Voices murmured from the other side of the thin wall, the bedsprings creaking beneath the weight of bodies. She prepped her pillow to be her earmuffs for yet another night. After their altercation yesterday, the last thing Kate wanted to do was give Colton another reason to pay her a visit. A girly giggle broke through, quickly turning into moans and groans. Kate grimaced in revulsion as the woman insisted on telling Colton over and over and over again just how big he was.

As the moans slowly turned to wailing, Kate felt her patience growing thin. Flipping to face her clock, she gritted her teeth. They had been going at it for twenty minutes now. Surely he was doing this just to piss her off. He’d gone and found the loudest fucking woman at the club and brought her home. She started to scold herself for her thoughts before she stopped. That is exactly what Colton would do. He was an asshole.

Just as Kate was questioning just how much commentary on Colton’s size she could take, a loud banging rattled against her bedroom wall. She growled, springing from the bed and storming through her apartment. She flung open the front door, stepped across to Colton’s, and began pounding on the old wood with as much force as she could muster.

Her fists pummeled into the wood, frustration turning to anger. How the hell had she ended up living next door to the world’s worst neighbor? He was just so fucking inconsiderate.

The door opened, a slightly disheveled man standing on the other side. Blonde hair was sticking up everywhere and his blue eyes were heavy with sleep. Large biceps bulged beneath a crinkled white shirt, while his legs were hidden beneath a pair of black sweats. Even half-asleep, he was incredibly handsome. For a split second, Kate completely forgot why she was there.

His gaze traveled her slender frame before narrowing in on her face. “Colt’s already got one tonight. Maybe tomorrow though, love.”

He made to close the door, only to be stopped by Kate’s insistent fist once more. “Excuse me? I have zero interest in Colton.”

Letting out a chuckle, the handsome stranger rubbed a hand over his face. “I don’t think I’ve heard those words before," he paused for a moment, taking in her furrowed brow. “So if you don’t want Colton, then why are you banging on the door?”

“I live…” Kate trailed off, taking in his sleepy figure. “Were you seriously asleep?”

“Uh, until the crazy lady started beating the shit out of the door, yeah.”

“How can you possibly sleep through that?” she asked, raising her eyebrows in disbelief.

“Through what?” As he spoke, a loud moan echoed through the apartment followed by the familiar description of the length of Colton’s manhood. “Oh that?” he laughed, cocking an eyebrow. “You just tune it out after a while.”

Kate scoffed, shaking her head in bewilderment. “I’ve lived next door for three months now, and there is no way anyone can tune it out.”

“You live next door? I’ve never seen you before.”

“And I’ve never seen you.” She let out a small smile, glancing over his shoulder to the bedroom where the loud moans and groans were only escalating. “Do you think he’ll be finishing up anytime soon? Sleep would be nice at some point tonight.”

“Probably not, and if he heard you banging on the door like a madwoman, he’ll probably go for round two, just to piss you off.”

Kate groaned, rolling her eyes and rubbing her weary face with her hand. “Great.”

“Look, I don’t think I’ll be able to get back to sleep after being so rudely awoken,” he laughed. “And you’re awake, so how about I come over your place and we can hang out?”

“I don’t know you at all. How do I know you aren’t going to steal my stuff or try and take advantage of my sleepy state?”

The man let out a hearty chuckle, shaking his head in amusement. “Does that happen to you a lot, does it?”

Shaking her head, Kate was unable to stop the smile that had begun to spread on her face. She’d almost tuned out the obsessive groaning. “No, and do you know why?” She leaned in conspiratorially, giggling softly as he followed suit. “Because I don’t let strangers into my apartment.”

“Touché. Well how about we hang out here?” He motioned to the hallway. “That way if I start looking suspicious, you can bail into your apartment. Sound good?”

Kate nodded, sliding down the wall and cradling her knees to her chest, as her new friend followed suit. He slipped a cigarette between his thin lips, lighting it up and taking in a long drag. She scrunched her nose at the sound of another exacerbated moan. “Seriously, how does she not have friction burn right now? They’ve been going for ages.”

