I stared at the territorial borders of the largest and the most powerful pack in the entire Northern Territories of Canada. It was morning, although the midnight sun was still at its lowest, peeking from the horizon, casting a faint glow all around. The snow-covered terrain stretched for miles beyond the security checkpoints of the village of Lucania, the territory of the Luceres Pack led by the indomitable alpha, Zephyrus Averoff!
I had heard a lot about his benevolence. Would he lend a helping hand to me as well?
I had no other option than to take the chance. The notorious red wolves were gaining on me, and I had no time to stop and ponder over my next course of action.
Snow crunched behind me and I could sense the pungent odor of the red wolves, although yards away. They had chased me all the way from my home in Silver Trail, a Yukon hamlet to Lucania. I was beyond exhausted, but I wouldn’t sell myself to Alpha Achlys, the leader of the red wolves.
I ran as fast as my legs could carry me, speeding across the snow in the blink of an eye. Speed and camouflage were my special abilities and no shifter in the world could beat me, for I was no ordinary wolf.
I was a Silver Wolf, the only one alive in my pack and in the entire continent.
An excruciating pain hit my heart at the thought of my father and my pack. But there was no time to shed tears or stop. I had to save myself from the evil Alpha Achlys and his twisted plans. I knew his criminal motives despite his tall claims. He needed me for my exceptional hacking skills to break into complex security systems. It was obvious he knew my true identity.
At the tender age of seventeen, I had achieved the impossible. I was one of the selected few members of the Stellar Genius Society that prevented cyber crimes and provided security worldwide.
Inheriting my father’s abilities, I had diligently followed his chosen path. As the Alpha of the Silver Trail Pack, my father protected the last hundred surviving silver wolf members on this continent with a vengeance before Alpha Achlys attacked us. Everything was over in the blink of an eye! My pack members fought instead of surrendering to Alpha Ashlys’s criminal motives.
I didn’t want to flee but fight the enemy, too. If I hadn’t promised my father to save myself and avenge the injustice done to us, I would have fought them until my last breath.
“Hey Brad, did you see something?” A shout from the sentinel check post ahead brought me back to reality. I knew I couldn’t cross the territorial boundaries without Alpha Zephyrus’s permission. But I didn’t have so much time. The red wolves would kill me. They possessed advanced sniper rifles to kill me at sight, even from a distance.
The only way I could escape them was to sneak into Lucania and use my camouflaging skills. Later, I could escape to a safer territory when the threat died.
“Yes, I think it was a gust of silver dust.” I heaved a sigh of relief, knowing my silvery-hued fur was easily camouflaged amidst the snowy backdrop. Yet I wouldn’t risk getting caught. Slowing down, I skidded to a stop behind a boulder, a few yards away from the sentinel check post. There were almost five sentinels guarding the entire stretch, but they were oblivious to my presence.
Should I make a dash for the cottages beyond the check post? I hardly had much time to decide with the red wolves appearing as a tiny speck on the horizon, approaching me in a cloud of snow. I could see Alpha Achlys aiming his XM2010 sniper rifle at me!
Panic settled in my heart and I emerged from my hiding place only to see a sentinel staring at me in disbelief with his phone in hand. “Brad, call Beta Stavros. There’s a trespasser, or maybe a spy!”
I didn’t wait to see him alert the rest of his team. Like a streak of lightning, I raced across the snow, past the sentinels towards the cottages far away. I doubted the stunned sentinels could catch up with me so fast!
“What was that, Carl?” yelled one of them.
“It’s a female spy. Chase her out!” yelled another.
“We have to inform Beta Stavros.” I didn’t stop to listen, whizzing across the snow in the blink of an eye. It was only when I reached the cottages did I stop to catch my breath. But the relief was short-lived as I watched a massive search operation being launched to seek me out. I hadn’t expected that!
“Are you sure you saw a female? I don’t see anyone here,” said one, searching for me at the cluster of cottages far ahead. It would take them five minutes to inspect all of them and reach me. No, this wasn’t a safe place at all. I gave a frantic look around. Where could I go?
