They eventually parted the hug and headed home. The kids were at school, so it was easier to avoid unnecessary questions.

Lydia went to Carson's room, freshened up, and changed into one of her dresses, but despite being free, she still had a sad face.

Carson had decided to stay with her, but he saw how gloomy she was. He walked to the bed and sat down.

“Hey,” Carson muttered and reached for her hands that had little cuts in them.

Lydia raised her head and said; “Happy birthday, cookie.”

A smile escaped Carson's lips, that was the only birthday wish he truly wanted to hear.

“Thank you,” Carson laughed gently.

The glow in her eyes vanished again and she lowered her head.

“I'm sorry for not bringing you out, early enough.” Carson apologized.

Lydia forced a smile on her lips.

“It's okay, you came to visit every day and that was kind of you.”

“Why are you talking to me like I'm a stranger? I must visit you and try my best to bail you out of that hellhole.” Carson argued in a low t
