Stretching as he returned to his human form, Gabriel smiled as he looked at the large deep pool created by a mountain stream. He took a few quick steps forward and dove perfectly into the clear water. With a single breath he was able to reach the middle of the pool. The water felt amazing rushing past him as his powerful arms and legs carried him forward. Coming up for air he took a deep breath and looked around. This was usually the only place that let him have a few minutes of peace. The water was freezing cold, but because of his wolf it felt amazing after the punishing workout he forced on himself this morning. Gabriel and his wolf, Conri, were beginning to feel more and more restless the longer they went without finding their mate. They had reached a point that they were rarely talking. They could still feel each other but Gabriel did miss conversing with Conri and always feeling him in his mind.
At thirty years old, Gabriel was one of the oldest wolves that was still without a mate. As the Alpha King he especially needed his mate to help keep him grounded and to help calm his wolf. For the past twelve years, since he turned eighteen, Gabriel has met thousands of she wolves, visited countless packs, and still seemed no closer to finding his mate.
Conri had been pushing him more and more each day that they needed to find their mate and luna until the past week or so. About a week ago, Conri started to shut himself off from Gabriel. Gabriel could still feel that he was desperate to find their mate and some emotions, but they hardly spoke anymore. Gabriel could still shift into his wolf form, but Conri stayed mostly shut off even in wolf form. Gabriel was starting to wonder if his time to find his mate was running out. Alphas that do not find their mate many times lose control of their wolves and have to be killed when they turn feral.
Not that he has ever been known as a soft or friendly person, but Gabriel could tell that he was becoming more aggressive and simple things were causing him to overreact. He had heard the whispers among some of the elders. They were worried that his wolf would eventually take over completely. Gabriel knew that his beta and warriors would stand behind him, but he was starting to worry as well. Gabriel was starting to worry that Conri was shutting him out to keep him from feeling most of the effects of them starting to become feral.
Gabriel was just starting to swim some relaxed laps as he heard Dolph, his beta Hunter’s wolf, running up. Quickly shifting into human form Hunter yelled out, “Gabe, your sister has been trying to reach you for hours! Why aren’t you answering,” Hunter said as he ran up to the edge of the pool.
Instantly alert Gabriel replied, “Damnit. I put up a block this morning. I needed to try to clear my mind. I can feel that Conri has been getting more and more restless even though he is trying to block me. I guess when I blocked him, it caused a block for everyone. What has happened,” Gabriel asked as he began swimming quickly toward Hunter.
Reaching down a hand as Gabriel reached the edge of the pool Hunter helped pull Gabriel up. “Your nephew, Sebastian, and some of the other boys were playing on the other side of the mountain. They were ambushed and Sebastian was taken by hunters.”
“Dammit, I have told him a thousand times to quit going outside of the valley and our lands to play. They know the hunters are trying to make a move to expose us. When did this happen,” Gabriel questioned as he began running toward town. He quickly shifted into his wolf and Hunter followed suit while never breaking stride. As wolves they are able to cover the distance much quicker.
All wolves are large, but Gabriel’s wolf was almost twice the size of an average male wolf. His wolf is also solid white. Both of these show that not only is he a strong alpha, but the solid white of his coat reflects that he is the Alpha King. White wolves have always been viewed as special or holding power, and this is especially true with shifters. White wolves are more closely related to the Moon Goddess, Celeste. White wolves carry her blessing and a larger portion of her magic. Due to the size of his wolf Gabriel was able to quickly cover the distance between himself and town.
“We think that he was taken roughly four hours ago,” Hunter replied through mind link.
Gabriel and Conri growled at the knowledge that their young nephew had been in the hands of hunters that long and that they had that large of a head start on them. “Surely it didn’t take four hours to find me. Why do they have that big of a head start on us,” Gabriel demanded through the mind link.
“I’m sorry sir. We were unaware of the issue until the boys that escaped came back. Sebastian is the only one that already has his wolf so he was the only one that could have contacted us. The other boys said that he was hit with a dart and dropped immediately. I’m assuming since we haven’t heard from him that they have dosed him with wolfsbane.”
Gabriel nodded that they had heard but did not respond through the link. He and Conri were livid and processing the information while thinking about what to do next. How dare those hunters attack Sebastian and his friends, and think that they can come near his pack lands. As soon as they got Sebastian back, Gabriel would be assigning more guards to border patrols and expanding their borders. He would also petition the council about removing the threat of the hunters. There is no reason to try to keep a peace that they repeatedly break.