As long as I wasn’t injured, I could use all my powers to save my life. It was the gift every silver wolf in the universe possessed. Mind manipulation was one of my favorite tools and I excelled in the sphere, having practiced it from a young age under my father’s guidance.
I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second and tried to manipulate the minds of the members of the search party ahead. One by one, I could plague them with illusions, confusing them thoroughly. My psychic powers have never betrayed me so far.
“There’s no one, Carl. I’m sure you were hallucinating,” said the one I had successfully manipulated.
‘Yes, we’ve done it, Cera,’ said my wolf Lia. I had already experienced my first shift last month under my father’s guidance. Now, a week ahead of my eighteenth birthday, I was an orphan and left totally alone on the entire continent to fend for myself. It was a scary situation indeed. ‘Hurry, there are five more to control!’
I focused my attention on the other members, and they all left one by one, abandoning the search.
“Carl, it was a gust of silver dust,” chuckled another oblivious pack member.
“Carl needs to get laid to clear his mind!” laughed another.
“Shut up, f*ckers. Beta Stavros is on his way here. You better have a solid excuse ready, because I’m sure a spy has infiltrated into our territory. I’ve captured her on my phone.”
“Oh, show us. Is she hot?”
I sucked in a deep breath at the newfound information. The sentinel had captured me on his phone. How would I erase the footage? I could easily hack into his phone, but I needed access to it first.
A commotion at the border made me peer out to check. A gasp of horror escaped my lips at the sight of Alpha Achlys and his pack members. They were arguing with the sentinels, demanding that they hand me over. This place wasn’t safe anymore. I had to seek shelter somewhere else.
“She’s ours. Hand her over to us,” yelled Alpha Achlys in a fit of rage.
“Who? We have seen no one trespassing.”
“You’re lying, Lucerian. You’ll pay for keeping our female forcefully here,” barked Alpha Achlys.
I didn’t wait to listen to their argument. Alpha Achlys had crushed my efforts with his claim. He proved the sentinel right. It was proved I was a spy who had infiltrated into their territory. If I didn’t escape, they would surely seek me out soon.
While the sentinels were busy in the fight, I dashed like lightning to the nearest rocky ledge. My heartbeats sped up as I scanned my surroundings with my binocular vision. I needed to spend a week here until I turned eighteen. Then I could seek my species out and join their pack!
There was a vast frozen lake in a deserted section of the village, with a few houses nearby, although miles apart. Maybe I could seek shelter in the underground caves on the shores of the lake. I ran as fast as I could, my feet hardly touching the snowy ground as I raced towards my destination.
In my haste, I hardly noticed a snowmobile approaching me at a breakneck speed. As I raced ahead, it screeched to a halt to avoid hitting me.
“What the f*ck!” muttered a spine-tingling male voice behind me. It made me stop and turn to check.
To my immense horror, the driver, a muscular, hunky male, toppled over and a gasp escaped my lips. It made him look up. My eyes connected with a pair of electric blue ones and I froze, unable to look away.
‘Mate!’ Lia’s breathy whisper confused me. Was she hallucinating? How could a shifter be my mate? My mate would be a Silver Wolf, right?
“Who runs like that? You could have got us killed,” he scolded me as he tried to get up, all the while holding my gaze. “Can’t you help me?”
I hesitated and stepped forward to help him when a car appeared with the sentinel, Brad, behind the steering wheel. Before he could see me, I whirled around and raced towards the cave, leaving the hunky blue-eyed stranger lying on the ground and staring after me. I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to help him, but it would get me in trouble.
As I raced ahead, my mind was restless with thoughts of the stranger I had just collided with. I just couldn’t forget him.
‘Mate!’ whispered Lia in a state of daze, confusing me further.
