There he was, the man who I'd given my heart and my very being to. The man who had so cruelly crushed me. The man I'd sworn my life to. He was right in front of me, clear as day.

Caleb looked surprised to see me at first then his gaze fixed on me with an intensity that felt like it could burn through steel. I saw several emotions pass across his features in an instant. He looked the same, if not for his eyes which were shadowed with something I couldn’t place.

“Emma” He said my name, erupting chills through my body.

My lips parted but my breath caught in my throat. Looking at him brought all the memories back, good and bad.

“Caleb” I managed to keep my voice even, hiding the raw mix of anger and vulnerability I felt from seeing him again after seven years.

He stepped closer, and I stepped back.

“Emma, I… I didn’t know you were here.”

“And now you do.” I lifted my chin, every ounce of hurt and fury from that night at the ceremony resurfacing. “What are you doing here?”

His jaw clenched. “There are rogues moving through the area, dangerous ones. We don't know what their motive is but we have to round them up and keep them away from the humans. I came to ensure the safety of… everyone.”

Of course. Caleb, the ever-dutiful Alpha, always willing to sacrifice anything and anyone for the safety of his pack.

I nodded my head. “Goodluck” I went past him and out the door, my heart still racing. Caleb came out after me. His hand found my arm as he spoke my name again.

“Emma”

“What do you want Caleb?”

“I… Emma, I made a mistake. I shouldn't have–”

“Don’t.” I held up a hand, my voice hard. “Don't you dare. You left me. You made your choice. I’ve moved on. So don't you dare come to me with this crap”

I saw a pain which closely rivaled mine in his eyes. He was fighting to suppress it but I didn't care. No, I did care, but I didn't want to. Caleb had hurt me; he deserved to bear his cross.

“You're right. I'm sorry”

“Alpha” Caleb's eyes didn't leave mine. Someone from the pack came up from behind us. He glanced at me briefly with a look of knowing before he turned to Caleb.

“There's been some movement, the rogues are around. We need to leave now”

“Okay”

“Please go home Emma. Take care of yourself”

I didn't give him a response. I just left. I had my son to worry about so I pushed away all the thoughts and emotions.

I'd been delayed because of Lucas and it was getting dark fast. I'd been walking for almost 30 minutes and I still hadn't seen a single cab pass by so I decided to keep going till I reached home.

The streets were quiet that night. It was like a warning of something to come. Soon, I began to hear noises but I didn't dare stop to look. Not after what had happened last night. Caleb and his pack could take care of whatever the threat was. I just wanted to get home to my son.

The first sign of trouble was when I felt I was being watched and followed. The hairs on my body stood up straight and I kept resisting the urge to turn around.

“There's no one there” I told myself as I continued to walk. But I wasn't doing a very good job at convincing myself.

I turned down a quiet alley and out of the corner of my eye I saw a dark figure rush by from across the street. That was enough to stop me dead in my tracks. I stood in the empty street, waiting for my stalker to reveal himself.

I didn't have to wait long. I turned around and saw a man standing in front of me, except he wasn't a man. His eyes were a light Crimson red and his gaze was menacing.

“W-what do you want?” I asked. It was no coincidence that I'd encountered two rogue wolves in two nights.

“We're not here for you. But you are in our way”

I was confused. I'd been minding my own business before I'd been attacked and then stopped in the middle of the street so how was I in anyone's way.

The Rogue didn't say anything more as he lunged for me. I had barely a moment's notice to dive out of the way. I recovered fast and bared my fist back, it connected with his face making him jerk back. But my upper hand didn't last much longer as he grabbed me by my neck and tightened his grip.

I could feel the life slowly draining from my body as I fought and struggled against his grip. Just when the world started to go black, his grip loosened and I fell to the ground. I coughed and spat out saliva as I tried to recover all the lost air.

I looked back to see the rogue engaged in a fight with Caleb. I managed to keep my eyes open to watch just in case Caleb needed assistance but it was clear he didn't need any. He already had the Rogue with his face pressed to the ground and his arm twisted behind him. Just a little more pressure and Caleb would rip out the guy's arm.

“What are you doing here?” Caleb questioned. “Tell me!”

The Rogue didn't say anything and instead continued to struggle against Caleb's grip.

“I'm not going to ask you again”

“Fuck you” The Rogue spat out and in a swift moment, I heard a sickening crack and then a snap as the rogue cried out. Caleb had ripped his arm off. I winced and turned away. I'd never been a fan of gore or torture.

Just then, the rest of Caleb's hunt party arrived.

“We're taking him back alive. He's refusing to talk” Caleb said simply as he stood up, adjusting his black shirt. They lifted up the rogue and left when Caleb signaled for them to do so.

“Are you okay?” He suddenly turned to me. His voice was soft and warm, a contrast to how he'd spoken to the rogue just moments ago.

“I'm fine” I managed even with my sore throat.

“Can I walk you home?”

“There's no need for that. My place isn't far anymore. Thank you for saving me” I said and started walking away.

“Come on Emma. Don't be stubborn this time just let me walk you home so I know you're safe.”

As I stared at him under the moonlight, I noted that he was no longer the big scary strong Alpha who led his people selflessly. He was just Caleb and in that moment, all Caleb wanted was to ensure my safety.

“Please” His dark eyes glistened and I couldn't say no.

I turned and started walking again, although I kept a much slower pace. He got the hint and followed close behind me. Caleb didn't say a word to me and I was thankful for the silence.

“This is my stop” I said when we'd reached my house, or rather Christina's house which was only a little walk away from mine. I didn't want him knowing exactly where I was staying, or worse, for him to see Lucas.

“Okay. Well then, goodnight”

“Thank you” I said quietly as I looked down.

I could feel the hesitation as countless thoughts probably went through his head. I was about to leave when the door to Christina's house flung open and to my absolute horror, Lucas ran out with his arms wide open and calling “Mum, mum!”
