I jumped at the sound of the voice hitting my head on the rock above me. I could feel the blood instantly begin to glide down my forehead. I was standing with my face to the stranger and my knife up in less than 2 seconds. Hearing him chuckle sent a wave of fury through my body.
“What is your problem?” I spat at him defensively.
It seemed to catch him off guard. He cleared his throat and his threatening tone returned.
“I belong here, the question is what are you doing here? How did you even get in?” He said looking me over clearly seeing my injury, now injuries.
It was difficult for me to see in the low light. The tunnel only provided a small orb that was mostly shining on his legs. Which seemed to be rather large. The shadow that was surrounding his body told me he was larger than my father, who was a good size man.
There was a flash of fear before my nerves instantly settled. I couldn’t tell if it was from my training, or I knew he wouldn’t hurt me. He sounded like he just wanted to give someone a hard time.
“Uh, Duh. I came in through the rocks, probably the same way you did unless you crawled through there.” I pointed to the tunnel. “Are you going to try to kill me or just bug me?”
A deep noise came from within him, but I couldn’t make out what it was. I could tell I was making him angry, but I didn’t care. I had been itching for a fight lately anyways.
“Woman, you have no idea who I am. Watch your tone.” He was emotionless.
“Do Not Call Me Woman.” I replied, irritated at the term. “My name is Aries. Call me that or bitch if you’d like. Not woman.” I all but spat the words.
“Aries.” He said as if he was trying it out. I wished I could see his face.
“And you are?” I replied still irritated. The blood had begun to drip down my face. I refused to move at all until I had some answers.
“Tadeas.” He forced before lifting his hands up in the air. I could hardly make out the motion, but I chose to take the opportunity to wipe the blood from my head.
“You’re hurt.” He pointed out.
“Yeah. Some asshole made me jump as I was crawling into a tunnel.” I replied.
“I will…” was all I heard before the darkness began to spin around me. I braced myself for whatever impact I was about to fall onto, but I was unconscious before I hit the ground.
As I began to wake, I could feel the slight pain coming from both my ankle and head. They had a paste of herbs and leaves around them. To my surprise my head was on something soft that smelt amazing. It was warm and smelt like the pine trees.
I opened my eyes blinking until my vision began to clear. There was light, it was dim from a fire, but I could see better than I had since entering the cave. My flashlight was next to me, my hunting knife was missing. I sat up quickly, immediately regretting my actions.
“What are you doing? Lay back down!” His tone slightly frantic.
“What did you do to me?” I groaned while searching for my pack and knife.
“I helped your body heal, now if you would just relax for a little while the herbs can do their job.” He spoke to me as if I was a child.
“Seriously, I need to know why you followed me into the cave and what your deal is. NOW.” I began to raise my voice as I spoke.
His chest heavily raised a few times as if he wasn’t used to people speaking to him like that. I could tell he was trying to not lose his temper.
“I told you, I am Tadeas. I am supposed to be in here. You are not.” He replied coldly.
“Well, I will be on my way then. If you would just return my knife and point me in the right direction.” I said sitting up again, slower this time.
Whatever he did with the herbs they certainly helped. As I moved, I was able to grab my pack and search the bag. Part of the medical supplies were missing. “understandable” I said to myself aloud.
“Why do you do that?” He spoke causing me to turn and face him.
In this light I could see him. He was definitely larger than my father who is 6-foot-2-inches. His body was more muscular as well. My father was always in shape even now that he is older, but rather slim. This man almost doubled his muscle mass.
His dark brown hair had subtle streaks of red throughout. His eyes were green with hints of gold. They were the most amazing things I had ever seen. Looking at him made my heart pound. His eyes were focused on mine as he held my gaze.
The scar on the left side of his neck was faded, the sight of it enraged me. I didn’t know why I was so upset about him being hurt. I felt myself begin to get lost in his eyes when my mind snapped me out of it.
“It’s a bad habit but I spend a lot of time alone. Or with children. Either way I am talking to myself most of the time.” I tried to deflect with a joke and went back to looking around for my hunting knife.
