“Husband, I want to go to that cloth merchant’s shop.” Mira tugged Jack’s hand acting like a spoilt child.

“I just remembered something…. Please…” Mira pouted and blinked with a pleading gaze.

“Um”

“Let’s go now.” Mira ran to the room to change and take the money.

They hired the cart from their usual cart person. He was about to go home disappointedly since he didn’t get a single ride when Jack and Mira rushed up to him.

Jack rode fast as Mira kept urging him; He had no idea what she wanted to do, but he was happy to comply. He could see the excitement in her eyes.

“You’re back.” Stranton smiled before teasing “4 weeks are up… only 4 more weeks for our bet.”

“Yes” Mira smiled mysteriously as she walked into the section for fine linen. She chose one pista-green and sky-blue. She turned to Jack “Brown or grey?”

“For whom?” Jack raised his eyebrows with a knowing smirk.

“Brown or grey?” Mira asked with a pout.

“Brown for big bro and Martin, Grey for uncle.” Jack chuckled.

Martin came in the evening as usual. He bought the chains as always. Mira came out as she heard Martin’s voice. “Cousin’s wife.” Martin raised his head as he saw Mira “Cousin just told me about what happened in the morning.” Mira shrugged. “Is all your work spoiled?” Martin asked anxiously. Mira stared from Martin to Jack with a blank gaze before realizing that Jack didn’t tell him about the back-up “I need your help with something.” Mira decided to change the topic; She didn’t want to lie to family. She didn’t know how Jack managed to pull wool over his head, but she knew Jack wouldn’t lie. “What is it?” Martin asked eagerly. “It might require you to do something bad.” Mira pouted with a conflicted expression. “Like??” “Stealing...” Mira pursed her lips. Martin took a deep breath as he made up his mind “I will do it… what should I steal?” “Are you tired?” Mira quirked her eyebrows “I need it today.” “Okay” Martin stood up. “Can you steal a dress of your mom’s and Anne-Ma

  • Second chance at happiness   Idiots could be found everywhere!

Jack and Mira woke up together. Mira got breakfast ready while Jack milked the cows and let the animals out. He ate breakfast before going to get the cart. Today was the day they used the cart for free, but Jack insisted on paying a full day’s wage as he needed it for the whole day. He told the cart owner that he would use the free ride next week. Mira pushed the stands from space into the front room as she got ready for Jack to return with the cart. Jack loaded all the stands and took the milk to deliver at his uncle’s place. Mira handed him a small cloth with measurements for her mother and godmother, the sample dresses of Beth and Anne-Marie along with the embroidered cloth for each one and reminded Jack repeatedly which one was for whom. Still not satisfied, she wrote the color for each person on the small cloth “Deliver this to Almera on the way back. Tell her we will pick it up in the evening. I will finish Thomas’s cloth by then.” “Um” Jack kissed Mira goodbye and locked the

The process was well thought through. There were two guards manning the gate. Only two, at the most four, people were allowed to enter. At the counter stood six of the king’s most trusted men. They would take the entry and attach a number to the entry and give a cloth badge with the same number to the participant. This would then be put into the rolling drum like bin with other entries and the whole bin rotated so that no one could guess who the entry belonged to. Not even the guards looked at the number that was handed over. The numbers were three digits and randomly arranged. Mira and Jack got off with Jack holding their basket. “We will wait here.” Martin and Oden didn’t get off. They didn’t know what cousin was up to … but Martin didn’t feel confident entering the palace grounds. He felt flustered looking at the imposing structure. Oden nodded in agreement. He wasn’t flustered but he didn’t think it was appropriate. “We will accompany you.” No one knew when Samuel’s men reached

Mira and Jack went into the costume shop as Martin and Oden were distracted with the shop selling garden tools. Mira got a wig with shoulder length hair and sideburns. She also bought thick eyebrows and a pair of glasses for Jack to wear. They returned discreetly and stood behind Oden and Martin. “Fancy anything?” Jack asked with a chuckle as he saw them standing pensively. “No… we were just waiting for you.” Martin shrugged. He wanted to buy something for Mira and Jack, but he didn’t know what and soon gave up the idea. They wandered through the streets chatting and munching on snacks they bought from street vendors. Mira bought 2 brown, 2 dark grey, 1 wide brimmed dark green and 1 grey hat when they reached the hat shop. Oden and Martin looked curiously at Mira who had gone crazy buying hats. Jack stood back with a doting smile; he knew who the hats were for as he saw the colors. Next, they wandered into a shop with hair accessories, and she bought 4-pointed petal hair bun metal

Old master Slegh was furious when he saw his useless men who came back injured without achieving their goal. It would be a lie to say he that was not scared by the knowledge that Dame Killion’s men were escorting them. He summoned his sons. “Look at this bunch of useless scum you have nurtured.” He didn’t forget to throw a tantrum at them when they arrived. No one of them responded. They stood with their heads lowered. “Did you hear?” Old master narrowed his eyes “Dame Killion’s men were escorting the bastards.” “Um” Cain nodded “I just heard.” “How come you didn’t tell me about it before?” Old master threw a vase at Cain in a rage. “Father, I only came to know about it now.” Cain dodged the vase and shook his head helplessly “Previously, we didn’t know whose men it was… they just jumped out from nowhere….and didn’t have any coat of arms… just a black cloak.” “Do you think she will win?” Old master hooked his eyebrows in annoyance. “She is very good at embroidery.” Cain continu

