CHAPTER 151

He had something to himself he wanted to keep a secret and this was a big secret indeed. Whatever it was, it seemed to hang its ugly head towards Varya’s disappearance.

I came closer to him, my words spiced with hostility. “What did you do, Theo?”

For this time, Theo did not utter a single word. He simply glared at me with such hatred in his eyes, but there was something else within them—shame … or was it guilt? Then, finally, he spoke his voice being as low and quiet as a whisper.

“What had to be done was done, so whatever you saw me doing was part of the package.”

These words left me feeling the same as if the wind had just punched out of me. I could sense the density of them, the facts disguised behind the label.

Theo had done something, something that altered everything. And now, the only thing he was attempting to do was to find a rational explanation for what he was doing for himself and me and everyone else.

“What does that mean?” I demanded. “What did you do?”
