Owen Bennet had several people lined up for the interview. He needed to fill three positions to help care for his mother, Hailey Bennet.
In the past five years, his mom’s Alzheimer’s had gradually progressed, so he needed trained professionals to care for her as the maids they employed to do housework had difficulty knowing the right thing to do.
First, Hailey forgot little things. She couldn’t recall her name while filling out a form, but she shrugged it off as old age.
Then, as she stood in the middle of the mall, it took her a moment to remember why she was there. Only the sound of her assistant’s voice calling her name eventually brought her back.
She denied being sick, but when they realized she did not know who she was for longer periods, they knew it was time to bring in the professionals.
All the Bennet family members were present that afternoon to interview the candidates. Owen wanted to involve his mother and brothers so they could scope out the potential applicants and recommend the best person for her needs.
Owen had invited only male job applicants, as he wanted to protect his brothers from women who might seduce them and use them for their wealth. After his sordid experience with his ex-girlfriend, he became distrustful of women.
Having a name like Princess should have tipped him off right away.
-=-
Owen always thought the pouty lips, baby voice, and entitled attitude were qualities Princess only showed when they were together, so she could get more of his attention. He even found it cute that she was childish and clingy when they were together.
He did not know that it was her actual personality and that she had not been faking the whole time.
Her beauty blinded Owen. He never imagined that a woman as pretty as Princess would fall for him because, during his growing years, he was an awkward, lanky teenager with his face full of acne.
But she did, and they had been happy until she wanted more.
Blonde, baby blue eyes, curvy body shape, average height, and weight, Princess had the perfect features of any woman he’s ever known, and he had fallen so deeply in love that in his eyes, she could do no wrong.
“Thank the heavens you are here, my princess.” Owen hugged her tightly, glad that she had finally arrived.
“I’m sorry, Owen, but we can’t be together anymore.”
“What? Ces, are you breaking up with me at my father’s funeral?”
“I have to be true to myself, Owen. You are nothing without your father.”
“What are you saying?”
“Your father was the key to making you a great man. But now, you’ve lost that potential. Soon you’re going to be poor.” Owen stared at her, dumbfounded, not getting what she was talking about or where it was all coming from.
“And I don’t date poor losers.”
“Loser? You think I’m a loser?”
“You think I’m superficial now, but I need to prepare for my future. And you’re not it.”
The ache in his heart had magnified tenfold when Princess broke up with him because, in his grief and pain, Owen expected her to be there to comfort him. He just lost his father, but she did not consider that when she dumped him.
Later, he learned Princess dumped him because she needed someone who could financially support her while she enjoyed the finer things in life. In short, she needed a rich husband in a suitable position.
It was not automatic that Owen distrusted women. Blondes in general.
It took several of Princesses’ friends to hit on him to fill the hate he felt in his heart. They weren’t even natural blondes, getting the color of their hair from a bottle, giving all the natural-born fair-haired women a bad name. It was like they were taunting him by dressing and acting like Princess.
He probably didn’t notice they were all spoiled brats because he loved hanging with the popular crowd.
One by one, her friends approached him, and they weren’t even subtle about their intentions.
“I always thought you were very handsome, despite the greasy face and acne. Too bad Princess got you first. But I don’t care. I heard that slut brag about your package, and I want a piece of that.” Candy said, as she caressed his face with one hand and the other, trying to feel him up to check if the rumors were true.
“I do not care if your daddy is dead. You look like you have a ton of potential. Some minor surgery and healthy food choices can change all that since you already have the body.” Destiny touched his chest as she came onto him. He was changing into his PE uniform, and this was how she caught him in the state of undress.
“Consider being with me as payment. I will transform you into a handsome stud, and we can get back at Princess.” She was the assistant cheerleader, and though she was supposed to be Princess’s best friend, they hated each other’s guts.
“Honestly, Owen, Princess is a bitch. She did not deserve your love. You and I are a better match. I can make you happier.”
“See this tongue ring I just got?” Chastity whorled her tongue to show off her new jewelry. She had slept with half the football team, so she was nowhere near the attribute of her name.
One by one, Owen told them to take the high road and never show their ugly faces again, for he knew they only paid attention to him because Princess had discarded him. They were like sharks, and he was their prey.
He knew that categorizing women according to their hair color was wrong. The rest of the blonde-haired women around the world were kind and intelligent. However, his negative experiences with the popular girls in school led him to assign all their negative traits to women.
When he saw the woman at the elevator with the dirty-blonde hair, every ill feeling he had for their type got triggered.

