Scarlett pov
The morning breeze rushed through my window, rattling the glasses and creating a cacophony of sounds that made it impossible for me to focus. My mind felt jumbled, and I tossed and turned on my pillow, clutching it tightly as the familiar scent enveloped me. I squint one eye open to sneak a glance at the clock.
“What the heck!” I exclaimed, leaping out of bed with my heart pounding in my chest. I was already running late. Normally, I wouldn’t care about what the store owner thought, but Marian had a knack for inserting herself into my life. Just as I was lost in thoughts of her, I heard her voice echoing from the hallway.
“Scarlett! Are you ready? It’s timeee…” she called out, stretching the word "time" for dramatic effect.
If I had the luxury of time, I would have tackled the laundry piling up around me. The sight of dirty clothes scattered everywhere made me uneasy, and a wave of longing for my family washed over me. I felt a sense of discomfort as I slowly pulled a chair closer to my mirror and sat down, resting my chin in my hand and letting out a series of sighs.
The alarm I set for 8 a.m. had just chimed at 9 a.m. sharp, leaving me baffled by the clock’s betrayal. “Seriously, were you just going to ring at this hour?” I grumbled at the clock, feeling miserable as I glanced at my disheveled hair, which certainly didn’t help my appearance.
After a few minutes of complete bewilderment, my gaze shifting from east to west without grasping anything, I finally took a shower and got ready for the store. Mr. Dirk is bound to complain about my tardiness, and who knows, he might even hand me a termination letter.
As I hurried through my morning preparations, Marian's urgent knocks on the door heightened my anxiety. "Scarlett, hurry up! We're going to be so late!" she shouted.
I inhaled deeply, trying to dispel the lingering tiredness. "Just a moment, Marian!" I called back, quickly applying lip balm and taming my messy hair.
When I finally opened the door, I found Marian tapping her foot impatiently. "Took you long enough," she remarked, eyeing my unkempt look. "You look like you just woke up."
I shot her a playful glare. "Thanks for the encouragement. Let’s get going."
As we rushed to the store, a sense of dread settled in. Mr. Dirk was known for his strict adherence to time, and I braced myself for a reprimand – or something worse.
Upon arriving, I saw Mr. Dirk pacing outside the store, arms crossed and a frown on his face. "Ah, Scarlett, you’ve finally decided to show up," he said with a hint of sarcasm.
Marian quickly defended me. "It’s not her fault, Mr. Dirk. I was the one who –"
But I cut her off. "No, Marian, it’s fine. I apologize, Mr. Dirk. It won’t happen again.”
Mr. Dirk's demeanor softened a bit. "Make sure it doesn't. Now, let's get to work. We've got a full day ahead."
As I started to restock the shelves, Marian leaned in and whispered, "Don't stress, Scarlett. You'll get through this. And by the way, I'm treating you to coffee during our break."
I wasn't sure if her kindness was genuine, but it didn't really matter. I was trying to figure her out. With my hands in my pockets, I couldn't help but smile as I watched her instead of focusing on the customers.
“I hadn't seen Nyx and Katherine in weeks. I hoped they weren't upset with me for disappearing months ago without saying goodbye. If that's the case, I wouldn't reach out to them, trust me.” I muttered to myself, wiping the dust off my desk with a towel.
Maybe you should reach out to them.
“No way, that's not happening. Your people go to the town hall for some wedding rituals over a guy who could leave without a second thought.” I had to say it; she kept pestering me all night about some ridiculous guy named Mike and how she wanted to share her life with him.
I shifted my gaze to the chocolate counter, trying to distract myself from the nonsense I just spilled.
Scarlett, you really need to work on your manners.
“Yeah, I hear that a lot…”
She was so angry that it didn't matter that she needed to leave my store; I was busy. I dug my hands into the chocolate stash. Perfect! This will help me out. I said with a smirk, tossing a piece of chocolate at her, hitting her nose, and she flinched.
“Ouch! Do people always act so rude?”
“And can you stop with the name-calling and just leave my store?”
Marian's eyes widened in surprise from the chocolate hit. "Ow, Scarlett! What’s wrong with you?" She rubbed her nose, her anger fading into amusement.
"Think of it as a peace offering," I said, trying to lighten the mood.
