Jack milked the cows before setting off to work. He drank a glass of milk and ate bread, leaving the house a little earlier than he usually did. Mira had given him a jug to give at his aunt’s place before going to work. Mira sat at her desk working on the pattern she had in her mind. She had finished the top yesterday. It was a floral pattern with the reflective parts making the petals of a fully open flower that were lined with the copper thread and a beautiful half-closed flower shaded with the brilliant, red and copper thread. The vines were done with olive green and this pattern extended from the neckline to slightly below the bust. The waist was left plain creating an illusion of a full bust and thin waist. The skirt was patterned to be a fully rounded skirt and the embroidery covering every inch. Jack’s day was not any different to his usual routine. Just as he was about to get off work, the supervisor informed him that there was an aggrieved woman anxiously looking for him. Ja
Mira had finally completed embroidering the work that she had designed on Tuesday. This was her first completed design. She did a copy of the pattern on a small coarse linen cloth and kept as a keepsake. She giggled as she thought of a name for her design ‘garden of love’. She started her next work seeing there was plenty of time for Jack to come home. As per her agreement with Almera, she looked at the watch and started marking the time on her cloth. She had to get a small parchment on her next trip to the city. Time went quickly without any incidents till the next day. Mira had got up to take a break from her morning work. She didn’t know why, but she felt like she had to lock her work room. She locked the door as she always followed her intuition. She went to the kitchen to bake bread and some pork soup for Jack's supper. She hummed a little song to herself as she worked. A low thud was heard from the direction of the side gate. Mira’s heart skipped a beat. The dogs or rather pu
“I need space.” The minute Mira thought about it, she was pulled in. She looked around. Even though it was dark outside, the space here was well lit up, bright as day. She walked around calling out “Anybody here?” “Anyone home?” “Does this place belong to anyone?” “Does anyone know how I got here?” Only silence greeted her; Mira sat down pouting. “This is your space.” She heard a faint whisper once she quieted down. Mira raised her head and looked up. She was an apparition of an elderly woman. “You…. you… a ghost?” Mira asked in fear. “Ghost??” The elderly woman laughed “I wouldn’t know.” “Who are you?” Mira asked once her heart calmed. “I am one of the guardians of time and space.” “How?? I???” Mira lowered her head. She knew but she didn’t know… “You are not meant to be here. You and I know that.” The old lady chuckled. “Are you here to take me back?” Mira asked in a low voice; sadness clouding her heart. She didn’t live long with Jack… she wanted to grow old with him…
They ate the buns that Almera packed for them as they rode back. This had become their norm. Almera didn’t bother her to eat. She understood that Mira wanted to hurry back home. They returned the cart early and walked to the supply shop. Mira told Jack about Aldrin’s request. Jack nodded. Mira had only 3 gold coins and 20 silver pieces in loose change but that was plenty for them. They had shopped with just 50 silver pieces. Mira stocked up on all the vegetables, a barrel of ale, 2 lots of herb pouches and even treated themselves to two small barrels of wine. She did feel a heartache as she gave Joe a gold coin and received 50 silver pieces. She muttered to herself “It’s alright. We are working hard to live a good life.” Jack chuckled. How could he not understand his money grubber wife? Once they reached home, Mira followed Jack into the woods after they kept the 2 gold sheets in the locker. She wanted to look for mushrooms. Jack started chopping after asking her not to go far. Mir
They rushed back; Mira washed the furs clean while Jack watered the plants. Just like before, Mira flung it into space. “Husband, would the supply shop have alum?” Mira asked as they walked to go to her parents’ place. “What’s alum?” Jack had never heard of it. “It’s like a white powder that is used for …” Mira thought for a while before saying, “cleaning fur.” She pouted and muttered “That the only use I know.” “Don’t know.” Jack shrugged “Joe usually has a bit everything.” “Can we take a quick look?” “Um” Strangely, Joe did have it. She bought a small bag of salt and alum. Each cost 10 silver pieces each. Joe only had a bag of Alum; Let’s just say it was not a popular item in their countryside. They set off to Mira’s parents place as soon as they finished at Joe’s. This time, they took a carriage ride as they were both tired. 10 silver pieces poorer! “Mom, dad, we are here” Mira announced as they entered. “Come… come…” Matthew was always happy to see his little girl. “Dad,
Jack and Oden chopped the remaining wood that he had bought back from the woods while Martin stacked them to the side of the house. “So, what happened?” Oden asked; the haze in his heart had disappeared as he saw Jack and Mira interacting. “You remember that bastard Mira used to like” Jack kept his eyes on the kitchen door as he spoke in a low voice. “What about him?” Martin asked in annoyance. “He came here three days ago.” Jack told them everything and how he found Mira hiding in a corner shivering with fear “The bastard wanted to use her to create a scandal so that I will lose my selection at that court position.” “He has some skill. You should have seen the crowd here when I got home.” Jack’s voice was filled with disdain. “No wonder, Mira wouldn’t open today.” Oden nodded thoughtfully. “Bastard, he dares to scheme against us brothers?” Martin was furious “We should teach this bastard a lesson.” “Someone already did.” Oden smirked; He was the apprentice of the Slegh’s man o
