I continued conversing with Christie throughout our journey; she divulged everything about Adele, and between what Christian had told me and now my sister-in-law's account, I became convinced that Adele must have been unfaithful. Strangely, I found myself relieved that it had happened because now he is mine. The array of emotions that the very sight of my husband provokes in me is bewildering, especially the possessive thoughts that seem so alien. I scarcely recognise myself.

Upon completing our run and arriving at my room, I was greeted by the sight of Christian stepping out of the bathroom shirtless, his hair damp. He was strikingly handsome and alluring. I lingered in the doorway, transfixed and uncertain of what to do next, my heart racing and my body alight with longing.

"Is something amiss, Bella?" he inquired.

"No, nothing," I managed to say before retreating into the sanctuary of the bathroom.

I shed my clothes hastily, acutely aware of how sensitive my s

Everyone thinks that being the heiress of a wealthy family makes you happy. In their minds, they create a wonderful fantasy life that, in my case, is far from reality. Despite being the sole heiress of one of the most powerful families in my country—not only to my parents but also to my grandfather Santiago Sardino, a feared mafia millionaire—I am the most miserable person imaginable since I can remember. In the numerous novels I've read, rich children like me are always portrayed as petulant, conceited, and doing whatever they want without caring about anything. They face their parents without fear. I assure you that's not my case; I'm quite the opposite. My mother made sure of that, and now I find myself trapped in this miserable life they've imposed on me.It's been over six months since I've been living this arranged marriage charade. So far, I have no complaints. My fake husband, Luis, barely spends time at home. I'm immersed in my studies and visit my grandparents every day afte

I look at him with hatred, feeling a lump in my throat from the helplessness of the situation and my inability to act. He turns around and heads for the stairs, leaving me alone and in pain on the floor. Tears of frustration run down my cheeks, but I try to pull myself together and stand up. Suddenly, he turns and shouts at me from above."Bella, you're not a woman, you're too ugly! You have terrible taste in clothes! You're horrible! Your body is pathetic! It's embarrassing for me to walk arm in arm with you and introduce you as my wife! You know why I married you!" he spits out all that venom with rage.I can't believe what just happened. Luis hasn't just hurt me with his words; he's hit me. Although I try to stay strong, it deeply hurts to know that he doesn't value me as a person. This situation has opened my eyes to a reality I've been avoiding for a long time.Since childhood, I've always felt the pressure to please my parents and maintain the appearance of a perfect family. With my head resting on the steering wheel, I cry until a memory comes to mind, as if God had enlightened me. I remember the apartment my grandfather gave me in the city center many years ago, I think when I turned sixteen; it was my birthday present. I remember it as if it were yesterday: he took me secretly from home and led me there with such mystery to give it to me. "Nobody knows about its existence, just you and me," he told me.The happiness that fills me is enormous. I search through my purse and find the address and, on my keyring, the key that opens it. I look up the location on my phone, which immediately plots the route; it's not that far. I drive there. Upon arrival, I have to show my ID at the entrance because the doorman is new and doesn't know me. Well, I suppose the previous one wouldn't have known me either; I only came that one time when Grandfather brought me. I could never come back because they wouldn't let me out.The doorman keeps glancing at me. I've let my ha

She observes me with satisfaction and leaves. I open the bag reluctantly to find an extremely short dress that barely covers my thighs. I try it on; it's beautiful, but my breasts almost spill out of the neckline.I'll never wear something like this! What was Mom thinking buying me clothes that look more suitable for a woman of the night? No, I definitely won't wear such a garment, even if she gets furious! After my mother leaves, and having seen how the dress fits, I search through my wardrobe until I find an outfit my grandmother gave me for my birthday. It's pale pink; I try it on. It fits perfectly! Above all, I feel comfortable in it: nothing to be ashamed of or worried about men's leering looks throughout dinner.Dressed like this, I stay in my room until they're all in the car honking and calling for me. I run out and quickly get in. Since they're running late, they don't make me go back to change. My mother spends the entire journey berating me. I put my headphones on and focu

I look at the smiling lady in front of me, her image comes to my mind for an instant from when they used to visit my house before I was sent to school."I..." I don't know what to say, the words catch in my throat. "I... I..." I stammer. What are they doing here?"Don't pretend you don't remember Luisito, darling," my mother says in her fake voice. I look at her but say nothing. "You haven't stopped talking about him all these years."What? Why is my mother telling such a lie? I had never remembered him until today, I hate him!"Isabella," Dad speaks, "you said a moment ago that you remembered him."I look at Dad, not understanding what he's saying. Was that what I said yes to? Of course I remember Luis well! He was that hateful boy who always made me cry, forcing me to do things I didn't want to do. I've hated him all my life; he used to follow me everywhere and hit me when no one was watching. Then he'd manage to make me take the blame for everything he did. How could I forget? I th