Chapter 12 Scarlett povThe sensation on my skin made my hair stand on end with unease. A man in dark sunglasses, hands tucked into his pockets, approached me. He felt otherworldly, radiating an energy that was hard to define."Hey, princess, can you hand me the cake posh? A customer needs it," a colleague called out, waving his hands. But my attention was solely on the man coming closer. I lost my balance on the stool I was using to organize the store's products. I took a deep breath as my colleague hurried over, his hand brushing against the man who was slowly making his way toward me."Oh, sorry, sir!" my colleague said, but the man only smirked in response."Scar..." he began to say my name, but I interrupted him, my jaw dropping in disbelief. "What’s with that look?" he asked."Nothing, it’s not your concern."He shrugged, opened the door, grabbed the cake posh, and walked away. I stepped back, wanting to avoid any connection. If he was indeed supernatural, he might sense m
Chapter 1Scarlett POV I practiced swinging my staff with a few quick movements, relishing the sensation of manipulating metals as a means to concentrate without distractions. As I took in the metals surrounding me, my Aura pulsed strongly within my chest. With a quick motion, I hurled the metals into the swimming pool of the abandoned warehouse that served as my refuge.I am Scarlett, the last mutant and werewolf following the rogue-led third-world invasion. I've been in hiding for years, and I despise interruptions... My thoughts drifted as the metals, previously floating in the air, suddenly plummeted to the ground. I couldn't dodge the heavy iron pieces crashing down on me, nor could I shift into my wolf form for safety. "What on earth is happening?" I shouted, shielding my head with my arms. My eyes widened in horror, realizing that each falling piece could seriously harm an ordinary human.A few minutes later, I entered the kitchen, scanning for something easy to prepare when s
Chapter 2Present time Markus pov"I'll take two slot cards for the game, please," I said to Melissa, who was managing the game cards.Melissa raised an eyebrow, eyeing me with concern. "You're here without Scarlett? Are you sure everything is okay? Did you two have another fight?"She rummaged through her worn leather bag, tied around her waist, as she spoke. The mention of Scarlett's name brought up memories of our past, and I felt a low growl rising in my throat. It had been months since I last saw her, but the wound still felt raw."Can I have my slot card, Melissa? I don't want to miss out on any of the games," I said.Melissa's expression turned hostile. "Fine, take it! You're desperate to break free from your shackles. I can't stand sluggish men like you," she snapped, tossing the card at me with force. Her words cut deep, and I felt a shiver run down my spine as she added, "Poor fucking werewolf."My eyes locked onto hers, and I nodded curtly. "How did you know I'm a werewol

Chapter 4Scarlett pov"I'd prefer a real drink, not this bubbly stuff," I told the bartender, my tone firm. Just then, a gruff voice beside me spoke up, "Scarlett is your go-to, what's with the rejection?" I felt a sudden itch in my throat, urging me to lash out, but instead, a loud, uncharacteristic belch escaped my lips, filling the room and drawing curious glances from nearby patrons. "Excuse me," I said calmly, my voice laced with genuine apology."Ah, we're used to that from you!" someone in the crowd quipped, prompting a burst of laughter at my expense. I shot back, "Yeah, that's because I'm an ass!" - a retort that only seemed to amuse them further. Realizing I'd said too much, I hastily grabbed my jacket from the bartender's counter and made a swift exit, slamming the wooden door behind me. The door's cheerful Christmas bell above it seemed jarringly out of place as I emerged into the bright sunlight, which hit me like a slap in the face."City bound?" the Uber driver asked,
Chapter 5Scarlett pov"Elena?" I whispered, my face pale with shock, as I struggled to comprehend the sight before me. I rushed forward, arms open wide, but instead of a warm embrace, she pushed me away, her hands firm on my chest. I stumbled back, my hair whipping sideways as I collided with the door. "Why...why are you pushing me away?" I demanded, confusion and hurt etched on my face. "What are you doing here?" I asked again, but her response only added to my bewilderment. She looked at me with a mix of surprise and curiosity, shaking her head gracefully. "Who are you?" she countered, her question sending shivers down my spine."Hey, miss, I brought you here to stay, not to cause trouble," Nyx said, gently grasping my wrist, but I pulled away, crossing my arms under my chest and turning to face him. "What now? Are you saying I'm causing trouble? That's my friend Elena! Don't make me feel like I'm losing my mind," I exclaimed, playfully punching his chest. He winced, groaning loud
Chapter 6Katherine povI found myself uncomfortable with the woman's gaze, which seemed to linger on me. Her intense stare, accompanied by dramatic eye rolls, made me feel uneasy. I would often force a smile when our eyes met.Scarlett's gruff tone was unmistakable as she said, “How does it feel to live alone, like a loner?” The emphasis on the word “loner’ sparked a defensive response within me, but I chose to laugh it off. “That's my problem to deal with, don't you think?” I replied, my voice dripping with sarcasm as I shrugged my shoulders and pocketed my hands. I turned to escape into a book, but my solitude was short-lived. A gentle hand on my shoulder sent shivers down my spine, and I spun around to face Scarlett, my eyes wide with surprise. “How did you get here?” I asked, my voice laced with astonishment. She replied simply, “I walked.'"The sound of footsteps on the stairs caught our attention, and we both turned to look in that direction. “Nyx,” I whispered, smiling at the
Scarlett povAs I stepped into the new building, my mind was totally preoccupied with that wild woman who looked just like Elena. Please, let it not be Elena trying to play games with me; I would never let her live that down."Welcome, Scarlett, to my little abode," she greeted, all calm and collected, her smile shining like she was trying to sell me a house. I couldn't help but roll my eyes, brushing off her overly friendly vibe."Thanks, miss," I managed to mutter, my lips twitching as a reluctant smile threatened to escape.“It’s all good! Katherine has mentioned you a lot; maybe we could be friends. I…” she trailed off, her brow scrunching up in thought. I found myself at a loss for words, caught off guard."Miss," I called softly, motioning to her as she nervously fidgeted with her fingers. A wave of guilt hit me; maybe I was being too harsh. I wrapped my arms around her, lifting her chin to meet my gaze, and noticed a tear resting on my palm."Wait, were you crying?" I asked, my