Mira finished mixing and started to rub the furs in the water mixed with powders. “Can you bring the wooden spoon you made?” Jack bought it out for her to look. Mira touched the edges to make sure it was smooth without a single bristle sticking out. “Here, stir the one we did in the morning.” Mira handed him the spoon. “Hubby make a small cage for them so that they can untie and store the rabbits.” Mira felt sorry for the little guys that were staring at her. “Um” Mira went inside to prepare the meat. She smeared it spices and butter like she did yesterday. Looking at the rabbit, she had an idea. She quickly boiled some potatoes. While the potato was getting boiled, she quickly cut some onions and put them in the spider pan to fry; She looked around and entered space after confirming no one was around. She quickly picked some of the mushrooms she stored earlier and came out after carefully looking around. She chopped the mushrooms and fried it. She mixed this with some of the nut
“We will leave the cage here.” Oden spoke after being silent for a while. “Huh?” Mira looked at him in confusion. “We will be troubling cousin as we will come and get one or two for supper or dinner every day.” Oden smiled. “If we take the cage and one of the other tenants see them, we have to give it to the Sleghs if they come looking.” Oden explained seeing Mira’s confused gaze. “Everything we have is a loan. We are servants of the Sleghs.” Oden had a helpless expression. “If we take this and we have to hand it over to the Sleghs, then we will be disrespecting cousins’ good intention.” “This way, they can’t find fault with us.” Oden was prudent in his thoughts and actions. “In that case, no problem. Come and take whenever you please.” Mira smiled as she leaned on Jack. “We better get going or mom’s going to worry.” “Um” Jack and Mira walked them to the edge of the road and waved goodbye. Mira went stirred both sets of furs again before putting the pails in the outer shed and
Oden never knew that a man of business’s life was so busy. The pace at Slegh’s that he was used to, was relaxed and leisurely in a polite language…. if one was perfectly honest, then they would call it sloppy. His admiration for Carl grew as he watched and learned. Even though he was swept off his feet, Oden didn’t slack even for a second. He knew his cousin was destined for bigger things and he couldn’t drag him down. Even with the limited resources he had, his cousin and wife managed to build what they had today, what would happen in future now that they had the resources of dukedom? He was their big cousin; he had to shield them in his own way… and the only way was to grow stronger.Martin was busy with winding up all his tasks at the smithery and also his new hobby that he hadn’t disclosed to anyone…. this was his little secret. Luckily, everyone was run of their feet, and no one noticed. Beth wasn’t idle either. She was busy supervising the maids with the meals for everyone. It w
Jason regretted letting go of Mira. The moment he saw her receiving the title of duchess, he realized how foolish he was to listen to Alina and cast the diamond in his hands away for trash. The moment he heard Mira ask in open court for the title to be bestowed equally on her and Jack, he felt that someone had forcefully snatched something that belonged to him. Regret played somersaults inside his head as his mind relayed the scenes of Mira shining like a star during the awards ceremony.Soon his mind started devising plans to reclaim what was originally his. He didn’t believe that he couldn’t snatch Mira away from that poor simpleton. He didn’t put Jack in his eyes at all…. He forgot that Jack’s identity was no longer that of a simpleton. He was after all her first love, and she had even tried to take her own life to be with him… He conveniently forgot how she had scorned him on the last few encounters. Even if he remembered, his ego would have put it down to her being angry and woul
After returning from the city, Mira got busy with completing her embroideries. First, she completed the work on Matthew’s coat and breeches. The breeches were simple with an inch wide embroidery on the knee bands. She did the same pattern for John and Harry using the same thread combination- silver and royal blue metallic threads to embroider a floral vine pattern along the front line, vents, collar, cuffs pockets and flaps of the navy-blue material and knee bands for the breeches. The same pattern was done for the three cravats on the portion of the cravat that would adorn the front of the knot. The silver blue material for the three waist coats was entirely covered by a small pattern called droguet using royal blue and aqua blue metallic threads. The only twist between the three sets were the flowers; this was the same as their female counterparts- Harry’s had magnolia flowers while Matthew’s were Fuchsia flowers; John’s were tulips. The pattern for Oden and Martin was the replica of