Smoke came from his nose as he laughed. “Can’t be pleasant.”

“Yet here we are, relegated to the hallway to escape her moaning. How many times does she have to tell him it’s big?” She rolled her eyes as the woman did so, right on cue. “Maybe it’s tiny and she’s trying to make him feel better?”

“God, you’re lucky Colton isn’t here. He’d wave it around for even questioning the length of his dick.”

“Charming. Sounds like a real gentleman.” Pressing her back against the wall, she turned to the man next to her. He sucked his cigarette, his eyebrow raised as he awaited her question. “I didn’t realize anyone else lived with Colton.”

“I tend to spend my nights elsewhere,” he smirked, motioning his head towards the apartment as if to emphasize his point. “Can you imagine bringing a girl home and forcing her to listen to this shit? What a buzz kill.” He let out a long exhale, smoke billowing from his mouth as he spoke. “I’m Austin.”

“Kate.”

The front door of Austin’s apartment clicked open, forcing both of their gazes to the left. Colton emerged, his torso uncovered and grey sweats covering his legs. His hair was a sweaty mess, his usually tanned skin slick and reddened. He lit a cigarette and glanced towards the pair sitting on the tiled floor.

“She won’t give you anything, dude,” he snorted, running his fingers through his hair, sending droplets of sweat into the air. “I don’t think she gets sexual urges. She’s lived next door to me for what? Three months now?”

“Oh please,” Kate scoffed, “I don’t think I could satisfy your constant need to hear how big your dick is.”

“Hey, if they want to tell me, who am I to object? But trust me, it isn’t something I need.” He took another deep draw of his cigarette, casting his gaze to Austin. “She thinks she’s staying the night. I think we’ve got a stage-5 clinger.”

“She’s just stroked your ego for the past hour and you’re just going to kick her out? You’re gross,” she snapped, rising to her feet and giving Austin a small smile. “I’ll see you around.”

Austin gave her a small smile in return. “If you ever get woken by Colton’s lady friends, I’m always up for a late-night chat.”

Kate couldn’t help her laugh. “So every night then?”

“Whenever you need me.”

“And what happened to spending your nights elsewhere?”

Austin grinned, hoisting himself off the floor, blue eyes watching as she stood in her doorway. “I think I found something to stay home for.”

Feeling her cheeks turn a soft shade of pink, Kate stepped inside her apartment, unable to contain the smile that danced on her face. “Goodnight.”

And just like that, the feeling of Colton’s fingers dancing against the hem of her panties didn’t tug at her stomach anymore. It was like he had been erased from her memory.

As her slender frame disappeared behind her wooden door, Colton’s glare rested firmly on the shaggy blonde who was now smiling a bit too wide for his liking. Austin rubbed a hand through his hair, shaking his head in what seemed to be disbelief as he left the hallway himself. Colton stubbed out his partially-finished cigarette, following and trying to calm the anger that panged in his stomach.

Austin slumped on the lounge, blue eyes watching Colton incredulously. “How have I never met her before?”

Colton shrugged, heading into the bedroom. “Don’t get your hopes up, man. It’s never gonna happen.”

“Why? Because you couldn’t get her, you think I can’t?”

His fists balled by his sides and Colton couldn’t help but wonder why he was this affected by the situation in the first place. Shaking his head, he rolled his tongue along his lower lip and spoke, “She’s off-limits.”

Folding his arms across his chest, Austin raised an eyebrow in challenge. “Says who?”

“Says me,” Colton snapped, retreating into his bedroom before a fight could ensue. Just before he slammed the door, he faced his friend. “So don’t get any bright ideas.”

