Mira felt a small light lighting her path in the darkness. She wondered if she was being guided on the way to hell for her deeds. She stepped in the path lighted by the small light. She was ready… she deserved it….
Her life flashed past as she followed the small light engulfed in the darkness around her… Everything made sense to her. The seal that the wicked couple was talking about was not her father’s seal of authority as the ‘Head of Trade and Book of hereditary rights’ but the seal that belonged to the Zumerong estate. The Zumerong was one of the oldest and most prestigious families in the old world, but due to a political unrest, the family had to leave the city under the cover of the night some 15 years ago and no one had heard about them ever since.
The Zumerong seal was given to her father by his best friend who was the heir apparent to the estate for safe keeping until they returned. He didn’t want the seal to fall in the wrong hands if they met with trouble on their way. He had repeatedly told his best friend only to hand over the seal to the person who comes with the secret token which was a small glass bottle with a dried lily flower.
He also requested not to tell anyone what the secret token was until he passed away and then too, to only divulge this information to the keeper of the seal. Mira had heard this secret in passing while was serving at the table where Jason was getting her father drunk and enquiring about the seal. At that time, she was too ignorant and trusting of Jason and didn’t think too much of the line of questioning. He had told her that he was trying to establish a good relationship with her father by talking to him about what he cared about most, so that he wouldn’t object to them any further.
Mira’s lips curled up in disdain and self- ridicule as she passed through this memory ‘How stupid and blind was she? She really deserved to be tricked!’
As she walked the path of her life, she saw the treacherous couple tricking her with more of their lies, making her a puppet in their hands, talking her into stealing the quotes of contracts they were competing on from her husband, leading her by the nose to scam her husband into signing the extremely disadvantageous Lapstone bridge on behalf of the Slegh estate and crucifying him for the fall of the bridge that was built with low quality building materials. She watched her ex-husband bearing all responsibility exonerating her of any wrongdoing before king and country. She watched him being kicked out of his job and being jailed for 5 five years for harsh imprisonment. The imprisonment was revoked by the king after the Slegh’s notified in writing that they would pardon him. Why would the Slegh’s pardon him… no one knew!
She watched how she happily divorced him and ran into the arms of Jason. She watched in horror as he scammed her with a fake wedding certificate. Till now she didn’t know that the marriage she worked so hard for was just a fallacy…. She closed her eyes in pain… she didn’t have the strength to watch.
All the small and big details of her life flashed past her mind. She truly regretted her foolishness, but she was a woman who loved with every ounce of her being. She was ready to pay any price for her love…. the sad truth was her loyalties and affections were misplaced. She had wronged one too many good people. If there was a chance, she would pay her ex-husband and her family everything she owed them…. But sadly, everyone including herself had met with an untimely end…. She could only hope to make up for her stupidity in her next life.
Her family wasn’t famously rich or prestigious. Just an ordinary family with a slightly raised social status owing to her father’s position in court. But they had been smeared with dirt and lost miserably… all because of her misplaced love!
Painful as it was, Mira slowly opened her eyes as she gathered the strength to meet her maker. She was ready for judgement, ready for retribution; However, the path gradually started to brighten…. The darkness around her dissipated. She could hear a pained voice calling out to her to wake up. She knew this voice…. A voice she never thought she would have the fortune to hear again.
Jackson stared at the woman who was his wife and didn’t love him; the woman who demeaned and despised him at every possible chance she got; the woman who didn’t spare any effort to get away from him…. get divorced. The sad part was despite knowing everything he fell in love with this heartless woman.
Their marriage in the beginning was a debt he owed her stepmother. Slowly, he didn’t even know when, but his cold heart started melting… why? He didn’t know… maybe it was his belief in the constitution of marriage… maybe it was his admiration towards her steadfast loyalty even though he was not the recipient…. maybe it was her charm… She wasn’t a breathtaking beauty, but she had a charm; a charm that grew like a vine… till it covered all of your heart and soul.
Jackson stopped talking and turned his face away as he saw the eyelids flutter. He knew she was about to wake up. No matter how desperate he was… he would save this little bit of face for himself.
