PHOEBE

I had barely stepped into the house when I heard my father’s voice call out, “Phoebe.”

I paused, took a deep breath, and turned toward the garden. His voice had that tone, the one that said he wasn’t done with the Ramon conversation. I was still holding onto the warmth of Ramon’s kiss, but it faded a little as I walked outside. The garden looked calm, too calm, like it didn’t know the storm brewing in my chest.

Dad was sitting on one of the garden chairs, arms crossed, staring at nothing in particular. He looked up when I came in.

“Sit,” he said.

I sat on the bench across from him, trying to stay calm.

“What do you know about this Ramon?” he asked suddenly.

I blinked. “What?”

“You heard me. Tell me about him. Who is he? Where’s he from? What does he do?”

“I…” I hesitated, heart skipping. “He told me he’s from the south. Said he moved around a lot as a kid. He works in tech… I think.”

“You think?”

I shifted uncomfortably. “He doesn’t talk a lot about his past, okay? But he’s kin

PHOEBEI couldn’t stop smiling that morning.Even the annoying beep of my alarm clock didn’t get on my nerves like it usually did. I actually smiled as I turned it off, something that never happened. Usually, I’d groan, roll over, and beg the universe for five more minutes. But today? I practically leaped out of bed like it was Christmas morning. There was this bubble of excitement in my chest, warm and fluttery. I sang to myself as I walked into the bathroom, letting the hot water pour over me while I hummed the love song that played on the radio last night. My shower turned into a mini concert, I even used my shampoo bottle as a mic. I didn’t care how silly it was. Today was going to be good. I could feel it.I towel-dried my hair and wrapped it up in a bun, then walked to my wardrobe with purpose. Today needed the perfect outfit. Not too flashy, not too plain, just the right amount of cute to make him smile when he saw me.I pulled out a dozen options before settling on a soft crea

RAMONI didn’t even wait to greet anyone on my way out of the office. I couldn’t. If I stayed another second, I’d probably break down right in front of everyone. And I couldn’t let them see that, not them, not Phoebe. Especially not Phoebe. When I got home, I slammed the door shut behind me, the sound echoing through the space like a warning. I didn’t even bother turning on the lights. I didn’t need them. My body was already moving, fueled by everything I’d been trying to hold in all day. I stormed straight to the back room, where my punching dummy stood in the corner like it had been waiting for me.My fists were already clenched so tightly that my knuckles ached. My jaw was locked, teeth grinding. Every part of me was buzzing with frustration, sadness, and guilt, all mixing in this burning storm I couldn’t shake off. It was like a pressure cooker inside my chest, and if I didn’t let it out, I was going to explode.I didn’t want to think. I didn’t want to feel. I just wanted to hit.

RAMONI stood in front of her, feeling like I’d stepped into a storm I wasn’t ready for.Phoebe looked at me with her arms crossed, her eyes sharp and guarded. Not like before. Not soft. Not kind. Just cold.“What are you doing here?” she asked. Her voice was sharp. Distant.I swallowed hard. “I came to pick up my things.”Her face changed for a second. Hurt, I think. But she blinked it away. “So you’re really leaving then?”I shifted on my feet. “Phoebe… you asked me to leave. I’m just respecting that.”She scoffed and looked away, shaking her head like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “So that’s it? You’re just walking away like a coward?”My chest tightened. “It’s not like that.”She turned back to me fast. “Then what is it like, Ramon? Huh? Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you just gave up on me.”I took a step forward. “I didn’t give up.”“Then what are you doing?” she snapped. “I was angry. I was hurt. But I still expected you to… I don’t know, fight a li

PHOEBEI couldn’t believe it. I actually couldn’t believe it.One second he was standing there in my office, all quiet and acting like everything was done and final, and the next, he was gone. Just like that. Gone.I stood in the middle of the room, staring at the spot where Ramon had stood minutes ago, and my chest felt like it was being crushed. And then the anger came.I grabbed the pen holder from my desk and hurled it across the room. Pens scattered everywhere. I didn’t care.He was supposed to fight for me.I picked up a stack of files and flung them on the floor. Papers floated in the air like leaves. Still didn’t care.“He was supposed to fight,” I mumbled under my breath, kicking the side of my chair. Then I reached for the mug he got me last week, the stupid one that said ‘Don’t Talk to Me Until I’ve Had Coffee’ and smashed it against the wall. PHOEBEThe shoe flew faster than I expected. I was aiming for Billy, but the timing was just bad, really bad. The door opened right as I let go, and instead of hitting one of my annoying brothers, it smacked right into my assistant’s face.“Oh my God!” I gasped, rushing toward her. “Maya! I didn’t…I wasn’t…oh my God, I’m so sorry!”She just stood there, frozen, one hand on her cheek, eyes wide like she was still trying to figure out what just happened. Her mouth opened, then closed, then opened again.“That… really hurt,” she finally said, her voice small.“I know, I know,” I said quickly, flustered. “I’m such a mess right now. I swear I didn’t mean to hit you. It was meant for that idiot over there!” I pointed at Billy, who had now crouched behind the chair like he was in the middle of a war zone.“I was just walking in,” Maya muttered, still stunned. “I didn’t even say anything yet…”“I know!” I said again, practically tripping over my words. “And now your cheek is red, and I’m the

