The sound of the bell chimed throughout the cafe signaling a new customer's arrival. The strong scent of coffee lingered in the air as I opened the door to find a joyful Daisy adding the freshly made muffins and cookies in the display of glass. Toby, the man who ran the register was recounting and organizing the cash register from what I can see from here. He stood up straighter and smiled warmly at me as I approached the counter.
"Hello, McKenna. Welcome to Cathy's Cakes & Coffee." Toby is a blond haired man with bright green eyes, fresh out of community college. He had long wished to go to the university to pursue his career as a business major, however, while dreaming was easy, fulfilling those dreams is not. Universities cost a lot and Toby unfortunately didn't have the money he needed which is why I decided to sponsor him but my parents death happened and I couldn't visit anymore.
"Hey, Toby. How're you doing?" I waved at Daisy who is on her way to the kitchen. She smiled and blew a kiss my way before entering the kitchen. Daisy is the daughter of Cathy, the owner of the shop. She is also the one managing the business as her mom recovers from stroke. Cathy is a very sweet old lady who is very friendly with everyone. I made a mental note to ask Daisy about her before I leave.
"I'm alright. What can I get you guys today?" I turned to Dixon who has been staring at me the entire time. However, instead of feeling creeped out by his stare, I felt unbothered, in fact I felt safe and warm. I immediately matched his stare. His pair of grey eyes stared at mine deeply trying to convey so many things that words couldn't say and I just couldn't understand.
"Excuse me, please. I'll like to know what your orders will be." That seemed to break us out of the magical trance that we appeared to get into, every time our eyes meet. I felt my face turn slightly red in embarrassment as I moved my eyes away. Dixon cleared his throat and spoke.
"I'll have the Pumpkin Spiced Latte and..." He looked towards me waiting for my order.
"I'll have one Pistachio Rose Latte with a Raspberry Swirl Loaf, please." I said just as Toby punched in some random things into his screen. He opened his mouth to say something, our bill I guess but Dixon interrupted him by passing him his credit card.
"It'll be right out in a minute, sir." He sent the order to the back where Daisy prepared it while we waited in the corner for our orders.
"Why did you do that? I wanted to pay for it. I brought us here so I have to pay." He rolled his eyes.
"Did you seriously think that I'll let you pay the bill on our first date?" His eyes were as wide as saucers as he realized what he said. "Not like it's a date or anything, I just thought since you're here and I'm here and we're alone, it can be called a date, right? I couldn't possibly call it a date, I mean you're not even into me and I wouldn't want to put you in a tight spot knowing you're in love with someone else. that will be weird and awkward...like super weird and....."
I busted into laughter as I couldn't hold it in any longer. He stopped his rambles immediately I started laughing. I wiped the few tears that managed to escape.
"You're so cute, Dixon." I said still chuckling.
"Shut up, please." He said and I immediately noticed his ears turning pink. Is he like blushing?
"Awww... Are you blushing?" I asked the question that came in mind first. The bell behind the counter dinged and Toby rushed to the small window that separated the back kitchen and the front cafe, to pick up our orders. The fragrance of the Pistachio Rose Latte spread around the whole room, making the room smell more floral and delicious. Toby took the drinks and a small bag with the loaf in his hands and made his way to us. With a soft smile on his face, he handed over the goodies to Dixon while I collected the bag.
"Have a nice day, Sir. McKenna." He said before nodding at me. He turned to leave but I called him back.
"Toby, here's my card. You have to call me okay? It's really very important." I said handing him my business card specially made by Luke.
"Ohh, okay." He said and left. I looked towards Dixon who seems to be shooting lasers at Toby with his eyes. I nudged him with my elbows before using my head to tell him to follow him. We sat at the seat beside the window. If there's one thing I love about this cafe, it's the wonderful view of the sunset at dusk which is one of the reasons why I always came to watch the sunsets here every other day.
I took my seat after Dixon, being a perfect gentleman that he is, pushed the chair in. He set my drink in front of me, the fragrance immediately feeling my nostrils. I felt my mouth water waiting to taste this heavenly goodness. I couldn't resist the moan that escaped my lips as I took my first sip. I unwrapped the loaf and took a bite. I closed my eyes and enjoyed the way it melted and kissed my taste buds.
"That good?" He asked with a smile playing at his lips. I absolutely forgot that I was with someone. I'm used to enjoying these treats alone cause Jason almost never really comes here with me. He always comes alone though, I always thought that maybe he doesn't want to be seen with me but I guess I'll never know now.
"Sorry, I'm not used to coming here with someone." I said wiping my mouth with the napkin.
"I think it's cute."