He didn’t stay long. He got the dresses and came straight back. He saw a suspicious looking woman sneaking around their manor when he returned. “Who are you?” Jack knitted his brows in annoyance. “I… I …” Muriel stuttered “Is this Mira’s house?” “Who wants to know?” Jack wasn’t polite. He didn’t like the woman. “I …I…. I am… I am ….” Muriel hesitated a few times before blurting “I am her friend’s mother.” “Mira doesn’t want to see anyone.” Jack pursed his lips in annoyance as he figured out who the person in front of his was. “Please… please… I beg you.” Muriel fell to her knees. “Please let me see her. I won’t cause you any trouble.” Jack hesitated without opening the door. “Please… son, I beg you.” Muriel bowed to the ground in front of Jack’s feet “Just tell her that I want to see her desperately. If she refuses, I will go back without making things difficult for you.” “My wife is sleeping. You will have to wait till she wakes up.” Jack informed rudely as he opened the door

  • Second chance at happiness   I am truly at peace.

Mira and Jack reached the dungeon where Alina was held towards late afternoon. “Mira, you came??” Alina ran to the bars in excitement as she saw Mira. “What do you want?” Mira put on a rude front even though she was shocked by Alina’s state. “Nothing.” Alina shook her head helplessly before whispering “Just your forgiveness but if you can’t, I will understand. I won’t forgive myself if I were you.” “There is nothing I can do to help, now that things have come to this.” Mira narrowed her eyes thinking if this was an act. “I know.” Alina’s eyes were clear unlike other times when they were full of schemes. “I have only got what I deserve.” Alina started talking “I have had enough time to reflect. Even if what my mother said was true and we were sisters, my actions were not justifiable. You were innocent.” “I could have asked your father openly instead of trying to vent my anger on you two.” “All things aside” Alina raised her head to stare into Mira’s eyes “I had truly fallen in l

“This is so pretty.” Joan fawned blinking with feigned innocence. “Your parents might also be coming.” Caster paused “Do you want to ….” “No need.” Joan interrupted and feigned a regretful expression “They won’t accept me anymore.” The real reason was she wanted to enjoy the glory Caster’s reservation would bring. She knew that her poor parents would be seated somewhere in the outskirts of the room if they ever made it to the event. She also knew she couldn’t sit with Caster, but she could still sit in the best seat for commoners. The seating arrangement was divided into classes, the prominent seats for grand dukes, grand dames, dames and dukes along with their families. The next seats would be reserved for nobility and the rest for commoners. Among commoners, there was no distinction between servants and freemen, except who ever registered first would get a better seat. There was a box which was close to nobility reserved for families of the contestants, but again it was a first co

The Sorens arrived pompously by late afternoon. Not just the old duke and duchess but also the marquess and his wife along with Lord Amberton and his wife, Lady Basvec.Jack’s lips curled up subtly as he saw the line up but feigned an ignorant yet proud expression as he portrayed the picture of an arrogant lord who was stuck up with his overnight good fortune. What was curious was the appearance of eight extra guards surrounding Jack and Mira along with Lazarus.Martin followed Jack with an uncultured, greedy expression; Mira could hardly hold her laughter, she struggled to maintain a haughty expression as she walked beside Jack, holding his arm, arriving fashionably late along with Jack to welcome the unwelcome guests.“Apologies…” Jack spoke lazily without a trace of sincerity as he arrived and sat down with his wife, yawning impolitely “We were resting after our big move.”“We still haven’t even finished exploring the castle.” Mira added with an equally lazy expression.“Apologies…

“And then….” Cornelius repeated a little lost before shrinking within himself “my sorry excuse of a father happened.”He took a deep breath composing himself before opening his mouth to continue “The next duel was meant to happen when I was 30 and it was meant to be with the heir of the Worthington duchy.”“My father, was not only greedy but also stupid as a pig.” Cornelius was not at all reserved nor did he consider his station as he fumed “Misguided by the Asters, he thought that if he tripped the Zumerongs, he could rule over for another 100 years.”“He forgot that if the duel was forfeited without the actual duel taking place, then the chance would befall the next duchy that was due in the chain.” Cornelius shook his head “The Asters were conceited; they knew they could never win against Alex nor me as long as Alex was around, so they first tripped Alex.”“Stripping him of his title so that the Zumerongs would be disheartened and give up their chance. They convinced the old man th

