“How was your date?” Uncle Niko suddenly asked making Cassandra jolt slightly from surprise. As soon as she realized that her uncle was behind her, she wiped her hands against the apron she was wearing and turned towards him.
There was a mischievous grin hanging on his face, it irritated her, so she clenched her jaws to reply.
“It was good.” She lied, suddenly at a loss for words, it was nowhere near good, but starting up fires right now will only make Blake more pissed, and it was not like she expected her uncle to care about it if things were sour.
The wedding will go as planned no matter what she feels, that much has been established.
“Dinner will be ready in a second,” she said hoping he would leave, Niko nodded his head, as he walked towards the door, stopping for a second. “Join us at the dining today.”
He left.
Cassandra simply stood there wondering if that was a good idea, she had never joined the family for any meal, she always ate her meals in the kitchen, just like her aunt had instructed her.
“You are not part of the family, and don’t ever try to act like one.” Mercedes had declared, her voice loud and clear. “You are no less than a servant, and servants eat their meals in confinement.”
Cassandra shook her head, as she arranged the plates on a tray, since her uncle had invited her himself, she was sure he had something important to say, and her aunt wouldn’t be so mad.
She arranged the table, and Lena climbed down the stairs.
“Something smells good.” She murmured as she pulled a chair for herself beside her brother, “Cassandra, what is for dinner?”
“Um… Creamy chicken pasta.” Cassandra answered softly, as she went back into the kitchen to bring the meal, she was arranging the table, while the family gathered in the dining.
“Cassandra will be joining us tonight for dinner,” Uncle Niko suddenly announced, making all of them, except Lance gasp lightly.
“Why?” Lena was the first to ask, she seemed irritated even by the idea.
“I have an important announcement to make.” He answered and Cassandra dished the last meal before sitting at the last table in the dining.
“What’s so important that you have to bring dirt to the table?” Mercedes asked her husband as she occasionally glared at the girl. Cassandra pretended as though she didn’t notice, the deathly glare, her aunt and Lena threw in her direction.
Lance on the other hand was so quiet.
“Cassandra is getting married.” He announced and there was an uneven gasp in the room.
“Married?” Lena blurted and then she let out a mocking laugh, her mother on the other hand was too stunned to speak. “Seriously? Wow, so who is the unlucky person?”
“I am curious about who is willing to marry such a dull girl as well.” Mercedes answered.
“You remember that deal I was telling you about?” Niko queried, and they both nodded. “That senile old man who found errors with everything I did, I figured he had a grandson he desperately wanted to marry off. I had to set them up, and now he has agreed to invest in the company.”
Cassandra felt her heart clench, he had just called the older McKnight, a senile old man… truly, and Uncle Niko wasn’t a human being. What did she expect from a man like him? Someone who could make a maid out of his brother’s child?
“You got her engaged to a man like that?” Aunt Mercedes sounded offended. “A rich man? You should have introduced a responsible person like that to Lena instead.”
“He is rich indeed, but he isn’t responsible,” Niko explained. “I did my research before I made my decision, his grandfather isn’t just trying to get him engaged for no reason. Rumors have it that he has a mental illness.”
Cadenza’s grip on her spoon tightened, as the food stopped halfway through her lips, her head snapped towards her uncle in disbelief, and Lena winked playfully at her.
How could he do something like that? Getting her engaged to someone who had a mental illness but that also explains Blake’s abruptness. Cassandra felt sorry for him, she wondered how hard life must be for him with such overwhelming sickness.
“Lena is the only daughter I have, I would love for her to be happy, and on the other hand, Cassandra will be satisfied with living with her husband.” He continued. “We will be inviting them for dinner tomorrow, Mr. McKnight wants the wedding to happen as soon as possible, so I implore you all to be on your best behavior.”
“I don’t know about the rest of you, but I don’t support this wedding.” Lance suddenly declared surprising everyone.
“What are you doing?” Uncle Niko asked in surprise.
“It’s disgusting that you are willing to sell out Cassandra for money, yet you’re here clamoring about how you would like Lena to be happy.”
“That’s your father you are talking to.” Mercedes snapped but Lance was far from done.
“Cassandra is your niece, and not some stranger, when are you going to see that?” He rasped, shocking everyone except for Cassandra who knew the reason for his outburst. “She deserves just as much concern as Lena. She is your brother’s daughter, and you shouldn’t mindlessly give her off to a madman just because of some benefits.”
“What?” Niko muttered,
In anger, Lance pulled back his chair and got out of his seat, shooting a glare in the direction of Cassandra before storming off.