"Like your rambles kind of cute?" He groaned and covered his eyes with both hands as I giggled.
"You're never going to forget that, will you?" I shook my head.
"Nahh, there's no fun in that." I said still smiling. I have always felt so safe around Dixon, I feel like I can be myself without the fear of being judged but I can't be in love with him or possibly even like him. Jason is my one true love, I felt that when we were still together but what are these feeling whenever I'm around Dixon. I cant explain them, it's like a magnetic field pulling me towards him and no matter how hard I try, I cant seem to stop the attraction.
"McKenna, you okay?" I jumped when I felt his hand on my shoulder. "I'm sorry to have frightened you but you weren't responding to any of my questions."
"I'm sorry. Was thinking about something. What were you saying?" He looked at me like he doesn't believe me but I'm definitely not telling him I was thinking about him. Thankfully, he dropped it.
"I said don't you feel like there are lots of unanswered questions concerning your parents death? I was reading the letter he sent me again and I just sensed something doesn't feel right. There is a but to this story." I nodded in understanding.
"You're right. I didn't really feel like anything was wrong until I received that letter. I may not know my father that well but I do know he's not the type to just type a letter and send to anyone except it's really necessary. What do you suggest we do?" I asked him.
"I feel like he has a plan. He wants to achieve something from all of this and I know for certain that your dad is a really good man which means whatever he has planned is a good thing." He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. He bit his lips as he looked me in the eye deeply.
"I think we have to do what he said to achieve the expected results. We have to date."
“Dixon, what are you doing here?” Jason asked.“Considering I have this, I’m supposed to be here.” He showed us the letter he was holding. It looks exactly like mine. Even from where I was standing, I can see my dad’s handwriting clear as the day. I seriously don’t get why dad will want Dixon to be here.“You have no business here, Get the fuck out.” Jason yelled.“That’s where you’re wrong. I have every right to be here. Greene’s is s major stockholder in the Wright’s company, so stop lying to the young lady and tell her the truth.”“Fine, I’ll leave but this is not over. Watch your back, Greene.” Jason said and left. I stood still in my spot wondering what on earth just happened.“Hey, are you okay?” He placed his hand on the small of my back and led me to a seat nearby. I nodded still in daze.I asked after I finally calmed down
We arrived at Luke’s house exactly 20 minutes later. I immediately got out of the vehicle after asking Dimitri to leave, I plan on getting a ride with Luke later on.I pressed the bell and waited for a response.”Who’s there?” I heard the voice of the security guard”It’s McKenna. Is Luke home? I need to see him. it’s urgent.”” Yeah, Sir Luke is in. I’ll let you in now.””Thanks.” I heard the door click open and I made my way to the house.Getting to the front door, I knocked. His housekeeper Vivian, opened the door.”Hello, McKenna. It’s been such a long time. How’re you doing?” She asked engulfing me in a bear hug.Vivian was Luke’s nanny since he was a kid. After his parents passed, she decided to stay back and take care of Luke till she’s up for retirement. She’s a very loving woman.”I’m good. How’re you? I hope Luke doesn’t stress you?” I asked as she released me.“Ohh, you know how the guy is.” She said chucklin
“What are you going to do now?” Luke asked.”I honestly don’t know, Luke. But one thing I’m sure of is the fact that I love him. I’m still in love with Jason.” I said.”McKenna, I get it. I totally do but you should understand what I’m saying too. Don’t let your love for Jason cloud your judgements. Your father had a reason for doing this, you know he never does anything without having a solid reason.” He said just as he parked the car at the underground parking of the hotel.”I know that. You wanna come in?” I got out and slammed the door.”Nahh, I’m gonna pass tonight. I have some work to turn in by Friday. Don’t want my boss giving me the ‘you ain’t doing the job I’m paying you for’ look.””I don’t have such look.” I said chuckling.”Uhh, yeah, you do.” He said.”Whatever.
I stood up and made my way to the door and there he stood. The man whom I intentionally broke his heart today. I hurt him and I wanna hate myself for it but I don’t.“Dixon!!” I called both their attention to myself. Dixon looked at me with heavy pleading eyes, he looked like he’s been stressing himself out too much.”McKenna, Princess, Please. I have to talk to you. It’s urgent.” He said.”It’s okay, Adeline. I got it.” My eyes focused on the owner of those mesmerizing grey eyes. Those captivating eyes belongs to an even more captivating man. His hair that looked as soft as a feather was styled messily on his head, his sharp jaw with a slight stubble made him look even more gorgeous. His cool grey eyes and the eyebrows that were scrunched together in concern and something else I couldn't point my finger on. The way his lips looked so pink, soft and luring me in. I felt my body tingling from just staring at him.”You sure? I can stay here if you want.”
