I took my hand out of the horse's mouth once I felt everything smooth and neat and nodded towards its owner.
“I think this will fix the problem,” I said, setting aside the file I used on the animal's teeth. “When you get home, let him graze for a while before you feed him.”
“I didn't know something so small could be so strong.”
“I'm almost six feet tall. I'm not small at all, Mr. Jones,” I stated, grabbing my kit to carry it to my truck.
“You can call me Darren if you prefer, darling.”
I could call him a pig, but I didn’t want to offend them.
I bit the inside of my cheek and closed the hatch with more force than necessary when I saw that the man had followed me.
“And I didn't mean your height, sweetheart,” The man continued as I turned to him. His flirtatious smile made it clear what he meant.
“I'm not interested in a Sugar Daddy, Grandpa.”
It wasn't the first time I'd been hit on at work. It wasn't the first time a man older than my father had made a pass at me either, but at least I didn't know those men had wives and children waiting at home while they did it. I guess a lot of men didn't mature with age.
His smile faltered a bit.
“Don't dismiss the idea before you try it, darling...”
I couldn't help the sound of disgust that escaped from me at his words.
“Take your horse and get out of here, pal. We already found out why Otis didn't want to eat. You can leave now.”
“Listen to me, you little brat. You don't want to talk to me like that...”
“Or what?” I snapped, straightening up when he came closer to try to scare me.
“Or I'll talk to Jacob and complain about the poor treatment I've received from you.”
“I think Jacob will be here in a few minutes. Maybe you should get it over with, Darren.”
We both turned to George, who was leaning against the back door of the clinic.
I didn't know my boss was there, or how much he’d heard, but I greatly appreciated it.
“I think I should go,” The man said, taking the reins of the horse to direct it towards his trailer. “Perhaps the next appointment should be at my ranch.”
“Perhaps you should wake up if you think I'm going to send Vivienne to that filthy place with you,” My boss spat out, surprising me. “Good luck getting Kristy to answer your call. Don't think we forgot what you tried with her last time.”
“Fuck you, Woods,” The man growled, before slamming his truck’s door and pulling away.
It hurt me to see the poor horse hitting the walls of the trailer and I couldn't help but curse the horrible man for treating the animal so badly.
But if he’d spoken to me that way, what kind of treatment could I expect him to give to an innocent creature?
“Are you okay?” My boss asked once we stopped seeing the truck. “I'm sorry you had to deal with that son of a bitch. Normally I'm the one who does it, but I was talking with the surgical supplies’ provider.”
“Now I understand why Kristy refused him the entrance.” I shook my head, still disgusted with what had happened.
“I'm really sorry you had to deal with that idiot, Vivi. But there are not many like him in this place.”
“I don't know why his wife is still with him,” I said, following him as he pointed me toward the stables a few feet from us. “What are you showing me?”
“Lucy's here,” Was the only thing he said before leading me into the compound.
“When did she arrive?” I asked excited.
A week had passed since we arrived at The Eden and this was the first rescued animal to arrive since then.
Except for routine checkups on a few animals, an emergency I attended at a neighboring farm, and constant visits from town customers, all had been relatively uneventful.
Everything had been normal.
Until now.
“Jacob texted me saying they just dropped her off at her stable.”
And then I saw her.
A beautiful chestnut mare who had injured her rear left leg and whose owner had not been able to afford the therapies, so he’d contacted Jacob to take her in with the condition that he could visit her when he could.
George told me Jacob hadn't had any problem accepting the deal with the elderly widower living on his pension. So, Jacob took his truck and trailer this morning and traveled to Sheridan to look for the shelter's newest resident.
“It's impressive,” I murmured, moving closer to get a better look at her. I smiled as the animal approached and lowered her head when I raised my hand. “And you're so sweet, another point for your, honey.”
“And there's something else.”
I let out a squeak of excitement when I noticed the ultrasound machine at his feet.
“The owner said the neighbor's horse was hanging around her a few months ago, but he didn't give it a second thought until he saw her starting to gain weight…Wanna do the honors?”
“Hell, yeah!”
I started to put on the special glove for this type of procedure and deposited a large amount of lubricating gel. Once I had emptied the feces from the rectum, I took the ultrasound machine George offered me and that he had already prepared, and I started to insert my hand together with the device.