“Hunter, I am leaving you in charge while I am gone. I will only take a small group with me because we need to move fast. Tell my sister and Marcus to be ready. We will travel as wolves since we can move a lot quicker. I am assuming that the hunters are traveling by car and that will slow them down in the mountains. Tell Axel and Megan to take one of the SUVs, load a complete first aid kit, extra clothing, and start toward Lord Rotterford’s land. I am willing to bet that is where they are taking him. They can be backup if needed and the car will be close by incase we need it for transport or clothing.”
“Yes sir,” Hunter replied as they came upon the town. The town looked almost more like a small city when you looked at everything that they had. They had most of the stores that you would ever need or want. There was a general store for groceries and other items, a salon, clothing shops, a coffee shop, a bakery, restaurants, movie theater, a hospital, and many others. Most of the people in the town and around the castle were wolves, but there were a few humans, other shifters, magical creatures, and witches. Some were mates, some were the descendants of those that had been here and worked with the wolves for many generations, and some just wanted to live a simple life away from others.
Main Street was mostly clear as they continued thundering toward the castle. Thankfully most tended to walk and traffic was not a huge issue. Being werewolves and other super naturals, it was usually much quicker to not drive, plus you get to enjoy being outside. Vehicles were mainly used if there was bad weather, if someone needed to move or carry a large amount of stuff, or if traveling long distances. The castle was huge, after being added on and updated for centuries. The castle itself and the immediate grounds around it housed over five thousand wolves and their families. Many of these are wolves from other packs that are sent here for training, and the elite are offered a chance to stay as a part of the king’s army.
As they ran up the castle stairs Gabriel could see his sister Sarah pacing the front door waiting for him. He could see that she was upset and that she had been crying, but she also looked like she was trying to hold herself together. Gabriel knew that she desperately wanted the strength and comfort of her mate, Michael, right now but was unable to contact him since he was away on a mission.
As soon as Sarah saw him she lit into him, “Damnit Gabriel! Why didn’t you answer me? My poor baby has been in the hands of those —.”
Quickly shifting back to human form Gabriel pulled his sister into a hug. “I’m sorry. Conri and I were having issues this morning, and I closed down communication with him. I didn’t realize that it would shut out the whole pack. We are leaving as soon as Michael gets here. We will get him back. I promise,” he said while mindlinking Michale to hurry up.
Nodding Sarah stepped back wiping her eyes. “I'm ready. Hunter told us a few minutes ago.” Wrinkling her nose Sarah looked Gabriel in the eye, “Please put some clothes on or change back to Conri. I know all of the women here think you look amazing or something, but you are my brother. You standing there like that is just eww,” Sarah said as she turned away and waved her hand gesturing toward her brother. Gabriel chuckled as he changed back to Conri. He felt a little better since his sister could chastise him about his lack of clothing. He needed her to be able to focus since he did not know what might have happened to his nephew. Sarah was a strong female and Gabriel respected her.
Maybe it is because Conri is controlling more of his thoughts or maybe just because he spends so much time going between both forms, Gabriel really doesn’t think about clothing. This has been a point of contention between him and his advisor, Marcus, for years. Marcus has finally realized that Gabriel is not going to change. If he wants Gabriel to wear something particular then he makes sure to have it ready and with him.
Typically nudity among wolves is not an issue. Depending on your position some wolves are constantly having to shift between human and wolf forms. There are many stashes of clothing in the woods in case someone needed something to change into after shifting since most remove their clothes before shifting. Gabriel never understood how wolves in movies and stores somehow magically kept their clothing or that the clothes just shredded out of the way. Yes, if you shifted while dressed and you are a large enough wolf your clothing might shred away from you, but you are more likely to get caught up in the fabric and have to tear the material with your teeth and claws wasting precious time.
Looking up Gabriel saw that Sarah had already changed into her wolf Lupe and that Phelan, Marcus’s wolf, was coming up the castle’s steps.
“Are you ready,” Gabriel asked through the link as Conri started toward the caves that would let them cut through the mountain and save time.
Sarah and Marcus responded that they were as they fell in behind him.
Gabriel sent orders to his delta Jason and lead warriors and guards to update them on what had happened, who was going out, and through which avenue. He also requested an increase in the number of guards and warriors on patrol in case this was a distraction for an attack. They responded back that his orders would be followed. Jason responded that they would have a group ready in case Gabriel, Marcus, and Sarah needed additional backup.