The room suddenly became so silent that if a pin dropped, you'll have no problem hearing the sound. I've heard this before but why does it feel more real hearing it now? What are these feelings? As I stared at his eyes, for the first time in my life, I realized I want to keep staring at these mesmerizing orbs for as long as I'm permitted to."I told you I wasn't interested. I'm in love with Jason, I cant do that to you when I know deep within me that I'll always pick him." I said hoping to remind my heart of the truth. I watched as his eyes drooped in disappointment, he bent his head for a few seconds before looking back up."I know that but I've been friends with your family for years, I love your parents like they were mine. Don't do it cause of me, do it for them. I won't stand by and watch when I know something's wrong. I can't do it alone, I need your help." He said pleading with me with his eyes."Alright then. but..." My phone rang immediately cutting me
I took the elevator to the penthouse. Somehow, Ada seems to have disappeared from the lobby. I leaned my head to the cool wall of the elevator. Suddenly, I remember what transpired downstairs and a smile suddenly made its way to my face. I touched the cheek he kissed and I can swear I felt goosebumps all over my body. The elevator dinged indicating I have arrived on my floor. I stepped out and made my way to the house. I opened the door with my keys and entered."Adeline!!!! Are you here?""In the kitchen." She shouted back while I made my way to the kitchen. As I neared the kitchen, the sweet smell of the lasagna she was making filled the air. I entered to see her bent down placing the lasagna in the oven."What's with the cooking? You ordered Chinese food right before I ate." I said as I took my seat on the stand."Well, you left me here with nothing to do. I had to keep myself busy one way or the other. And for the food I ordered, I already ate all." S
A young girl of about 19 came up to our table after Dixon waved her over and glanced between us in curiosity. Her name tag read 'Megan', she's really pretty with her natural red hair and the freckles scattered all over her nose."Hello, I'm Megan. How can I help you today?" She asked with a pen and note in hand. I gave the menu a quick glance before deciding to go with the simple sausage egg sandwich."Can we get a plate of your Working Man's breakfast? I'll have some pancakes and bacon for myself." I opened my mouth to protest that I couldn't possibly eat that much but my stomach growled reminding me o the fact that I haven't eaten anything since I ate my Raspberry Swirl Loaf which I didn't even get to finish. I bit my lip and lowered my gaze in embarrassment."What would you like to drink, Princess?" Dixon asked, making me raise my head to look at him."I'll have a cappuccino, please." I told the waitress with a small smile. "Thank you."Once the wait
Third Person's POV.He sat down quietly beside the almost lifeless body of the young man. He watched as he took low steady breaths with the help of the tube attached to his nose that supplied oxygen to his lungs. He moved his eyes to the bruises on his arm that seemed to be healing already before redirecting his gaze to his face.He laughed at the helpless situation he's in. He loves this so much, it gives him an unspeakable joy. The victim's nurse, Sophia came in to check on her patient, she saw the mysterious man sitting beside her patient's bed and got confused on what he's doing there."Excuse me, sir but I don't think I've seen you around. Who let you in?" She asked with a clear look of confusion on her face. The man looked at her and smiled."I'm just visiting an old friend." He said standing up to leave. He adjusted his suit jacket and smiled at the nurse before finally leaving the room. Sophia watched the man's every move and shru
Third Person's POV.BANG!It all happened in a split second. Dixon had turned around with a frown on his face as McKenna ran straight at him. But just as she reached him, her body jolted back into him, taking the impact of the bullet. It was the bullet that was to take his life. She took the bullet for him.One of the officers took the gun from Trevor quickly as another shot him in the leg. He let out a scream in pain. Sophie ran into the room, curious as to what caused the noise.Simon stared at the woman that came in with shock evident on his face. What was she doing here dressed as an FBI agent, he thought to himself as they stared at each other. He opened his mouth to say something, but the other agents pushed him and the others out of the room."MCKENNA!" Dixon shouted as he wrapped his arms around her, who came toppling down. Her eyes were filled with pain and tears, enough to make her u
McKenna's POV.Crying is the act of shedding tears in response to an emotional state. But after a certain threshold, even the tears runs out.My tears had long run out, and yet another sun was on the verge of setting. Another sunset without Dixon's arms wrapped around me every night when we'd go to the balcony after dinner to watch the sun disappear on the horizon and how he'd pull me closer when we played games in the living room with Ian and Liam.It had become their thing. A tradition that we never miss. I remember how Dixon would rush through meetings to make it back home in time before the sky is painted in various hues of purples and oranges. He'd kiss me softly as the last hue of orange disappeared, and I remember feeling like the happiest girl in the world.Dixon.He would have noticed her missing by now. I can't even imagine the pain and worry that he and every other person will

