_Lynette’s Point Of View_
“Lynn, you can’t let this get to you. I know it’s so much harder than it sounds, but you have to try,” Jessy’s concerned voice said. I was currently sitting on the floor of my room with my back to the door, and Jess was on the other side, trying to get me to open up. I knew I said I wasn’t going to cry, but as soon as Jess wrapped her arms around me when she first got here, the dam broke. I didn’t want her to see me crying so much, so I ran into my room and locked the door behind me. “Eight years, and what do I have to show for it?” I sobbed. “A used condom on his backseat and him trying to gaslight the hell out of me. I wasted my time on him, Jess.” The pain of what I just lost was so raw, it hurt physically. “Don’t say that, babes. You didn’t waste anything. You learned a lot about yourself and life too. It may seem insignificant at the moment, but trust me, it’s not. And this, this is his loss, not yours. Open the door and let me in, Lynn, I’m worried about you.” “I’m fine, I’m fine,” I said, sniffing back the rest of my tears. “Open the door and let me see for myself,” she said softly. Taking a deep breath, I scooted on my ass away from the door and I opened it without standing up. I didn’t have the strength to. As soon as Jessy saw my red-rimmed eyes, her expression soured, and a fresh round of tears threatened to leak from my eyes. “Ohh, baby, come here,” she said, getting on the floor with me and pulling me into a warm embrace. My body shook violently as I cried on her shoulders, rambling incoherently. “W-Why did he do that to me? After five years of friendship, two years dating, and a year of being engaged. Where do I begin now? It’s three months to our wedding, Jess. What about all the preparations?” Jessy pulled me back by my shoulders. “You have me. We’ll figure it out together, okay? It won’t be easy, but I’ll be here with you through every bump on the road.” I looked at Jessy and nodded, grateful for her unwavering friendship and support. She had been one of the biggest blessings in my life, and I loved her to death and back. “Okay,” I said, wiping my tears away. “I think I know what will cheer you up. Let’s go out to chase some of the bad stuff away. It’ll do you some good. You’re already dressed up, so we’ll just do some touch up for points to your aura, and we’re good to go,” she affirmed. I shook my head once. “I don’t know, Jess. No one wants to be around me and my runny nose right now.” “Well I’m here, and whoever has a problem with it can use the exit button. Come on,” she jerked me by my shoulders, her eyes gleaming with excitement. “In times like these, having fun could be a great way to get yourself back on track.” “You go alone, Jess. I don’t want to ruin your fun for you.” She feigned offense. “Bold of you to assume this night is for me.” When I cocked an eyebrow to her, she laughed. “Okay, fine, maybe I’ll have a drink or two too, but I want this for you. It’ll be fun, I promise.” “Maybe I should just get my laptop and work some more before I retire for the night. I may be heartbroken, but I still have a job to keep, and who knows, work may just be what I need to pull me out of this,” I bargained. Jessy blew a raspberry, causing me to giggle. “No, it won’t. What you need is a good time, and not more stress to your brain. Work can wait. And who knows, you can find someone to go home with tonight.” Scrunching my nose up to the idea, Jessy giggled. “Fine. No hotties. Just shots. Come on!” Weighing the pros and cons, I realized that there was no reason for me to keep sulking. I still had my sexy outfit on, and if it didn’t serve one purpose, it could serve another. “Fine.” I gave in. “Let’s do it.” Jessy’s shriek could be heard all over New York City. “We’ll have a blast time,” she promised, and I couldn’t help but smile. We ended up inside a club, and as laser lights shone unsteadily across the crowded dance floor, and the smell of excessive body spray clouded my nostrils, I wanted nothing more than to leave. Jessy was full of life and vibrant as always. "Come on, Lyn!" Her voice was hardly audible over the noise. "It's time to party! Relax and enjoy yourself!" I tried to be enthusiastic just like her, but I couldn't. I felt discomfort seeping through my bones. "I’m trying, Jess, it’s just...I'm not feeling it tonight." But Jessy, ever the optimist, was not going to let my gloomy attitude stop us. She grabbed my hand and pulled me into the crowd with a malicious gleam in her eyes. I forced myself to give in, swaying my hips to the song that played over the speakers, when all of a sudden, a sharp pain zapped the front of my head and my right eye. The volume of the music increased in my ears, and the lights began to blend into a rainbow of colors. “I shouldn’t have come here!” I said to myself angrily, struggling in between sweaty bodies in search of an exit. I staggered to a nearby corner and tried to steady myself by leaning against the wall, my breaths coming in short, rapid gasps as I tried to manage the oncoming migraine. It was then that I saw him. He was the only one at the bar of the club, taking shot after shot of alcohol. His shadow stood out against the club's fading lights, and his toned body spoke strength and power. His impeccable clothing showed off his muscles with every motion, giving no room for dispute about his physical might. A strong jawline with well-groomed stubble adorned his face, giving his otherwise elegant appearance a rustic charm. He exuded an aura of confidence and power that was impossible to ignore, and I found myself moving to him on instinct. But aside from my apparent attraction to the seductive man, I was concerned about his continuous drinking. “Hey, you shouldn’t be drinking that