Lance was so angry that he didn’t even sleep in the house, but Cassandra was grateful his father wasn’t paying much attention to him.“That witch,” Mercedes snarled. “I am sure she seduced him, that’s why.”“I told you, Daddy,” Lena added. “They had been too close, and little he would be influenced by her.”Cassandra could hear their voices from the kitchen as she did the dishes, a small smile hung from her lips, she was secretly grateful for the small chaos in the house.“Rest assured now, child.” Niko’s voice was a little faint. “She will be married soon, and Lance will adjust to that.”“He isn’t picking up the phone,” Mercedes complained her voice a little shaky. “What if he does something stupid?”“Well, I hope he does,” Cassandra said in a while whisper as she ran the faucet again.Lance didn’t come home through the night, his mother had been worried, but he didn’t come home neither did he answer any of their calls, even in the morning, he didn’t come home.“That boy…” Mercedes m
Uncle Niko finally managed to get through to Lance. However, Lance had made it clear that he would not come home if they were serious about arranging Cassandra’s marriage. The conversation between them was heated, Niko putting Lance in his place. Despite the tension, Cassandra felt a sense of relief and gratitude that Uncle Niko was not going to cancel the wedding because of Lance. For the first time in years, she was finally going to leave the family.“Are you done?” Uncle Niko asked as Cassandra finished arranging the table. She turned toward him, wiping small beads of sweat from her forehead.“Yes,” she replied quickly.“You should get dressed and ready. I’m sure your aunt can handle the rest,” he said.Cassandra wrinkled her nose in annoyance. She had already done all the work; there wasn’t anything left for her aunt to handle.“The McKnights will be here in fifteen minutes,” Uncle Niko continued, stroking his chin thoughtfully as he studied her. “I figured you might not have a
“What were you expecting?” Blake asked, bending slightly to remove his shoes. Lena felt her cheeks flush with embarrassment.“Blake, you shouldn’t tease your sister-in-law,” Mr. McKnight said with a nervous smile, his eyes watching Blake cautiously. He suspected Blake might be planning something. His unusually obedient demeanor was out of character, and it made Mr. McKnight uneasy. Blake rarely passed up an opportunity to stir up trouble.“I’m not teasing,” Blake replied smoothly. “I was just asking if I met her expectations.” Turning back to Lena, he added, “Do you think there’s anything I’m lacking?”A nervous smile spread across Lena’s face as she tucked a few stray strands of hair behind her ears.“I don’t think you’re lacking anything,” she replied, her voice a bit unsteady.Blake smiled faintly before walking over to Cassandra. She stood silently, watching them; she wondered if Blake found her attractive at all. He had barely spared her a glance during their conversation, but he
“You should smile, I don’t want the world to think that I’m forcing you to do this.” Uncle Nico said as he pressed Cassandra’s shoulder, smiling at their reflection in the mirror. Cassandra looked at herself in the mirror she was all makeup, she wore expensive jewelry, an expensive wedding gown, expensive shoes, and gloves. Everything was so expensive and this was the first time they were getting her something of value. She was only allowed to wear the second-hand clothes of her cousin Lena, it was different today because she was getting married.A tear escaped her eyes and then slid down her cheeks, Niko frowned when he noticed it.“Don't tell me you are crying, a bride is not supposed to cry on her wedding day, do you know how many girls dream of such a fabulous wedding? And you should think about my efforts to get you here, are you going to waste them all now?”He snapped and she shook her head. “No…” she muttered wiping her face almost immediately and carefully so that she di
Blake rolled his eyes, Cassandra had acted beyond his expectations, he thought she was some timid woman, who would act like he had ordered, but it seemed like she had something up her sleeves, and she wasn’t as shy as he presumed. He glared at her, but her face remained hidden from him.Well, he would hate to admit it, but he was wrong to have called her plain-looking.She was nowhere near plain…The reason she had once appeared to have been looking plain was probably because her dress didn’t suit her style, but seeing her dressed up in a wedding gown made his heart raced slightly.Blake hissed at the warmth that nestled in his chest, he disliked it.He couldn’t let himself be influenced by his emotions again, he had barely gotten a hold of himself after everything Natasha had done to him. Even though they were different, she was just as capable of hurting him as Natasha did.He would take no chances.“Congratulations, Boss,” some of the workers at his company said as they approached
Cassandra was grateful for Blake’s sudden intrusion, she felt a sigh of relief escape her as soon as the cool air of the evening brushed her face.Blake still held on her hands tightly and they walked towards his parked car. A small smile tugged at her lips when she recalled the look on Lance’s face as Blake walked her off.She hadn’t seen him so frustrated before and she was glad, seems like Blake wouldn’t have a problem standing up for her when it’s necessary. But then she had greater worries…She didn’t know what Blake would expect from her… especially tonight, and every other night, she didn’t even know what to do or how to behave. She had impulsively agreed to the terms of a wedding without any knowledge on how to be a wife to a man, especially one that she didn’t know.“Get in,” he ordered as the chauffeur opened the door, she held her dress as he helped her into the car. The thud of the car door, made her realize that there was no turning back. She was married.