I did a sweep from Lucy's pelvis to her cervical star, finding what we had originally suspected.
“She's pregnant,” I confirmed excited, pulling my arm out of the mare. “Should we do a transabdominal ultrasound to confirm for how long?”
“I knew you'd say that, honey,” George laughed, taking the scanner from my hand to switch it. “You look like a girl in a candy store, Vivi.”
“Can you blame me? The baby mares and foals are a beauty. This definitely puts a stop to my episode with Mr. Jones.”
“What did that asshole do now?”
I was startled by the sharp tone with which Jacob spoke.
“Good God, Jacob, where did you come from? You should wear a bell or something to prevent future heart attacks.”
My idea was to lighten the man's mood a bit, but it didn’t work. After all, it was Jacob we were talking about.
In the few times we'd crossed paths, he'd been decently courteous…and cold.
Jacob never smiled and took everything very serious and although everyone around him joked and laughed, the boss never shared the jokes.
There was always an air of respect towards him.
Cause yeah, the workers had fun and even joked with each other regardless of Jacob being present, but he was never part of those games.
I was starting to believe that the day we met and he smiled at me and shared something personal with me was an isolated episode.
“I asked you a question, Vivienne,” He said impatiently, letting me know he had entered Lucy's stable and stopped in front of me.
“It was nothing, Jake, really. Mr. Jones made a pass at me, but nothing happened.”
George snorted loudly.
“The son of a bitch thought that just because Vivi was new, he could threaten her with you. That filthy weasel.”
I was about to say something more, but I noticed Jacob's face had lost a bit of color.
“Don’t call me like that ever again.”
He practically spat out the words.
“Like what?” I stammered, surprised at the furious tone he used in my direction.
“Jake. Do not call me that way. Never.”
“Hmm, I’m sorry? I didn't…realized I did it. I won’t do it again. I promise”
“Good,” He growled, backing away. “And as for Darren, if that son of a bitch thinks he's coming to harass my women, he's dead wrong. From now on he can seek help elsewhere because I won’t allow that kind of abuse.”
I nodded as an answer, it was the only thing I managed to do because I was left speechless by the fierce tone he’d used.
And also, because he’d implied I was his woman, well, one of his women, but that possessive tone had played havoc with me.
“Well, if anyone is interested in knowing, in six months Lucy will be a mom.”
I looked away from Jacob and now I was the annoyed one.
“Hey! That's not fair. I wanted to do the echo.”
George just shrugged and turned off the machine.
“I didn't want to interrupt the contest of stares between you two. It's very entertaining to see all that pent up energy between the two of you by the way. You should do something about it.”
I swallowed hard as Jacob's eyes widened and his cheeks turned an adorable reddish color.
It wasn't the first time he'd blushed in my presence, and that fact made my determination to see him strictly as my boss to waver a bit.
But every time that happened, all I had to do was to remember the way he'd spoken to Taylor and it would pass.
“Is everything okay with the pregnancy?” I asked, changing the subject.
“Everything's perfect with this cutie,” George agreed, holding up the gear we'd used.
I went over to help him.
“And Lucy?” It was Jacob's turn to ask, “Is she okay? I want to tell Paul that Lucy is okay.”
“Lucy's health is in perfect condition, Jacob,” I replied, stroking the mare's neck.
“Fine,” Was the only thing he said before heading out the door. “I have to go, see you.”
My boss' soft chuckle took my eyes off Jacob's ass as he walked away from us.
“He likes you,” He said, surprising me.
I snorted once I snapped out of my trance and followed him out of the stables towards the clinic.
“If so, then the man has an unusual way of flirting.”
“The man has had a few rough years, honey. It wasn’t easy to adapt to this new life he now has.”
Blessed curiosity that always won me over.
“What do you mean with that? What happened to him?”
“Jacob was a fireman,” Was his reply.
“Was? Why did he stop being?”
George hesitated a bit before answering me.
“He had an accident that left him disabled and forced him to quit the job he loved so much. Jacob hasn't been the same since then,” My boss explained with a serious tone. “And Vivienne, I'm not defending him, but I saw the way he treated you when you arrived… and for a moment I saw again the boy he used to be. I know it's not easy to deal with someone as dry and gruff as Jacob is, but please bear with him a little.”
