Chapter Fifty-four

Alice's POV

Mrs. Salvador was bugging me about Alek once again as we were seated at the dinner table.

I attempted to respond to her politely, but her hints were getting to be too much for me to handle. I could feel the tension building within me. Alek was my only brother, and while we were not connected by blood, I loved him dearly.

"Who is this Alek?" you ask. Mrs. Salvador questioned me once again, her voice filled with mistrust.

I said, attempting to keep my voice level, "He's my brother."

She said in jest, "Your brother?" But you two don't even resemble one another.

Under the table, I could feel Liam's fingers placing a quiet supporter's touch on my thigh. I inhaled deeply and made an effort to explain.

"We didn't grow up together, but he isn't my biological relative. Since his family welcomed me when I had nowhere else to go, he has been to me like a brother.

I could tell Mrs. Salvador was ready to ask me another question since she didn't appear to be happy with my response. But
