"I'm okay here, Dad, don't worry about me," Erik answered with a chuckle while speaking on the phone with his father, Fidel, who was in Canada with his mother.

"Give me that phone, let me talk to that boy," came the voice of his mother, Aurora, which made Erik chuckle softly.

"Mom, don't argue with Dad anymore. The two of you are all you've got there," he teased, laughing lightly while continuing to separate his white and colored laundry.

"What exactly are you doing there, and why haven't you come back yet? It's been almost a year since you said you’d return. When are you coming back? Your grandfather won’t stop asking when his favorite grandson will be home. Your father and I don’t even know what to tell him," his mother went on, her ranting making Erik laugh softly again.

"Mom—"

But his mother quickly cut him off.

"Why are you laughing at me? Hey, Enrique, have you forgotten your responsibilities here? To your grandfather's business? Your cousin is struggling to handle all the work. You should be grateful you’re not like other people who have to struggle just to find a job and work themselves to the bone for a good life. Everything is already set up for you, and yet you act like it’s nothing!" his mother continued her scolding.

At that, Erik bit his lower lip to suppress another quiet laugh. He knew that if his mother heard it, her rant would only get longer.

Well, he was used to it.

That was just how his mother had always been since he was a child. And if she didn't get mad or scold him, he would know that something was wrong.

She was right, though—it had been almost a year since he left Canada and returned to the Philippines. That was supposed to be to court and marry Keira, his childhood best friend, who was now happily married to a wealthy businessman, Charles Salveron.

That plan had been for Nadine’s sake.

His ex-girlfriend from Canada.

Like him, she was also a Canadian citizen. But his family—especially his grandfather, Solomon—didn’t approve of what he had done.

That was because Nadine used to be the girlfriend of his cousin, Albert, who had taken his own life after she broke up with him.

He knew that Nadine wasn’t to blame for his cousin’s tragic decision. But he also couldn’t fault his family for being deeply hurt by the loss of a loved one.

His plan had been to marry Keira so he could claim his inheritance from his grandfather, Solomon. The money he would get would then be used to pay off Nadine's father’s enormous debt to a friend.

Did he really love Nadine that much, to the point of being willing to do something so selfish for her?

At that thought, Erik shook his head.

He had even planned to drag his best friend into his mess because of his own greed.

Once again, guilt gripped his chest, an unshakable weight that always resurfaced whenever he thought about his past plans.

He had yet to personally ask for Keira’s forgiveness. But from God? Not a single night passed without him seeking it in his prayers.

"Enrique!" His mother’s sharp voice snapped him back to the present. "Are you even listening to me? What are you doing that makes you sound so uninterested in what I’m saying?"

"Mom, I’m sorting out my laundry, so I can’t focus on our conversation," he replied with a chuckle. "Tell Grandpa that I'll return when the time is right. For now, I’m still busy here and enjoying being an architect."

He heard his mother let out a deep sigh over the phone before speaking again, this time in a gentler tone.

"Alright, fine. And I’m sorry if I scolded you again. I know this has always been your dream since you were little. Your father and I just feel like it’s a waste to pass up the good life waiting for you here. You can always practice being an architect anytime, but your grandfather's business is what you really need to focus on and learn about," she said.

Erik smiled at her words. "I know, Mom. And don’t worry, even though I’m here, I still find ways to help Robert manage the business and the farm."

That was true. Thanks to the internet, he could still communicate with his cousin Robert about running their grandfather’s dairy factory, as well as the farm where they sourced the milk used for producing dairy products like cheese, yogurt, butter, and many others.

"Mom, I have to go now. I need to start doing my laundry, and after that, I have to clean the house. Saturday is the only free day I have," he informed her.

"Alright, but you should find someone to do the cleaning and laundry for you. You already work hard all week—why do you still have to do these chores yourself?" his mother said, now sounding more concerned.

"Oh, Mom. That’s why I love you. And I guess that’s also why Dad loves you so much," he teased.

"Flatterer. Alright, take care of yourself there and don’t neglect your health," she reminded him before finally hanging up.