Martha and Sierra were next to enter, brightening Mira’s mood. She forgot all about the unpleasant lady. She started the conversation with the normal pleasantries while Jack sat back to give her space.“Can I ask if you know a Mr Baldos?” Mira asked feigning anxiety before hurriedly apologizing “I apologize if I offended you… but I can’t help asking since your name is Martha.”“You….. you….” Martha stuttered as she looked suspiciously with fear.“I mean no harm” Mira feigned regret “Baldos is a friend and I promised him to take care of his lady friend, but all I know of her is that her name is Martha.”“I have been asking this question to every Martha I meet since Baldos passed away.” Mira sighed.“No…. no… I … I didn’t…” Martha shook her head. She didn’t know what to say. She didn’t want to offend anyone, especially if it was Baldos friend.“It’s okay.” Mira sighed regretfully “I will keep searching.”“No… no… I … I mean I am …” Martha explained looking uncomfortable. She didn’t know
“Since she like serving men poisoned with potions of seduction and lust, I think she should experience it at least once.” Mira pursed her lips and clenched her fists.“We will do as you say.” Jack agreed with a doting smile.“I think she should do it for a lifetime since she likes it so much.” Almera rolled her eyes.Thomas’s lips curled in an admiring arc. This was exactly what he wanted to do. They discussed what to do next before splitting up.Mira and Jack followed their original plan and went to the apartment area. Carl and Oden were waiting dutifully after the purchase was completed. They got on the carriage as they rode on to the apartment. Carl informed Jack of the owner’s interest in selling the remaining apartments. He also provided his view of business prospects and waited for Jack’s decision.“Cost?” Jack pursed his lips as he deliberated.“The current apartment was bought for 50 nuggets. The surrounding 4 apartments are also priced at the same value however if we are able
Mira entered space after everyone left for their day’s work. Today she had to finish the work for her mother and godmother. She didn’t have to think long for her mom and godmother’s pattern. For her mom’s cloth the pattern was the floral pattern of fuchsia flowers that were bright red with shades of a dark red and a shade of pink darker than the rosewood color for the inside bulb with hovering hummingbirds, the Fiery-throated hummingbird and the Crowned Woodnymph variety which were her mom’s favorite among all the hummingbirds.Mira finished the work on her mother’s cloth and stretched before leaving space. She didn’t want to worry Jack. She had learned her lesson yesterday. Harrison was dutifully waiting for her in the dining room wondering whether he should call her. A smile appeared on his face as she appeared as if his dilemma was resolved.Mira had a quick lunch after Harrison informed her that both her aunt and uncle had asked her not to wait for them at dinner as they would stop
“She must be working.” Jack shook his head helplessly and explained as he saw that the worry written all over Harrison’s face was genuine “She tends to forget time when she concentrates.”“Wife...” Jack called out as he knocked on the door.Mira had just completed Aunt Beth’s pattern when she heard Jack’s voice. She came out of space and opened the door happily only to see Jack frowning and Harrison’s anxious face. Seeing the light outside had faded, Mira blinked with a silly mischievous grin as realization hit her…. An entire day had passed!Jack really wanted to scold Mira, but he couldn’t say a word of reprimand as he saw her silly grin.“You are not allowed to do this.” Jack shook his head helplessly and spoke in a gentle tone as he pulled her into his embrace.“Um” Mira readily nodded.“Next time...” Jack tilted his head to look at Mira with a serious gaze; Mira didn’t let him continue. She jumped to cover his mouth and shook her head hurriedly “No next time….”“I … I will get the
Jack and Oden followed Carl the next day to familiarize themselves with the different businesses of the estate. Mira literally locked herself in her work room designing the dresses. She made an agreement with Almera to deliver the embroidered materials for the dresses of her mother, godmother, Aunty Beth and Anne-Marie first followed by the embroidered materials her father, godfather, Uncle John, Big Cousin and Cousin. The next batch would be for embroidered materials for Jack and Thomas; theirs would be the last.John busied himself with the cattle and rabbits while Anne-Marie spent all day with Dax. No one was happier than her. Beth wanted to make herself useful but there was nothing for her to do. The kitchen was basically manned by Harrison and the 2 maids. She wanted to find Mira and ask what she should do but Mira was nowhere to be found. She decided to harvest the spinach and other vegetables. John joined her once he finished his work with the cattle. They looked at each other a
The king’s men actions were swift. It took them a day to find the truth behind Jack’s drugging event and submit their report. Meanwhile, the Slegh’s gathered in the old master’s study to discuss counter measures. Old master Slegh rubbed his chest uncomfortably as he listened to his sons quibbling.“Father, the only solution is to give up on Lotta.” Cole decided to be the devil’s advocate. Cain frowned; It wasn’t that he had any love for the bastard, but his intuition told him that Lotta was just the tip of the iceberg.“What are your thoughts?” Old master Slegh looked towards Cain. Caster and Cole followed the old master’s gaze.“Somehow, I doubt that will be enough.” Cain shook his head as he slowly lifted his face “Father, do you think it’s old debts catching up with new ones?”“What old debts??” Old master Slegh furiously tapped his walking stick on the ground “Don’t speak carelessly.” His fury shut their mouths but not their doubts, which danced all over their faces in the form o