“I would say you’re right because I understand what you are trying to tell me, George. When we were walking to the clinic the day I arrived, I met another person. But when he picked me and Taylor up at the clinic and treated us so coldly and spoke so rudely to my daughter after learning what she had been through… I don't want to be around someone like that. I will not expose my daughter to a person who can hurt her with so few words.”
“And I understand you, but Vivienne, didn't you think that maybe the boy was scared?”
“Scared,” I repeated confused.
“Scared,” He agreed, opening the door for me to enter the clinic. “Since the accident, Jacob has completely isolated himself. He left behind the life he had in Main Port. Work, friends, girlfriend… Everything. In the two years he's been living here, he's barely dated anyone, Vivi. And it didn't end well. You are the first woman I’ve seen that has affected him in some way and perhaps what he felt when he met you scared him. Think about it for a bit, honey.”
I froze in the hallway leading to our offices as George walked into his and closed the door behind him. My mind turning over and over to my boss' words.
Would it be possible?
Could I allow myself to believe that whatever we’d felt when we met had scared Jacob to the point he didn't know how to process what he felt?
Today had been the first conversation we'd had since he spoke the way he did to my daughter because whenever we found ourselves in each other's presence, we'd look for some excuse to disappear, so he hadn't given me many chances to find out if what George had told was true or not.
“Mommy? What are you doing there?”
I was so lost in my thoughts I didn’t notice my office’s door opened and that Taylor was looking at me with confusion.
“I was looking for an excuse to go into town and couldn't think of one, babe,” I said, smiling at my daughter before walking in and closing the door behind me. “I have the morning off tomorrow and I was thinking of going to Walmart, what do you say? You wanna go with me?”
“Yes!” My daughter yelled, making Lily jump on her feet to then start to complain, “It's starting to get cold, Mom, and I think we'll need more winter clothes. I was thinking about new boots. Purple ones. Better pink ones. No, maybe there's a half purple, half pink pair.”
“Or maybe we could buy two pairs, what do you say?”
Another squeak from my daughter let me know that she was excited about the idea.
Her pig's screeching let me know that she wasn't happy with the situation and that we should shut up so she can continue sleeping.
“Listen to me, you son of a bitch. I'm not interested in hearing your fucking excuses. I told you I wouldn’t allow that kind of behavior to my female staff. Just because you have balls doesn't make you superior to them. In any case, you promote the stigma that men are animals.”“Come on, Coleman. I was just joking around with the girl. I’d be incapable of doing anything to anyone. Besides, I had to try. You don't get women like that in Red Falls, if you know what I mean.”“No, Jones, I don't know what you mean,” I growled, slamming my house’s front door once I was inside. “And you shouldn't know either. You're married, for God's sake.”“Please, Coleman, I've been with this woman for forty years. She doesn't get it up anymore,” He said, laughing in my ear. “She knows it and accepts it and rather insists me to look for something out there.”I really doubted his wife shared the same opinion about their marriage.“I don't care what your wife thinks, Darren, I care what the women who work
“Look Mom! Wanda likes to eat from my hand!”“I can see that, Tay-Tay. It's amazing, honey.”“She never gets tire?” I asked, as Taylor ran after a calf to feed it, too.“It's like the Duracell bunny,” Vivienne commented, handing me the antibiotic bottle she used with Raul, one of our five rescued bulls, who a few minutes ago had had a six-inch abscess protruding from his chest. It hadn’t been the first animal treated in The Eden with that condition, but it had definitely been the largest so far.And the stinkiest.“Do you need more alcohol?” My vet asked, still amused, “Maybe sit down for a bit while you recover from the shock?”“Ha, ha,” I snapped, trying to sound severe, but from now on I knew it would be difficult for the woman to look at me with respect after seeing me retching once the abscess festered and the smell almost knocked me out. “I don't know how you can be so calm after something so horrible happened.”But all she did was chuckle at my words as she took off her gloves.
