"Why are you me?" I demanded, my hand reaching to wipe my lips. "Jessica..." He called me by that name again. "Can you stop calling me that? I am not Jessica." I corrected him, exasperated. "Will Dustin like this color?" I asked myself, raising the red-colored sweater I was knitting.
"He might like it," A faint smile spread on my lips as I lowered my hands to continue knitting.
Knitting had been the most effective way to kill boredom after my accident. The accident that happened three years ago, confined me to a wheelchair and made most of the exciting things in my life a distant memory. My immobility had caused me to be locked away in this huge mansion.
Sickened by my loneliness, I sought hobbies to occupy myself, and knitting was my best option.
"I might add a blue color to the sweater," I muttered.
As I continued knitting, I heard the door swing open. Lifting my head, I spotted my husband, Dustin Stone, stepping in.
Dustin was a successful billionaire tycoon. In my eyes, he was the most handsome man alive. His dark eyes and deep pink lips were something to die for.
"Pumpkin, look what I'm making for you," I said, raising the half-made sweater. "What color should I add? Would you like blue or green?"
I waited for a response from him, but he ignored me and left. I let out a sad sigh as I was already used to his cold attitude and was about to resume my task when he walked in again with a beautiful woman.
More unsettling was his hand wrapped around her curves, almost touching her ass. My mind filled with questions as they walked toward me.
Who was the woman? Why was Dustin touching her so... intimately?
"Dustin, Who is she?" I asked, glancing between both of them. "Is she a business partner?" I assumed.
"No," Dustin sharply rejected my assumption. "This is my future wife, Maureen Moore,"
Future wife? Did I hear him correctly?
"What did you just say?" I asked, my voice breaking.
"You're not getting it, are you?" He snapped, coldly, before flinging some papers at me.
I gasped as the documents hit my face. My grasp on my knitting pins loosened and they dropped to my unfeeling thighs.
"Dustin, what are these?" I stuttered, tears welling up in my eyes.
"Just shut the fuck up and check!" He retorted, hissing afterward.
"Can she read?" the woman, Maureen, asked with a mocking smile.
"To an extent," Dustin replied, and both of them burst into fits of shaming laughter.
My breath hitched, and my heart quivered, threatening to shatter. With shaky hands, I picked up the papers from my thighs. Through my teary eyes, I saw "DIVORCE" boldly written on the papers.
Gasps left my lips, and fat balls of hot tears began rolling down my cheeks. My heart instantly broke, leaving not a piece intact. Why was the man I loved divorcing me? What wrong had I done? Despite my condition, I had tried being a good wife. Why divorce me?
"Dustin, these papers can't be for me. I think you're making a mistake. I know you love me," I said, trying to convince myself.
"Love?" He raised his brow. "I feel nothing but disgust for you," He spat, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.
"You're disgusted by me?" I sobbed, my hand reaching for my aching chest.
"Lilian, stop with your miserable tears. You know that's exactly what I feel when looking at you. I even think that disgust is an understatement," He uttered, coldly. "You've always been pathetic. Now, you're just useless. It's simply despicable!"
I never imagined that one day, the love of my life, my first in everything, would be telling me such humiliating words.
"My love, Maureen, has saved me from this nauseating life with you. I am happier with her, and she's beautiful and capable enough to care for herself. She's independent, unlike your miserable self!" He growled behind his gritted teeth.
I was stunned and broken by the emotionlessness in his voice. But I had no other choice than to beg. He was all I had.
"Dustin, please don't do this to me," I pleaded, tears escaping my eyes.
"Lilian, just sign the divorce papers," He ordered, then threw a pen at me.
"Dustin, I have lost a lot already... I can't lose you too. I have no one else to turn to," I sobbed, not minding if my dignity was being crushed.
"Well, Lilian...that sounds like a 'You' problem. Just sign the fucking papers and get the hell out of my life, so, my beautiful Maureen can take her rightful place," He whispered, looking at her with a pool of affection in his eyes.
He used to look at me that way too. Before the accident, his love for me knew no bounds. His world revolved around me. There were no limits to his affection.
However, once I got into that accident and became paralyzed, he changed. He became cold, distant, and immature. He gave up on me.
My eyes widened as I watched him pressing his lips softly on hers. He began kissing her passionately. I couldn't remember the last time he kissed me with such burning intensity before.
My chest throbbed as I watched them. It felt like the pieces of my shattered heart were being ripped out.
"Dustin, for old times' sake, please don't send me away," I sobbed, interrupting their kiss.
I might seem pathetic right now, but I was helpless. I was an orphan with no one to turn to. My only parent, my father, died mysteriously before my marriage. I didn't know who my mother was. She left my father with my sister and I was never allowed to talk about her. I never had friends and once I married Dustin, my isolation worsened in the three years of our marriage.