Cerelia’s POV I froze, my heart sinking with apprehension. I was suddenly unsure of Zephyrus’s reaction towards me. After all, there was a time when he hated me. “Welcome back to Lucania, Cerelia. How are you now?” he asked in a good-natured way, releasing my mate. I searched his eyes and saw no judgemental look hidden there. Xandrios had truly cleared every ounce of doubt from Zephyrus’s mind. “I’m fine, Alpha. How’s your Luna?” I had always liked Lena more than him. She was kind and forgiving, like a mother should be. “She’s doing fine. You can meet her tomorrow when you officially join our pack. There is a meeting in the morning at around 10. Why don’t you come down to the packhouse with Alex? You can meet the entire pack and join us.” I glanced at my mate, not knowing what plans he might have. I couldn’t go to the packhouse on my own in this condition.“We’ll be there, Zeph.” Zephyrus nodded at my mate and smiled at me before joining Stavros at the bar for a drink. “Are you
Cerelia’s POV The cab sped down the familiar roads and entered Lucania at last. All tiredness and exhaustion vanished, and I gazed out of the windows. The memories came rushing into my mind. They weren’t happy memories. A strange restlessness gripped my heart. What if the pack members didn’t accept me? What if Zephyrus didn’t want me in his pack? That angle hadn’t occurred to me until now. I turned to look at my clueless mate. “Xandrios, what if they don’t want me?” He smiled at me, pulling me to his side. “You have nothing to fear, baby. I’ve cleared your name when I returned to Lucania. Now the whole pack knows your true identity. Why won’t they accept you?” His words relieved me. He hadn’t forgotten while it had totally escaped my mind. “Oh, you remembered? Thank you, Xandrios. What about Zephyrus? Did he change his notion about me?” “Yes. He apologized, and he has agreed to welcome you to the pack. Are you happy now, Cerelia? I sought help from Alpha Alexios to prove your tru
Cerelia’s POV My knees buckled at his heartfelt admission. The intensity of his feelings for me took me by surprise. I had expected anything, but not this. His muscular arms went around me to keep me upright. “Are you alright, Cerelia?” His voice was warm against my ear and I sagged into his chest, maybe to stop him from leaving. “How can I be alright when you’re leaving me, Xandrios?” I looked up to see the fleeting emotions of pain and longing in his eyes. “You know I don’t want to leave you. That’s the reason I was dreading meeting you. I knew I couldn’t go after meeting you once.” He held my face between his hands and drowned in my eyes. “I couldn’t leave without meeting you even.” “Then don’t leave without me.” His arms fell to his sides in defeat. “I have to, Cerelia, but I’ll be back next month.” He flashed a tight smile at me while my heart wanted to howl and protest. How could he leave me for a month? “I won’t survive that long without you, Xandrios. Take me with you,
Cerelia’s POV I watched my mate in awe. How did his speech melt the bitter hearts of two hundred silver wolves? I had no idea, and neither did Alpha Alexios. He smiled at my mate, embracing him for easing his task. It wasn’t easy to convince bloodthirsty wolves who had been agitating for the last two months. Yet my mate made it look like a child’s game. I was glad he could connect to them with his honesty and simplicity, the way he connected to me. “Beta Theodore, do you agree to the rules of the council and the new rules of the pack?” asked Uncle Alarik. “Yes. If no one has a problem, I don’t either.” I released a sigh of relief that all matters were resolved, and there would be peace now. “The meeting is dismissed. Let’s join hands and make Pieria a heaven on Earth for all silver wolves. There’s another good news for the pack members. As a token of appreciation, Dr. Vasiliou has agreed to set up a hospital for all of us in Pieria. We wouldn’t need to go to Thessaloniki for medi
Cerelia’s POV“Xandrios, what the hell are you saying? How can you accuse Nikos?” I faced my mate fiercely, shoving him backward. Nikos tried to protect me, knowing my delicate condition.Xandrios looked even more furious. What was wrong with him? “Why can’t I? How could you move on from me, Cerelia? How could you forget me and accept him in your life?”I gaped at him as realization struck me. Did he think Nikos was my rebound? Did he think I was carrying my brother’s pups?“Are you out of your mind? Nikos is my brother. Why will I move on with him? If you don’t want to accept me and your pups, why are you here? I’m fine. I’m alive. Go away, Xandrios. I don’t need you.”I left him frozen on the spot as tears stung in my eyes. “Bro, please, can you help me to my room? I’m feeling dizzy.” I didn’t look at Xandrios, my heart breaking at his lack of trust in me. Didn’t he feel my love for him? I had endured so much, hoping to unite with him one day. For months, I waited for him to rescue