Mira opened her eyes to see Jackson who was waiting by her bedside. She could not believe herself …. Was this afterlife? Was he still waiting for her? But… something didn’t seem to add up. Why did this look like a healer’s room? Did someone save her? But then, why was Jackson here? She had seen the men bury him … a possibility rushed to her head…. Something she had read from Ursula’s stash of books a long time ago…. Was she reborn? Did she travel back in time? Was she given a second chance?
Jackson watched the myriad of emotions that flashed past her eyes without interrupting. He was waiting for her to calm down even though he didn’t know the reason behind her emotions. Mira’s mind was reeling rapidly through her previous life incidents to place herself into this timeline. That’s right, she was brought to a healer’s room for trying to kill herself in an attempt to force him to agree to null the marriage 3 months after their marriage and she had almost succeeded. If she was right, then he would tell her now that he was in agreement to make the marriage null and all the parchments that she had given him were signed and at the bedside table. These parchments were required to be given to the mayor to evict each other of responsibility of the other; She waited patiently as she stared back at him. She didn’t know if her theory was right… so she decided to wait.
Sure enough, after 10 minutes of staring at each other, Jackson sighed!
“You don’t have to do this ever again. I am okay to null this marriage since living with me is worse than death for you.” Jackson spoke each word gritting his teeth.
“The parchments you bought the other day, I have signed them, and it is here.” Jackson spoke against his will and pointed to the bedside table. He stood up to leave as there was no point in him being here anymore. He had done what needed to be done.
“Don’t….” Mira stretched her hand hurriedly and caught his hand stopping him.
Jackson turned around and raised his eyebrows skeptically.
“I …. I…I…” Mira bit her lips “I don’t want to null the marriage anymore.”
Jackson’s face looked like he had been electrified… but the next minute his lips curled up in ridicule as he heard the rest of her words-
“But only if you don’t want to null the marriage as well once you hear what I have to say.” Mira spoke softly as she remembered the reason behind Jason’s fury. He hated her to death once he came to know of her cheating on him. If he, whom she loved so dearly could hate so much after hearing that she cheated, what about Jackson whom she knew for only 3 months?
She wanted a second chance but on fair grounds. She could make amends, protecting him from the dark like he did in their past life. This was why she made the decision even though she knew that the worst case was he would tell everyone, and she would treated as monster, caged and torn apart in the royal physician’s room or worse yet classed as witch and burnt alive… but it was a risk she wanted to take. One that would guarantee her a chance to love…. a risk that was well worth it according to her books!
“Is there something you were going to say?” Jackson perked his eyebrows as he saw the myriad of emotions flashing.
“Can you lock the door?”
Jackson shrugged; the ridicule on his face not reducing even by a smidgen, but he still closed and locked the door.
“I am terrified of what will happen if you decide against me after you hear what I am about to tell you.” Mira took a deep breath gathering every ounce of will power that she could muster “not just your decision but also …. Hah!!” Mira sighed as she sat up leaning against the headboard.
“You must think that I just woke up…right?” Mira looked like she was about to hang herself.
“I have been here since we bought you to the healer.” Jackson pursed his lips.
“I know…” Mira nodded despondently “This might sound crazy but there is no nice way, so I am just going to say it.”
“I have been here and done this.” Mira paused “I have walked this journey once and made a terrible mistake. I have cheated you and misused your position in charge of the Slegh estate. We got divorced and you were disgraced and thrown out of the estate. I finally married or thought I got married to Jason. I was then tricked, tortured, violated by their henchmen and killed by them. Well not exactly killed by them…” Mira bit her lips as she corrected herself “I killed myself so that they couldn’t get their way.”
“In this future of yours” Jackson couldn’t help himself laughing in ridicule but still continued once he managed to hold his laughter “What happened to me after I was kicked out?”
Mira lowered her head regretfully and spoke in a low voice “You got killed trying to save to me from four hired crooks just before they violated me.”
“Ha…ha….ha….ha…” Jackson laughed “You think I was bested by four crooks?”
