Cassie.

I didn’t dare look away from the man in front of me.

He took a step forward, and I instinctively took one back. My heart pounded in my chest as I tried to create some distance, but it was futile.

He kept coming closer.

There was a strange ease to his movements, as though he wasn’t in a hurry. Like a predator taking his time with cornered prey. A lazy, almost amused smile played on his lips, making my stomach churn.

My back hit the edge of a curb. I froze, my breath hitching as he reached into the pocket of his coat.

“Relax,” he said smoothly, pulling out a cigarette. He placed it between his lips, lighting it with a flick of his lighter. The small flame illuminated his sharp features, the cold glint in his eyes.

He took a slow drag, inhaling deeply before exhaling a cloud of smoke into the crisp night air. Then, he smiled again.

“Damon,” he said simply, his voice low and casual.

“And you are?”

I hesitated, my lips pressing together as unease crawled over my skin.

Cassie.Shock filled me, rooting me to the ground. My heart raced so fast I thought it might explode. Damon and Axel stood locked in a battle of stares, each exuding dominance, the tension between them sharp enough to cut through steel.Damon’s fury was evident in his clenched jaw, but Axel’s face was calm—a dangerous kind of calm. It wasn’t the absence of emotion but a silent warning that made the air between them feel heavy and suffocating.“Mate!” Cy’s voice roared in my mind, snapping me out of my shock.“Come here, Cassie.” Axel’s deep, commanding voice sent shivers down my spine. My feet moved instinctively toward him, even as my mind screamed in protest. Every cell in my body knew it was safer to be with Axel than to remain in Damon’s grasp. But before I could close the distance, Damon shifted in front of me, blocking my path.“I saw her first, Axel,” Damon growled, his voice sharp with defiance. “I’m not letting you take my kill even if you’re the one who proposed the bill.”

Axel.Cassie stared up at me, the expression in her doe, brown eyes, unreadable, though I could sense the war raging inside her. Her hand hovered over the car door handle, trembling ever so slightly before falling back into her lap, the long extension of her braids moving with her.She parted her lips, ready to argue, but I didn’t give her the chance. “There’s no debate here, Cassie,” I said firmly. “You’re coming with me.”Her lips pressed together, her gaze narrowing slightly as if she were weighing her options. After what felt like an eternity, she shook her head, her voice soft but firm. “I appreciate you saving me back there, Axel, but I can’t return to Red Hollow. I won’t.”Her words ignited a flicker of anger inside me. Did she even understand how close she’d come to death?“Do you have any idea what just happened to you?” My voice was sharp, cutting through the tense silence between us. “If I’d been a second late, Damon would’ve dragged you off and killed you. Right now, y

Cassie. The suitcase felt heavier in my hand than it should have, but I knew the real weight wasn’t in my suitcase. It was in the decision I’d just made—or, rather, the decision that had been made for me.I hated it.I hated that I had no choice but to follow him. I hated that even as I considered running, my own mind betrayed me with the reality that Axel would find me. Running would only make it worse. When I reached the car, the sight of Axel froze me in place. He was leaning against the sleek black SUV, arms folded across his broad chest, one boot crossed over the other. His head was tilted down, a strand of dark hair falling into his face as if he didn’t have a single care in the world.Even from here, I could see how the black tee clung to his shoulders, outlining every sharp, defined muscle. My throat went dry, and I cursed myself for noticing.“This is the same man who destroyed you, Cassie,” I had to remind myself under a muffled breath.Axel looked up then, and the intensity

Cassie.A light tap on my shoulder pulled me from the haze of sleep. I blinked, adjusting to the darkened surroundings, and met Axel’s piercing gaze. His voice, low and steady, broke through the silence of the night. “We’re here.”The weight of those two words sank in like an anchor. My chest tightened as I processed them. I was in Red Hollow pack.It had been dark for hours now, but the night only seemed heavier as we arrived. I sat upright, peering out of the window at the all-too-familiar pack grounds. Even under the moonlight, every detail stood out like a haunting memory—the tree line at the edge of the estate walls, the distinct shadows of the pack buildings. My stomach twisted.I had spent three years running, clawing my way out of the pain and darkness this place had buried me in. Three years trying to build a life for myself, free from the ridicule and hate of this pack. And now, I was right back where I started.Cy stirred in my mind, her voice soft but maddeningly smug.

Cassie. The pack house stood before me like a dark reminder of everything I’d fought to leave behind. My feet stayed glued to the ground as my heart hammered wildly in my chest. Through the large windows, I could see my suitcase sitting in the far corner of the living room where Axel had left it. It looked so small and out of place—just like I felt standing outside, unable to go in.Axel had vanished with Warren and Jake into the pack house after my rather rude inquiry. And now it was just me, alone in the biting cold of the night, staring at the place that had been my hell for so many years. The living room looked just as I remembered it—almost too much the same. Sure, the couches were newer, and the center table wasn’t the old scratched one from before. But the walls, the scent, the energy—it was all the same. Too familiar. Too suffocating.I swallowed the lump forming in my throat and took a shaky step toward the door. My fingers grazed the frame, but I froze, unable to go further