Cerelia’s POV “Cerelia, how are you today? Aunt Sophia wants you in her clinic for a checkup. She has lots of patients today. She can’t take out time and come over,” said Nikos, coming into my room. It had been over two and a half months since my grandpa died. My pregnancy was progressing well, and I looked pregnant, too. Aunt Sophia still thought my condition was critical, although I wasn’t bedridden anymore. Yet I couldn’t leave the mansion and go to Lucania. We were all imprisoned inside. There was mayhem outside with Grandpa’s supporters demanding justice. They wanted Uncle Alarik to step down and Grandpa’s friend and counselor, Beta Theodore, to take over as Alpha of the Silvermane Warriors. With an impeccable track record of always following the rules of the pack, he was a strong contender. But our family refused to bend to their demands. As Grandpa’s true successors, Uncle Alarik and Uncle Viktor were the rightful leaders of the pack. Every day, their demands grew violent an
Alexandrios’s POV Annabeth frowned as she switched on the lights. I waited anxiously for her to explain. Cerelia’s face kept on flashing across my mind. Was she in pain? Did her grandpa start the purification process? Had she forgotten me? Had she mated with a Silver Wolf? Whose hand was she holding? I was at my wit’s end, with so many questions flitting across my mind. I needed answers. “The black smoke you saw denotes danger. It seems your mate is shrouded in danger. The painful expression on her face denotes health issues. Maybe she too was unconscious, like you, for a long time. It points at a curse, but the white cloud looks hopeful. The evil force controlling your mate is no more. The curse has vanished. She’s free now.” I watched her with confusion, my mind swirling already. I couldn’t understand her. “If Cerelia’s free, can I go to Pieria and rescue her?” Annabeth gave me an agitated look. “No, not until the black smoke reduces. You could lose your life, son.” My heart an
Alexandrios’s POV I opened my eyes and looked around the hospital room I was in. It was torture to be admitted to my hospital under a colleague’s care. I had no idea what happened to me. I suddenly lost consciousness when on my rounds. The tests produced no problem at all. Yet I was in a semi-conscious state for fifteen days, receiving intravenous treatment. I could hear and feel everyone’s concern, but couldn’t move an inch. I was at my wit’s end and so were my close friends and colleagues, Dr. Daniels and Dr. Bradley. They couldn’t pinpoint the cause of my illness from my reports. I could hear Zephyrus and Stavros discuss the possibility of a curse. “I have a hunch that even Cerelia is suffering the same. It’s a mated wolf’s curse, prevalent among the Silver Wolves as a punishment for disobedience. I had heard about it when in Aromania,” said Zephyrus. My heart sank with dread, and I forced myself to open my eyes. I saw the look of surprise on Zephyrus and Stavros’ faces. “Alex
Cerelia’s POVI stirred, but my body ached tremendously. It seemed like the last drop of energy was wrenched out of me. Was I dead? Did Grandpa’s deathly grip or the touch of his sword to my skin kill me?I could hear faint voices near me. It seemed I was far away, unable to open my eyes or move my body. A cold metal touched my chest, and I gasped, filling my lungs with a lot of oxygen. What was it? I tried to shout for help, but no sound came out of my lips.“She’s responding!” someone cried out close to my ears. I recognized that voice instantly. It was Nikos’s. So I wasn’t dead. I was still at the mansion and my brother was with me.“Nikos,” I croaked into the deafening silence. “Water.”There was a shuffle, and someone held water to my lips. I drank a sip and then another. It energized me, and I slowly opened my eyes. Everything was blurred and I could hardly focus on anyone. The room was full of my family members. Was my grandpa here too? Fear gripped my heart as I blinked to ref