much,” I said to him over the loud music, and it took a second for him to tilt his head to face me. My words died in my throat. The man was freaking gorgeous. I found my voice when it seemed we were just staring at each other without speaking. “No matter what it is, drinking like this won’t solve the problem.” He spoke after a stretching silence. “And how exactly would you know what will solve my problems?” He asked, his thick baritone voice low, and laden with emotions that had me clenching my thighs together. He wasn’t being rude, just curt. “And why do you care?” I shrugged. “I just got out of a relationship, badly, might I add, and you don’t see me drowning myself in a bottle. Look, you’ll only hurt yourself more with this, so trust me when I say it’s not worth it.” His dark eyes pierced through me, and my words came out as a string of stutters. This man that I had just met, was doing more to my body than Victor did all through the time we were together. I knew beyond a doubt that he could do more. Encouraging myself to throw caution to the wind for once and put myself first, I asked on a shaky breath. “Do you want to dance?” I saw the wheels turning in his eyes for long seconds, but he finally gave in and stood up, and I smiled triumphantly. Following his lead, we made it to the dance floor, and I turned to face him, wrapping my hands around his tall neck. His hands found my hips, and I was surprised when I didn’t feel repulsed by the action. What accent did I hear from him? What scent did his masculine cologne remind me of? Was it… “Lynnette!” An angry male voice barked, and I froze, recognizing it all too well, and preparing myself for a second round of embarrassment. “Shit. It’s my ex,” I whispered quietly._Lynette’s Point Of View_ “Shit. I’m sorry, it’s my ex,” I muttered, squeezing my eyes shut and hoping that I would disappear, or magically turn into an insect. Not only was Victor showing up here to embarrass me, but he also decided to show up right when I thought I hit the jackpot with this gorgeous man. “The one you just got out of a relationship with?” The strange man asked, cutting through my thoughts. I hadn’t even gotten his name. “Yeah. Him,” I answered dryly. Turning back, I saw Victor marching toward me, so I said goodbye with a sigh. “It was nice meeting you.” With that, I took a step in Victor’s direction. He spoke before I could. “This is what you decide to do with yourself barely an hour after we split?” He scoffed. The effrontery of this man. Was Victor really trying to ridicule me for the same thing he did? How dare he? “Split? Is that what you call it? Because from what I remember, you made sure I saw with my eyes the disgusting things you did with some
_Lynette’s Point Of View_This wasn’t how I imagined my morning would go, but then again, I couldn’t really expect that much from a one-night stand with a total stranger. After realizing that it was my co-worker, Savannah, who called me, I looked around the hotel room, to find that the hot grumpy man, Bladen, who took me to orgasm heaven and back last night, was nowhere to be seen. Hearing the sound of the shower running in the bathroom, I relaxed. My mind immediately went to last night’s events as my body thrashed and squirmed under Bladen’s weight, and truly, I screamed his name as I came so hard, that I technically died. Not once.Red crept up my cheeks till my face almost hurt, but it was too bad that I had to cut this morning short.Besides, what were we going to do if Bladen came out from the bathroom and found me idling on his bed?Have breakfast together? Kiss? Say “Bang later”?I’d never had a one-night stand, so I wouldn’t know, but I didn’t need to find out.Pushing myself
_Lynette’s Point Of View_Savannah’s phone was still in my grasp as I tried to think of how I would get myself out of this scandal of being Bladen’s mistress. I didn’t have much time, so when Savannah’s burst of laughter died down and she reached for her phone, I did the most stupid thing I could think of.I bolted.“Hey! My phone,” Savannah whisper-shouted behind me, but I paid her no attention, and thankfully, she didn’t follow me as I rushed for the restroom. It was only a matter of time before this news would spread around the office, so I needed to think quickly. My mind was set on the destination ahead that I didn’t notice when I was cornered by someone until a sharp sting on my left wrist almost blinded me.“Ow!” I cried out, snapping my head up to see who was inflicting such pain on my hand, only for my blood to run ice cold on meeting his bloodshot eyes and disheveled hair. Victor. “H-how are you here? You’re not supposed to be here, Victor,” I said breathlessly, looking arou
_Lynette’s Point Of View_If I didn't know better, I would have mistaken Bladen’s chilling tone for anger, but that was the least of my worries after hearing him say that he could have me fired for a narrative he had an almost equal hand in creating as I did. Suffering a job loss after the terrible state in which things ended between me and Victor would be something I’d struggle to recover from, so I would rather not lose my job right now.All I could do was think fast in a bid to make the scandal go away.I could attest to the fact that Bladen was an insanely attractive man, so he definitely had women flocking him like moths to a flame and scandals like this all the time. An idea flashed in my head, and I voiced it out.“I am certain that a man like you must have dealt with this before, so it shouldn’t be new. You must have the influence and resources to have the blogs say that this is all a mistake, right?” I said, hating how desperate I sounded. “It might take a while, but it will