“You won’t find it.” He said almost chuckling.
“I want that knife back.” I said as my chest felt like it filled with fire.
“In time. I have a few questions for you first, Aries.”
Hearing him say my name again sent a wave of goosebumps across my skin, gaining my full attention. I didn’t know what I was doing. I sat back down returning my pack to the floor next to me. I noticed the object I was using for a pillow seemed to be some type of clothing.
“I’ll need to be going soon, I am sure the storm is over. Please get this over with.” I said trying to force myself to be unpleasant so he would let me go.
“How did you find the tunnel?” He asked formally.
“On accident, I just followed the path from the cave buried under rocks. The storm was bad; I just needed shelter, okay? Can I go now?” I kept my voice calm and collected.
“No.” No emotion detected in his response.
“Does this have something do to with those markings? I don’t even know what they are! AND I broke my cell phone so it’s not like I have proof!” My voice raised slightly as my need to go heightened.
“Do not raise your voice to me again.” He threatened.
Great now we are back to this… I thought to myself. I took a few deep breaths trying to calm my anger down. I had overcome so much lately this was not going to be the way I die, or the thing that breaks me.
“What do you do?” I could tell he was forcing himself to sound neutral.
“Right now… I am between careers. No! I am not some weird government agent.” I said in a huff.
“Do you want to see the other side of the tunnel?” He asked carefully.
“Is this some kind of trick?” I asked slightly confused.
“No trick, answer the question.” He instructed.
“Yes, I had a feeling it was beautiful. Like the kind of beauty that comes from books and movies.” I relaxed too much and began speaking as if we were friends.
“I will make you a deal.” He said as his corner of his mouth went up in a grin.
It was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. The way his eyes lit up as his lips curved showed a different side to him. I smiled before I knew what was happening. I pursed my lips together before responding.
“What is it?” I said struggling to sound unaffected.
“Go on a date with me. I will show you after.” He tried to hide the anticipation in his voice, but I caught it.
I hadn’t been on a date since Anthony. I wanted to see the other side of that tunnel more than anything. It felt like it was going to change my life forever and I was ready. I wasn’t sure if I was ready to date anyone, no matter the reward. I didn’t know this man. All I knew was he followed me into a dark cave and after causing me to injure myself he at least helped. Why would he do that just to hurt me in the end? The thought of dating anyone after Anthony wasn’t something I thought about often. I missed the intimacy and the sex. Man did I miss the sex. With his deployments over the course of our relationship I was used to going long periods of time with just myself. This was different, there was no light at the end of the tunnel. I had an embarrassingly large box of toys that had kept me happy over the years. I would have to do it at some point. I thought to myself. How bad can it be to just suffer through a dinner with the man to see wh
We walked mostly in silence. Tadeas seemed to have a strange energy rolling off his body. I was lost in my thoughts trying to figure him out. Every now and then my eyes would drift over to him as if he wasn’t really there. “I am just up the road. I can make it from here. Thanks.” I said quickly picking up my pace again. “I don’t mind going the rest of the way.” He responded sounding somewhat offended. “I see. You prefer your own company to others.” His voice turned condescending. “No, I don’t know you. And nothing that has happened so far says I should get to know you.” I shifted my weight as my ankle throbbed. “Do you believe in Magic?” He asked will only 4 houses left to pass. “Like flying brooms and people turning into frogs?” I scrunched my nose. “Things you cannot explain. Old myths and stories about beautiful creatures and witches.” “I don’t know about all that.” I muse
I was lost in his eyes again; the specks of gold seemed to be swirling around. My mind must be slipping into sleep already. His arms wrapped around my body. The embrace took all my pain away. It was as if I was exactly where I needed to be. “Tadeas…” I said just above a whisper. “Aries.” He said in a low seductive voice that was new. I tilted my head all the way back so I could see his face once more. He placed his hand on my cheek, bending his neck, his nose lined with my own. My breath hitched and I wasn’t sure what to do. Is he about to kiss me again? I thought to myself. No way. “You need your rest.” His breath smelt like honey. I no longer wanted rest, I wanted to kiss him. I didn’t move, I had forgotten to breath. He dipped his head closer pressing his lips to mine. His grip around me tightened causing my muscles to sing with approval. His tongue passing my lips, allowing me to explore the taste