Cassie.Axel’s study felt suffocating, the heavy scent of mahogany and scotch pressing against me like a hand pressed against my neck. My fists clenched at my sides as I stood in the doorway, trying to calm the storm inside me. What had I been thinking, coming back to this place? Coming back with him?I knew it was a mistake, and I should’ve resisted even if it cost me my life.Maybe a part of me—no, a foolish, desperate part of me—had hoped things would be different now. That being Axel’s mate might mean something. That it might mean I meant something to him. But that hope had been crushed the moment I overheard him say that no one could know I was his mate. I was nothing to him. Just like always, and not even being his mate could change thatThe realization burned, but it also solidified my resolve. I couldn’t stay here, not with him. Not like this.I stepped fully into the room, clearing my throat to announce my presence. Three pairs of eyes turned to me: Axel’s, sharp and unread

Cassie.I woke up for the second time to a gentle tapping on my shoulder, a sound soft but persistent enough to drag me out of the sleep I hadn’t realized had claimed me. My head jerked up, and I blinked, trying to organize myself, and my thoughts. The living room came into focus—the same one I’d reluctantly stepped into last night. My suitcase was still where Axel had left it.A sigh escaped my lips and I closed my eyes again, too tired to deal with anything. The tapping came again, and I turned my head to find a young girl standing beside the couch. She looked to be in her late teens, with dark hair tied into a loose braid and eyes that mirrored curiosity.“Who are you?” she asked her voice light but laced with caution.I froze, startled by the unfamiliar face. My mind jumped to conclusions—ones that made my stomach churn. Was she… Axel’s?I gasped, sitting upright. “Are you—are you married to Axel?” The question tumbled out before I could stop myself, and the girl’s brows shot up

Axel. The moment the elevator doors slid open, I felt a spark of irritation that shot straight through my chest. Cassie was standing next to Jake, her petite frame dwarfed by his tall, broad stature. Her face tilted up toward me, confusion clouding those brown doe-like eyes of hers. And indifference. There was a damn trace of indifference in her expression, like she couldn’t care less about my presence. That look was enough to make my jaw clench, and my wolf, Ice, stirred in my mind.“Pull her away. Mark her,” he snarled, his voice raw and demanding, “Let them all know she’s ours.”I shook my head, keeping my expression neutral even as Ice’s growls rattled my brain. “Not now,” I told him firmly.“Then when, Axel?” Ice snapped, “She’s right there, and I can smell Jake all over her!”Ice’s possessiveness clawed at me, but I shut him out before his anger spilled into mine. I couldn’t deal with his relentless growling and Cassie’s infuriating presence at the same time.Still, my eyes c

Cassie.“We need to leave here right now!” Violet said, her voice hushed but frantic.I nodded, not even bothering to look back. There was no point in staying—there wouldn’t be any lectures today, not with the ambience around school. Without wasting another second, we turned and walked briskly toward the school gate, our minds clouded with uncertainty. When we reached the gate, I swallowed hard, my pulse racing. “I’m too scared to go home alone,” I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper.Violet let out a breath, nodding. “Me too. I’m even more scared to be alone at home.”A silence stretched between us, thick with fear etched on both our faces. Then, an idea formed in my head. “What if we return to Red Hollow together?” I suggested. “I’m pretty sure we’ll be safer there. There are guards all around and everything,” I told her.I was so scared that as I spoke, my body shook. I had a feeling whoever killed Jared was the rogue from before, and a rogue killing around me set me off in

Cassie.I finished dressing while Violet was still in the shower and pulled out a few outfit options from my closet for her. Since she had come in only her leather pants and jacket, she didn’t have clean clothes to wear to school, so it only made sense that I gave her something out of my closet. By the time she stepped out, rubbing a towel over her damp curls, I was already sitting on the bed, slipping my feet into my shoes. She glanced at the outfits laid out on the bed and raised a brow. “You do know I have my own clothes, right?”I smirked. “You’re welcome.”Violet rolled her eyes, but I noticed the small smile tugging at her lips as she picked a pair of jeans, the same one we once fought for, and a fitted top. While she got dressed, I stood up, grabbed my phone and book bag, and together, we left the apartment, heading downstairs. The moment we stepped outside, we saw Jake leaning against his car, arms crossed as he waited. His gaze flickered to Violet first, then to me.“Good m

Cassie.I could still feel Axel’s warmth on my skin, his steady arms around me, but I forced myself to shake the feeling off. It didn’t mean anything. It couldn’t mean anything. I couldn’t let it mean anything.“If you cry anymore, you’ll fall sick,” Axel murmured, his voice gentle yet firm as he cupped my face, wiping away the tears that wouldn’t stop falling.I swallowed hard, hating the way his touch felt comforting. I shouldn’t be accepting his comfort, not after everything. But my body had other ideas—it melted into him like it was second nature. His dark eyes looked a bit clear, and it felt like I could read his mind, but I couldn’t.His fingers brushed against my cheek, lingering for a second longer than necessary. “Do you want me to get Violet?” he asked.I shook my head, suddenly remembering that Violet was in my apartment waiting for me, I stepped back quickly, needing space away from him. “I’m fine,” I said, my voice raw from crying. I wiped my face with the back of my ha