RAMONI slammed the door behind me and let out a heavy sigh. The silence in the house was louder than ever. My shoes echoed on the floor as I walked into the living room. Everything felt tight in my chest. My throat burned, and I kept replaying her face in my mind…Phoebe was hurt, angry, her eyes watery like she was holding everything back.“Idiot,” I muttered to myself. “You really messed that one up.”I pulled off my jacket and tossed it on the couch. “You told her to walk away. Like some fool. Like she meant nothing.”I paced the room, dragging both hands down my face. “She told you to leave and you actually listened? What the hell, man? Who does that? Who actually walks out on someone they…” I stopped short, heart pounding. “Someone they…”I didn’t finish the sentence. Couldn’t. Saying it out loud would make everything worse. Realer.I clenched my fists, frustrated. “You just hurt the only woman who gave a damn about you. Congratulations.”Then, out of nowhere, I heard a creak beh

SHAWNAWhen I thought of marriage, my eyes would light up as I imagined being in bed with my husband, giggling as he whispered sweet words of affection to me. I had looked forward to cooking with him and having food fights every time we did.A sad smile settled on my face as I stared at the ceiling.“How naive I was,” I muttered, my voice breaking. If I had been told I'd be married at age twenty-two, I'd surely believe that but I wouldn't have believed my marriage would be loveless and the complete opposite of all that I had imagined. With a sigh, I sat up in bed. It had been two years since I got married yet it was still the same so thinking about it and regretting it was pointless.I gently got out of bed and sat back down because of how sore I was between my legs and a scowl settled on my face.“Even if he doesn't like me, can't he at least be gentle,” I muttered, frustrated because I was almost always sore anytime I had sex with my husband. As though he heard me, the door to the b

SHAWNAI immediately dashed down the stairs with my bag trying to be as quiet as I could so Damien wouldn’t know I was leaving the house. He didn't care about me enough to be bothered but if he knew I was leaving with my male friend, he'd stop me.It wasn't because he cared or was jealous but because he didn't want me to taint his reputation.I could have taken a taxi instead but it was late at night and someone of my status shouldn't be that careless. There had been times when I was nearly kidnapped because I was married to Damien but I was always lucky. If I ever got kidnapped, that would be the end of me because I doubted he'd come to my rescue.I exited the house and shut the gate behind me before crossing to the opposite side of the road to the blue, run-down car.“Are you okay?” Liam, my old friend, asked when I got into the front seat.We had been friends since college but since I got married, we rarely saw each other for obvious reasons.“Yes, I am. Now let's go,” I said with

RAMONI sighed the second I stepped into the living room and saw him, my uncle, leaning against the doorway like he owned the damn place. His arms crossed over his chest, face twisted with that same old smirk that always made me want to punch something.“What the hell are you doing here?” I asked, tossing my keys on the table harder than I meant to.He didn’t flinch. “I should be asking you that. What the hell were you doing having dinner with them?”I blinked at him, still trying to shake off the warmth from Phoebe’s kiss. “I told you, I’m handling it.”“Handling it?” His voice turned sharp. “You were dining with our enemy like you’re some long-lost son of the family. You were smiling, laughing, kissing that girl like none of this matters.”I clenched my jaw. “Don’t talk about her like that.”“She’s a distraction, Ramon. A pretty one, sure. But a distraction all the same. You’re supposed to take them out, not get in bed with them.”I took a slow step toward him, trying to hold back t

RAMONThe air outside felt cooler than I expected. Maybe it was the heat I’d been holding in through the entire dinner finally releasing, or maybe it was just the way the tension in that house had clung to my skin like a second layer.I didn’t look back as I stepped off their porch. I couldn’t. My pride wouldn’t let me. I heard the door close behind me, and then silence. I shoved my hands in my pockets and started walking. I had no idea where I was going, just that I needed to be anywhere else.“Ramon!”Her voice.I paused, closing my eyes for a second before turning around. Phoebe was hurrying after me, her heels clicking loudly on the pavement. Her eyes were wide, her expression tight with anger and worry.“Ramon, wait! Please,” she said, catching up to me.“It’s fine,” I said quickly, giving her a small smile. “You don’t have to chase after me.”“I do,” she snapped. “You just got up and left in the middle of dinner. What do you expect me to do? Sit there and pretend like that didn’