“Mr. Bennet, please sign this before we leave.” Gerry, his assistant, called his attention, and for a brief second, he got distracted, but as Owen looked back toward his office, he realized the woman who just got out of the elevator was wearing medical scrubs.
“Nooo!” Owen yelled and banged his palm on the door as it closed. There was no way they could get back up in time, because Gerry had already placed the special code that would bring the elevator straight to the ground floor.
They used this for emergencies, so the elevator would not need to stop at every floor, especially during rush hour.
“Sir, is something wrong?” Owen had to figure out which was more important, the collapse of a wall at the building site or the interview upstairs.
He had but a few minutes to decide and knew that whatever he chose, there would be a tragic outcome.
‘She won’t get hired. I told my brothers what to do. They’d never disobey me.’
“Sir, did you say something?”
“No, nothing is wrong. Let’s get to the site right away. Get me the foreman on the phone.”
“He got injured and is at the hospital, sir.”
“Then get me the next person in line or the structural engineer in charge. I want them all at the site before I get there.”
Gerry was accustomed to Mr. Bennet’s stern and authoritative tone, which was expected of a man in his position. Being the Chief Operation Officer (COO) of a large construction firm, Owen cannot afford to be lax.
He needed to be the guiding force to ensure everything worked the way it should, and the structures they built stood for the next hundred years, as long as natural disasters did not interfere.
There was something about the woman at the elevator that haunted Owen. She looked far too young to be dealing with his mother, and for a brief second, he felt like her face reflected fear when their eyes met.
He saw the pupils in her emerald green eyes dilate as they widened, and her eyebrows shot upward. Her almost inaudible gasp confirmed there was something about him that alarmed her.
Attuned to the nuances of the female sex, he was sure that her expression was not out of recognition or sexual attraction, but out of fright.
He felt intrigued and wished he had been there to interview her and uncover the reason she had that expression.
Owen hates her already, and they haven't even met.
‘Not all blue-eyed men are gun-crazed maniacs.’ ‘They are not all bad. Some are nice people.’ ‘He was one guy, and they locked him up.’ Regina recited the positive mantra she created to calm down. “Reggie Martin?” Jonah asked, looking suspiciously at the roster. “Yeah, it’s Regina Martin. I signed my nickname when I filled out the form. Is that going to be a problem?” She asked, noticing only men were sitting in the waiting area when she looked around. “We did not expect—” Regina raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue. ‘Was he about to say, woman? Are these people sexists? Is that why there are only men here today? I think the Labor Department needs to give them a visit.’ Jonah cleared his throat. “Let us head in so we can start the interview.” “Ms. Regina Martin, here for the nurse position.” The men at the table looked at her in surprise. Miss? They tried to mask their reactions, but Regina noticed. “Mr. Myles Bennet to your left.” Myles nodded in his dark blue s
Mrs. Bennet looked around frantically a few minutes after Regina left. “Where is Mandy? Why did she go?” “Who?” Yvan asked. “My best friend. She was just here.” “The nurse? She had to go home for the day, Mom.” He answered. “Where does she live?” “It’s on her file.” Yvan got a swat on the side of his head. “What are you doing? Don’t give her ideas.” Myles ground the words out in a whisper. “We’ll show it to you later, Mom. The next applicant will be here in a few minutes.” He said in a normal tone. “Just don’t forget, okay? Maybe we will visit her later.” “Sure, Mom,” Myles said dismissively, thinking Mrs. Bennet was in one of her episodes and it would pass away soon, so he swept her request under the rug. -=- Regina was sure she wouldn’t get the job. She was the only female nurse there that day and caught early on that the invitation for the interview had definitely been a mistake, only because she signed her name as Reggie instead of Regina. They couldn’t cancel Regina
“Ma’am, I’m sorry to say this, but the madam never paid for the items she ordered.” Regina looked at the untouched cake slices in front of her and the fruit drinks beside them. When she hesitated, the server spoke. “You guys looked like you were discussing something important, so I didn’t think it was right to interrupt.” “Oh, it’s fine. I’m just calculating if I should eat half of this right now and the rest at home later, so you won’t think I’m a pig.” She laughed, and so did he, bringing out the dimple on his cheek. ‘Hmm, he’s kinda cute.’ Regina admired the cute server when she thought of an idea. “Do you mind if I ask the people in your cafe if they would like some free cakes and drinks? I really can’t consume all of this.” He agreed, and when only the chocolate cake and iced tea were left, Regina sat down and pretended she would eat it. “Oh, here’s my card. Just charge everything on it.” The man’s eyes lit up after reading her information. “Miss Albright, my name is Jas
