Chapter 206

Max had not expected Luke's quick movement. Before he could catch me, he thrust the knife towards Luke.

"Watch out, Luke!" I shouted from a few steps above, seeing Max's actions clearly. My heart leapt into my throat.

Luke's reflexes were even better than I had imagined. He quickly sidestepped, then kicked Max in the chest. "Jen, move to the side!" he instructed.

Luke's kick sent Max tumbling down the stairs like a kite with a broken string. He screamed in pain as he rolled down. Following Luke's warning, I pressed myself against the stair rail, avoiding Max as he fell past me.

As Max rolled by, he reached out to grab my pant leg. But in the next moment, Luke lifted me up a step, and Max's hand merely brushed against my pants before he crashed onto the landing below.

Despite his fall, Max wasn't gravely injured. He quickly stood up, picked up the knife that had fallen beside him, and glared menacingly at Luke and me.
