"Mr. York told me that you asked him to handle my case. Thank you," I said, struggling to find the right words. I wanted to ask Luke why he was helping me, but I didn't dare.

"No need," Luke replied in his usual detached tone. "I'm not doing this for you."

"I promised Mr. and Mrs. Middleton that I'd take care of you."

Now that the conversation had started, I couldn't help but inquire further. "Is that all?"

Realizing that my question may have sounded like I was expecting something more, something ambiguous, I hesitated. It reminded me of the time when he had mocked me for needing to look at my own reflection at his house.