“Yes…. because you were drugged by Lotta.” Mira spoke in a muffled voice; she didn’t raise her head.
“Lotta???” Jackson frowned. He didn’t even know who that was.
“She is one of the maids at Slegh. She likes you and had also moved close to your place once you were kicked out. I am not sure of the details.”
“She likes me??” Jackson’s smile became wider “How come I don’t know her?”
“She is the one who brings you tea and snacks.” Mira spoke in a sour tone.
Jackson pursed his lips which were curling upwards. For some reason he felt the sourness in her tone sounded like music to his ears.h
“Alright. Let’s say that I believe your hocus pocus.” Jackson kept his eyes on her eyes “What is it that you want to ask me?”
“Do you …. I mean…. Do you still want to be married to me?” Mira lowered her eyes. She didn’t have the courage to keep looking into his. ‘What if she saw disgust in them?’
“Why did you ask this?” Jackson raised her chin forcing her to look into his eyes.
“I…. I… want to know what your choice will be knowing what I know. I don’t want to take advantage….” Mira blinked innocently. She didn’t have any schemes. Her eyes were clear.
“You should know the answer… if what you said is true.” Jackson stared intently into her eyes.
“Jason and I have been in love ever since we were ten years old. He started hating me after Alina, my best friend told him about an affair with someone that didn’t happen.” Mira lowered her eyes suppressing the pain and hatred in her heart.
“You… you don’t know me much now…. If you want to leave knowing what I really did… then….” Mira raised her head to stare back into his eyes “knowing that I came back after I was tricked…. I will respect that.”
Jackson sighed; He couldn’t see the scheming in her eyes, they were clear as day.
“You said that Jason hated you due to a lie…. why don’t you go back and clear it for him? Wouldn’t you get your happily ever after?” He asked against his will.
“I didn’t do anything to let him down….” Mira didn’t look away this time “He should have known better than to convict me without asking me. You on the other hand, I did cheat and had every reason to hate me….” Mira sighed and shook her head.
Jackson pursed his lips. He didn’t know whether to believe or not. He had also read about rebirth and reincarnation in ancient texts…. But they were all myths…. No one had ever reported or seen anyone proof.“I don’t want you to make a hasty decision.” Mira smiled. “I will give you a small proof.”Jackson raised his eyebrows skeptically; it would be a lie to say that his interest was not aroused.“Give me the parchments, unlock the door and hide behind the curtain. Don’t make a sound.” Mira’s lips hooked up with a knowing smile “If I am not mistaken, Jason should be coming in anytime. He will come in apologizing for all the pain he put me through.”Jackson felt that her smile was becoming brighter and more charming. He stared half dazed in her smile.“He will pretend to be very happy when I tell him about you agreeing to null the marriage but then become sorrowful as he tells me that this was not right time and that he finally has a chance to be appointed as one of the advisors at the
On the way back, Mira told Jackson that she wanted to stop by the village supply shop and buy something for his aunt and family. She had borrowed some money from her father but didn’t tell him.“Let’s do it another day.” Jackson couldn’t wait to get home and be alone with his wife. The other reason was, he didn’t have enough money in his pocket. Everything he had saved up for the month was used up for her at the healer’s place.“That’s okay…. Just a quick look…. Please…. please….” Mira blinked pitifully.“Alright.” Jackson couldn’t bear to refuse. He planned to ask the shop keeper to open a borrower’s account for him. This was common in this era. Most people would have this sort of borrower’s account against their household with the supply shop, the butcher, the milkman and so on… There were only few individuals who could pay as soon as they bought something, others would pay it off slowly or when they got their wages or sold their harvest.Mira also wanted to look at the items in the
Jackson went to the nearby woods to get some wood as soon as they got home. He had to solve the problem to the hen’s cage since they had already bought the hen.Mira started to prepare supper. It was nothing special. Just some roasted vegetables and porridge. That was all they had.Mira sat thinking about how she could make money while the porridge cooked. She remembered how she had learned to sew in her past life after she divorced Jackson and had gotten married to Jason. At that time, it was more a passing fancy for her to kill time as Jason was never home; he was always meeting up with people in the big city and at the king’s court.Heh! She was too naïve… he must have been holed up with Alina. Mira shook her head to free herself of the thoughts of the vicious couple. Thinking back to the sewing lessons she learnt, she didn’t know if she had really learnt anything worthwhile. She had to try to see if it was any good. She was very good at embroidery… Ursula had taught her well since