Third Person's POV.Everyone turned to look at the young woman who walked in like she had no care in the world with Dixon's father. Sophie knew that her coming here was a big step. The guys were intelligent, they would've uncovered the truth by now, but they don't know her mission yet.David stopped in his tracks when he saw his son. The two stared at each other, one not believing his eyes and the other thinking he doesn't want to see him. David moved closer to his son as he enveloped him in a tight hug. He couldn't believe his son was back after everything that had happened. Dixon smiled a little when he saw the exchange. Even though his dad never admits it, he knew how much he missed Leo. Luke saw red, anger coursing through every vein in his body. Sophie was the one that kidnapped her. What the hell was she doing here?"What are you doing here? Where did you take Kenna?" Ian said, his voice dripping with anger and hatred. "Wh
McKenna's POV.I opened my mouth to say something, but no words could form. The pain shooting from the back of my head also isn't helping matters. I watched as she walked to Trevor and placed a chaste kiss on his lips."What are you doing? I don't want my girl thinking we have a thing." He turned to me, an innocent smile on his face, but I knew better. "Don't worry, baby. I'm all yours."What the hell is he saying? He ran his finger down my cheek to my neck. Itried fighting him off, but I couldn't. His touch made my skin crawl, and I did the next reasonable thing I could think of at that moment. I spat on his face.He closed his eyes, letting my saliva trail down the side of his face. He laughed as he wiped it off. My face turned to the side as a harsh slap landed on my cheek. Another kick landed on the side of my stomach, making my insides churn. I swallowed my tears. If they think they can brea
McKenna's POV.My body hurts. I could feel the pain shooting at every single muscle in my body, my head pounding and some liquid flowing down my face. My hand reached out to massage my throbbing temples trying to alleviate some of the pain, but frustration coursed through my body at the inability to move.'Ugh, my head hurts.'I slowly opened my eyes to see that I was in a dark room except for the light peeking through the small window at the top of the room. I looked around the room for a way out, but there's nothing except the window. What am I doing here? How did I get here? I can't remember anything. Think, Kenny. Think. The only thing I seem to remember was the restroom and Sophie. My eyes seem to widen as I finally realized what happened. Yes, Sophie brought me here."Sophie!!! Sophie!!!" I yelled at the top of my lungs. My head hurts, but I need to talk to her. I'm sure she has he
Dixon's POV.I feel so happy and complete sitting here with Leo like old times. Seeing my brother after so many years has fulfilled me in more ways than one."She's a keeper then?" He asked me some minutes after McKenna left for the restroom. I looked up at him and smiled."Yeah, she is.""I'm proud of you, baby bro. You have no idea how much pride and joy I felt whenever I see you on television.""That weirdly made me feel good." I laughed out. I watched as his countenance changed within seconds. I know that look. He's beating himself up again."I'm sorry, Dix. I should have been there for you when you needed me the most. I should have believed in you sooner. I should've known you're strong enough to fight the disease. I shouldn't have walked out on you that day. I shouldn't---""You really need to stop apologizing. It's all behind us now.
McKenna's POV.I stared at the building in front of me in disbelief. I can't believe Dixon brought me here. I took my eyes off the building to look at him. He had both hands in his pockets as he stared in concentration at the building."A rehabilitation center?"He shrugged his shoulders before moving closer to the building. I placed my hand on his biceps to stop him. I can't, for the life of me, understand why he brought me here."What are we doing here, Dixon? You said we were going somewhere. I didn't know you were bringing me to a rehab center?""You don't want to come? We could go back if you want. I only came because you promised to come with me." His eyes looked sad as he said that. My brain seemed to receive some signal as I remembered the promise I made him."It's okay. I'm sorry you went through all that. I could go with you if you don't mind."
McKenna's POV."Well, well, well. If it isn't my favorite cousin."Dixon turned to him, anger emitting from him as he squeezed my hand.I placed my hand on his biceps, giving it a little squeeze, to calm him down. I don't want him getting angry at this event. It's supposed to be our breath of fresh air considering everything we've been through recently."What do you want, Trevor?" Trevor sipped his drink like he had no care in the world. The disgusting smirk on his face irks me to my bone, making my skin crawl."Can't a man be happy for his cousin? I came to celebrate with you. Congratulations on opening a new office, Dix.""Don't you fucking dare call me that!! You have no right." I can see the vein on his neck at this point. He's angry. I just hope he doesn't have a tantrum again. I looked at the man standing in front of me. He had a nasty smirk on his face and a glass with whiskey in his hand. I can't
