ALICIA
It's on a Friday afternoon and I can't concentrate in class. The lecturer keeps looking my way and I pretend that I am serious but my mind is far away. I am thinking about my former pack which is miles away, where I fled after being rejected by the Alpha. My memory goes back to the night when it all happened. We were all gathered at the pack house for a party organized by Benedict, our Alpha. His son Eric was celebrating his twentieth birthday and this was the opportune moment to crown him as the new Alpha. My mother had tagged me along against my wishes. She insisted on taking me with her because the Alpha had decreed that every pack member should attend the party. The reason I didn't want to attend was because I knew Eric as a very contemptuous person who looked down on those below him. At the party I stayed outside because I didn't want to encounter him and the kind of friends he kept. I went to the swimming pool and relaxed on the reclining sofa, listening to the loud music inside the pack house ballroom. Occasionally I would hear loud ululations but I cared less what was happening. Then at some point I started feeling something strange. My wolf was getting restless and I wondered what she was up to. I got up from the chair and put on my shoes just as a strong scent filled the air, kind of intoxicating me. As I tried to figure out what was happening, a door next to the swimming pool opened and Eric emerged, dressed sharply and walking as if he owned the world. He was coming towards me. In the dim light I could see that he looked extremely beautiful and his body was finely tuned. No doubt he had been using the gym. His hair was neatly cropped and his jet black beard made him very attractive. My wolf was now uncontrollable. “He is our mate Alicia. He is the one we have been waiting for.” She was saying. Just a few months ago I had celebrated my eighteenth birthday and my mother had told me to be patient, my mate will show up some day. In my imaginations, I didn't think he was right here under my nose. But Eric? Eric didn't give me time to think. He was standing before me in no time. Meanwhile, my wolf was pestering me, telling me to utter the all important word. He looked into my eyes with his blue eyes. It was as if he was reading my soul. I knew him and his contempt for the low class but the moon goddess had decided that he was my mate so I had no alternative. I opened my mouth. “Ma...” He grasped me by the shoulders with his strong hands, almost breaking my bones. His contemptuous look was written all over his face. “Don't even think about it Alicia Waters. You don't think for a moment that I will allow you to become my mate you lowlife Omega." He said. “I hereby reject you as my mate.......” I didn't hear the rest of his speech because my wolf was hurting inside my head and my shoulders were aching. He later threw me into the swimming pool and walked away. As I swam out I saw him disappearing into the pack house. “Do you have a problem Alicia?" The lecturer asks me. Immediately I wake up from my reverie and realize that I have been so absent minded for a long time. “Not at all Mr Jeremy.” I reply as I promise to myself that I'll concentrate now. Soon I'll be doing my last test then I'll graduate after a few months later. I need to be serious with these studies. After the rejection I sneaked out of the pack house undetected then left the pack without biding goodbye to anyone because I felt that they betrayed me. I ran into the woods bordering our pack. I was determined to stay away from everyone even if it meant that I become a rogue. That night I was attacked by an unknown wild animal but saved just in time by two men. I have a very big scar on my face even today, inflicted on me by the beast. The two men who rescued me were Benjamin and his son David. Later that night they took me to their house deep in the woods where they lived, away from any pack. I came to know that they came here because their pack had been ran down by rogues and everyone killed. They lived with Melissa, David's sister who instantly became my friend, almost like a sister to me. She always told me about the raid on their pack that resulted to her mother's death. We didn't stay in the woods for long because an order came from the werewolf council that we must join a pack and that's how we found ourselves here at the Westside pack. I joined college immediately so as to finalize on the studies I was doing at our pack when I left two years ago and that is what I am doing right now. “Do we have any questions?” The lecturer asks, drawing my attention back to the class. I realize that I have wasted a whole forty five minutes thinking about my past and this is something I shouldn't be doing now that I am about to graduate. “Well, we will continue next time. I wish you all a nice weekend.” He says as he polishes his glasses on his way out. Immediately the class starts talking, loud consultations. This is going to be a nice weekend for all the members of this pack, I mean the original members, not people like me who got assimilated just the other