Shaking his head with an amused smile, Erik placed his phone on his bed and continued with his tasks. After a while, he started the washing machine with his white clothes.

He had specifically bought an automatic washer, even though their old machine from before they migrated to Canada was still working fine.

It was just more convenient. While the laundry was running, he could cook and clean the house. It saved him a lot of time.

Like always, he cleaned and cooked while waiting for the wash cycle to finish. Once the machine beeped, he would simply hang the clothes to dry.

As he swept his room, his eyes landed on the old cabinet in the corner. He remembered that his mother had once placed all his old belongings there—books, notebooks, and even his high school yearbook.

At that thought, Erik felt an odd, sudden rush of emotion in his chest.

He walked over, opened the cabinet, and saw books, old notebooks, and posters that had once decorated his bedroom walls. But he wasn’t interested in those.

He reached for a thick book with a hard cover.

It was their high school yearbook.

Flipping through the pages, he searched for his picture and his Salutatory Speech.

A chuckle escaped him as he stared at his younger self, as if it were the first time he had ever seen an old picture of himself from high school.

As expected, under "Ambition," it said: To be an Architect

No regrets—he had achieved his dream.

Then his gaze shifted to another page, where a beautiful face greeted him, making him smile.

Mia Licerio, their Class Valedictorian.

The girl he could never beat in any subject, no matter how hard he tried. She was just that smart.

Ambition: To be a Veterinarian.

A strange feeling stirred inside Erik.

Where was Mia now?

Where was the only girl who had never once shown admiration for him whenever she looked at him?

It was true—she was the only girl who seemed completely immune to his charm.

"Give that to me," the elderly woman living with them said as she took the washcloth from Mia’s hand. Mia had been using it to press warm water against the bruises on her arm. Bernie, her live-in partner, had hurt her again earlier. "I just don't understand why you can't leave that demon of a man, Mia! Look at yourself! Face the mirror! Don't you feel sorry for yourself when you see your reflection? Because I do—I feel so, so sorry for you!" The old woman's voice finally broke as she said the last words. Absentmindedly, Mia turned to face the mirror. And at that moment, her tears began to fall again. Yes, she pitied herself. She had pitied herself for a long time. But as the saying goes— She had fallen because of Bernie, so she had to endure because of Bernie. "I... I don't have any money, Aling Ising. Even if I wanted to leave, I don't have a single cent in my wallet," she admitted, and with that, she broke down into sobs. The elderly woman immediately pulled her into a compas

Erik smiled as he stared at the picture of the woman whose F******k profile he was viewing—none other than Nadine. He quietly gauged his feelings. Does it still hurt? He smiled once more before shutting down his laptop. He was happy now, and he was happy for Nadine as well—as he was for Keira. And from what he could see, Nadine seemed to be happy too. It looked like she had eventually learned to love the man her father had wanted for her, despite the short time they had been together. It had been a year since he was last in a relationship. As he had said before, he wanted to focus on his career first, and that was exactly what he did. It was Saturday, which meant he had no work. He woke up late—as he always did. He needed rest too. Erik headed to the kitchen to prepare something to eat. But he wasn’t in the mood to cook, so he decided to go out and buy food instead. His feet led him to a small eatery. He loved their *sinigang na bangus*, so that’s what he ordered. After eating

  • SWEET SINNER (ENGLISH VERSION)   “LONG TIME NO SEE”

It was almost dark when Mia arrived in Manila. If she hadn’t been stuck in traffic, she might not have reached her destination this late. Standing outside the old house, Mia remained still, silently gazing at it. A long time had passed, yet she still felt a small pang in her heart as she looked up at the large house before her. Finally, Mia moved and pushed open the rusty gate. She knew that by tomorrow, many of her neighbors would be asking why she had suddenly returned and what had happened to her. A bitter smile formed on her lips. With how she looked, maybe no one would even ask. Maybe they would just talk about her behind her back. That’s right. Because ever since her mother, Nanay Rosita, got sick, and she was forced to make desperate choices to afford her treatment, not a single person around her had truly understood—except for the old woman who had now passed away. Mia took out a key and unlocked the large front door of the old house. Naturally, it was dusty and filled