I thought the greenery was beautiful before. This had looked untouched by the pollution and destruction of men. There was a waterfall so large I was amazed it sat so peacefully. The flowers were all such radiant colors, I couldn’t pick a favorite if I tried. “It’s beautiful!” I yelled over the motorcycle’s hum. We parked not too far from the trail. Tadeas asked me simple questions here and there as we walked down the path. I asked a few times what was in the bag he carried, while he refused to answer. He would just chuckle and say “patience”. We reached the bottom of the falls, approaching the wall that seemed to reach into the sky, leaving the earth. He looked over at me with a sly grin before looking up the wall. “What’s that look for? I don’t know you that well. I know I do not like that look.” I said trying to keep myself from laughing. “We are going to climb. Do you think you can manage?” His voice teasing me
I didn’t mind, the feeling of his body on mine was intoxicating. I reached my hands towards the opening of his shirt pulling it off his shoulders. I could sense his apprehension as he leaned back slightly, not breaking contact with my lips. “Take it off.” I managed to say into the kiss. A low growl came from his chest. Something inside my body told me it was okay. I wanted him to make the noise again. I could feel his member pushing on my thigh through the jeans. He lifted me up slightly removing my shirt. His eyes widened as he saw the scar covering from my shoulder to the bottom of my ribs. I had forgotten about it in the moment. I could sense his anger rolling off him as he focused on the imperfections of my body. He leaned in and kissed me passionately. I felt his bare chest press against mine as my body gushed, soaking my panties. A deep groan came from his chest as if he knew exactly what he was doing to me. “I am serious. We need to sto
The car arrived for Bethany and me shortly after I walked into her house. Rob was sitting in the recliner, box of tissues in one hand tea in another. He did not look like he was feeling well at all. “Thank you for saving me. She would never let me live it down if she went alone. Sick or not.” He said with a cough. I took a step backwards before covering my hand over my mouth. “No problem, I’ll just wait on the porch, no need to spread that further.” “So dramatic…” Bethany said before placing a kiss on Rob’s head. “Feel better, I shouldn’t be too late.” We slid into the backseat of the car while Bethany was doing so
The following day I had called Johnathon in the morning to decide on a time for dinner. I hadn’t slept at all the night before; I spent the whole night feeling betrayed. I thought Tadeas wanted the same things I did. Johnathon was a perfect gentleman, a safe choice. He picked me up, we went to a small Italian restaurant across town. When he dropped me off, he walked me to the door but didn’t attempt anything further. A few days later he had called to ask me out for another date. I hadn’t seen Tadeas since the night at the art gallery. The longer I went, the more the hole in my chest grew. I tried to throw myself into new distractions. I thought about driving to the waterfall. Something about being back at a place where everything seemed so possible, was e
“The only thing I ask of you is to be upfront with me. I am an understanding person, given the chance.” I said as I opened the door to the guest house. “I can agree to that.” He said closing and locking the door behind him. “If we are going to be upfront… Can I ask you something?” I questioned, he nodded nervously. “Why does it feel so good when you touch me? That’s not a normal thing, is it?” I said trying to hide my apprehension. “We are made for each other. I told you, we are bonded. That is just proof of our fate.” He said taking his hand placing it on my cheek. &n
“I told you she wouldn’t run. You really should have more faith in your partner.” The beautiful creature spoke causing me to jump. I looked around wondering who she was speaking to. I had determined it was a female.Just then I heard a second creature’s wings pushing air above my head. The wind was so strong it caused me to hunch down slightly. My body tensed to prevent myself from falling over. I wanted to look at the creature, but the wings continued to push me downward.“Stop forcing the poor child down like that.” The blue dragon spoke again. I could see the hints of silver glisten in the dim moonlight.“Humans should not know of our existence.” The angry voice came from above me.I pushed myself into a standing position once again. If it was a dream, I would control it. If this was real, I was not going to be pushed around. The second dragon landed not far from the first. His