I remain paralyzed, staring at them, unable to believe what they are saying. I look at Luis, who smiles like an angel, accepting everyone's congratulations while holding one of my hands in his and kissing me from time to time. And suddenly, he kneels before me and shows me, with his cynical smile, an engagement ring."Bella, since we were children, you have been a fascination to me, and you still are. As you promised me back then when you confessed your love, I have waited all these years for you. Because I have also loved you all my life and I intend to continue doing so. Thank you for accepting me as the man who will make you happy for all eternity," Luis says while placing the ring on my finger, amid everyone's applause. He doesn't even ask if I accept him, he takes it for granted. I feel trapped, unable to react or say a word. I can't find words to express my desperation; I remain frozen and at a loss for what to say. I know I can't voice my opinion; it has always been this way.

Luis stares at me with an expression of mockery and contempt that I did not understand, but I waited for him to finish speaking in the hope that somehow I would escape this torture."Did you really think I was in love with you? No, Bella, I'll never fall in love with someone like you," he said cynically. "So take it well, we'll both win. You'll have your freedom, and I'll have my inheritance. We'll be married for three years, and each go our separate ways. We'll only appear to be married. Now you have to pretend you like me, that we've truly been in love since childhood; if we do it well, we'll be free sooner.""Sounds good to me; I don't like you either. We'll divorce in three years, and that's it," I replied happily, feeling a great weight lifted from my shoulders. I felt God existed and had come to save me."Yes, but I want to make something clear. Right now my nose is red from sneezing so much; my mother and mother-in-law ordered an enormous bouquet that reaches almost to my knees, and not only that. Every wedding arrangement includes these flowers. Thankfully, my grandmother changed the bouquet and had all the others removed from the decorations with Luis's help, who wants to get in their good graces. When she told him I was allergic to those flowers, he agreed to remove them all, despite the furious faces of my mother-in-law and my mother. So I felt relieved when my grandmother gave me a new bouquet. One that she had ordered, made of orchids that don't affect me and is much more beautiful. She also placed them in the floral arrangements with Luis's help. My grandmother is the only one excited about this wedding. She hugged and kissed me, with tears in her eyes. My grandfather doesn't want me to get married. He keeps telling me he's only here for me, clearly annoyed. He doesn't like the groom and looks at him as if he wants

"I forgot," I reply, daring to glance at him. Heavens, he’s handsome! I turn my head away and continue speaking, trying to keep my voice steady. "I used to run in France, but after having the children, it became more difficult.""Well, from today onwards we'll run together every day! How's that sound? Would you like that?" he asks."Yes, that would be nice," I say, stubbornly looking ahead. Fortunately, Christie sticks to my left side, and I turn to her as she asks excitedly."Hey Bella, do you like skiing? My brother and I love it!""Yes, I adore it! Marta and I are quite good. We used to go skiing every year on holiday," I tell her enthusiastically. If there's one sport I enjoy, it's skiing. It's not that I love the cold, but skiing is my passion."The children seem to have learned to ski before they could walk. We all love it.""My children can ski?" Christian asks in surprise and then concludes with a smile. "They must take after me. Even in t

We spent almost the entire night talking with Christie; she hasn't tired of hugging me, kissing me, and thanking me for marrying her brother to save him from Adele. We didn't tell her that our marriage wasn't real. Christian fell silent when she asked, and then he took her with him. I don't know what he told her, but his sister now calls me sister-in-law."I'll help you, Bella, you'll see. Everything will turn out as my brother wishes. I promise you, don't be afraid, you have me and your husband," she said as she hugged and kissed me before going to her room. We did tell her that the children aren't his; she was amazed at how much they resemble her brother, even saying that Lucy looks like her as a baby. She thought Christian's idea to do parental tests with their hair was brilliant and offered to give more. She also carries hair from all four in a locket hung from her chest, just like her brother's.We continued talking a little more while we bathed, he outside and I insi