The weekend had fast approached and Kate was thankful, although she wasn’t as exhausted as usual. Colton had been keeping his bedfellows quiet and she had been managing to get a solid eight hours most nights. She’d seen Austin around here and there, but their conversations were short. Kate didn’t want to get involved with anyone even remotely related to Colton, and while he was gorgeous, she couldn’t help but question why a nice guy would be friends with an asshole like Colton James. There had to be something wrong with him, and she didn’t want to get too wrapped up in him before she found out.“Come on, Kate. Have another one,” Paloma cried, setting down the shot glass in front of her. “You’ve been working so hard. Time to live a little.”Kate laughed, downing the shot and wincing as the liquid burned her throat. “I’v

She didn’t want to engage with him any further. She didn’t trust herself. The feeling of him, hard beneath her, made her more aroused than she wanted to admit. Kate tossed and turned. In the depths of Colton’s apartment, she could hear the breathy moans of Paloma and Heath and she hoped it was keeping Colton wide awake. After a hot shower, she still wasn’t able to dull the sensation of him pressing up against her, the feel of his mouth on hers. She understood in that moment why women got hooked. He could make her feel things she hadn’t felt in such a long time. The problem was that he knew it, and he was an ass because of it.She groaned, rolling towards her nightstand. She shuffled through the drawer, pulling out her vibrator and laying back on the bed. She hated that he had this effect on her, that she wanted to feel him inside of her. Kate turned it on, muffling the vibration beneath her blankets as she allowed it to glide along her entrance. She was already completely aroused. Avoiding Colton since their incident had been easier than Kate thought. He had started bringing women home again, and although the woman screamed and wailed and the bedhead banged viciously against the thin wall, Kate kept quiet. She didn’t want to draw his attention to her, and to be fair, after their time together, she understood. She hadn’t seen much of Austin and had been thankful for that too.But she knew it wouldn’t last forever.Returning home from her run, Kate climbed the staircase, wiping the sweat from her brow. She froze at the sight of his shirtless torso, his back once again covered in scratches, his hair messy and damp. He inhaled a deep draw of his cigarette and turned away.Kate’s stomach dropped. She hadn’t known what to expect but she thought it would be a snide comment, at the least. Scolding herself for wanting his attention, she skipped up the remaining steps and unlocked her front door.“You shouldn’t be smoking in the hallway. You sho

The day flew by, and soon it was time for Kate to meet Austin. She straightened out her dress, a long-sleeved white and pink floral number that finished at her mid-thigh, and flipped her wavy hair over her shoulders. She slid on her heels and touched up her makeup as she awaited Austin’s arrival. A moment later, a soft knock rapped on the door. Kate swung it open and enjoyed the darkening of Austin’s sapphire eyes as they raked over her figure.“Kate, you look…” he trailed off, stepped forward to plant a gentle kiss on her cheek. “Incredible.”“Thanks,” she murmured, grabbing her bag and stepping out into the hallway. “Not too shabby yourself.”The door of Colton’s apartment flung open as they began their descent down the staircase, Austin’s hand slipping a little too low on Kate’s back for her liking. She tried to shift under his grasp, but his hand stayed firmly glued. She furrowed her brows, taking in his smirk as he glanced over his shoulder at Colton.Ka

She followed, trying desperately to adjust her clothing as she ran. As Austin barged through Colton’s bedroom door, Kate couldn’t help but shield her eyes. Nothing like it was with Dylan. We’d been together for so long, I’d forgotten what it was like to just be fucked with passion and desire, you know? With Dylan, we had to schedule it around Florence and we were never really in the mood. But now, Heath comes over and just slams me into the bed. It’s so hot.”The yoga instructor let out a stony ‘shh’, her eyes narrowing at Paloma’s vulgar language.“It’s good to see you getting out there again,” Kate hushed. “You had me worried for a while there when you weren’t leaving your house and covering yourself in Cheetos dust.”Paloma giggled softly, “And now I’m getting covered in whipped cream.” She ignored Kate’s eye-roll, continuin

The hot water beat down on Kate’s tired body, doing little to ease the aches and pains of her exhausted muscles and absolutely nothing to diffuse the mental depletion she felt. Perpetually fatigued was now her permanent state of being, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. She hurried to work the shampoo through her now shoulder-length brown hair, keeping one eye on the baby monitor that flashed on the vanity. She closed her eyes momentarily, silently praying that everyone stayed asleep for just five more minutes. