea while my tears continued to fall. "I lose my younger sister.." I promised he stopped him even though he hugged me tighter. "I lose her and I blame my parents for so long without thinking that they are also hurt by what happened." I stopped when I felt something start to block my throat. "I blamed them. I blame them and because of that, I become selfish. I didn't think that if I lost my brother, they lost too." I felt even more the tightening of his hug on me even as he kissed my hair again. "I let them feel that they lose both of me and my sister. I failed them. I failed them, Bryce. I failed my parents. I let them feel those things just because I became selfish. I only thought about myself. I'm just thinking about
I don't know what time I fell asleep again this morning. I just woke up when I heard someone talking to Mommy outside. I was going to leave the room. When I woke up and the morning stars were slightly removed from my eyes, I was immediately greeted by a very fragrant and masculine man who smelled like the person who had his back on me now. He was wearing a black suit and from where I was I could see how broad his shoulders were. You wouldn't think there was a wound behind the expensive clothes she was wearing. When Mommy noticed me, her smile widened. They were so beautiful that I almost forgot that he cried last night. "Gia is already awake-" Mommy interrupted what she was about to say when I quickly entered my room again. I remembered that I didn't even have anything in order with my face. Shame! Her perfume was wafting and I didn't even have a toothbrush! Shame on you, Gia! "I guess he will fix it," I heard Mommy promise followed by laughter. I acted quickly and did everything I
I woke up one night when I suddenly heard crying from the other room. I immediately got up and checked what time it was. One o'clock in the morning… I quickly went to my mother's room. It was dark there so I stumbled before finally sitting on the edge of her bed. I felt the lampshade and turned on its light. I immediately got nervous when I saw my mother crying. "Mom," I called her while squeezing her cold and trembling hand. "Mommy, wake up," I said while caressing her cheek. I wiped her tears even though they continued. "Mom. Mommy, wake up." She tossed back and looked like she was catching her breath when she finally woke up. She continued to cry until she turned to me. That's how she whined when she saw me. She hugged both her knees and headed there. She let her crying continue again while I didn't know what to do. "Mom..." I called her. "Mom, you're having a nightmare.." I said and then guided her head to rest on my shoulder so that she could cry there as long as she wanted
