DON'S POV

"Quite the romantic setting you've chosen, Donnie. I always dreamed of fluorescent lighting for my wedding," she quipped with her voice dripping with sarcasm as she glanced around the room.

"And here I was thinking you preferred the glow of streetlights," I retorted, unable to resist the opportunity for a comeback. Our banter was an introduction to the vows we were about to exchange, it was like a dance of words that was as much a part of our fake union as the rings we hadn't yet thought of buying, more less, exchange.

The magistrate cleared his throat, a signal for us to focus. "We are gathered here today to witness the union of Don and Accalia in marriage, which is an honorable estate..."

As he droned on about the legalities of marriage, I found my attention wandering back to Accalia. Her presence was a vivid splash of color against the drab backdrop of the office. She was a challenge, a mystery, a contradiction that I found myself wanting to solve.