I hope Isabella does her part and that she's prepared psychologically. Chris told me about the scene his mother-in-law caused and that he hasn't seen her since. And that his father-in-law only greets them from a distance. But at least his sick grandmother seems to be doing better. He says his wife adores her grandparents. I just hope Isabella isn't that girl; I remember her mother was a viper and how she mistreated her, she even scared me. Ugh! I hope that's not my brother's mother-in-law! Dealing with Adele the witch is bad enough; two would be unbearable. We're nearly there; with all these thoughts, time has flown by, which is probably for the best. Let's see what surprise my brother has in store for me. Finally, it's time to disembark and meet Christian and his wife. Here we go, ready for anything!"What are you looking at?" I ask my bodyguard, who laughs at hearing me talk to myself. He shakes his head and accompanies me to collect my suitcase. I

"Could you arrange it to be merely an informative consultation? And you'll stay with me? Invent any story about me that you like; I'll follow your lead. Say we travelled on the same flight, that you... well... you know. But make it clear that I'm engaged and must remain untarnished for my wedding, do you grasp what I'm saying?" I implore him because the idea of being alone with a gynaecologist terrifies me."Christie, this is your reputation we're talking about. Aren't you scared it might leak out once they discover who you are? That sort of news could fetch a fortune," he cautions me with what looks like sincere worry in his gaze."If that happens... if that happens..." I stammer, realising the risk involved, but my determination is unwavering. So staring him straight in the eye, I declare boldly, "If that happens, you'll have to marry me!" And then I laugh to ease the tension building inside me. "Ha! Ha! Ha!""Don't laugh; this is no laughing matter," he retorts as

We were seated opposite each other, and it was apparent that David still harboured doubts about me, in spite of the numerous proofs I'd furnished. He scrutinised me intently as though attempting to decipher my thoughts. With a smile, I endeavoured to put him at ease and win his confidence."Could we draw up a contract?" inquired David once more."Indeed, that poses no issue, but I have a stipulation for you, David."Should he presume that I'll capitulate easily, he's gravely mistaken. I shan't depart without ascertaining my desires. If he is distrustful, then I am doubly so. It's becoming increasingly clear that our joint travel is no mere happenstance."A stipulation for me?" he queries with a hint of suspicion."Yes. Do you reckon receiving a substantial amount of money today would enable you to uncover that information?" Holding his gaze with a direct look, he swallows hard. "I assure you, it would suffice to secure your aunt's surgery with the preeminent

She was astonished to hear it and immediately asked him. "Didn't you say we could trust your sister? Are we going to deceive her about this?" I ask, stopping to look at him squarely."Never!" he says quickly, emphatically. "I trust my sister blindly; we'll tell her the truth about our relationship; she'll help us, you'll see. She also doesn't want me to marry Adele; she despises her because she says Adele used her to make me fall in love. And she was thrilled when the idea of marrying you came to me. Thank you for thinking of me to help you.""Are you thanking me for getting you into this mess?" I ask as I resume my work."Yes, it hadn't occurred to me when you asked me to pretend to be your husband; I immediately accepted and then realised it was the solution to stop my parents from wanting to marry me off to Adele. But there's something else I haven't told you, Bella."Isabella, intrigued by the seriousness with which he spoke to her, asked. "What's that?"

We're at the company, entering without any trouble. What Christian says is true; Grandfather's car doesn't let anyone see who is inside. Nor does anyone recognise it, so we go straight to the lift and up to the top floor without stopping. Just like that, no one in the company realises either. We laugh because we look like two thieves hiding from everyone."Ha, ha, ha... I haven't had this much fun or laughed so much in a long time," Christian says when we reach the top."Ha, ha, ha... nor have I. This is new to me, ha, ha, ha... What do we do? I'm sure they'll see us when we leave.""It doesn't matter, by the time they realise, we'll be long gone. This week, I want us to work first on the speech I have to give for the company's anniversary, and second, on these new programmes. I've noticed that both Marta and you have done this before. Am I wrong?""No, it's with that style of programmes we worked with in France. Your phone is ringing.""My phone?" &nb

He explains to me, looking very serious. I understand; they have no reason to trust me, I contacted him over the internet. That's why I thought about writing him a check, but then realise that might not be the best idea."Do you know where there's a cash machine or a bank? I'll go and withdraw the money now. I was going to give you a check, but I think cash would be better. Am I wrong?" I ask the detective, who nods in agreement."There's both just around the corner," he replies."Let's go right now to settle your fee. Your services have been invaluable, and I want you to continue the investigation until we find out what she did. Agreed?"I stood up without waiting for an answer. They exchange glances and then follow me, pointing out the way."Wait here," I say, indicating a café next to the bank. "What operation does your wife need?""She has a tumour in her head." The detective answers, looking at me questioningly.I look at him with
