It's been four hours fifteen minutes since I was dumped in a room against my will like a bag of pickles.
My eyes had barely left the digital clock that sat on the table beside the bed and I could not even imagine myself shutting my eyes for a minute.
Rays of sun had started to trickle through the windows before I heard a knock on the door and then the sound of a key unlocking the door.
I stood up with my arms crossed over my chest, expecting to see Luca but was greeted with an unfamiliar female face.
“Good morning ma'am. My name is Maria, I'm your personal maid and I will be assisting you.
“Mr Alessandro is waiting for you in his study. He requested that you freshen up and be out in twenty minutes,” she said without meeting my eyes.
The woman looked to be in her mid thirties or so. There were so many questions I wanted to ask but I didn't think she was the best person to answer them so I shut my mouth as quickly as I opened it.
I had opened the bathroom door when I saw that she was following closely behind me. I turned to face her with a questioning look.
“I'm to assist you with your bath ma'am,” she said, still keeping her head bowed.
“No thank you, I can manage on my own, I said before slamming the door shut.
I couldn't figure out how to run a bath so I took a shower and came out.
My thoughts were all over the place, what city was I in? How far is the house from the road? How many men in black could be standing outside? Would Luca use the gun if I tried to run?
Maria handed me a fresh set of underwear and a sundress which I changed into before following her downstairs. I checked for possible exits as we walked down the hallway.
The house was absolutely magnificent with chandeliers at every couple of steps in the hallway.
Maria knocked three consecutive times before opening the door and gesturing for me to go in.
“Don't keep me waiting,” his voice said, making me shiver.
It was the dining room. With a brightly lit room, I couldn't help but notice how handsome he was.
In fact, this man looked like he just stepped out of the front cover of a magazine.
“Sit, help yourself to some breakfast,” he said in between sips of coffee. I couldn't help but scoff at his words.
“I would like to go home. I don't know what this whole thing is but I certainly do not want a part in any of it,” I said, still standing some distance away from him.
In a blink of an eye, he had pinned me to the wall on the side of the room with my hands held securely by his. “When I give an order, you listen, do you understand me, Nazlynn?”
My lips trembled as I fought back tears that were pooling at the back of my eyes. I mustered as much strength as I could and slammed into his groin with my knee.
He doubled over and I took that as my cue to flee.
I burst through the doors, running so fast that my vision was blurred. So fast that I didn't notice the men at the end of the hallway until they held me by my arms and dragged me back to the dining room.
Luca was seated in his previous position when I was forced on a chair to his right. His brown eyes were void of any emotions but I could tell from his look that he was not impressed with the stunt I had just pulled.
“Nazylnn, do you know how much I paid for you?” He asked, cocking his head to the side like he was talking to a child who wouldn't listen.
I did know. Two hundred million. That was an insane amount of money, money that I would have never even dreamt of hearing about in my life.
“I am not going to satisfy your sick sexual fantasies, you disgusting pig. I would die before I let you touch me. Put a bullet in my head if you want.” I spat out, masking the fear I was feeling at that moment.
“Feisty, like the color of your hair. I like it,” he said with amusement, like he had not heard what I said.
He stood up from his chair before lowering himself above me so we were at eye level.
“I could have you begging for me while your legs buckle from pleasure in two minutes if I wanted to,”he said in a dangerously deep voice.
“But that's not why you're here chica bella.” My legs twitched on the seat.
“I paid for you Nazlynn which means I can do whatever I want with you. In six days, you and I would be getting married then we would move to Italy because that is why I permanently reside.”
“I do not have time for a honeymoon but I believe the mansion in Italy is more than enough for you.” He said it so casually, one would think we were discussing the weather.
“Marry you? What the fuck do you mean marry you?” I asked, making an attempt to stand up but he pushed me back down.
“It wasn't a bloody request!”
I turned my body so I was facing him completely. “You would have to kill me first, Luca. And if you manage to force me to marry you, you can best believe that I'll try to run off every single day while I make your life a living hell.”
Excitement danced in his eyes. He was enjoying this. “Are you sure about that, Nazlynn? I mean, I wouldn't want anything to happen to Enzo if I were you,” he said shrugging.
My blood ran cold. He couldn't be serious. I stared into his eyes for signs that he was bluff but there was none.
He picked up his phone and dialed a number, saying something in Italian before ending the call.
One of the men that dragged me back walked into the room with a tablet in hand and gave it to Luca before walking out. Luca tapped on the screen before turning it to me.
I would have fallen to the floor if I were standing. I let out an audible gasp in horror.
It was Enzo.