Jackson slowed his pace for Mira as they walked to the collection point for the carriage. The usual 5 minutes’ walk took them 15 minutes, but they still had plenty of time before the carriage departure. Being early meant they got a seat in a comfortable position in the carriage.Jackson usually did not waste money on carriage ride. He would walk; it would take him an hour and a half to get to his office in the Slegh estate following the shortcut through the fields and streams. But today, since Mira was coming along, he decided to splurge and take the carriage. It would cost him 3 silver pieces each.Mira handed 20 pieces of silver to Jackson as she knew he didn’t have any money on him. She left the 30 pieces with her as she wanted to see if she could find something in town to make money.“Sleep. I will wake you when we get there.” Jackson put his arm around her shoulders pulling her into his embrace. He knew she was tired. The trip to the city in the carriage would take an hour.Mira
Jackson felt a heartache as he saw all the stuff, she bought but he didn’t have the heart to scold her. He only sighed inwardly as they walked to the carriage pick up point. They sat in the carriage quietly on the way back. Mira gave Jackson the buns she bought for him and dozed off as she was really tired. Jackson’s lips curled up as he ate the buns his wife bought for him. He was really hungry as all he ate since morning was the half egg and slice of bread at breakfast. He woke her up when they reached the stop near their home. He carried all the items while Mira carried the basket with needles and threads from the corner shop.“Let me tell you an exciting news….” She paused as she remembered the money she spent and sighed “Actually there is one good news and one bad. Which do you want to hear first?”“Bad news.” Jackson pursed his lips. He didn’t want to hear as he thought she was going to tell him that she regretted her choice and wanted to go back on her word to live a good life
“You’re here.” Almera smiled as she saw Mira waiting at the door.“Um.” Mira nodded.Almera invited her into the office and poured a cup of tea.“No one else has come?” Mira looked around curiously. The last time she came. It was earlier than this but there was a doorman at the door and a few salespeople at the front.“Friday is a day everyone starts late.” Almera smiled amiably as she sipped her tea.“What brings you back so soon?”“I finished the work you gave me. So, I wanted to check if it meets your satisfaction, or you wanted me to change anything.”“Finished?” Almera hooked her eyebrows suspiciously.Mira quietly took the completed cloth and placed it on the table for Almera to inspect along with the unused thread “I didn’t use the brown as I changed my mind. The others are…” Mira paused as she smiled sheepishly “I didn’t know how much I would need so I unwound them for washing… so they look a bit unkempt, but I swear they are not dirty.” Mira completed awkwardly in a low voice
Mira proudly handed her pouch to Jack as soon as they reached home.“You should keep it.” Jack pressed it back into her hand. “It is the wife’s job to take care of these affairs.”“Really?” Mira asked skeptically.“That’s how my parents did it.” Jack shrugged as a matter of fact and then pulled his pockets inside out “I don’t have any money now. But when I do, it will be yours to keep.”“I made you a pauper, didn’t I?” Mira lowered her head guiltily. She knew he had to take out all his money and also take a loan to buy this place.“I think it is a good thing.” Jack held her waist with one hand and with the other, lifted her face with a cheeky smile “Don’t we have our love nest ready for us?”“You… you…” Mira pouted as she gently hit him with her fists on his chest.“Let’s make the most of it.” Jack chuckled as he lowered his head and captured her lips. He deepened the kiss and ravished her senses, riding the storm with her all the way from the front room to their bedroom. Jack pulled