Feeling confident that everything was under control, Gabriel shifted his focus back to getting Sebastian back and ending the hunters.
With her mind working and going through all of the information that she had just learned, Emily was a little startled when she opened the kitchen door and was quickly bombarded by one of the maids. “Oh, thank goodness you have returned Miss,” Mary dithered as Emily snuck in through the kitchen door. “Your uncle has been in a rage for the last two hours since you were not here to meet Lord Rotterford this afternoon. We were starting to worry that you had left permanently,” Mary said while ringing her hands. “Don’t start with that again,” Lucy said, shaking her large wooden spoon at Mary and rolling her eyes. Lucy was the head cook, and she had always looked out for Emily. “Grab her jacket and hang it up in her room,” Lucy said, gesturing with the spoon. “I told you she was just hiding out till that horrible man was gone,” Lucy said as she turned back to stirring the pot that she had on the stove. “I
Emily took a deep breath as she approached her father’s former study. She used to love coming to this room when she was a little girl. It did not matter how busy he was, her father, Lord Farrington, would always make time for her. He would sit her on his lap and let her help him look over contracts and paperwork. By the time that she was eight years old, she knew more about how to manage the estate, shipping crops, and other financial matters than most adults. Most children learn how to read using books made for children or computer games. Emily learned how to read by sitting in her father’s lap and reading through contracts, supply lists, and other paperwork he had on hand. Her nanny would fuss all the time that she was not getting a “proper” education for a young lady. Her father would pretend to agree for a while and shoo Emily off with her nanny and various tutors to get her proper education. He
“I'm sorry sir,” Emily heard George, their old butler say. I have not been able to locate Miss Farrington.”“Well look harder! Do you have any idea what her stunt today could have cost me? I--”Emily quickly knocked and opened the study door to save poor George. He had been with their family since her father was a baby. He did not deserve to be berated for her little rebellion this morning.Looking toward the study door her uncle’s eyes quickly zeroed in on her. “Where the hell have you been? I have been looking for you for hours,” Emily’s uncle raged at her. “You were supposed to be here for lunch to meet your fiance!”Trying to rein in her temper, Emily replied in a calm manner, “I&rsqu
Gabriel and the others quickly made their way through the caves that the pups traveled through. They were easily able to follow their scents to see which route the pups had taken that morning. Gabriel had Marcus stopping and checking that various shields and spells were still in place as they traveled through the caves. Thankfully, with everyone focused on their mission and alert to possible attacks, Marcus and Sarah were not wanting to engage in idle chatter. Normally the two of them would never miss a chance to try to get under his skin about something. They had all grown up together. They knew that he was the Alpha King and they respected his position, but they were also not afraid of him like so many others. Gabriel was focused on the mission of getting Sebastian back, but his mind was also filled with other thoughts and worries. Gabriel had to make sure that he was not leaving the valley and to
Emily looked at the screen on her phone again to check the time. It was now just a little after 2:00 in the morning. She knew her uncle would be back up in a few hours to get her, but she could not find the motivation to pack. Everything that happened yesterday and that her uncle said kept replaying in her mind. When he first locked her in her room she had cried from the shock, pain, and unfairness of it all. How had things gone so wrong? Once she had collected herself she had raced to her cell phone to try to call for help, but of course her uncle had been smart enough to have the service turned off. She had no way of knowing when he had the service turned off on her phone since she had left it in her room all day yesterday while hiding out. He probably had it turned off when he realized she had left it in her room on purpose. Now her phone was nothing more than an expensive clock and music player.
At 6:00 sharp Emily was standing ready in the center of her bedroom when her uncle flung open her bedroom door with great flourish. Seeing her standing there packed, dressed nicely, and ready had the smile slipping off his face. Seeing the smile slipping off his face brought a smile to Emily’s face.“Good morning uncle. I hope that you slept well. I followed all of your instructions. I have everything packed and ready just like you asked me. I’ll ask Lord Rotterford if I can have the rest of my belongings shipped to his estate later since I only had three suitcases to pack everything in,” Emily finished brightly gesturing to the three suitcases lined up neatly beside her.Emily watched as her uncle’s face turned bright red. He opened and closed his mouth twice before he could grit out through clenched teeth, &ldqu
Are you here yet? Gabriel sent to Axel and Megan. He, Sara, and Marcus were just now coming up on the old witch clearing. They referred to that clearing by that name because centuries ago a coven of dark witches used to meet here and perform rituals that required sacrifices, typically human or some form of magical creature. The Witch's Council that came into power 500 or so years ago, had since outlawed the use of black magic. They had spells set to monitor if anyone uses black magic. If you were caught you could be stripped of your powers. Yes. We will be there in three minutes. We got here a little early and did some scouting around Rotterford’s. We might have overheard something interesting. Megan replied. Is it about Sebastian?