“Why did the previous king resent the Zumerongs?” Martin asked with a puzzled expression out of the blue.“I don’t resent them.” Cornelius’s face darkened as he spat out resentfully.Martin: “”. He turned his head looking at the faces around him with his naïve comical expression that had ‘Did I say that?’ written all over.“Orseus is the current sovereign.” Thomas chuckled looking at Martin’s colorful expression. Martin smiled sheepishly as he scratched the back of his head and corrected “I meant the one before the previous king.”“Nothing in particular other than greed and jealousy.” Cornelius opened his mouth uncomfortably. He sighed seeing Jack and Mira’s blank and curious gaze “To know the reason, you have to know the history of our kingdom’s establishment.”He started his narration looking at the eager faces around him-“When the kingdom of Hal was established my great ancestor, Cornelius, the righteous, was chosen as the ruler at the end of a duel with the six founding dukes, who

Everyone slowly relaxed as Jack turned his attention back to Harrison. He thought for a moment before saying “Accept his visit.” Jack paused narrowing his eyes before adding “Don’t let them know that the royal sovereign, his highness and the others are here. Notify the household that any slip ups, intentional or not, will not be tolerated.”“My Lord, the staff that we have left…” Harrison sighed with a heavy heart “are all the loyal ones… who stayed back out of loyalty.”“But their loyalty is not towards me.” Jack retorted with a childish grin, he seemed to have found a new hobby, he enjoyed taunting the otherwise stiff upper lip, flawless Butler.“My Lord…” Harrison sighed helplessly “They will not betray you, but they may decide to quit once the original masters return.” He knew Jack knew…. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have said that… there was no point in talking in circles or feigning ignorance.“What about you?”Mira pinched Jack’s waist as she noticed Harrison becoming visibly uncomfor

“If the Zumerongs were involved, then it makes perfect sense for Jerome to pass their token and heirloom for safekeeping to me.” Matthew nodded thinking back to Jerome’s caution about not handing it to anyone other than the bearer of the heirloom.“But isn’t there someone already in charge of the Duchy?”“Dad didn’t you say that the Zumerongs were exiled with the charge of high treason?”Both Almera and Mira asked in unison.Matthew pursued his lips unable to answer as that was the last piece of information he had; But he didn’t have to think long as Cornelius spoke “I cleared their name as soon as I took the throne and re-instated them but……” He paused and then continued with a depressed expression “But the direct family, the old duke’s brother and sister who were exiled, along with their family refused to come back. The current owners are the old duke’s cousins.”“If there is already an owner, then why are people still pursing the heirloom?” Mira asked out loud, knitting her brows.“

“Jack is the long-lost Leander.” Bernard continued with the known facts, picking up on Orseus’s intention. Lazarus dutifully jotted it down although he was visibly shaken by what he just heard; it took him a great deal of willpower to keep his calm even though his hands trembled and if one looked carefully, they would notice the slight curves in the otherwise elegant cursive. The room quieted down and sank into a gloomy silence.“That’s it???” Harry was the first to break silence; the frustration in voice and expression was not hidden.“That’s what we know for sure.” Thomas shrugged, his frustration no less than that of Harry as he had been working on this ever since he became capable, an obsession passed onto him by his father.“Then let’s start re-telling the stories we know.” Mira suggested innocently adding as she saw her father hooking his eyebrows “Well, if it not a fact, then it is fiction, in other words story,” She shrugged.“Father always said that stories are like a puzzle w

“So, are you saying that your highness didn’t know that this was Jack’s when he announced the prize?” Almera exclaimed in awe.“So, are you saying that this was originally cousin’s property?” Martin exclaimed at the same time as Almera and continued patting his chest in comfort “So, we don’t have to find the heir and hand it over making all of cousin sister-in-law’s hard work mount up to nothing…. this is good…very good…. hur…hur… ”“Wow… so the property found its own owner without anyone doing anything…” Martin continued his mindless chatter, his eyes widening in wonder.“How is it that no one did anything?” Beth slapped the back of Martin’s head as she chided “Isn’t it all because of the sleepless nights your sister-in-law spend, working tirelessly for the competition?”Cornelius chuckled seeing Martin’s innocence and opened his mouth to clarify at the same time as Beth “I truly didn’t know who he was, until Mira announced her fifth request.”Martin rubbed the back of his head with a

The next morning, everyone gathered around the dining table for breakfast, filled with renewed energy and full of fighting spirit as they all knew the agenda for the day; even young Anne-Marie’s eyes were filled with excitement. “Good morning, everyone.” Cornelius and Aglaya were the last to join the table; Jack nodded towards Harrison, in a gesture that conveyed ‘Get everyone away from this area.’ Harrison nodded in acknowledgement before he started to retract the maids and manservants who were serving towards the back of the house. “Keep an eye on the front so that no one interrupts the Lord’s business.” Harrison called on Lazarus before withdrawing to the back himself “I will keep the household engaged at the back.” “It would be better if you could get your men to watch around the room, close enough to guard and yet far enough to not intrude on the Lord’s privacy.” Harrison added as an afterthought. I don’t think that we can get to them as we previously planned now that everyone is here.”She leaned forward and whispered, “They don’t seem to have any plans for leaving any time soon.”Jack chuckled as he stared dotingly at his wife’s innocent face that was filled with a gossipy aura. Her eyes widened with