“What were you doing?” Mira asked curiously as they sat for breakfast.“You’ll see …. Soon.” Jack smiled as he poured her hot water.“Alright.” Mira didn’t ask further. She would wait for him to show her.“What should we eat for dinner?” Mira pouted as he nibbled the meat bun in relish.“What do you want?” Jack raised his eyebrows.“Can we go fishing?” Mira asked with an expectant sparkle.“Um” Jack nodded.“Then you finish what you are doing, and I will prepare some stuff for the fish.” Mira cleared the table as she spoke.“Um” Jack nodded as he walked out the door.An hour later, Mira had finished the preparation and also packed a basket with dinner which was a pot of tea, boiled eggs and a few slices of bread when Jack walked in “Wife, come take a look.”Mira followed him curiously. In the second bedroom was a beautiful stand with the height of a slightly tall table, her slate frame resting on it in a perfect fit.“Good Lord.” Mira shrieked in excitement as she circled inspecting t
Once the king and the supreme rulers had taken the seats in the chamber of secrets, the chiefs of each governing body in the country entered for their private meeting with the king once their names were called out by the royal messenger. This solemn ceremony was the rite of passage where the new king is entrusted as the keeper of ancient secrets of the country from its inception, things that were for the king’s ears only. The other curious thing was no two chiefs entered at the same time. Each had only knowledge of the matter they were entrusted with. The only living person in the entire kingdom who had knowledge of all the secrets was the king and the supreme rulers. The rite passage ceremony went on till late through the night. No matter how anxious Cornelius was to get to his godson and blast the hell out of the household of Southamberston, he had to wait for the next day.The next day, Jack called everyone to the study very early in the morning. No one thought much of it till they
“What wrong?” Jack asked as he smoothed the frown adorning his wife’s beautiful face as they sat in the carriage on their way back to the Southamberston estate.Mira shook her head to indicate it was nothing although the confusion on her face didn’t disappear.“What is it that troubles my wife?” Jack tilted her chin to face him “Something is bothering you from the time of the crowning ceremony.”Mira raised her eyebrows in surprise. She never expected Jack to notice. She thought he was distracted by everything around them and that she had covered it well.“Nothing can distract me from you.” Jack chuckled looking at his wife’s silly expression.“Smooth talker.” Mira pouted as she rested back in his embrace although her heart felt it was dipped in honey. It was a blissful feeling to know that the person you loved also had only you in their eyes.“What is it?” Jack wasn’t going to give up without an answer.“Nothing… it’s just…” Mira bit her lips hesitating whether to speak but decided to
Thomas and Jack looked at their wives who were giggling foolishly and shook their heads helplessly. Thomas introduced Jack to the other gentry helping him build connections while the ladies gossiped. The hot topic for the ladies was of course, the fabulous gown that Mira and Almera were wearing. Everyone wanted to know where the materials were purchased and how long it would take to get them made.Matthew and Harry mingled with old acquaintances introducing their wives and John. Martin and Oden stood politely by their side. Both felt extremely awkward and overwhelmed as they had never attended such an affair in their lifetime although Oden kept a calm façade given his training at Slegh’s.Joan stood in the periphery of the hall with Emma staring viciously at their family that was dressed like the nobles, enjoying everyone’s admiration. Joan couldn’t understand why she had to stand in a corner forgotten even though she carefully planned for herself to rise to prominence. She couldn’t st
Cornelius’s eyes narrowed as he spotted Harrison behind Jack before sighing in a whisper “Kids! Didn’t we tell them to keep it quiet?”He turned to signal Parker as he realized that there was only Harrison following Jack. Of course, he knew Harrison represented the Hariebot’s and thereby Jack’s maternal home.“Wasn’t the edict awarding the dukedom passed on to Southamberston?”“Yes, your royal supreme majesty.” Parker bowed respectfully.“Then why isn’t the butler here to receive and guide the lord?” Cornelius’s temper rose “I need an explanation for this arrogance. I will visit the duchy after the feast. I want to see who dares?”“There…. There….” Aglaya gently tapped on Cornelius hand “Let’s deal with it later. Don’t spoil the festivities with your temper.”“Haiiii” Cornelius sighed before sitting back.Orseus hooked his eyebrows towards Bernard as he noted the change in his parents’ expression. Bernard shrugged before turning to look at his father for an explanation. Parker blinked