“Hmmhmm…that's a man.”“I saw him first. He's mine.”“You haven't done anything to undress him, so I'm starting to believe he’s isn’t yours at all. Maybe I should find out if he's straight-straight or straight-curious...”“You know I'm capable of kicking your balls, Pete. It wouldn't be the first time I did it.”“You wouldn't dare to do that to the father of your daughter, baby.”I couldn't help but snort at that.“I did all the work, pal. You weren't of much help in that conception.”“I massaged your feet every night,” He reminded me, making me smile. “And your back. And don't forget about the cravings you had every night, baby. I had to go to the other side of the city to get those stuffed peppers you liked to throw up afterwards.”“You can't forget the heartburn.”“My God, fucking heartburn.” He shook his head, trying to hide his amusement. “Thanks to you, there was a shortage of TUMS in the city.”“Taylor's pregnancy was kind of interesting, wasn't it?” I remembered every moment w
It was nine a.m. when I finally left the clinic.I was physically and emotionally exhausted and this exhaustion didn’t let me think clearly.I felt hurt and rejected after the treatment I received from Jacob this morning, but in part I couldn't blame him because I was the one who lay down next to him, I was the one who sought his warmth and hugged him all night and I was the one who started touching him as I pleased while he slept. And I definitely owed him an apology for all of the above, because he’d simply stayed with me to keep me company as a friend, not for me to use his body as I pleased when he was most vulnerable. So, I stopped one of the workers who was helping Kristy with some supplies boxes at reception to find out where the man in question was.“Hey, Carlos, good morning, have you seen Jacob?”“Hey Vivi. I think he's near the lake. It’s been raining since last night and some areas got muddy and there are some animals trapped.”Great, now was raining.I thanked the boy and
“I told you already I'm not hungry.”“And I told already you I don't give a fuck what you say. You will eat, period.”“Silvia…”“No,” She cut me off, crossing her arms. “You got kicked by a goddamn bull the size of a truck and don't think I didn't notice the limp you had when you got here this morning...”“But…”“...So, your stupid mind state is letting me know that you're in no condition to make any decision,” Silvia continued without letting me speak. “You're going to eat the fucking soup, Jacob Simon, if you don't want me to force it down your throat. You know I'm capable of that. On more than one occasion I've had to use my brute force on you, kid.”I swallowed hard before nodding and settled better against the headboard so George could place the tray of food on my lap.“I'm going to get the painkiller you need to take with your meal,” She snapped, challenging me with her eyes.“I'll be waiting,” I muttered, staring down at the bowl of soup.“And if you think you're going to get o
“Okay, I admit it, this is beautiful.”“I told you.”“I totally understand why you wanted your house back here and not in front of the property.”“And you haven't seen the sunrise or sunset yet.”“Hmm… Is that an invitation?”Vivienne laughed when I shifted uneasily before resting her head on my shoulder with a deep sigh.“It's so easy to tease you, Jacob. You have to relax a bit.”I blew out my breath and forced myself to do as she said, wrapping my arm around her body in the process.“I’m sorry. It's been a long time since I was in this situation and I don't know how I should act.”“You can act however you want with me, cowboy,” She whispered, dropping a hand on my thigh. And I tensed up automatically again, because that thigh was missing the rest of its leg.It had been two days since I got hurt, and since I finally kissed her.And contrary to everything I’d thought could happen, we had fallen into this kind of relationship where we kissed, touched and talked to each other without
“Is Jake really okay?”I stopped the truck in front of Jacob's house and turned to my daughter.“He's fine, but Taylor, you need to stop calling him that.”“But mom, he told me I could call him that,” She insisted, undoing her seat belt before opening the door to get out.“Somehow, I feel like I shouldn't believe what you say, baby.”I went to the back door and picked Lily up before setting her down to see her run to her owner. The damned pig was getting heavier.“I promised I wouldn’t say more lies, mommy. Although I didn't really lie, I just didn't tell the whole truth. They’re two different things.”And she was only seven.“I dread the day you come of age, girl,” I sighed, leading her towards the entrance. It’d only been a few hours since I saw Jacob and he told me about his painful past, but somehow, those few hours felt like days.I hadn't wanted to let go of him. I’d wished I could weld my arms around him and comfort him until he felt strong enough to face the world on his own,