Erik let her stay in the living room so they could continue their conversation there. After letting her sit down, he went to the kitchen. He didn't take long and soon returned with a glass of cold orange juice and a small plate of buttered cookies. "My officemate sells these. Try them, they're good," he offered, referring to the cookies on the plate. Mia nodded and took one with a smile. "They really are delicious," she said, suddenly realizing how hungry she was. When she finished the cookie, she took another one. "I'm sorry you had to come all the way here so late just to talk to me. Mrs. Ramos only told me about you earlier today. I didn't know you’d be coming tonight," Erik explained, glancing at the bag of rice, salted eggs, and tomatoes beside her. Mia let out a soft laugh. "I'm the one who should apologize to you. The truth is, I really need a job. The place I’m supposed to work at told me I have to let the bruises and wounds on my face and body heal before I can start," she

AS Erik said, they ate delicious food because he took her to an expensive buffet restaurant. At first, she felt hesitant because she was only wearing simple walking shorts and a t-shirt. But when the young man assured her that her outfit was fine, she no longer protested."Thank you for the delicious dinner," she said as Erik dropped her off right in front of her house. He nodded. "So, see you tomorrow? Should I pick you up so you don't have to walk?" he asked. She chuckled softly. "Come on, our houses are just one block apart. I’ll just walk," she replied and was about to get out of the car, but Erik's next words stopped her."Didn't you leave behind the sack of rice and salted eggs you brought earlier? I'll just come over, and I'll bring some warm pandesal and liver spread. You'll provide the coffee, okay?" "NAY, I have good news for you," Mia said as she found her Nanay Rosita busy watering her ornamental plants in their yard. As always, she pushed open the iron gate and approached her adoptive mother, bowing to take her hand and press it against her forehead in a gesture of respect. "I already know. Your classmate mentioned it to me," her mother said with a smile as she looked at her. Mia’s well-shaped eyebrows furrowed. "Classmate? Which classmate?" she asked curiously. "That handsome young man? Fidel and Aurora’s son?" her mother replied. It was then that Mia fully understood what her mother meant. Along with that realization, an uncontainable giddy feeling surged through her, accompanied by a bright smile she couldn’t suppress. "Ah, are you talking about Erik?" Even though she already knew that was who her Nanay Rosita was referring to, she still chose to say his name aloud. "I'm leaving now," Mia said softly, glancing at her Nanay, who stood by the door with a gentle expression. The morning light streamed through the open window, casting a golden hue over the small but tidy living room. Her schoolbag hung securely over her shoulder, its weight familiar yet grounding, as if anchoring her to the moment. Though this was part of her daily routine, there was always a lingering comfort in the way her Nanay saw her off each day. Nanay Rosita, with a warm smile, nodded as she stepped forward to press a tender kiss to Mia’s forehead. "Take care," she murmured, her voice laced with quiet affection. It was a simple gesture, but one that never failed to reassure Mia, wrapping her in a sense of security that she carried with her throughout the day. No matter how busy or overwhelming school got, she knew that at the end of it all, she would return to this same love and warmth waiting for her at home. Mia returned the smile, offering a small nod before turning on

  • SWEET SINNER (ENGLISH VERSION)   "DREAM"

PRESENT DAY...As agreed upon the night before, Mia was the one to provide the coffee. She carefully selected the beans from her favorite local roastery, ensuring they were fresh and aromatic. The rich scent filled her kitchen as she ground them, heightening her anticipation for the morning ahead. It wasn’t just about the coffee—it was about the quiet significance of the gesture. She wanted the first thing Erik tasted that morning to be something she had chosen, something that carried a part of her. As she poured the dark liquid into a thermos, she imagined his reaction—the way his lips would curve into that familiar, thoughtful smile, the same one that had always made her heart stutter, even years ago. Mia wasn't sure if she was more excited about the breakfast she would share with Erik or the simple fact that she had made the plan earlier that morning, which now left her feeling unexpectedly lighthearted. There was something about having certainty in this moment, in knowing that he