He’s gaining on you. Hurry. Faster. Faster. You need to run faster, Emily repeated to herself as she ran through the woods. She was running as fast as her legs would carry her. Emily was leaping over fallen trees, ducking low branches, dodging dense areas of underbrush, but she could still hear him chasing her. The faster she ran the closer he sounded. Emily was too scared to turn around. She swore that she could feel him breathing on her neck. Just as she felt like she could not run anymore and her legs were giving out, Emily tripped over a log that she tried to leap over. As her foot caught on the log she stretched her arms out to catch herself. As the ground was rushing up to meet her, Emily braced herself for the hard impact that she knew was coming.Gasping, Emily sat up quickly with her arms stretched out in front of her. It had just been a dream, she realized. Sighing, Emily lea
“She’s waking up,” Emily heard a femine voice yelling right before she heard the pounding up feet and then her hand being held tightly. “Emily. Emily, can you hear me,” her mate asked in a trembling voice. The sound of his voice and the pain that was in it broke her heart. It took more energy than she would have ever thought, but Emily finally forced her eyes open. As soon as she could focus, she found her eyes locked with beautiful relief filled green ones. “Hi,” she managed to croak out with a small smile. “Hi beautiful,” Gabriel replied huskily as he leaned forward to kiss her forehead. “How are you feeling?’ “Thirsty and tired for some reason. Rica said that I have been out for three weeks.” Gabriel helped Emily to sit up a little so that she could take a few sips from the cup of water that was pushed into his hand. “Yes. The wound hit you harder than anyone thought. Agatha thought that she had lost you for a moment, but Rica pulled you back. We just couldn’t get you to wa
I kind of figured we would have to do something like that. Do Gabriel and Conri know? Emily asked grimacing. Nope, Rica said. How much trouble are we going to be in for doing this?Loads. They might even kill us if we make it. Do you think that my grandmother would have suggested this if she thought we wouldn’t. No, but I also know that things can go bad quickly, Rica said hesitantly. Why are you so hesitant? Do you know something? I know a lot actually. There just isn’t anything that I can tell you right now. That was helpful. I know. All I can say is that we do need to survive. For Gabriel and Conri? And others…Rica said carefully. What others? I can’t say yet. Okay…so do you not want to save Agatha? I do want to save her, I just need you to be strong and to get us through this. Promise me. I promise. Should we tell Gabriel and Conri? I think we have to. They are going to have to give a lot of their energy to Agatha to heal us. Okay. Do you want to tell them? No.
“Angela, how are they,” Emily asked as soon as they made it back into the valley and then rushed to the hospital where all of the injured were receiving help. Emily was relieved to see that everyone that they passed at the hospital did indeed have minor injuries. “Not good,” Angela said, quickly swiping a tear from her cheek. “I can’t keep them in this state much longer, and as soon as they are no longer in this frozen state, they will quickly bleed out.” “Can’t I pull energy and give it to them to help them heal,” Emily asked sadly, as she looked at her grandmother and Agatha. Angela shook her head. “No, the bullets have done too much damage for them to recover from.” “Could we do surgery while they are frozen to repair the damage to give them a fighting chance,” Emily asked, refusing to give up. Angela sighed and slumped in a seat by Agatha’s bed. “Even frozen, the surgery would kill them. Rotterford knew what he was doing when he shot your grandmother. He missed her he
“You are right,” Emily’s uncle said, sighing heavily. “I know that saying ‘I’m sorry’ or ‘I was wrong’ will not fix the mistakes that I have made.” “Then what do you want? The only reason that you are not dead is because my mate was hearing you out,” Gabriel growled. “I wanted Emily to know the truth, and I think I just wanted to clear my conscience.” “You came all of this way so that you could have a clear conscience,” Emily asked skeptically. “And so that you could know the truth,” her uncle said with a small shrug. “I am dying, so if you decide to kill me it won’t matter,” he laughed bitterly. “That might be better than what is coming. I have cancer in case you were wondering.” “I can’t heal you,” Emily said quickly thinking her uncle was hoping that injuring Lord Rotterford and finally telling her the truth would make her help him. She felt bad thinking that, but she also knew that she had to try to help Agatha and her grandmother if possible. She couldn’t help her uncle t
