CAMILLA'S POV

I sat amidst the darkly illuminated atmosphere of Jasper's room as his scent refused to leave his pillow. His nightstand still had the toy aircraft, a reminder that life once moved here.

I always find my solace in this room, a feeling that my son was still alive.

Dante had left me to suffer alone and drown with guilt. I haven't had a sound sleep for days. With closed eyes came all his images: laughter, cries, and last moments before he finally disappeared.

I pulled his blanket tighter into my grasp, clutching onto it, as if somehow this could bring him back. My eyes had burned from a lack of sleep, pounding in my head from non-stop crying, but I hadn't moved. I simply did not want to leave this room, because it is the last place that feels like him.

A knock came on the door and cut through the silence of the atmosphere. I said nothing in response; maybe whoever it was would go away.

The door creaked open, followed by the sound of Anthony's voice: "Camilla, it's me."

I'd left this city in a storm of my own making and was coming back, hopeful to undo the damage.I slumped back against the seat of the black SUV. Alex had arranged to wait for us at the airport. The city skyline blurred out the window, but I didn't notice. My head was too full of Camilla. I'd hurt her. When she needed me to have her back, to shield her from the hurt and let her grieve in a safe place, that was when I lashed out and pushed her away.I pressed my fingers against my temples and breathed deeply. I was scared, I realized. Afraid of facing her, of looking into her eyes and seeing the pain and hurt and knowing I'd put it there, if not all but most of it. But I couldn't run anymore, I had to make it right. "Alex," I wh

Camilla's POVI shot up from the bed as my heart tumbled faster, like it was in a mad relay to outrun my rib cage. The room spun once as my vision started blurring in a second. The ringing of my heartbeat in my ears drowned everything out as the visual of Dante pointing at us with his pistol flashed before me."Dante." My voice shook; the words were painted with terror. "It's not what you think."His eyes gleamed bright with wildness, his jaw clenched hard, and every inch of him unrelenting, a statue standing, not quite believing me."Not what I think?" he growled in a low rumble-the contained rage started to slip from him. "Then explain, Camilla. Because where I'm standing and staring, it looks pretty fucking obvious to me."Anthony groaned beside me, rubbing his head as if he had been in a deep sleep. I whipped my head around to him, the weight of the situation crushing me."Anthony, wake up!" I shoved his shoulder harder than I meant to. A few times he blinked before his eyes lande

*CAMILLA’S POV* I sat on the edge of the bed, my hand resting lightly on my stomach. The small swell of life beneath my palm and Jasper my seven year old son from another man, were the only things keeping me going these days. Three months pregnant. I could hardly believe it myself. I thought that maybe this could be my second chance. Maybe with the arrival of his baby, Tom would change. And just maybe he would look at me differently, treat me differently. But the hope I clung onto was fragile like a thread that could snap at any time.I’ve been locked up for three months now and Tom has refused to tell me how Jasper was doing since I tried escaping with him. I’ve tried to talk to him but he has paid me no mind. His actions were all too familiar. I knew if I wanted to see Jasper I would have to do as I was told. I had endured so much pain from Tom and being married to him for 7 years, I had finally reached my limits. I didn’t want to fight anymore.I was tired of the constant beatin

*CAMILLA’S POV*Everything was pitch black. I couldn’t see, couldn’t hear. It was as though I had been swallowed by the abyss. Was this the afterlife? Was this what death felt like? I floated in that darkness, wondering if this was how it all ended if this was my eternal punishment. Life had been nothing but misery and I had done nothing to deserve such ill fate.A sound. Faint at first, like a distant hum, but it grew louder. I strained to listen, focusing on the noise, hoping for something, anything, to pull me out of the void. It sounded familiar, like the rhythmic beeping of a machine. The more I focused, the more I realized… it sounded like beeps you’d hear in a hospital.I became more aware of my surroundings. My eyes fluttered open, my lids feeling impossibly heavy. The harsh, fluorescent lights blinded my vision, making me squint as I tried to adjust. The sterile smell of antiseptic filled my nostrils. It was a hospital, but something about it felt too familiar, like I had bee