Vivienne would be the death of me.But what a way to go.I couldn't believe I'd let her do what she did to me, though…it had been amazing.I couldn't remember the last time someone did a hand job to me, but this one would never leave my mind.Nor her words.Shit, Vivienne sure had a dirty mouth, and I had loved every word that had come out of it.I’d loved the way she’d made me feel with her words and her touch. In those few minutes, only existed the two of us. For a few minutes, all I could think about was how amazing her hand felt around me, and how I wished I could turn around to finish on top of her and finally fuck her.The only thing that had stopped me was the explosive orgasm that happened when she ordered me to come.Son of a bitch, no one ever said those words to me in the past. I’d always been the one to give my partner pleasure and then get my own, so Vivienne taking the reins and helping me get out of my mind had been really liberating. In more than one way.“Look at him,
“We need to stop meeting like this, darling.” My eyes opened wide when I heard that voice, and my heart raced when I found myself face to face with her gray gaze. What I feared had happened. My sweetest torment was in front of me. Not a day went by that the memory of this woman didn’t cross my mind. I lived in front of the sea, so it was seeing it and remembering the beautiful color of her eyes. This beautiful woman never left my head. “Kane? Are you okay?” I snapped out of my poetic thoughts to focus once more on my favorite nurse, which reminded me why I was visiting the ER. “I'm sorry,” I murmured, my throat drying even more when Natalie stopped beside me with a worried expression. “They told me you hurt your foot,” She mentioned, and I couldn't help but tense at the feel of her palm on my arm before she leaned over me. “Did you hurt your head too, honey? You must be honest with me. You could have a concussion.” “I just hurt my right foot,” I said somewhat breathless as sh
Red Falls, Oregon. Nine years later.“I can't believe you're starting college tomorrow, babe.”My oldest daughter giggled before putting a neatly folded T-shirt in her suitcase.“Me neither, Mom. I don't know where the time went. I remember when we arrived at The Eden as if it were yesterday.”My heart broke a little when Taylor looked at me with her big, beautiful eyes, and I couldn't help my own tears.“That day was one of the happiest for me, even if Jake was rude. But his attitude improved after that.”That day had also been one of my favorites. After all, I ‘d met my future husband, but I agreed with Taylor, I too wanted to wring Jacob's neck for how he’d treated her.“Where is he by the way?” Taylor asked, still putting clothes into her suitcase. “I haven't seen him all day.”“He's with George in the stables, baby,” I said, swallowing the lump in my throat as I remembered the sadness that had come over Jacob in the last few days. “You know the calf that arrived this week is in p
“Look at me, Jake! Look how high I can jump!”“That was awesome, Tay-Tay,” I said from the edge of the pool, relaxing again as Taylor surfaced with a big smile on her face.No matter how much time passed or how well she swam, I would always relive that moment years ago every time Taylor dove into the water, though the feeling was gone once I surfaced.True to my promise, I had built an indoor swimming pool so we could use it year-round. And although this one wasn’t Olympic and we had to walk a bit to get to it since Vivienne had refused to build anything that would damage the beautiful landscape we had from our patio, Taylor loved coming here daily―always accompanied―and today I had decided to take the day off to be with my family. The last two years had been incredible. Not perfect—perfection didn’t exist—but very rewarding.I had married the love of my life the following spring, my wife had been the most beautiful bride in the world, and Taylor had been the most beautiful flower gir
“Merry Christmas, love.”I smiled with pleasure when her arms surrounded me from behind and her body ended completely pressed against mine.“Merry Christmas, baby,” I murmured, lacing my fingers with hers when they rested on my abdomen. “Though it's still a few hours to midnight.”“I hope you don't mind this little tradition in my family.” I turned in her arms upon hearing her apologetic tone once again, the scene taking place in front of the Christmas tree fading into the background as I focused completely on her.“I hadn't celebrated Christmas in years, Vivienne,” I sighed deeply against her forehead, now I was the one hugging her tightly against me. “The fact the presents are getting opened a few hours before doesn’t mean anything. I think our parents love the idea of being able to go to bed early and wake up late as there’s no pressure.”Taylor being Taylor, she'd understood early on that Christmas wasn't about an old man dressed in red coming down chimneys to leave presents under