None of Dustin's friends would help me because they hardly knew me. I had no job or savings to help me financially. My disability would worsen my situation.
“Don’t worry…” He chuckled. “I won’t send you away. No matter how useless you are, you still have something I can take.” His eyes flashed with wickedness.
However, I continued to beg, he could take whatever he wanted, "Dustin, please..."
On the other hand, Maureen’s patience was wearing thin, "Why are you so stubborn, you low-life bitch?!" The woman snapped and stepped closer to my wheelchair.
I lowered my gaze, but she grabbed my chin, forcing me to look at her.
"If you know what is good for you, you will sign those papers so you will become useful for once in your life!" She yelled in my face.
Tears streamed down my temples, but I stood my ground.
"I'm not signing anything. I am Dustin's wife and—" Before I could complete my sentence, the back of her hand flew to my cheek.
My cheeks stung from the slap, but then she proceeded to push me off the wheelchair.
My eyes widened as my body hit the cold and hard floor, causing my knitting pins to pierce me.
"Ah!" I groaned.
Struggling, I reached for my wheelchair, but she grabbed it and pushed it away.
"Either you sign the papers or crawl for the rest of your lame life," She threatened. Her eyes burned with rage but then she suddenly held onto her stomach.
“Maureen, are you alright?” Dustin rushed toward her and held her carefully. “Sit down a bit. You are too weak and you shouldn't stress yourself.” He led her to the couch and he made her sit down, facing my direction.
The woman who had been raging suddenly turned weak and pale and I was astonished. My tears flowed heavier, and my body trembled in anguish seeing how he cared for her deeply. But then I needed to get up to face the situation.
"I need my wheelchair, Dustin," I demanded, crawling and dragging my lifeless legs towards it.
He simply laughed and stepped toward it as well.
"Dustin, please give it to me!" I shouted in tears, It was like I was stripped of my shield.
I was hoping for a second that he was going to show me some compassion. But instead, he grabbed the wheelchair, and tossed it further away.
"Dustin!" I cried out, helplessly.
"Sign the divorce papers!" Dustin growled, monstrously.
Lillian's POV.A month later. “How many times are you going to watch that?” Alexander laughed, sitting beside me. “As many times as possible,” I replied, bursting into laughter. I was watching a video of Jessica and her mother confessing everything they had done before disappearing. That was what they had to do, so Alexander wouldn't press charges against them. They knew they had no chance against especially since, Dad, as I called him now, wouldn't be able to help them. Dad had divorced Gianna, and left her with nothing, while he just left a bit of money for Jessica and disowned her. Since he found out that I was his real daughter, he had been more than sweet to me and our relationship had gotten so much better with time. Meanwhile Mrs. McQueen, though kept at arms length, has been so supportive through this pregnancy. She would call me sometimes and give me some tips on how to eat right and stay healthy. Her husband was also remorseful about his harsh judgment but was too bu
Author's POV. Days later, Jessica went to the same hospital that she had been going to for her check up. As she stepped into the building, she touched her face and winced a little in pain. “Fuck,” She cursed. She walked over to an office and slipped in without knocking. In a few hours, she slipped out as if nothing had happened. She touched her face again and there was no pain anymore. This discovery made a smile appear on her lips. As she headed to the parking lot, she pulled out her phone to call her mother. “Hello?” Sha muttered as her mother answered. “How was it?” Her mother asked. “Ma, everything went well,” Jessica smiled, getting into her car. “Are you sure? Is there any pain left? Do you want to go abroad again?’ Mrs Sinclair inquired, her voice tinged with worry.“Ma, I'm trying to get Alexander back and returning to Singapore isn't something I want to do. Why do you give the worse ideas?” Jessica gritted, closing her car door and turning on the engine. “I just gave
Author's POV. Lillian lifted her head from the sink and looked, really looked at Mrs McQueen. She could not understand how a loving gentleman like Alexander had been born by such a bitter mother."What? Why are you staring at me like that?" Mrs McQueen snarled, hands perched on her waist. "I don't know if you know this but Alexander really loves you. He respects you too as his mother but I don't think you love or respect anyone but yourself. You are trying to ruin his happiness with your own hands," Lillian said. "What happiness? Do you think life with someone like you is happiness? Alexander will be miserable if he gets married to you and he will regret choosing you over me," Mrs McQueen accused. Lillian leaned against the wall, suddenly realizing what the matter was all along."You are jealous. That's it, right? You don't even care about Jessica, not really. You are jealous of how much Alexander loves me and you get afraid everytime he considers my feelings before your own." Lil