“What do you mean,” Emily asked. “I have made a lot of bad decisions in my life. I know that I can never make what I have done to you right, but I can at least make sure that you are able to live the life that you have now.” “What have you done to me? Do you mean the part where you called me a whore for taking my chances with Lord Rotterford over you,” Emily cried as she pointed to the man that was still withering in pain on the ground. “Or do you mean, where you stole from myself and my parents and forced me out of my own home to pay your gambling debts?” Emily’s uncle looked pained as he admitted, “I have done way worse. I was the fool that told the hunters where they could find your mother. I was blinded by jealousy of my brother. I was hoping that I could make it look like he was the one that told them where she was that day then she would run to me for comfort.” “You wanted to have me killed so that my mom might turn to you for comfort? How could you even think that she woul
Emily wanted to close her eyes as she heard the gun fire, but she found that she couldn’t look away. Knowing that you are about to die is a funny thing. It is almost like time stands still. You have all of the time in the world to think about things, but in reality everything happens within seconds. Since Rica had tried to come forward when Jenna first placed the spell on them, Emily’s eyesight was much sharper. She could see every detail of the bullet as it came barreling toward her, but at the same time her mind took this opportunity to think about all of the things that she would regret. Emily hated the fact that she and Gabriel and Rica and Conri never really got a chance to enjoy each other. Hopefully they know how much they love them. Emily also hated the fact that she couldn’t save her grandmother. She had only come out of hiding after all of these years because of her. Just as the bullet was about to reach her, Emily heard another shot fired. Her eyes changed focus just in
“What in the world is that,” Emily asked. She didn’t realize that she had spoken aloud till Gabriel answered her. “I’m not sure what Rotterford has planned. I think that I hear something metallic mixed in with the sound of the trees moving, snapping, and falling.” “I hear it too,” Hunter replied, taking a step forward. “I don’t suppose that giants are real,” Emily asked, only half joking as she watched more trees shake and then give way to whatever was making their way toward them. “They are real,” Gabriel said, “but this doesn’t sound like a giant. If it was a giant you would know it.” “What do you mean by that,” Emily asked. “Giants are old,” Agatha said. “They are elementals. They are made of rock, water, and ice. If one of them moved you would know. When the ones made of rock move it makes the news because they have either caused an earthquake or a landslide.” “Oh,” Emily said as she felt the ground vibrating under them. I still think it could be a giant. It’s not, Ric
“Remember our deal,” Lord Rotterford said as Jenna fought to not roll her eyes while looking into the two-way mirror that he had given her to use to communicate with her during her trip to meet with Gabriel and the others. . “I remember,” Jenna said, trying to mask the frustration on her face and while trying to add a little tremor to her voice. “I know that my life depends on this.” “If you cross me, I will make sure that you die a very slow and painful death,” Lord Rotterford growled out one last time as they disappeared from sight. With a quick scream of frustration, Jenna threw the mirror at a tree and watched happily as it shattered. Hopefully she would get an additional seven years of bad luck for breaking that mirror, she thought ruefully. Rotterford threatening her with a slow painful death was a joke. He must not realize that she already wished that she could die. The only thing that kept her going was thoughts of Alice. She couldn't lert Alice down. If she didn’t help
An hour later everyone had made it to their assigned locations as far as Emily knew. She was waiting with Gabriel, Hunter, Agatha, and the rest of their core group. Always worried about an attack Gabriel was making sure to keep Emily blocked by him, Hunter, Samuel, and Axel, but they were also trying to keep it from looking obvious at the same time. Emily and Rica tried not to roll their eyes at the guys worrying about protecting them. She also knew that there were warriors all around them even though she could not see them. A few of the witches like Breanna, Agatha, and others could aparate warriors as needed, but due to the numbers needed, Gabriel and the others decided to find another way to have warriors able to be in multiple locations unseen. The solution that they found was a small charm that would allow the warriors to be invisible for up to four hours. This time frame allowed enough of the warriors to be set up and prepared if the hunters attack. The rest of the warriors wer
