“Why can’t we go with you?” I asked again, following him in his seat, looking like my daughters wanting to get an answer from him right away.

After I ignored Anya and Dylan, as if wanting to give me privacy but couldn’t leave, they went to the farthest part of the study room and pretended to be busy talking about the books stacked on the shelves.
