Camilla’s POV

My hand pressed against the cool wood of Dante's office door, my heart slamming hard against my chest like it would burst free any second. It had been a week since the incident, a week since Dante had walked out of this very room, leaving me on the floor sobbing my heart out. He hadn't looked at me, hadn't said a word to me since.

"Dante…" I whispered, barely loud enough for even me to hear it. I dropped my hand, stepped back, and swallowed against the lump in my throat. He wouldn't open it. He never did.

I listened every night to the heavy footsteps pacing in the study, the low of his voice speaking with Alex and Anthony over plans. Working tirelessly to find Jasper but never including me. This wasn't my mission.

I'd tried to help with anything I could get my hands on, yet every time Dante would dismiss me with no more than a curt shake of his head or a cold glance.

I'd become invisible in his eyes.

And still, I refused to let go. Not with my son, not with him.

DANTE'S POV.Standing right at the edge of the river, where my boots sank into damp earth, my fists had a whitened knuckle.Alex's voice cut through the steady rush of the water. "Dante, we have scoured the area. “Are you sure we are in the right place?"I nodded stiffly, gaze affixed on the water. "Yes, I'm sure. I am not leaving until we find something."Anthony wearily came up to me, worn out but set. "We've been here for hours. Maybe we should fall back, re-plan, and…”"No." My voice was colder than ice, and it cut the tension. "We keep searching."Anthony exchanged a glance with Alex, but neither of them dared do more. They knew better. This wasn't a democracy; this was an order. The necklace. It's a tracking device that, while planted inside Jasper's necklace months in advance for any incidents like this, which I'm so grateful for now, I would never have believed this could ever be a necessity if the tracker hadn't led me here. It is the only thread that I knew, and still now us

Camilla's POVThat night was unbearably hot, and the silence seemed to cleave on, choking. I wasn't able to stay put in my room and started pacing. It seemed like the walls in my room were closing in on me, and the seconds dragged like an eternity.I just could not bear it. I had to talk with Dante.I slipped out into the dark hall, my fingers of one hand tightening on the edge of my robe, quietly and silently. I stood outside Dante's study, my heart pounding in my chest. The door was open, and the thin light spilled into the hall, so I took another big breath and went in.Slumped over his desk were papers everywhere: wrinkled shirt, sleeves rolled up the elbows, mussed long hair from running his hands through it. Anger tautened the leanness in his face; tension spoke silently of an emotion managed but little below the surface."Dante," I whispered as I entered. His head came up; eyes slitted. "What is it that you are doing here?”My throat was dry as I swallowed. "I can't stand the

Camilla's POVI did not want to go into that study again. Not after the way he had left me in tatters last night. And yet my feet moved of their own accord, as if fueled by something deep inside of me I couldn't suppress. Desperation, maybe. Perhaps I just wanted him to say anything, anything, which would not cut me to the core.I didn't knock; I merely opened the door and stepped inside the darkened room. He stood by the window, his back to me, one hand clutched on the frame, the other wrapped around a glass of whiskey. His shoulders were tight, his posture unyielding. He didn't turn around."I told you to leave me alone," he said, his voice flat but threaded with exhaustion."I won't," I whispered, shaking. "We need to talk.""There's nothing to say." His voice went sharp though he didn't turn to me. "You've said enough."I swallowed hard and made myself keep going. "Dante, you can't shut me out like this all the time. We need each other, we are both suffering.”He whirled on his he