Lillian's POV. "Baby, you are glowing," Alexander pointed out breathlessly, bending his head to run his tongue across my chest. He licked the chocolate stain, licking his way to a nipple and curled his tongue around it.My hands went high above my head, and he tossed the empty chocolate wrapper behind him, holding my hands in place. I arched my back, moaning when he sucked on me lavishly."Alex. . .the bed. . .I can't. . ." Even with him holding me up, my knees were beginning to shake. "I got you," he whispered, his hot breath sending chills all over me. He started walking backwards with me attached to him, scattering kisses all over my neck. When he got to the bed, he sat on it, lifting me and placed me across his hips. He didn't break concentration, continuing to tease me while dragging the rest of the teddy down to my waist."My baby is going to have a baby," he said, drawing the leftover chocolate on my chest down to my stomach. "When I think of your belly round with my baby,
Lillian's POV. In the taxi, I was still thinking about my near encounter with Jessica. She wouldn't know why I was in the hospital but I didn't want her suspecting anything. Too much was at stake for me to be careless."We are here, Miss," the driver informed me and I alighted his taxi after paying him on the app. I sent a text to Alexander to let him know I was home and stretched out on the couch in the living room. Doctor Malcolm said stretching was good for me anyways. He also told me to exercise more and eat more healthy.Alexander called instead of texting back and I was already smiling even before I heard his voice."Hello, darling. How did your appointment go?""It was okay. You really didn't have to call, Alex. I know you are very busy." Yet I was smiling so hard my cheeks were hurting."Don't say that. I can never too busy for my freckles. Have you had something to eat? If not, you can ask the chef to make you something."I glanced at the meal plan chart Doctor Malcolm had
Lillian's POV. Doctor Malcolm was explaining all the things I had to start doing as am expectant mother when Alexander came into the room. He had been excited when he left the room before but now, he wasn't."Why was the lawyer calling, Alex?" I inquired. He suddenly remembered he was not alone in the room, forcing himself to smile. But I knew him well enough to know that it was not a real smile."It's good news actually but I'll tell you in the car. Let's finish up with Doctor Malcolm first," Alexander replied, keeping me in suspense. "Okay. Sit down then." I still kept my eyes on him, unable to relax when I knew he was hiding something from me."So, Doctor, how soon can she get registered for antenatal classes?" Alex asked and the good doctor laughed at his eagerness."You both just found out that you are expecting a child. Don't be in a hurry to get her registered for anything, Mr McQueen. For today, just go home and have a talk with each other, celebrate. . . you do want this c
Author's POV. Same Night, Prison Dustin wasn't very popular in jail except for getting bullied, but after his argument with the basketball players, everyone chose to ignore him. He summed it up as them being jealous of him."Dustin, you have a visitor," the warden said, looking down his nose at him. Dustin already knew it was his lawyer and his hope was alive again. He was updated on the official date of his court hearing and reminded to be of good behavior despite being brutalized by inmates. Either his lawyer didn't like him or was scared of him because he refused to look him in the eye when speaking."I'll behave, anything to get me out of this rotten hole. As long as you promise me that I will get out as soon as possible.""The odds are in our favour, Dustin and I haven't lost any case in all my years of being a defense attorney. Just keep your slate clean for the next fifteen days and you have nothing to worry about.""Time up," the warden announced and the lawyer packed up h
Author's POV. After throwing up, Lillian felt more better but her vision was so blurry that the walls looked like they were spinning. She tried to stand and missed a step but fell into Alexander's arms."Jesus, Lillian!" He exclaimed, holding on to her tightly. "You are burning up. Come on, let's rinse your mouth."He flushed the toilet first and led her to the sink. She cupped her hands under the running water, rinsed out her mouth and washed her face. She regained some strength and could stand on her own without his help."Baby, you scared the shit out of me. Are you okay now? Do you need anything?""I need. . .I need to sit down." Her legs were weak and she didn't know how long she could keep standing. Without asking, Alexander lifted her off the ground and carried out of the bathroom. She rubbed her face on his shirt, feeling a lot better just from being close to the man she was in love with. He laid her down on the bed, watching over her closely."You are sweating. You need to
Author's POV. Jessica slammed her door behind her so loud the house shook. She ran to her desk and pushed everything off, anger welling up within her.She flung a notebook at the wall, searching for a way to get rid of her anger."It's not fair, it's not fair, it's not fair," she kept repeating, tearing her room apart until something gave way within her. Anger turned into sadness, disappointment turned to despair and she fell on her knees, shedding tears into her hands."That used to be me. I used to be the only one Alexander had eyes for. Now. . .no, I can't let Lillian steal everything I have built alongside Alexander all this while."She crawled about on her knees, searching for her phone in the scattered room. She found it at the foot of her bed, hidden by the broken table lamp. She dialed a number and sat on her heels, waiting for the other person to come to the phone. The call connected and the person at the other side did not sound very happy."What is it, Jessica? I'm busy,
