FLASHBACK
The day I left the country was the most painful time of my life. Earlier that day, I received a letter from Kim’s lawyer that he was filing a case against me, and that was to nullify my marriage to Yen. I didn’t want to make it hard for them, so I decided to run away, thinking I could forget her easily.
I had been sleepless for who knows how long, and words were not enough to describe the pain I was struggling to overcome. Yet, even if the pain was too much and I was tempted several times to slam my car into a post or pull it over a cliff, something was always holding me. And that’s my reluctance to let Yen live in guilt.
Yet, I had set her free and didn’t want her to be responsible for my misfortune if ever I let my sorrows kill me.
However, even if I had set her free willingly without a fight, it still hurt like hell. I didn’t even know how I’d survive for a day. I couldn’t seem to live without her, but it would be selfish of me to hold her back from where she’s happier.
I am with a huge flaw – and I couldn’t make her happy.
What shattered me first was when I learned she married Kim in the second year of our relationship. Not just to some acquaintance, but Kim Mori, the CEO and owner of Kim Yuan’s Microelectronics, Inc.
I didn’t know about her marriage with him at first, but I found it out when she worked for Mr. Kim Mori. I noticed later that there was something in the way Mr. Kim looked at her that I began to suspect. She often went home late and had many excuses. And all her alibis always linked to dinner meetings or out-of-town trips with Mr. Mori.
I started hiring people to stalk them, and one of them was working for Mr. Mori in the same building where they both held their office. I knew it was wrong, but I was dying to know the reasons behind Yen’s strange behaviors.
Until I learned what truly happened. And that their marriage happened when she got an offer to work in Japan. It was shortly after our second anniversary as lovers.
It turned out that her job offer was not only about the opportunity but a planned move. Mr. Williams, the owner of Quicksend Remittance who was her employer, was not just her boss, but her biological father. He was looking for Yen for several years until someone led him to her.
One night, when Mr. Williams threw Yen a party to introduce her to his corporate world, she met Mr. Kim Mori. And that was how their relationship started and how Yen first betrayed me. They fell in love, got married soon, and even had twins. But Yen never told me about it, even with a simple message. I was like an idiot, patiently waiting for her to come back.
After a year of their marriage, something happened. She had a fight with Kim that made her furious. She went out to a bar with a friend, not knowing that her friend sold her to her long-time suitor, Josh Herra. She was almost raped – thankfully, Kim arrived to save her.
Too scared by what happened inside when Kim fired his pistol against Josh Herra, she ran out of the room, not expecting that a worse evil awaited her.
James Mori, Kim’s cousin whose name always linked to womanizing, caught her and threw her inside a room. Whoever may have witnessed how it happened and how it came that Kim got misled, I knew it was because it all happened in James Mori’s territory. Instead of looking for her inside the premises, Kim hurried away, chasing Josh Herra’s men, whom he may have thought as the ones who took Yen away.
The most unthinkable thing then happened – James Mori and his men successfully molested her. Perhaps, she was not yet fated to be ruined forever because a waiter insisted that we should check what happened in that room.
It was such a coincidence that I was at the same place with an investigation team to monitor James Mori’s illegal activities. And the waiter was right when we checked the establishment’s CCTV. I saw Yen, to my horror, coming out of the door almost naked. And I saw how James Mori caught and forced her inside the room. My team and I ran to rescue her, but we were too late.
I may have rescued Yen, but something horrifying happened to her – she could not recognize me anymore. That must be so traumatic for her, and I didn’t want Yen to suffer from shame and media exposure anymore. Not until her memories are back.
I asked my team to keep this thing a secret first. Thankfully, they agreed, and that also meant hiding all the pieces of evidence of the incident.
They entrusted Yen to me and allowed me to take her back to the Philippines through our private plane. I knew there would be consequences for withholding the truth, but I couldn’t care less. Yen’s privacy was more important to me.
I brought her to a hospital directly, had her undergo hymenoplasty, and pretended I didn’t know about her rape incident. No one else knew about her misfortune in Japan, except for my team who helped us and Maezy, Kim’s mistress, after Yen disappeared.
I thought her dissociative amnesia would heal right away, but it didn’t. And the memory loss was extensive – she didn’t remember anything that happened in Japan. Fortunately, she recognized me later, her family, and everyone else; except for Kim, her father, and everyone she met in Japan.
Since I didn’t know that she was already a married woman, I proposed to her. We then got married, bought a house, established a chain of coffee shops, and lived normal lives. I didn’t bother to know what happened to her in Japan – all I cared about was the present and that she was with me.
But one day, Kim appeared, claiming her back as the wife he married in Japan. I could have fought back in court, but I chose not to. Through my discreet investigations, I already knew their secret affair, and I saw how happy Yen was whenever she was with him. Kim made her truly happy, while I couldn’t. And that happiness wasn’t about wealth alone because I could also provide it for her. It’s all about my flaw.