_Lynette’s Point Of View_Bladen was going to fire me to avoid any repercussions of the scandal on his name, so my mind raced to think of yet another solution. If I had any ideas at all, there was a possibility of Bladen standing on him not taking any chances with each of them.Nothing solid was coming to my head anymore except the fact that this may very well be my last day working the job I loved because I couldn’t keep my eyes off a forbidden apple. My fingernails dug painfully into my free palm, and under the party dress that caused me this trouble, my phone buzzed directly against my lingerie-strapped thigh. Thankfully, it was on meeting mode.Bladen kept his eyes on me the entire time while my mind was going on a spiral and I was sure that he must have noticed my pale complexion, trembling hands, and blank stare because he shifted in his seat, causing my eyes to snap back to see what could have been mistaken for compassion on his face. That couldn’t be right because he just made
_Lynette’s Pov_I stared blankly at the email, my hands trembling violently as I struggled to comprehend what I was seeing. The debt statement glared back at me, the bright light of my phone burning into my eyes. It felt too real, and that sent a cold shiver down my spine. I wished it were a nightmare—a terrible, twisted joke, which would have been far better. But it wasn’t. It was real. The numbers blurred before my eyes, yet no matter how much I willed them to disappear, they remained, anchoring me to the terrifying truth.I was in debt. Six hundred and fifty thousand dollars of debt. How?Slowly, my legs gave out, and I sank to the cold restroom floor, running my fingers through my hair in frustration. How did I get here? My mind was a chaotic storm of questions with no clear answers. I had never made reckless financial decisions, not even once. I wasn’t extravagant. So how could this have happened? _ Lynnette’s Pov_ I wasted no time in rushing to the bank. If I had come from home and had my Toyota Camry, it would have been easier, but I doubt if I could even drive in the state I was in. My my heart pounding so hard it felt like it would burst from my chest he only thought in my mind was getting to the bank. I couldn’t keep speculating, couldn’t let fear paralyze me. I had to confirm the truth myself, so I took a cab. As soon as I arrived at the bank, I sprinted inside, heading straight for my manager’s office. To my relief, he was seated at his desk, a polite smile on his face as he gestured for me to sit. “Miss Lynette, how can I help you today?” he asked, his tone calm, almost too casual for the storm brewing inside me. I barely managed to sit before blurting out, “To be very honest with you, Sir, I’m not okay. I received an email this morning stating that I took out a loan—six hundred thousand dollars.” I exhaled sharply, trying to keep my voice steady. Saying it out loud
_Bladen’s POV_ Right as the evening set, I strode through the familiar halls of my grandfather’s estate. The polished floors gleamed under the dim lighting, reflecting the towering portraits of men who had built, expanded, and ruthlessly maintained the legacy I was now expected to uphold. One I had no problem doing. The maids bowed their heads as I passed, a silent acknowledgment of my position, and I internally wondered why such demonstrations were still in play, just as unease crawled under my skin. I knew this meeting wasn’t just a formality. My grandfather never summoned me unless there was something important—and since he fell ill, everything had become important. I reached the heavy wooden doors of his private study, one of the most exclusive rooms in the estate. It wasn’t just a place for reading or work; it was a domain only a select few family members ever entered. And it belonged solely to him. Pushing the door open, I stepped inside. _Lynnette's POV_ I wanted to tell Bladen not to come. If he was worried about reporters, wouldn’t they just follow him? That wouldn't stop them. In fact, it would only bring more attention to me—leading them to my place—but he had already ended the call. I needed no one to tell me that he wanted to come here himself, but what for? Why would he come here himself? Knowing that he was going to be here in a moment, since there wouldn’t be any traffic, I quickly jerked out of my thoughts, gazing right back at my messy room. My apartment right now looked more like a madwoman’s house than anything. Every one of my belongings was scattered around the corners, from dirty plates I had used for the past days to clothes strewn carelessly. The truth was, I wasn’t like this. It’s just that this whole situation was so overwhelming that I hadn’t even had time or energy for the slightest thing. Out of nervousness—something I hated to admit—I began cleaning up my mess, even though I couldn't deny
_Bladen’s POV_ From my penthouse, I could see everything outside. Everything. From the towering skyscrapers to the shimmering city lights, the movement of cars far below—it all had a way of making me feel both powerful and insignificant at the same time, but what I cherished the most was the solitude… the solitude which seemed haunting today. Every evening, after work, I would unwind with a drink in hand, enjoying the silence that wrapped around me like a comforting blanket. It was the closest thing to peace I had ever known. Tonight, however, was different. I sat on the plush leather couch, my gaze fixed on the breathtaking cityscape of Texas, and there was a bottle of whiskey resting in my right hand, its golden liquid catching the dim light of my living room, all while I thought about the infuriating woman who wouldn’t leave my mind. Lynnette. Now, her ignoring my texts made sense. I had arrived at her apartment, and she flipped me off faster than I could even retort.
