Chapter 750

Luke usually just copied my choices for pet supplies. These unopened items weren't the brands I typically bought. Emily knew Luke had pets - these must be from her.

I cast a complicated look toward his upstairs study before leaving with my dog. Sensing my low mood, my dog wasn't its usual playful self, occasionally rubbing against my leg. I picked it up and buried my face in its fur.

Marianne had given it a bath today - it smelled faintly of jasmine, so pleasant.

"I'm scared," I whispered to my dog.

Scared the news was true, scared he'd end up with Emily, scared my barely-opened heart would close again.

My dog whimpered, nuzzling my cheek affectionately.

I gently stroked its head. "At least I have you."

My phone rang - not the name I'd hoped for. I answered.

"Baby, I've reached the hotel safely!"

During work, I'd called Wendy, guessing she'd reached her destination, but she hadn't answered. Now she was calling back.