And my flaw is that I go limp in bed, depriving her of the full sexual satisfaction a woman has to have.
Three years have passed after I left the country, and I’m sure Yen vaguely remembers me. However, she took something away from me, and that’s my capacity to love again. And the day I stepped out of our matrimonial house is the day I swore I’d never hooked up with any woman again.
Ella's POV Four years ago... A waiter opened the door, and the strange gaze he shot at me sent shivers down my spine. I began to believe what I heard that my dad’s business partner was also not a simple man. “Good morning, ma’am. Are you Miss Ella Kaneko?” he asked, a weak smile forming on his lips. I frowned; I didn’t have to give my name to a stranger. But I got curious as to what extent the man I was going to see knew about me. Only a few people know that I am a Kaneko. The rest of the people knew me as Ella Sahara.” Without answering, I looked around, and I saw only a few people filling the place. It was still nine, so this was what I had hoped for. I was not too fond of crowded places, and even if Jamella was a five-star restaurant in Cambridge, I didn’t expect it to be less crowded. "Ma'am, this way, please," said the waiter I didn't notice was following me. He just sprung by my side, and I almost bumped into him. I glared at him, wrinkling my forehead at his know-it-all
I held his gaze for a long while, and that was enough to tell him I needed more explanation. But before he opened his mouth to speak, the door creaked open, revealing the waiter with a tray in his hand.Mr. Mori gestured for him to come over, and he stepped inside, placing our food on the table.“Let me do it,” Mr. Mori said, dismissing him with a hand wave. And the waiter hurried out, closing the door gently.Mr. Mori placed a platter of dried beef tapa, poached eggs, and some fruits and veggies in front of me. Next, he carefully slid the cup of steaming coffee beside the plate.“Let’s discuss over breakfast,” he said, handing me sachets of brown sugar. “I’m not sure if you like this, but I like caffe lattes.”“No problem with me.” I took the sachets from his hand, tore a pack open, and mixed its contents in my steaming cup. The heart design of the latte art instantly dissolved into the c
There must be a deep reason why he wanted to topple the CEO of Kim Yuan’s Microelectronics. From what I’ve heard, it was a huge company with several branches across Asia. I knew it because the company where I was working ordered products from them. I cast a discreet glance at Mr. Mori. Then, when I saw that he was finishing up the food on his plate, I took my free time to look up on G****e the name of the CEO of Kim Yuan’s Microelectronics. And my mouth hung open as I saw his name on my phone screen. Kim Mori. This couldn’t be a coincidence. I glanced at the man in front of me, and I saw some features about him similar to Kim Yuan’s CEO. “A relative?” I asked. I was never good at holding back my mouth. “Cousins.” “Oh, why do you have to compete with a relative instead of helping each other?” “He screwed me up. And as I said, I am already walking on a thin thread until it breaks.” He smirked, looking
My hands trembled as soon as my eyes reached the bottom of the page. My secretary took the tab from my hand, perhaps afraid I would drop it on the floor. Every mysterious word James told me before was all coming back, worsening the tumult I felt inside."This is a huge investment, James. Are you serious about your offer?" I recalled him asking this. I couldn't believe he would drop a business to a stranger easily, knowing he had given it a huge chunk of his time."Of course!" he answered seriously, making me frown in disbelief. "In the name of friendshipI had with your dad, and also because that wealth doesn't matter anymore."I then understood what he meant because, like dad, all the energy he spent on his businesses dissolved like bubbles as the government confiscated or closed them. And my dad was a businessman all his life, only that he linked himself with people who enjoyed doing things that were against the law.I even couldn
I took the earliest flight to Japan after the talk I had with the private investigator Menchie had hired. Even before his investigation started, he already knew so many things about him. That was enough to raise my hope of seeing James again. All I wanted to do was talk to him, know his current situation, and how I could be of any help. Unfortunately, I couldn't go to his family since they didn't know about me. I could neither meet any of his friends since he kept me away from them. In short, we lived in a different world that only the two of us enjoyed. Whoever he was in real life, I was sure he was the complete opposite whenever he was with me. I saw a kind and romantic person in him, loving me despite the short time we knew each other. I was happy with him despite not seeing him often. And that was the first time in my life that I didn't feel lonely after dad had passed away. I went down to the hotel lounge three hours after I checked into the Imperial Hotel. I was in awe of the