Cassie.“I’m afraid that can’t happen. I cannot ignore you, you’re my mate,” Axel said, a frown settling on his face. My breath hitched at his words.“So you agree that the only reason you tolerate me now is because we’re mates?” I countered, crossing my arms over my chest, pain evident in every word.Axel let out a slow exhale, dragging his fingers through his hair as if he were holding back frustration. “You know that’s it true,” “Then tell me what is!” He went silent, and a scoff fell out of me.“I went in search of you even before I knew you were my mate, Cassie. But I’m guessing that’s not enough for you,” he said, his voice dipping into something almost sad. I wanted to ask why… why he had searched for me after I left, because I knew it wasn’t because he suddenly fell in love with me. Hell, he was right, because whatever his reason for doing that was, it would never make any sense to me, because of how he’d treated me prior to that time.Axel cleared his throat, adjusting hi

Axel.Cassie felt so small in my hands. Too light. Too fragile. The moment she collapsed, I caught her without thinking, my grip firm as I steadied her trembling frame. Her breathing was uneven, and she blinked multiple times, as though trying to steady herself. I adjusted my grip, letting her stand on her own, but I didn’t let go entirely. Not yet.“What are you doing here?” I asked, my voice rough.Cassie swallowed, her lips parting as though she wanted to say something, but then she hesitated. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have come here. I—I didn’t know I wasn’t allowed to be here,” she said quickly, her words rushing out in a way that felt forced, unnatural. That wasn’t what I meant.I opened my mouth to clarify, but she shook her head, cutting me off before I could get a word in. “You don’t have to explain. I’ll just leave. You said you wanted to talk, but this is probably not the best time. Let’s talk later.”“Cassie.” My voice came out like a thunderclap, sharp and commanding. My ha

Cassie.“I’m sorry about what happened to you. I never would’ve thought you went through so much,” I said, my voice softer than I’d ever heard it.It was probably because I knew what being the outcast felt like, and how sometimes all I wanted was for someone to speak to me in a soft voice. Violet shook her head. “You don’t have to apologize, Cass. It wasn’t your fault.”“But they decided to look into you 'cause I brought you around,” I said. She shook her head again.“I’m pretty sure that’s not the reason. They most likely started digging into me since the second time we met with Jake outside school’s gate,” she said with a light chuckle. It made sense.“I still don’t know how they could do such a thing,” I sighed.“You know how your mate it. He is who he is, and he’s not short of enemies, anyone can be an enemy.”“Stop taking their side!” I said with a firm voice. Viola laughed and pulled me to sit beside her on my bed.“I’m not taking sides. I’m just thinking about it logically.”

Cassie.Axel remained silent, his lips pressed into a firm line, his gaze unwavering. I was still waiting for an explanation—anything to justify what Violet had just revealed. But neither he nor Warren said a word.A heavy silence settled in the room until Jake suddenly stepped forward, shoving past Warren with a determined look on his face.“I was the one who suggested it,” he announced. My breath hitched. my eyes darted to Jake, my mind struggling to process his words. Beside me, Violet tensed.“I was also the one who planted it in your home,” he added.Violet’s face hardened. “Why?”Jake let out a sigh, as if he had been preparing for this confrontation for a long time. “Because I wanted to know what you were up to. I couldn’t just sit around and wait for you to make your move.”“Against who?” Violet asked, her voice eerily calm.“Axel? Cassie? The entire pack? Take your pick.”I felt her stomach twist. Cassie.I slowly pushed the door open, my heart hammering against my ribs as my gaze landed on Axel. His brows were drawn together, his chest rising and falling in deep, measured breaths. He was angry—no, furious. Warren stood beside him, his face mirroring Axel’s rage, his hands balled into fists. And then there was Jake, lingering near the door like he didn’t want to come inside, his expression caught somewhere between anger and disbelief. But none of them were looking at me.Their eyes were locked on the person standing by the door, and when I followed their gaze, I froze.Violet. She was really there. She stood there, dressed entirely in black—leather pants and a matching jacket, a hat pulled low over her face, casting shadows over her features. A part of me wanted to rush to her and demand to know what was going on, but another part—the part gripped by fear—kept me rooted in place.“Violet?” I whispered, my voice barely audible over the pounding in my ears. She didn’t move, didn

Cassie.Over the next few days, a few things had changed.Violet stopped coming to school. Not once had I seen her since the last time we spoke, and no matter how many times I called, she didn’t answer. When I texted, her replies were vague, short, and always delayed. Busy, she’d say. Can’t talk right now. At first, I gave her space, but by the third day, it started to gnaw at me. Violet wasn’t the type to shut me out. Something was wrong.Axel had been keeping his distance, too. I hadn’t seen him at the apartment, hadn’t even felt his presence nearby. He was living in the packhouse now, like he should’ve since my arrival. I told myself it was a good thing, that I wanted him gone after everything that had happened between us, but some traitorous part of me kept questioning it. Why now? After that kiss? It was easier when he was cruel and distant because then I knew where we stood. Now, I didn’t.Jake and Warren had also been avoiding me, though maybe ignoring was a better word. I ba