I fell on my knees before I could even stop myself. “Please, he's just a kid, please don't hurt him.” “Oh Nazlynn, come on. I'm not a monster, I would never hurt a child,” he said, his voice softening briefly.“That’s only because my men have no problem doing that,” he ended, shattering my hopes. My eyes flickered back to the screen. It was a live video, the man walking beside Enzo pulled out his gun just enough for me to see it. I held a shaky hand to my mouth.“He's just a child!” I screamed. “Are you guys even human?”“It's quite simple actually, you know. I needed a wife and I made arrangements to get you, all you have to do is show up in six days and act like the perfect wife. You do all that, your brother is safe. It's a win-win for us, right?” He asked, not at all sounding like he was asking. My bottom lip quivered but I forced the tears away. “I'll see you in six days then,” I said, standing up to walk away.“You will go with me to meet my family tomorrow and then to the brid
“Hi, it's so nice to finally meet you.”“I'm Elena, this is my twin sister Jenna, the blonde douche is Miguel, freak in the glasses is Sabrina, José and Samuel are the two over there by the garden, Elena is the little eight year old and Mathias is somewhere around the house,” a girl around my age said immediately the door swung open.“Uh-”“Elena, don't do that. Where's Padre?” Luca asked without sparring any of us a look. The group of people parted to make way for him to walk into the building.“He's in the basement. He said he had to do some garbage disposal.” The girl, Elena, replied without looking at him. Luca walked through the wide hallway before taking a turn that I had not noticed. The group of people ushered me into the house and into the living room that had my jaw dropping. The interior decorator of that place needed to be given an appreciation payment if we're being fair.“Hi, I'm Nazlynn,” I managed to say between nervous breaths. “Hi Nazlynn,” about five voices echo
Luca's POV It took all that I had for my mouth not to drop open in shock as I took in the woman that had just slapped me. My eyes turned red. I wrapped my hand around her throat, pinning her to the wall. “Who the fuck do you think you are Nazlynn?” I yelled out in rage. Her eyes quickly watered up as she clawed against my arm, begging for release. “In my world, no one even dares to look at me the wrong way. I am the most feared mafia leader so do not think I would hesitate to put a bullet in your head because we're to get married.”“There are a million women like you that I wouldn't even notice if you were switched during the wedding. You're my wife, not my equal. Get that through your thick skull.” I growled out, pushing her away from me. Nazlynn staggered before regaining her balance some steps away from me. I had not wrapped my hand tightly against her skin so it wouldn't leave a mark but now, I could see her skin turning red from where my fingertips had pressed down on. “I h
“I don't have the time nor the strength for your games Nazlynn, your tears don't move me. This was your plan wasn't it? To create a scene in front of people and make them believe I was forcing you into this, am I right?” He asked, rage brewing beneath his eyes. He was wrong and I tried to show him that by shaking my head to every word he said. “I am having an extremely shitty day, you don't want to add to it,” he said in a controlled voice. “You will try on the dresses and make a choice. You will get married to me in three days, Nazlynn, that is not up for debate. Neither of us want your brother to get hurt, am I clear?” I froze as an image of Enzo getting shot on his way to his room in Atlanta filled my head. I bobbed my head in response. He signed, pressing his fingertips on his temple. “Can I please have my phone back?” I asked in a shaky voice. He gave me a frustrated look. “You'll have it after the wedding and it will be on some terms.” He took a seat on the armchair oppos
Luca didn't come back until early hours of the morning.I couldn't sleep after we got home because I was still feeling nauseous so I stayed in bed, tossing and turning. My throat felt clogged, crying didn't help because all that did was give me reddened eyes. Sighing, I pulled a robe over my silk night dress and waddled down the stairs to grab a glass of water. The person who selected the clothes in my room must be ignorant about the nature of I and Luca’s wedding because the choice of nightwears were clearly seductive.I was wearing the most decent looking one and even this was made out of a flimsy material that barely covered my ass.Pressing my fingertips on my temple, I tried to find comfort in the dark, empty and quiet. I heard the faint screech of the door before Luca's voice came floating through the air alongside a man whose voice I didn't recognise.I crouched down on the counter slightly even though I knew that he couldn't see me from where he was. “Is she asleep?” Luca a