While sitting down on my couch facing the outside view from my suite, I decided to fly to the Philippines. According to Mr. Banzon, Mr. Kim Mori spent most of his time in the country because his wife's heart was in Cebu. It was perhaps because of the trauma she got in Japan that Mr. Kim Mori agreed with her. Taking her back after her traumatic incident only proved his genuine love for her. How I wish everyone could find his fulfillment in love just like these two, no matter how long the journey would be. Mr. Banzon told me that Mr. Kim Mori even made Kim Yuan's Microelectronics - Cebu Branch his base, taking all his best designers and tech geniuses with him. It was so heartwarming to know that he did it all for a woman. Booking an early flight that night, I arrived at Mactan International Airport before the crimson hues of daylight made streaks across the night sky. I didn't book a room in a hotel ahead of time, thinking that getting a room was never a problem in Cebu. I proceeded
ZED'S POV My three-year run away to other countries got wasted after a wild moment with Yen. If I already had enough trouble getting her off my mind before, that multiplied after I gave in to my intense yearning for her. Yet, I know I must stop before everything gets out of hand. A knock on the door jolts me out of my thoughts. I look up, thinking it's just the staff banging his vacuum cleaner on the door. But another louder round follows. I draw out a deep breath and then exhale before I force myself out of the chair. Walking to the door, I open it wide. And to my surprise, Ella's face greets my eyes. Then, perhaps noticing my expression, she smiles and says, "I told you I'd be back for dinner." "You have money. Is there a problem?" I frown. She shouldn't have come back for unimportant matters. "Yes, but-" Ella stops, her face turning pale. "But?" "I just want to have dinner with you, if you don't mind." I sigh, running my fingers through my hair. I'm sure she's not too stupi
I smile at Yen and Kim as if they aren't the ones who break my heart. Seeing them happy together reminds me of how miserable I have been since three years ago. However, I don't want them to see how wretched I am because pride is the only shield I have in this battle. I don't need their pity — it's eating up my self-worth. "Come on, Zed! We have lots of things to catch up on," Ara exclaimed, her beautiful eyes as big as the round LED light above us. I shake my head, annoyed at how spineless Ara seems. As Yen's best friend, she's a witness to all of our emotional struggles, but now she's acting like she has forgotten them all. I even ran away — she knows that — because it's just impossible to heal and move on while they are around the corner. Kim used to be our neighbor, so when Yen moved in with him, I almost went crazy. It's because I knew that in that other house, Yen was there in another's arms. "Dear, do you mind if we join them?" I tell Ella, pulling the edge of her shoulder c
Zed's POV I stare at the charcoal portraits of two little kids. One painting shows them holding hands, another shows them eating together, and another shows them chasing happily. Those portraits depict my longing to be with the brother I had never met. I don't realize that my tears are already brimming as I recall those days. Those days when I sent those paintings to the orphanage together with my father's monthly allocation for him. I wonder if dad had noticed that I also painted a portrait every month and made sure I finished them before it was time to send them to him. "You keep them," I say, lifting my teary eyes to Dennis. Dennis rolls his eyes. "You made me so poor back then. All the money that daddy sent went to the expensive frames I bought for those portraits." Ella laughs but tears pool at the corners of her beautiful eyes. She looks so divine in her bridal gown; her angelic face matches the glitters of those thousands of diamonds that Den adorned on her wedding dress.
My brows furrow as I look at the woman whose voice rings loud and clear inside the room. She looks like she is in her mid-fifties, but a strong and domineering aura emanates from her. Her presence speaks of authority, and the lift of her chin and fiery gaze is enough to tell she holds a high position that even James bows down in respect. “My queen! Why are you here?” exclaims James, his previous arrogant look melts down against the power and authority of this woman. “Put down your weapons!” she orders, moving her eyes around. The three burly men instantly bend down and put their guns on the floor. I look at James and also find him conceding. He raises his hands in a gesture of surrender, then bows down, placing his gun on the floor. “Surrender all the weapons, not only those in your hands!” My eyes grow wide at her command, and my gaze darts toward the men pulling the pistols and knives hidden inside their jackets. I also watch James disengage an oliv
"Very well," James raises his hands and claps slowly but loudly. He stands at the doorway, slowly pacing towards us. Following behind him are three burly-looking men who quickly spread apart, covering the room's corners. However, his claps are not to applaud but to mock. James is devilishly a handsome man in his mid-thirties but doesn't have the aura of domineering and stunning CEOs. He has gold piercings on his ears, messy bangs that he keeps pushing to the side, and tattoos painting his entire arms. He stands tall in a pair of signature rubber shoes and bleached denim jeans, coupled with a button-up shirt that lays open down to the center of his chest. His figure better fits the definition of a mobster. James looks at Zed and says, "I always know you would come to play the role of a knight in shining armor, saving a damsel in distress." I glance at Zed, now sitting beside Ella and holding her hand. He looks back at James, his eyes keen and watchful.