Similar to the sacred hall, everyone gathered in the grand hall according to their status. However, unlike the ceremony in the sacred hall not everyone attended. It was attended only by those who had an invitation among the freemen and servants.Jack and his entourage walked into the hall under the lead of Harrison and Lazarus to the section reserved for the Southamberston. Joan and Emma watched as they saw their family walking through the crowd unhindered under the protection of the Southamberston guards first with wide open mouths and then slowly gritted their teeth in resentment as they thought of their plight where they were waiting in the crowd.Emma clenched her fists as she threw a resentful glare at Joan whom she decided was the cause of all her misery; if it were not for Joan, she would be the one wearing that beautiful gown and walking through the crowd with her head held high, attracting the envy of the crowd. Joan did not notice the resentment in Emma’s gaze as she wasn’t i
“By this holy oil and the power bestowed on me by the ancestors and your Royal father, I anoint you as king of Hal from this moment forth” The chief of the elder priests poured the holy oil using the ceremonial spoon on Orseus’s head. The elders of each adorned him with golden spurs and armills. The grand dukes along with Knight commander Parker Hemmington knelt on the ground raising the four swords above the heads pledging their allegiance once the Elders finished and stepped aside. Each of the elders, blessed the sword and passed it finally to the chief elder; each time the chief elder would raise the sword and present it to Orseus who was seated on the high throne proclaiming-“With the swords of righteousness, do justice, protect the faith of the ancestors, help and defend widows and orphans, restore the things that are perishing due to our negligence, maintain that which have been restored by the life force of your ancestors, punish and reform what is unjust all the while upholdin
Jack and his team made their way to their position in the procession. Everyone was excited. This was their first time participating in the procession. Anne-Marie could help but keep looking at the bear within the sun printed on the smock. This was the only differentiating factor in the smocks. Every smock had the insignia of the duchy printed within the country flag which was painted on the front and back of the smock. Not even Matthew and Harry had attended one of these events. The previous king didn’t have a coronation, he upsurged the throne in anger. The coronation before that was more than 50 years ago and the ones who could remember the event could be counted on fingers as the event was not open to everyone. In the past, the coronation was only attended by the nobility. This was one of Cornelius’s reforms even though he never had a coronation; Everyone citizen, noble, freeman or slave could attend the coronation. In line with the past traditions, the bells at the clock tower rang
The arrangement for the coronation ceremony was slightly different from previous years to increase efficiency. In the previous years, the elite of the society met in the palace hall and joined the procession after breakfast. This year, the palace guards formed 20 parking stations and associated tents for the nobility and 20 parking stations with tents for commoners although the facilities in the tent were not comparable to that of nobility; Each carriage that would park at any one of these stations where the palace guards would provide the smocks in the color identifying their social status. The concept of wearing this head-to-toe smock was to represent the flag which was the rising sun. The royal family and their household would be wearing golden smocks; similarly, the grand dukes and their household would be wearing orange, the dukes and their household would be amber, the lords would be yellow mixed with amber, nobles, scholars, merchants of high status in bright yellow, commoners i
“I am afraid I have to disappoint you.” Thomas’s lips curled up as he remembered his banter with Mira. “Your Grace is being modest.” Ecky shook his head in denial as he thought ‘No one would be able to match his master’. Thomas chuckled as he let Ecky help him dress. Although he was no longer in a panic to rush to Almera’s side, he still got ready hurriedly. He had figured out the reason for her scream, now it was more out of curiosity… curious what shock Mira had given his wife. Almera had just finished dressing and walked into the main lounge when she saw Thomas staring at her in a daze like a fool. “Who stole my husband’s soul?” Almera giggled as she walked up to him. Who didn’t like to see undisguised admiration and infatuation in their lover’s eye? “The enchantress is before me…” Thomas whispered as he hugged Almera’s waist claiming sovereignty “But I will be gladly held captive by her for all eternity.” “Someone’s got their mouth in the honey jar... Tsk…. tsk…” Almera feign