Nazlynn’s POVThe sounds of birds chirping must have been what woke me up. My eyelids fluttered open and I winced at the bright light my eyes were met with. My consciousness slowly returned as memories of the previous day's events flooded back. The wedding, the allergic reaction, Luca carrying me...Luca.My hand instinctively reached out to the other side of the bed, expecting to find a warm body. Instead, my fingers met cold, crisp sheets. A twinge of disappointment settled in her chest and I cursed myself under my breath for thinking that way. Wait, did I sleep for a whole day? The thought made me jerk up in a frenzy. A sharp, searing pain shot through my head, eliciting a cry that echoed through the room."Signora! Are you alright?" A panicked voice called out. Footsteps hurried across the floor, and a moment later, a familiar woman appeared at my side."I'm fine, Maria," I grumbled, pressing my palm against my forehead in an attempt to null the pounding feeling. "Just a split
"Were you eavesdropping?" he snarled, his dark eyes flashing dangerously. I straightened, refusing to be intimidated. "Not at all, I just got here." Luca's jaw clenched, a muscle ticking in his cheek. "What are you doing here Nazlynn?" "Looking for you, actually," I replied, crossing her arms across my chest. "Thought you might want to check on your bride after her near-death experience. Talk about delusional." Something flickered in Luca's eyes…guilt, perhaps? Then his expression hardened again. "You seemed fine to me." "No thanks to you," I shot back. "What kind of ‘husband’ doesn't even…” "The kind who has a business to run," Luca interrupted coldly. "In case you've forgotten, this isn't a real marriage and I couldn't care any less about you." The words stung more than I cared to admit. “That’s a little hard to forget when you're treated like a piece of furniture." Luca's eyes narrowed. "What do you want, Nazlynn?" "My phone, you promised to give it back after the wedding,
“Hello? Is there anybody on the line?” Enzo’s soft voice said again. It seemed like it had been months since I last heard his voice.“I think it's a wrong number,” I heard him say in a low voice to someone.Just when I felt like he was going to end the call, I opened my mouth to speak. “Enzo, it's me.”“Nazlynn?” He said, sounding shocked. “Sis where have you been? I have been calling and texting since forever, I even had someone check the house for me. What's up, is everything alright?” He asked, concerned. My breath hitched in my throat and I wondered what they found when they got to my house. My father, halfway dead or drunk, or his blood stains across the floor with no body to trace it to. “I…”“You know what? That's in the past, did you change your number? I haven't received a call from this number before?” I could picture him furrowing his eyebrows in confusion the way he would do over a video call. “I lost my phone,” I managed to croak out. There was a pause for a few secon
You're really not going to talk to me at all?” I heard Enzo ask, making me sigh.I had come down the staircase the next morning only to almost bump into him at the bottom. I increased my pace so I could disappear from him as quickly as possible, but Enzo just wouldn't let me be.“I thought I made that clear enough, but apparently I didn't, seeing how you're currently trying to talk to me,” I replied with a fake smile.“Nazlynn,” he called out softly, taking a step in my direction. My eyes searched his. I could still see fragments of the little boy who had left for Atlanta years back, but I could also see something darker. The kind of darkness that you are bound to be exposed to while working with the mafia.I was one to talk, considering how I'm married to a mafia don who is the rival to my biological father who is also a mafia don.“I'm not ready for the conversation you're trying to have, Enzo. I would like to get through one day without reminding myself of how I failed you as a si
I was going to respond to the message Alice sent, but then I got distracted by something that Gabriel said, and I kind of zoned out from everything until we got to the house.I knew when Enzo arrived because half of the staff went into a frenzy, trying to prepare a room for the guest. I wonder what he would be referred to as someone who works for the boss or the boss’ wife's brother. Either way, he's getting a wonderful welcome party.Once I got home, I picked up a sleepy Hailey from her nursery and headed to my room. I wanted to take a nap, and I always slept better when I was smothering Hailey in my arms. Some hours later, a knock woke me up. I saw that my girl was already up before me and was staring at me with her eyes that were an exact copy of mine.I swung the door open with a scowl on my face, ready to have a go at the person who has just interrupted my sleep and possibly, Hailey’s. I was certainly not expecting to be met with Luca's expectant face.My face softened visibly.