day. At the pack house there is going to be a party this evening and everyone is talking about it. I guess everyone is going, except me because I don't like how people look at me. You see, my scar makes me look ugly, really ugly. Sometimes I feel uneasy when in the company of people who don't know me, and in most instances when I meet new people they always have the same question, how I got the scar. I have given thousands of explanations until I am now tired of it all. Therefore this night I will walk to our small house, eat supper and sleep early. Drake, the Alpha of this pack is looking for his mate and he is convinced that she is here in the pack. The aim of the party is to identify the mate and i am not interested. I would be interested in seeing how the whole party will end because the competition is stiff. Many girls from our college think that they will be Drake's mate and since he can't choose all of them, I would like to see the disappointments on the faces of those who will not be chosen. I leave the class as my classmates get busy sprucing up to look good. At home I find Melissa, David and Benjamin getting ready to go. “Thank goodness you are here. I almost went to the party without you.” Melissa says. We are inside our shared bedroom. “But I am not going. I am feeling unwell and not in a mood to celebrate. I just need to sleep.” I say as I sit on my bed. “Too bad. Have you taken any meds?” She asks, looking concerned. “No. I'll be fine.” I say. “Are you sure? I mean, you will miss something my dear. A party like this is not something you should skip. Who knows, your mate could be out there looking for you?” She insists. I remove my shoes and get into bed properly. “Mate? I am not ready for that. Thanks Melissa for your concern. You go out there and have fun. I wish you find your mate tonight.” I say. She giggles as she joins Benjamin and David who are only so eager to leave. Later, after about six hours they come back home and Melissa comes straight to the bedroom. “How was the party?” I ask out of curiosity. She seems disinterested, but she tells me that Alpha Drake hasn't found his mate. “He insists that his mate is right here in this pack, and she must be among those who didn't attend the party.” She adds.ALICIA.“Hey rogue, how are you doing?” Bernice shouts as she enters the classroom. It's on a Saturday morning and I thought I will be the only one in class so that I can catch up on what I missed yesterday. But now with Bernice around I don't think I will be doing any studies.Bernice and I know each other for a very long time because we were together at my former pack. She was the daughter of a single mother who later left the pack to unknown destinations only for me to discover that they moved here. Bernice has changed from that friendly girl to a bully who keeps on tormenting me, calling me all sorts of names. Of late she calls me a rogue because of my stay in the woods. I always ignore her. “You won't answer me Scarface?” She starts coming closer. The name Scarface is intended to irk me. She is referring to the scar on my face. I ignore that too.“Listen, you can't just ignore me. You are not in my level so you better be humble and answer my simple questions.” She says as she si
ALICIA I have been having a problem from the day I was attacked in the forest. My wolf disappeared completely. I think it's because of the serious injuries the beast inflicted on me. Melissa told me that I spent about a week in bed unconscious. Since then I have tried severally to summon my wolf but to no avail. Right now I need her most but still she is nowhere to be found. Drake towers before me, the sleeves of his shirt rolled up to reveal muscular arms, networks of veins intertwined with toned muscles. That is all I can see for now because my head is bowed but I belief that he is a sight to behold. The girls didn't throw themselves at him for nothing. Silence reigns for a very long time and I just wish that this ends soon so that I may go home. I am inside the biggest office in this pack and the owner is standing in front of me, saying nothing, watching me as I teetering on the brink of fear. “What's your name?” He finally says and I lift up my eyes to look at his. They are st
DRAKEI can't believe what Alicia has just done. I don't know whether her actions are equal to a rejection or not. If it's a rejection then it will be too bad. As the Alpha, and as a man, it would have been better if I was the one doing the rejection. There is however something I don't understand. Where is her wolf or why is it not responding? Usually, when mates meet, it's their respective wolves that feel the attraction. My wolf already identified her as my mate, so why didn't her's do the same? So many questions linger in my brain after she left and I can't find any peace because my wolf won't let me.“She will come back brother, don't worry so much.” Victor says as he pours some coffee for me. Victor is my step brother. My mother died a long time ago when I was a small boy. I remember how much she loved me because I was her only child. When she died my father was very devastated and withdrawn. He retreated into some sort of cocoon and concentrated all his efforts on pack work. I w