“How come you haven't seen her yet?”“I'm still in the waiting room,” I replied to my mother through the phone.“So, Taylor's still under observation?” Mom insisted, “Silvia told me something else.”“Taylor is already in her room, Mom. But I… You know.”The heavy silence that followed was broken by my mother's long sigh.“My love, do you need me there? I know we promised you we'd leave first thing in the morning, but I think you're in need of a little knock on your head to straighten your mind. Are you sure the cold didn't cause any damage up there?”I couldn't help but laugh at that.“I'm fine, mom. And I don't want you traveling this late.” I looked up the hallway that would take me to Taylor's room if I only decided to act once and for all, but the fear gripping my body forced me to sit still where was. “I don’t want to bother.”“Jacob Simon Coleman. You saved that little girl from a certain death. You risked your life for the daughter of the woman you adore, and you think you're g
This was stupid. My balls were freezing and I was pretty sure there were two sets of eyes on my ass at the moment.I knew Vivienne would be upset when she found out about the lawsuit, but I thought she'd put it aside after realizing that Peter would be spending a lot of time at the shelter. So here I was, six feet off the ground, in the dead of winter, putting up Christmas lights that would serve no purpose unless we're crazy enough to want to be outside in this freezing cold.I didn't want to be outside. I wanted to be in the comfort of my own home, drinking hot chocolate like the pair were doing behind my back and watching some Christmas movie with my girls.I couldn't believe my luck.“Shouldn’t you be working?” I snapped when Peter made his comment, which I knew had nothing to do with Christmas decorations and everything to do with me being used as a sexual object.“It's Saturday, Coleman. And we're celebrating Christmas and all that shit... That light looks a little crooked. Vivi
“Hmm, I'm not understanding anything.”“This is your punishment.”Jacob looked intensely at the expanses of lights I was offering to him and then looked back at me blankly.“You did see the employees decorated the house, right? There's even a fucking Santa on the ceiling peeking out of a fake chimney next to the real chimney, Vivienne. There are so many lights, the damn house can be seen from space.”“Yes, but only in the front.”“What?”“They only decorated the front,” I said once more.“Did you hear what I just said?” An exasperated Jacob let out, “Vivienne...”“You kept information about this damned place from me, Jacob Simon,” I interrupted, my tone harsher than normal. “There's a fucking lawsuit against The Eden. The lives of dozens of cows are at stake in this lawsuit, and you kept it a secret.”He looked at me frustrated.“I hate it when you say my full name,” He said, messing his hair. “It's not that important, Vivienne. We’re gonna win. Those animals will have better lives on
“How do I look?”“Baby, I already told you, I want to eat you whole.”“I'm nervous Jacob. Why am I so nervous?”I couldn't help but laugh as I walked over to hug her.“Because your family and mine are finally meeting, my love.”“That's stupid. They already know each other. They are friends. My parents know more about your parents’ oral hygiene than you do. Your Dad helped mine to have all those offices across the country.”“But they never thought their children would end up together,” I murmured against her neck as my hands began to caress her ass through the green dress she was wearing. “Hmm, tell me you're wearing underwear, please.”“Are you crazy? I can't wear underwear with this dress without it showing, so don't let me bend for anything in the world.”I groaned in pain knowing that we didn't have time to take advantage of the situation.“Vivienne, why do you have to let me know such things when our guests are about to arrive?”“Well, maybe five minutes in the pantry will do the
“Are you sure you want to do this?”“I've never been as sure of anything as I am right now, babe,” I answered, not taking my eyes off the work the boy in front of us was doing.“Taylor is going to love it,” Vivienne sighed, letting her head fall onto my shoulder. “Though I don't think she'll be too surprised when she sees your present.”“But then she'll know I'm dead serious about her mother.”“Baby, you had another one of your surprised conversations with the girl. You told her you loved me, I think she knows how serious you feel towards me. And Jacob, enough with the presents. Half the things you've bought her are unnecessary.”“Hey, Peter's had her too long with him. Everything makes me think of her.”I couldn't stop my reply from coming out in the form of a complaint, but it was the truth.Peter had taken Taylor to Portland to visit both her maternal and paternal grandparents, and I never imagined how much I would miss the little girl.I’d grown used to having both Taylor and Vivi