A few days later, Regina was relaxing at home in her black tank top and tiny shorts, dancing to the beat of her favorite tunes. She just finished applying to another hospital, knowing she was not getting the Bennet job. So she played it cool. She borrowed a few of her father’s long-playing records, something they had in common even with almost 50 years of an age difference. Regina was a miracle baby. Her parents had given up on having a daughter. So when she came out, everyone doted on her and guarded her with their lives. She loved the sound the old record player made. It was an heirloom from her brother, handed down with the apartment. Choosing the next album and the feel of changing the records gave her entertainment. Stephen Albright had records he collected from when he was a teenager, classics from the 70s to the early 90s when record sales went down because of newer technology. Recently, popular musicians jumped back on the bandwagon, and the newer generation started calli
“Mrs. Bennet, would you like coffee or tea?” “Tea dear. I love tea. I can help you make some,” she replied while gazing at the pictures on the mantle. “Okay, you can help—” “No!” Owen replied, walking to the kitchen to intercept his mother. “I wanted to ask her to select the tea she wanted. She won’t get hurt. I know what I’m doing.” She whispered to Owen in an annoyed voice. “You keep saying that.” “Get the tea box from the pantry and bring it out here, Mrs. Bennet.” “It is not heavy. Even if she drops it, it’s fine. You have to stimulate your mother’s brain and let her think for herself.” Owen gritted his teeth. Though he didn’t agree with her methods, he let the issue go. “You’re babying your mother too much. Let her be. She’s not all gone yet.” ‘She’s probably right, but I’ll never agree with her.’ He snickered silently. “So do you want coffee or tea?” Regina laid out some butter cookies, macaroons, and pound cake she sliced up on a platter. “I’ll take coffee,” he repli
“Hello?” “Ms. Martin, report to my office tomorrow morning at seven. I need to brief you about your job.” “Did I get it?” She didn’t even bother to ask who called her on the phone. She only knew one domineering person who would order her around even before saying hello. “Yes, but there are conditions.” “But I got it, right? I’ll be there on the dot. Thanks!” Regina did her happy dance as she knew after yesterday’s visit from Mrs. Bennet there was no one else perfect for the job. Hailey seemed to take a shine to her and even considered her as a best friend. The next day, Regina headed to the elevator 30 minutes before seven and got surprised that Owen’s assistant was already there to meet her. Owen did a double take as Regina entered his office. She wore a business suit and had her hair slicked and tied at the back, making her look androgynous. Regina meant to surprise him, and she smiled, knowing he got affected like she wanted. She expected to be there earlier, wait for him,
Coming home after a long day, Owen prayed that his mother was not up to her old antics today. After the day he had been through, he was not ready to cater to her whims. “Has my mother had her dinner?” “Yes sir,” Stephan, the butler who welcomed Owen at the door, replied. “Would you like to have dinner in the dining room or on the patio?” “No, not yet. Give me at least 20 minutes before they set the table on the patio. My brothers are on their way.” “The nurse has left, I assume?” “About that sir…” “What? Spit it out!” Owen was losing his patience. He was ready to fire Regina on her second day if she did something wrong. “She’s in the shower with your mother.” “What?” Owen took huge strides to his mother’s room as the old butler struggled to keep up. “Your mother hasn’t bathed in a few days, and Ms. Regina said she had a solution for that—” “What did she do now?” Stephan blocked the door to the bathroom before Owen could enter. “I think we should give them some privacy.” “T
Yvan looked at their uncle, and the older man just shrugged with a smile, but Yvan won’t let it go that easily. “I understand now why you hired her. Aside from being able to communicate with Mom, she’s also a spitfire, and I like that.” Owen hummed dismissively. “I would have hired her too, but for a totally different reason.” Yvan winked at his brother. “She shouldn’t have been in the interview in the first place.” “But she was, and now she’s here.” “I’m just saying she’s nice to look at. I almost didn’t make it to my shoot today because I got distracted watching her entertain Mom.” “You think she has a boyfriend?” Owen glared at his brother. “She is off limits.” “Why? ‘Cause she’s a nurse?” “No, because we do not fraternize with the help.” “Okay.” Owen frowned. His brother readily agreed, and it made him suspicious. “What? Why are you giving me that look?” “I know you. You’re up to something.” “You’re right. I’m thinking of ways to get Regina fired, so I can visit her a