THIRD PERSON'S POVBernice and Tiffany meet at the canteen on Sunday morning. Tiffany is Bernice's best friend and partner in crime. They have done so many despicable things together and what ties them to each other is the love for crime. As they drink their coffee they talk in low tones.“Tiffany! Just tell me what I am going to do about Scarface because I am losing it.” Bernice seethes in cold rage. She's holding her cup so tightly as if in an attempt to crush it.“Who is Scarface?” Tiffany asks indifferently.Bernice looks at her in disbelief, wondering whether Tiffany has just landed from outer space. Scarface is a girl who is fast gaining popularity among the students and teaching fraternity, with almost everyone talking about her. Mostly, they talk about how goodhearted she is and her dislike for controversy. Just the other day the school administration was thinking about giving her some leadership position and they quietly interviewed some students regarding the same. Bernice k
ALICIAWhen I get home it's already late in the evening and everyone is worried about my lateness. I never stay out late and my routine is well known. Besides, I have duties assigned to me and I am expected to play my part. I find Benjamin watching TV with David. Melissa is in the kitchen.“Hi guys. Sorry I am late.” I say as I walk towards them. Melissa hears my voice and joins us, very happy to see me.“Hey dear.” She speaks. “I was almost about to call you. Dinner is ready. Come help me in serving.” She pulls me into the kitchen and we start with preparations. The sweet aroma of the food reminds me that I am starving.“I know you are eager to find out where I spent the day.” I break the silence at the dining table. I have now silenced my hunger pangs and I feel like talking. What I have gone through is not something I can keep away from my family anyway.“Yes please. I'll be only too glad to hear that. You see, earlier today the Beta and Gamma found me at work and asked me about y
ALICIAOn Monday morning I arrive at school very early eager to continue on where I left on Saturday morning. Classes are going to start at midmorning so I have some time alone to do my studies. There are no other students and I take advantage of the silence and delve into my books, but some shadow stands in front me. I think of telling whoever it is to walk away and let me study, but when I look up and find out who it is, I give up. Maybe I should just go back home and come back when classes start.“Hi Scarface.” Bernice says with a sly smile on her face. Behind her is another girl whose name I can't recall.“What do you want this time?” I ask her, cutting to the chase. Her smile changes into a sneer and I can see the contempt that she has for me, it's so tangible. I wonder what it is that I did to her.“You think you are so smart, don't you? But the truth is that you are just a big piece of crap.” She says to the amusement of the girl behind her who grins from ear to ear as she has
ALICIA“If it was someone else, I would have banished them Alicia.” Drake says. We are together in his office and he's seated behind his big desk while I sit on the couch. After the scene in school he asked the administration to give severe punishment to Bernice and Tiffany. As for me, he told me to come with him to his office and I was frightened all along the way. I thought that he was coming to read me the riot act and banish me from the pack. This alone instilled so much fear in me because Benjamin and his children were my family now and I couldn't fathom leaving them.“I am so sorry for allowing my anger to take control of me. I promise that I won't let that happen again.” I say. He scribbles something on an open file on his desk then looks up to face me.“What really happened?” He asks as he puts down his pen. I narrate to him everything, starting with the taunting by Bernice and the insults. I stress the point that all these actions against me happen without any provocation.“W
ALICIAAfter lunch I stay on for a while. I decide to help the workers with the dishes and cleaning up the house before leaving. Drake tries to talk me out of it but when I insist he gives up and tells me that he is going to his office and that should I need him I should go there. One of the maids, Katrina is very friendly and we talk a lot as we clean up the kitchen.“Are you his mate?” She asks me. I don't know how to answer this one because I don't know the answer.“Maybe, maybe not.” I say.“I'll stick with the maybe. Now, let me tell you Alicia, you are the most luckiest girl alive. Drake is a great man. He treats us his workers very well so it goes without saying that he will treat his mate like a queen.” She says with a motherly tone. Katrina is about thirty five years old and she has worked for this family since when she was about eighteen. She tells me that her mate is one of the fighters of this pack and when I ask her whether she knows Benjamin and David she says she does.