Camilla's POVIt had become a prison of memories. Every day, the walls seemed to shut in tighter, heavier, bearing me down under the burden of my sorrow. Wherever I looked, there was Jasper: his toys scattered over the bedroom floor, his little shoes standing all in a line by the door as if he would burst through it at any moment, smiling; that bright smile that brightens the darkest of days.He never did, though. And this silence was unbearably loud.Dante hadn't said a word to me since that night in his study. Now he barely even acknowledged that I existed, bypassing me with an empty gaze, his features set into a permanent mask of stone-as if I wasn't there. But rather than pulling us together, the opposite seemed true, farther into our private hells.I had spent most of my time in Jasper's room; it was the only place I could still feel him, still pretend this nightmare hadn't swallowed us whole. If I wasn't going to fix my broken home, I could at least keep my company intact.I walked down the halls, my heels clicking with purpose, people shifting around me to make space and nodding to murmur hello. CAMILLA'S POV The door bursts open with such force that the handle slammed against the wall. My breath caught, and I froze. He stood in the doorway, his fury brimmed to melt steel in his eyes, clenching his jaw, his fists shook beside him as if he was about to strike something, or better still, somebody."Camilla," he said my name as if it were a curse. The words fall from his lips without warmth, not semblances of the man who used to love me but cold, venomous anger.I blink, incredulous at what had just transpired. My heart pounds against my chest as I automatically rise from bed, setting space between us. "Dante, hear me out, I don't know how this happened. ""Don't play dumb with me, Camilla. I have seen everything." His voice was very low and menacing. "Tell me, since when has this been happening?"My brain froze. “I don't understand.” My throat clutched. "What are you talking about?""The affair. With Anthony," he spits, and my blood runs cold. "How long has it been happening,

Dante’s POVI hadn't slept a second. The hours dragged along, choking me with their dark cloud of rage and disbelief till dawn. And sitting in the corner of my room, looking at nothing, I saw all shadows upon the wall. It's just the same scene that keeps running in my head since yesterday, deeper with every breath.Camilla. Anthony.I felt like I'd just been hit with a sledgehammer. I was in mourning, lost in my sorrow, and I thought she was with me, grieving with me. But she found comfort in him. Anthony, one of my trusted men, the man I put there to protect her when I couldn't.And then they went behind my back and started an affair.A bitter laugh exploded from my lips because there was nothing funny, but rather desolate. I also felt pretty grateful that Anthony was there for Camilla when I wasn't even able to be, who gave her strength and comfort when I couldn't, but it was fake, there was a motivation behind it, and Camilla…“My god, how was I so blind?” I rubbed my palms on my f

Camilla's POVI shot up from the bed as my heart tumbled faster, like it was in a mad relay to outrun my rib cage. The room spun once as my vision started blurring in a second. The ringing of my heartbeat in my ears drowned everything out as the visual of Dante pointing at us with his pistol flashed before me."Dante." My voice shook; the words were painted with terror. "It's not what you think."His eyes gleamed bright with wildness, his jaw clenched hard, and every inch of him unrelenting, a statue standing, not quite believing me."Not what I think?" he growled in a low rumble-the contained rage started to slip from him. "Then explain, Camilla. Because where I'm standing and staring, it looks pretty fucking obvious to me."Anthony groaned beside me, rubbing his head as if he had been in a deep sleep. I whipped my head around to him, the weight of the situation crushing me."Anthony, wake up!" I shoved his shoulder harder than I meant to. A few times he blinked before his eyes lande

DANTE'S POV.The flight landed in Chicago right after midnight, but it felt like a couple of days had passed since I'd last slept. My head pounded with exhaustion, but not from the travel; from the weight I carried, the guilt clinging to me like a second skin. I'd left this city in a storm of my own making and was coming back, hopeful to undo the damage.I slumped back against the seat of the black SUV. Alex had arranged to wait for us at the airport. The city skyline blurred out the window, but I didn't notice. My head was too full of Camilla. I'd hurt her. When she needed me to have her back, to shield her from the hurt and let her grieve in a safe place, that was when I lashed out and pushed her away.I pressed my fingers against my temples and breathed deeply. I was scared, I realized. Afraid of facing her, of looking into her eyes and seeing the pain and hurt and knowing I'd put it there, if not all but most of it. But I couldn't run anymore, I had to make it right. "Alex," I wh
