CILLIAN
She wasn’t supposed to be here so soon, especially when I hadn’t spoken to my brother, Declan about the marriage.
“Take her to the guest room and keep her there till I say otherwise” I ordered the maid who had brought her in.
“Which of the guestrooms, sir?”
“Any of them for fuck sakes, Maria” I snapped.
The woman jumped and so did Scarlet who remained staring at me like she was seeing a figment of her imagination.
I did not think she too was properly briefed about the marriage but she would be and she should consider me merciful for deciding her as payment was enough for her father to keep his fucking head.
I would have very much liked to cut it off but I needed what he had to offer.
“Yes sir” Maria bowed, beckoning on Scarlet who rushed after her like she wanted to be anywhere else but in the same room as me.
I watched them leave almost at the same time Declan walked in. He seemed surprised at the presence of another woman in the house especially in broad daylight. Normally when we brought women into the house, they would already be out before the cock crows.
It was law and one my brothers and I made sure to abide by.
“Who is the delicious morsel Mara is escorting out?” He asked, walking into the waiting room.
“Your wife” I stated as calmly as I could.
He laughed then, my brother threw his head back and let out a burst of laughter while I stared at him without as much as a blink.
“You are kidding right?” He asked
“No, I am not and I would have told you today but she arrived early and…”
“I do not have plans to get married, Cillian… what the fuck is this about?” He exploded.
I knew this was going to happen but I also knew he would understand my reasons and follow my order because he was my younger brother and he knew I had the best reasons for the family.
“Her father is Patrick Quinn and he owes us a huge sum of money… money I borrowed him knowing fully well that he would never be able to pay it back” I explained, reaching for the bottle of wine of the table.
I gestured for him to take a seat but he refused so I took one
“I do not see where this is going”
“He owns a seaport, Declan and we have been trying to get our hands on one for a very long time”
“So why did you not ask for his seaport as payment or better still killed him and taken it”
“Listen to yourself…we cannot risk war at the moment, not now when we can do things in a very amicable way.” I told him. “If I had asked for his seaport then he would have fought for it and he would be able to mobilize more men than we have because everyone is vying for that particular spot and if I had decided to order his death then it would be a full blown war with other factions too”
Declan sighed.
He finally understood what I was talking about
“Have Kieran marry her then” He countered, speaking about our youngest.
“You and I know fully well that Kieran is not cut out for the married life”
“Neither am I” He argued.
“I know but I trust you to do the right thing and you are the only one I can trust to keep her in her place just enough for us to get what we want from her father then you can discard of her in any way you want, I do not give a fuck”
“Can I at least think about it?” He tried for the last time.
“You can if that will give you some semblance of control over the matter but it is done” I told him.
He stared at me in disbelief.
“Excuse me” He muttered stiffly, walking out before I had the chance to apologize for how I had sounded.
I sighed, downing the drink I had poured.
He was going to be a husband to her, this much I knew and although he would probably never love her, he would do right by her.
It was the reason he was the best choice for Scarlet.
There was no way she would ever be happy getting married to me and it would only be a matter of time before she did something as stupid as commit suicide and with Kieran it would be hell on earth to live with him.
I rose from my seat and began walking to the study, stopping when I saw the door to one of our rooms slightly open.
I knew that it would have to be the room Scarlet was in and so I walked in that direction, knocking softly.
“Come in” She called out.
I pushed the door open, walking into the room.
“Have you found your lodging comfortable?” I asked her, taking in the sight of her hair falling over her shoulders.
She is breathtaking… she is Declan’s wife
That was one thing I had to remember if we were going to have proper understanding in the future.
“Yes” She muttered in a very soft voice.
“Good” I responded, still standing there.
We continued looking at each other from across the room and I could see the fear in her eyes and feel the tension in her shoulders.
I resisted the terrible urge to close the space between us and pull her into my arms… maybe comfort her?
There was no way she hadn’t heard the rumors about us, some of which were very true.
“I should leave. Maria will get you something to eat and anything you want” I told her.
“Whom am I getting married to?” She blurted, her eyes steady on my face.
I said nothing, merely turned and walked out of the room closing the door behind me.

That is the reason for all of these, remember?”I sighed