ALICIA Aunt Regina and I share a few moments, but I don't reveal anything about myself to her. I even decline an offer to take me to my parents. At first it looks like a good idea, where I can go and bide my time waiting for the war to end, but then I am a fighter, and I belong to the battlefield. Secondly, my mate is worried about my whereabouts and I want to end his anxiety so that he can participate in the war without worrying about me.“Listen aunt, I can't go to my parents. I want to go somewhere else right away.” I tell her when she insists on taking me home.“You never cease to amaze me my child. But where are you going?” She has already brought me some of her clothes, and when I wear them they are so tight. I bet I am bigger than her by a few inches. We have joked about my weight for a while and laughed a little. Perhaps this was what I needed, a light moment. “Aren't you afraid of what might happen to you when they find out that you let me go?” I avoid her question, opting
ANDREW'S POV The door is going to open any moment now. Someone has been fiddling with the padlocks for some time and I can hear every time he succeeds in picking through one. I have already deduced that they are Invaders, having heard earlier as they slaughtered the guards. They want me now, to slaughter me too, but I won't let it happen so easily.I already know about the existence of a death sentence on me and slaying their leader in battle must have added some salt into a fresh wound. They must be on fire. The hut doesn't have any single weapon I can defend myself with, and I get too anxious every minute a padlock is unlocked. They must be experts in this art. Then at last I hear them disengaging the bolts and I know that my time has come, to live or to die. I position myself strategically behind the door and wait, as the door slowly squeaks and finally opens. My adrenaline levels are at an all time high, and I am ready for any eventuality. What comes in first is a sword, the tip
ALICIA I am floating inside what looks like a bottomless void. I try to establish some footing but I am powerless, so weak. I look around and all I can see is an vast plain, shrouded in endless spires of mist.“Am I in heaven? Then does that mean that I died?” I mutter to myself. Then it dawns on me that I am actually dead. Maybe I am somewhere in heaven's holding chamber, being cleared to get in. This explains the lack of energy in me. I am in the spiritual realm, I am no longer on earth, my body must have died.Everything comes back to me and I remember how my body suffered on earth. The wolves bane in my blood, the bruises and the substance Eric injected into my veins. My body couldn't hold all that poison, and that's how it died. I break into tears, tears of agony, of hatred. I should not have died before exacting revenge on Eric. I had vowed to teach him a very good lesson for what he did to me when he rejected me years ago. Not to mention all the torture he subjected me to rec
DRAKE'S POVYesterday was the day the war was fought fiercely. We have never fought like this before. Some rogues took us away from the battlefield but we managed to subdue them. All in all the rogue army was beaten to a pulp and if they manage to rise again then I'll applaud their spirit. By the time we left the battleground there were about a hundred of their fighters dead and a large number wounded. Their top commanders had escaped or hidden from the Juggernaut that was our army. Whatever had motivated us should stay with us even today and into the future. However we suffered losses too and our biggest loss was the death of one of our leaders, the Gamma of Lazarus' pack. He had charged at Andrew Waters with at least four of our men. Andrew had injured the men and struck a lethal blow on the Gamma, killing him on the spot. We learned of his death very late in the evening because we came back late. His trusted men brought his body home and his family and the whole pack were inconsola