*CAMILLA’S POV*Today was the day I was to be discharged from the hospital, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease. I lay there, staring at the white ceiling, Jasper peacefully sleeping in the crib beside me. I remembered this day all too well. In my past life, this was the day I met Dante again. Our encounter had been brief, barely memorable. The conversation we had was cut short by my father, who had come to help me back home. This time I needed to take advantage of our encounter. “ He should be out in the next two minutes,” I mumbled looking at the clock hanging on the wall.I disheveled my tied-up curly ginger hair. So I looked as sick as I could. He had asked about my health and looked slightly worried about me in my first life and I was going to take advantage of that now. “I will inflict times two of the pain I received on those who hurt us,” I whispered to sleeping Jasper. I had a second chance, and I would be damned if I didn’t use it. I took a deep breath and stepped out

  • SAVING MY MAFIA BOSS   114: REGRET AFTER RAGE

DANTE'S POVOutside of the panes of glass framing the hotel window, the Tokyo skyline stretched far out. Very distantly, the roar of jet engines droned softly in my ears. A thousand miles away from Chicago, the weight of home hung heavy on my chest.Jasper, Camilla. Their names echo in my head-the sound of this never-stopping drum, with every second passed a little louder than the one before. I had been telling myself this trip was necessary and would show me perspectives with distance. So far, it has done nothing but echo; the gnawing at my soul."Boss, you ready?" Alex's voice crackled through the phone I had on speaker, breaking into my spiraling thoughts. "We've got a meeting with the Japanese investors in thirty minutes."I rubbed my face, trying to come awake inside my skull. "Yeah, I'll be there.""Are you good?" This time, Alex's voice let through shades of concern, more than his originally set nonchalant tone.I hedged. Alex was more than my right-hand man, one of a handful o

CAMILLA'S POV.A soft hum of productivity hovered on sleek glass walls and over the open office spaces, just off-tune with the buzz in C-Care Cosmetics. I'd made sure of it. If I wasn't going to fix my broken home, I could at least keep my company intact.I walked down the halls, my heels clicking with purpose, people shifting around me to make space and nodding to murmur hello. I always ignored the spring of pity in their eyes, I was here for no one's sympathy."Grace" I called, near to jogging and dragging my assistant after me."Yes, Mrs. Draven?" Her voice came with the rush of air as she clasped a tablet to her chest."Reschedule the marketing meeting for tomorrow morning. I need to make sure the review of product development this afternoon is my foremost concern," I instructed. She nodded, her fingers flying across the tablet. "Understood. Camilla's POVTwo months. Sixty days. That was how long it had been since Jasper disappeared. Since Dante and I became two shadows haunting the same house. Since the silence in our home became an unbearable weight that pressed down on my chest.Every breath was a struggle in itself, as if even the house was choking me. I kept thinking the walls had shrunk overnight. This thick silence seemed to compact and throttle me slowly.Dante and I seldomly speak in the house, day in and day out circling around the house like ghosts, the only communications were cold nods or a look from afar. Sometimes I actually wondered whether, with our silences, we said more than we ever had with our voices. But even that silent communication was poisoned, with pain and blame.I told myself he was hitting too, that this stare he shot my way, wasn't the one of cruelty but of survival, but that couldn't stop that wash through me every time he passed by without a word. Piece by piece, I felt I was fading away

  • SAVING MY MAFIA BOSS   111: Silent Sorrow

Camilla's POVIt had become a prison of memories. Every day, the walls seemed to shut in tighter, heavier, bearing me down under the burden of my sorrow. Wherever I looked, there was Jasper: his toys scattered over the bedroom floor, his little shoes standing all in a line by the door as if he would burst through it at any moment, smiling; that bright smile that brightens the darkest of days.He never did, though. And this silence was unbearably loud.Dante hadn't said a word to me since that night in his study. Now he barely even acknowledged that I existed, bypassing me with an empty gaze, his features set into a permanent mask of stone-as if I wasn't there. Yet his pain was wrapped around him like a second skin; I knew mine did the same. But rather than pulling us together, the opposite seemed true, farther into our private hells.I had spent most of my time in Jasper's room; it was the only place I could still feel him, still pretend this nightmare hadn't swallowed us whole.