I searched the sky over again. When I turned around the shape was no where to be found. Once again, the sky was empty aside from the beautiful moon, a few stars, and the deep blue peace. I let out a sigh of frustration before heading back towards the guest house. Bethany was right, it was beautiful outside. The scenery just caused me to grow more irrigated the longer I waited. As I unlocked the door, I heard footsteps behind me. I spun defensively unsure who another visitor would be. I was overjoyed when I saw Tadeas’ face. A smile broke from ear to ear; all my frustration gone. “Here I thought you would be upset I am late.” Tadeas’ flirtatious tone caused butterflies to stir inside my stomach. “Oh… Don’t worry, I am. You can make it up to me later.” My snarky response was stopped with a passionate kiss. “I look forward to it.” He said breathing heavier than usual. “Are your parents g
As we sat inside the tattoo shop there was small talk mixed with hidden secrets. This happened to be one of the businesses his family owned. I never would have guessed it. I wasn’t sure what type of businesses I assumed he was talking about. I expected more mob less average guy next door. Tadeas explained how he had known the artist his entire life. They looked about the same age. The shop was clean from what I saw. I was completely smitten with Tadeas the whole time. I hardly noticed anything about the artist himself or the work. I sat in the chair listening to the low buzzing noise coming from the tattoo gun. It hummed as the man traced along Tadeas’ wrist. I tried peaking over his broad shoulders to see what he was having drawn as the artist covered it with his hand. “No peaking. I don’t care who you are.” He said seriously. “Geesh.” I said looking for Tadeas to give in and show me. “Not until it is finished, then you
“What do you mean by different?” I chose my question carefully, kicking myself for bothering to ask. “Can I explain that later? It is not easy to explain.” His eyes were begging me to move on. It seemed as if the debate was tearing him apart inside. It enraged me further. He hadn’t given me any real answers. Suddenly, his eyes went cold again, locking his emotions away in their vault. I debated briefly. It seemed my soul knew him. I hadn’t felt anything like this before in the past. I wanted to trust my gut. “I am always honest. I can’t wait for answers. You need to give me something now. Or just stop speaking and leave. You haven’t helped me understand anything you said at all.” My voice allowed my sudden exhaustion to glisten like the rain in the sun. “Understandable.” His voice was empty. I expected him to turn and walk right out the door saying nothing more. “I’m not going about this the right way. It is new to me.” &nbs
My body jolted upward in my bed. I wasn’t sure where I was or what my name was even. I looked around the room breathing heavily before finding a glass of water to my right. I snatched the glass before drinking the contents. I took a few breaths trying to calm myself. I went over the basics first before panicking myself beyond return. My name is Aries, I’m at home, in my bed, alone. I thought slowly before remembering I wasn’t alone before I… fainted? I wasn’t sure what happened. “Tadeas?” My voice cracked slightly as if I drank fire. Nothing sounded in the house. It was strangely quiet. I hesitated before attempting to move my legs, my dream slightly haunting me. Cautiously, I stood onto my feet, holding the bed for support. “Tadeas?” I spoke louder this time. I walked around the house with ease. It seemed I was taking precautions for no reason. I felt better than I had in years. My body was alive and strong. &nbs
I woke to the sound of a bell. The high-pitched ding sounded again. I reached over to the nightstand and grabbed my phone, blinking my eyes to clear my vision. Right away I was slightly confused, I didn’t typically receive naked pictures of women. To my dismay when I had clicked the screen on it opened the message right away. Picture after picture had been flooding the screen. All intimate pictures of various positions of Mia, the woman Tadeas was escorting at the art show. There were at least 6 before I placed the phone back, face down. My blood instantly began to boil. I looked around the room searching for Tadeas. He was no where to be found. Once I was able to gather my wits. I realized I could hear the shower running. I stood, pacing around the room