_Lynnette’s POV_ It was Six PM in the evening, many hours since Bladen stormed my apartment and proposed a committed relationship which wasn’t real, and since then, I have only changed positions three times. One was from the living room to the kitchen where I forced a sandwich down my throat, then to the bathroom to allow warm wear water trickle down my back, and finally, to my bed where I have been staring into space, thinking. That was how much Bladen rattled me. I tried to figure out what was going on and why he needed us to do this now, what the catch might be, but I couldn’t come to any conclusions or even speculations. Were the blogs finally getting to him and doing damage to his reputation? I finally decided that thinking wasn’t worth my time. I had days before the bank would ask me for a repayment, and I had nothing except my meager savings. I finally got up and reached for my system to begin applying for remote gigs. When I crossed thirty applications, I lost count, but
_Lynnette’s POV_After my visit to Stone’s enterprise earlier in the day, the place I once loved to work but had just been fired from, it dawned on me that I was truly done for. I dragged myself back home, but every step felt more depressing than the last, and the air in my room felt suffocating to the point where I almost had a full blown panic attack. It was already too late to go anywhere, so I spent the night wide awake, counting along with the hands of the clock as my time ticked away.Days.It was just a matter of days before Victor’s actions would have the bank marching down on me with cuffs and throw me into a cage.I was too numb to cry, but morning eventually came, and I grabbed a coat and stepped out.The cold bite of the air on my skin was pleasing, a contrast to the numbness I had felt for hours, and I walked aimlessly until my feet began to hurt.I almost laughed as I thought to myself that it wasn’t like I had any where to be or morning traffic to beat, but I made it ba
_Bladen’s POV_It had been twelve hours since I sent the text to Lynnette, having heard from my sources about her little money situation, but the chat thread still remained as it was since when I pressed send. The message was delivered alright, so Lynnette had either not seen it, or had seen it but chose not to respond.I didn’t know if I was to be impressed or disappointed by this development. I kept staring at the text, expecting her reply to pop up, and just out of nowhere, the phone buzzed on my hand with a call.If it was the number I was expecting—Lynnette’s—, I wouldn’t have huffed irritatedly, but it wasn’t. Instead, it was a more familiar number. The realization made my eyes hover across the top of my phone to see that time was far spent to be receiving calls, but I still sighed, then picked it up.“Why are you calling me at this hour?” My voice was rough with irritation and straight to the point. “It’s two in the morning.”“Apologies, sir,” came the familiar voice of Hama, o
_Lynnette’s POV_ The blaring sound of my ringtone jolted me awake, only for a heavy migraine to slam into my right eye. I tried recalling where I was, only for the realization that I was out of a job and knee deep in debt to hit me. I was about to go down another rabbit hole of thoughts when my phone rang for the second time, reminding me of what woke me up from my fruitless sleep. I checked the caller ID, my brows furrowing when I saw that the call was from Stone’s Enterprise. Picking it up, I pressed the phone to my ear, and the speaker went straight to it. “Hello, Lynnette. I’m really sorry for disturbing you, but I went to your desk earlier this morning and—” I didn’t let her finish before cutting her off. It was Savannah. “I’m sorry, Savannah, but I’ve left. I’m no longer an employee at Stone Enterprise,” I said politely, remembering that she had seen me packing. So why was she calling? “Yes, I’m aware of that, but that’s not why I’m calling. We were trying to hire someo