“Enzo,” I breathed out without turning back.“I'm home, sis. Not at the best of times, but I'm home,” he said, taking steps closer to me.I pressed a hand to my lips to conceal the sob that was threatening to break out. Slowly, I turned back to see a face that I had not seen physically in about eight years. Enzo was right there, standing in front of me.“How did you….?” I said, making a beeline for him, but then I stopped. Memories of the events from the past few weeks came flooding back into my head at once.“Nazi, please, don't turn away from me. I just want to give my big sister a hug after all these days,” he said, his eyes searching mine for any form of forgiveness. I made sure he wouldn't see any.He took a step closer to me, but I held a hand up to stop him. “How did you know where to find me?” I asked.“I called the boss when I landed at the airport. He told me you had just left the house and were headed here. Turns out, the trip from the airport here takes less time than fro
“Thrilling isn't it? To have found out that everybody had been lying to you,” the message read.“Who are you?” I typed in a frenzy. “Why are you doing this?”“Just a concerned citizen who doesn't like getting lied to. Something I figured you and I have in common.”My nostrils flared. Whoever this was, the person clearly knew a whole lot about me, and I didn't know anything about them. “I want to know who you are. Do you want to meet up?” I asked, biting down on my fingernails.“Making friends is not a part of my job description, sweet pea.”I kissed my teeth in irritation. “What job description?”“You.”That one word chilled me to the bone. I swiped away from the chat and quickly blocked the number from calling or texting me before I could allow myself to give it an extra thought. And that was the end of that chapter for me. I completely closed my mind to everything the person had said to me.It's been almost three weeks since Luca and I had the biggest and most emotional argument t
It took me a few minutes of staring at the screen before I decided to turn off my phone and ignore it. I left Hailey under Tracy's care and headed for the gym without taking the bath that Maria had already prepared for me.Between the music blasting through my earphones and how fast the treadmill was, I was in my own world. The treadmill was on the highest speed it has ever been on. Somehow, it felt like I was running away from all my problems and for just that moment, I felt better. I felt hopeful like I could forgive Luca, forgive Enzo, forgive my mother, forgive Vincent, and lastly, forgive myself.I wasn't sure how long I was on the treadmill, running on a spot until Mathias appeared out of nowhere and turned down the speed of the treadmill.“Hey, hey, hey,” he said as I turned to glare at him. “Don't kill the messenger. I'm just here to check up on you.”“Why did you turn it down? I didn't ask for anyone's help,” I said with a scowl on my face as I took off my earphones that were
It had been two weeks since Luca dropped those bombs on me. Enzo had been blowing my phone up nonstop. A part of me was hoping and praying that Luca was lying about the whole Enzo thing, but barely twenty minutes after I asked him to leave me alone, Enzo started calling me.My brother wasn't playing football in Atlanta like I thought. Instead, he was a member of my husband's mafia. How much crazier can this get? At least it made sense now why Enzo did not mention anything about getting threatened by Luca's people or the time when they made me believe he was shot. It was all part of their ploy to get me to stay here and what better way to do so than to threaten my brother? I couldn't even speak to Elena or Sabrina. What would I say? How does a person even start a conversation like that with her friends?I had told Luca to give me space to process things and I clearly needed a lot of that space. He didn't agree too easily though.“You'll need to leave. This room, this wing, maybe even
“What do you mean Enzo?” I asked incredulously.I had stopped pacing and was now standing a few inches away from Luca, waiting to hear what he had to say. My heart was in my throat, choking me internally.“Nazlynn, I promise you, I was going to tell you everything soon. This is not how I planned for you to find out. This was certainly not a part of it,” he said, standing up so we could be on the same level. “I would appreciate it if you explained to me what you meant when you mentioned my brother. You don't know Enzo. You've never even met the guy. Hell, I haven't even seen the guy in years, so how are you speaking about me on the phone with someone you've never met?” I asked all in one breath.Luca is either the worst at starting an explanation or has plans on giving me a heart attack because his first statement threw me off balance so much that I could have crumpled to the ground if only it registered at first. “Enzo works for me, Nazlynn,” Luca said.I fixed my gaze on him. Then
“You're right,” Luca started.“What did you say?”“You're right,” he repeated. “I already knew.”The sob that I had been holding back all this while rose up to my throat, and I choked it back forcefully.“Your mother was in Italy when she got pregnant. She and Vincent were dating then, and he worked for a man there. The man admired your mother, and during one of their encounters, you were conceived. It was—”“Hold on. Hold on. How do you know any of this?” I asked him, shocked at the words that were coming out of my husband's mouth.“Can you just let me say what I know? I promise I'll explain everything to you.”I kept mute. By all means, speak away.“It was an amazing time for Vincent. He had no idea he wasn't really your father, and your mother couldn't bring herself to tell him just yet. When she did, he ran for the hills. He was scared of what his boss could do when he found out about it. Vincent was a coward. He left your mother when she was far along in her pregnancy.”“Your rea
“No,” I whispered to myself, scooting away from the journal.“No, it's not possible,” I said again, louder this time. But there was talk about the mafia, about being scared, being in danger, and now, there's the name Santos. It couldn't be.I reached for my phone and pulled open a Google search then searched some keywords from one of the headlines I had read. Nothing came up. It was like all information from that day had been wiped off.Santos? The Santos that I have heard of? No way.I pulled up a search for the name Santos, and I was faced with about a hundred thousand of them. Pulling my hair in frustration, I flipped the remaining pages of the journal.Hoping and praying that I missed something the first time and that I would come across another page that would explain things. There was nothing. Just blank pages. My hands were shaking when I picked up my phone to call Luca. I hardly ever called him, so when I do call, he knows it's something serious. He picked up on the first