I feel my fear sucking the air out of me. If I have to see myself in the mirror, I must already be as pale as death’s shade. Zed glances at me worriedly, but his expression is worse than mine. I know very well that he’s not scared for himself but us. Every minute that ticks by feels like taking away some years from my life.“Where are we now?” Mitch asks, her eyes moving around fast. She’s as scared as me!“We’re going uphill,” says Zed. He looks now at Ella, who is now fast asleep due to the sedative that Mitch administered to her. Because of my fear, I didn’t even notice before that an intravenous solution was dripping above her.“Will the baby be alright?” He’s sleeping soundly on the stroller beside the stretcher. I can’t help noticing how Ella has prepared for this.“She must be. I have been able to prepare her needs ahead.”The ambulance then skids to a turn. Mitch and I hurriedly peer through the slits of the curtains and see that we’re entering a wide gate. Zed also peeks out,
"What are we going to do now?" I whisper, but my eyes dart wide in fear. Mitch and Ella also look back at me with freezing gazes, massive glints of fear and shock ruling their expressions. "Where are we heading?" Ella asks, her gaze shifting among the three of us. "I'll call a backup." Zed pulls out his phone from his back pocket without wasting a second. "Sir, we screwed up. When we reached the clinic, Ella was already in an ambulance. But an enemy has taken the driver's place." "Whose ambulance?" "From the hospital where her OB-Gyne is affiliated." "Where's Monster?" "At the clinic. But the key is with me." I realize that the monster they are talking about is the car we used in coming to the clinic. But, perhaps, it got that name because it is heavily tinted and bullet-proofed, aside from the ammunition loaded inside. "No worries. I have spare keys." "You're following?" Zed asks. "Yes."
Zed moves straight ahead instead of turning to the left as initially planned. So I start presuming that Zed has changed his mind about picking up Ella himself. But then he turns right, and soon, we enter a black gate. “What are we doing here?” I ask Zed. Seeing him unfastening his seatbelt, I also do mine. “Hurry, Ar. We need to change the vehicle, a bullet-proof one.” “Who is living here?” “One of my teams.” Zed jumps down from the car and runs towards my side to open the door for me. But before he reaches me, I have already stepped one foot out. “Ara, just stay here. You will be safe here. This area is heavily guarded, and the security is high. I will pick you up once everything is over. But in case I can’t, my team knows what to do with you,” Zed speaks in utmost tenderness. His face even paints his gratefulness and worry for me. But I don’t like him saying goodbye. I may not be of any help to him, but I want to accompany him until
"Ara, close your eyes and tighten your seatbelt!" I scream even before I see Zed's next move. He then looks over his right shoulder, places his right hand on the top of the steering wheel, then eases off his foot abruptly from the brake pedal. I scream again as the car reverses andaccelerates backward, missing the car that speeds next to us narrowly. "Slow down, Zed! I'm not ready to die yet!" I shout from the top of my lungs as our car is about to collide with another vehicle. And the torture doesn't end. Cars after cars come closer by a thread's width, but luckily, Zed swerves away just in time! Damn, Kim! I wouldn't be in death's mouth if it were not because of him! Is he siding now with James? "Scream as loud as you can, Ar! It eases your fear. Haven't I told you? Kim's kindness is just a show-off?" Zed yell in my left ear, jolting me off from my seat. "My goodness, Zedrick! I don't expect this side of you. How can you fly a
"You're seeking more trouble, Zed. Do you think James will give you peace?" I am already shaking in anger. Zed is just too stubborn. Just where does this man get his courage from? If he relies on his previous investigation team, I don't believe they're more powerful than the assassin's group. They have been delving into James' case for several years already. They would have solved the case long ago if they were that good. "Let him do what he wants." Zed doesn't look like he is kidding. His eyes are on the road, but his sharp gaze reflects his determination. Silence envelopes inside the car, giving me more time to look left and right, scared that a convoy of vehicles will suddenly overtake and block our way. I am fond of watching suspense movies, and finally, I have become the leading character in my life's drama. My phone suddenly vibrates, and I immediately presume it comes from a bomb planted under my seat. I scream, and Zed s
“Made from finest silk fabrics, this gown is embellished with 1000 diamonds. But this is not the most expensive wedding gown. Kate Middleton’s sparkling wedding tiara alone had 1000 diamonds.” Zed’s face pulls into a stern frown. “Are you meeting me just to show that off? Damn you, Dennis! I admit I can never afford a lavish bridal gown as you do, but believe me, the beauty of the wedding lies not in the expensive gown a bride wears, but the weight of the affection she carries in her heart.” I raise my head this time and peer at these men squarely. I may not have met Dennis yet, the one they call Mr. D, but I heard many things about him from Yen. She even calls him eccentric. And judging from what I am seeing now, he looks far more bizarre than how Yen describes him. How can a man in his right mind calls an ex-fiancé just to show off? “I’m seeing you because I want to ask for your suggestion.” Mr. D shrugs like he doesn’t care about Zed’s reaction. I