ALICIA “Find the camp where I was being held before I was brought here Valerie. I need to send a message to my brother being held there.” I whisper to Valerie.“I know where it is. The guards here don't keep secrets.” She tells me.“Please, go there and find where they have kept a man known as Andrew. He is my brother. If you manage to see him, tell me where I am.” I say.“Anything for you Alicia. I will try all I can to ensure you are released.” She says.“Well, leave now before the guards throw you out.” I say. She walks out slowly, her shoulders heavy. She's carrying so much weight on her mind. After she's gone I manage to sleep a few winks. It takes what looks like eternity for morning to come, but eventually it does come. I am in so much pain and so weak but the natural light that is slowly creeping in gives me some hope. Drake must be looking for me now, very seriously. He knows about the rogue camp and that is where he will look first, then I hope he will search deeper and fin
ALICIA Later in the night the chains that pin me to the wall are removed and I am put into hand cuffs. Two other people come in, carrying a small table that they place at a corner a short distance away from me. As they walk out I notice an assortment of weapons on top of the table. They include knives, razor blades, scalpels and some other crude weapons. I know what is going to follow.“Alicia, I bring you a visitor. Be kind to him." Abed says. The two men consult for a while but I don't hear what they say. Abed walks out immediately and I hear his footsteps as they fade into the corridor.“Alicia, as you can see, I am here to persuade you. My name is Dwayne and I am here to replace Abed who has been given some other assignments. I am a bit reasonable and if you cooperate you will find that I am a cool guy." He says. I keep quiet. He starts circling the cell. “My role here is very simple." He says from behind me. “I want you to denounce Drake as your mate, and once you do that I wil
ALICIA The door to the hut opens and I spring up from my corner. I have managed to sleep on the damp floor and the visitors have just woken me up. There is a familiar scent, that of Eric.“Bring her out, but leave her criminal brother. We'll deal with him later.” He instructs. Two females walk quickly to where I am and frogmarch me towards the door. I can sense that Andrew is watching us, so I see no need to alert him.“Wait!” He growls in the darkness. “Where are you taking my sister?” No one answers him. I see him struggling to get up, but he's handcuffed from behind.“Touch her and I'll kill you with my bare hands Eric. Do anything to her and you will regret you loser!” He shouts. Eric walks in just as we approach the door.“Shut up Andrew. You are going to die, having outlived your usefulness. You sabotaged our mission and helped your sister to kill our warriors. I'd worry about myself if I were you.” Eric taunts him before walking behind us, then locking the door. I can still he
ANDREW They have brought Alicia to the camp, a camp that has been razed to the ground and all prisoners released and evacuated. Bodies of our dead warriors litter the compound and there's no evidence of any fighting. This means that they were found unawares or even sleeping as usual and murdered in cold blood.Brice can see what his lax warriors have brought unto us, and now more than anything else we need shelter from the elements. Then there's the thorny issue of my sister Alicia. She has regained consciousness but now she is very weak and even though her eyes are open she can't talk. She still lies on the stretcher she was brought in as Alpha Eric assesses the damage or what is left in our camp. There's nothing much to see as the only remaining structure in the whole compound is the hut that has the radio equipment and also acts as an extra cell for prisoners. I decide to stay besides Alicia and wait for Eric to come back and explain to me why he has taken my sister. I understand
ALICIA The next morning the war starts in earnest. Our side is very energized as we move out of the camp, marching towards the battlefield. There are four commanders today, the Gamma, the Beta, Alpha Lazarus and Alpha Drake. I'm also among the leaders of a women only battalion with about one hundred warriors. The warriors, more enthusiastic than before, are chanting victory songs for their respective leaders, praising and extolling them. My warriors praise me as the first ever woman wartime Luna who has left the comfort of her pack house and joined the battleground to fight for honor and friendship.“Hail the slayer of demon Patricia! Hail the great Alicia!” They chant.Today I feel it's going to be a day like no other, the spoils will be many. Something tells me that today will mark a turning point in this war. I'm certain that things will turn for the better. We get to the big clearing that is the battleground and we run to meet our enemies, each side shouting loud chants, ready to