"I still think that boy is too good for that brat," Mercedes muttered, folding her arms. Her husband rolled his eyes in exasperation. "He's far too handsome to have a mental illness. Did you see how stylish and elegant he looked throughout the wedding?""I agree with Mother," Lena chimed in, nodding eagerly. "I feel like if given time, there could be a spark between us. I just know it.""You're too young to talk about sparks and love," Niko snapped, glaring at his daughter. Lena frowned in defiance."So is Cassandra," she muttered under her breath. "I'm just three months younger than her. We're practically the same age.""I told you, Cassandra is different," Niko shot back, his irritation mounting as he kept his eyes on the road. He had indulged in more than three glasses of wine earlier, and now his vision was hazy. "You shouldn’t compare yourself to Cassandra. She doesn’t have a future.""Honey, you have to admit you made a mistake," Mercedes interjected, her tone firm. "You need to
The car slowed as it approached the grand gates of Blake's mansion. With a smooth motion, the gates parted, and they drove inside. Cassandra sat in silence, her thoughts spiraling as she tried to process what her husband had just told her.Ninety days. He was giving her ninety days to change his mind. But how? He hadn’t said what he expected from her, nor had he given her any clue about how to accomplish it.“Are you not getting out?” Blake’s voice broke through her reverie. Startled, Cassandra turned to find his hand extended toward her. Hesitantly, she placed her hand in his, letting him guide her out of the car.The cool night breeze brushed against her face as she stood, taking in the sight before her. She knew Blake was wealthy, but the mansion exceeded every expectation she had. It was enormous, the kind of house she had only ever seen in family-centered television dramas.“Are you coming in?” Blake asked, noticing her hesitation as she stood frozen, taking it all in.Snapping o
Blake folded his arms as he rested his back on the chair, he later decided on meeting with Natasha in a restaurant they agreed to meet in this particular restaurant by 11 A.M, but Blake came about an hour earlier.Just because he couldn’t bear to stay home after what happened. He had gotten unnecessarily angry and because of that he had caused her to be injured. But at the same time he didn’t want to be too soft with her, she takes his kindness for granted and that’s why she had the effontery to lie to him. He never expected to feel so bad that she lied to him, he doesn’t feel anything towards her, but why did it irritate him so much? Why was he so angry about it and why was he so eager to know the reason she lied? He shouldn’t be feeling this way.He clenched his fists tightly, he knew that she was cheating on him, but he didn’t want to confirm it yet just because he didn’t want to ruin the image he had of her in his head. She was kind, sweet and charming. Someone who isn’t capab
She had never been fake to him. He was too angry to be concerned about what happened last night. Could it be his mental illness triggering out? Blake stood up and left angrily climbing up the stairs. Cassandra quickly dropped the cutlery she held in her hands and rushed after him.“Blake…” She yelled as she went after him, her legs doubling over the stairs and she slipped falling down. Blake heard the thud and then turned towards her. “Why are you running after me?” He yelled when his eyes combated the blood on her knees. “Is it so hard to leave me alone??” He grabbed her waist and hauled her up. Holding the edge of her dressed that was soaked with blood. Just how hard did she fall to bleed like this. He placed an arm at the bed of her knees and lifted her from the floor and started proceeding towards his room.He kicked the door open, and dropped her on the bed, disappeared into the bathroom..He came back almost immediately with a first aid box in his hands, and he qu
"Good morning…" Cassandra whispered as she descended the stairs, her voice barely above a breath. Blake was already seated at the head of the table, sipping his coffee with the same composed demeanor he always carried. She hesitated for a moment, her gaze dropping to the floor, unwilling to meet his eyes. How did he do it? How did he wake up every morning as if nothing had changed, as if last night hadn’t unraveled everything? While he sat there, seemingly unaffected, she had spent the entire night drowning in the weight of her thoughts—thoughts of him, of them, of the evening that had started with hope and ended in regret. But regret wasn’t enough to erase what she felt for him. No matter how distant they had grown, no matter how complicated things became, she knew she would always choose him.And Lance… he couldn’t keep her chained to his threats forever. He may have relished the power he held over her now, but one day, that power would slip through his fingers. And when it did, she
Cassandra sat in the car staring outside the window, watching the lights fade into the scenery every time they passed by a street pole. Blake glanced at her, noticing something different. He wondered if he handled Natasha in the right way. He wouldn’t deny the fact that he still loved Natasha.No. He could never love any other woman the same way he loved Natasha. But he didn’t want to hurt Cassandra as well, and as it is, it seemed that Cassandra was just using him as well. “What was so important that Lance wanted to talk to you about?” he queried hoping she would be honest with him. So he could at least trust her. “I apologize for his behavior again.” She muttered taking her eyes from outside and then staring ahead. “What was so important that he had me leave for?” Blake was insistent on finding out. He wanted a reason… even if it’s a little bit, he wanted a reason why he could trust her. And if she gave him that, he would be sure of what to do. “E-Em…” she stuttered, clenc
“Is she your wife?” The woman asked curiously; she stood toe to toe with Cassandra, who looked confused; her shaky eyes darted towards Blake, as if she were asking for an explanation.“It’s none of your business.” Blake shoots out as he nears Cassandra, gripping her arms and trying to get her into the car.“Stop!” The woman yelled as she jumped in front of them, spreading her arms wide, without allowing them to move closer to the car. “I will never let you go. You need to talk to me.”“I am telling you, Tasha.” He complained with a frown on his face. “I am married, and I can’t spare a word with you.”“We all know that you don’t love your wife.” The woman whose name was Natasha announced her voice was loud enough to draw attention from the people in the area. “Unless you want to lie to yourself, Blake. The only person you have ever loved and will ever love is me. The only thing I am asking from you is that you allow me to explain myself. Just look at how unhappy you are.”“Let go of me
She glared up at Lance who had a smug of satisfaction on his face, he relaxed into the seat confidently. “We should place some orders.” He chuckled. “Your generous husband even left us some money to pay. How kind is your husband. I initially thought rich people were selfish.” “What do you want?” Cassandra muttered, her voice dangerously low. She could feel tears making way to her eyes, she could guess what was so important to him that he needed to say when her husband was away. “I hate to keep him waiting.” “Oohh… someone is trying to save her face.” Lance suddenly leaned back into the table, catching her hands. “Let me tell you how this is going to play out. If Blake ever finds out about us, he will not stay married to you. He will leave you as fast, no matter what you tell him, he will leave. And then do you think there will be anyone who would be interested in a woman who was divorced by a billionaire because she was sleeping with her cousin?” Cassandra felt her body trembl
“L-Lance….” Cassandra muttered her voice shaky, her bulging eyes nearly rolled out of their socket as she stared at her cousin in disbelief. How the hell did he find them there…And what gave him the effontery to think he could join them casually. Blake noticed the shift in Cassandra’s emotions, and his eyes narrowed. He realized that whenever her family was around, she was always uncomfortable but when this particular cousin was with them. She shakes visibly, and now he was curious. He wanted to know the reason.“I hope you don’t mind me.” Lance asked with a playful smirk at the edge of his lips and Cassandra’s eyes darted towards Blake as if she was waiting for him to protest or something.“I don’t.” Blake answered which was quite surprising to Cassandra because she knew how much Blake dislikes him. “What are you doing here? It’s quite a surprise to meet you outdoor unless you’re stalking us.”Lance chuckled.“Come on.” He chuckled even more. “I am a medical student. I usu
“We are done with the assessment,” Mr. Benedict said as Blake came back into the office, and he strolled towards the center of the room, and took his sit where his wife was seated.“Was it hard?” he asked curiously and Cassandra shrugged.“I am not too sure, but I did my best.” She muttered with an unsure smile on her face, she then leaned in to him and whispered the rest of the words. “I am a bit nervous.”“Don’t worry, you would do great.” He assured her, his gaze falling to her plump lips that looked ripe and swollen. Blake swallowed, the improper thoughts of the previous night slipped into my mind, and he felt himself stiffened again.Shit! Those thoughts were flooding back in again, and so he moved away from her, receiving the files from the principal, and his eyes narrowed and then widened briefly. Cassandra was nervous and didn’t know what to do from his reaction, and perhaps she failed.“What does it say?” She asked curiously.“You passed.” He handed the file to her, the pass
“No…” Cassandra muttered, as she grabbed his arm, turning him towards herself. “I need to know if you’re okay or not. Do you feel sick?” “Just leave. I am fine.” He argued trying to push her away, but she slipped and fell in between his legs. Blake squeezed his eyes shut, he tried to push her away but it was already too late. Cassandra’s face flushed bright red as she felt something hard pressed around her butt, she stared down at Blake in realization who evaded her gaze. “Um…” she muttered as she tried to get off. “I think you should go and bathe.” “Yeah, or do you want to bathe with me?” he teased and her eyes widened. “I don’t mind.” “N-No…”she muttered as she quickly got out of the bed and before she got to the door knob, he caught her wrists.“Before I forget,” he drawled pulling her away from the door. “Last night, you had a weird dream. I want to know what it is about.” Cassandra froze hiding her eyes away from Blake scared that he might figure it out if he looked at her.
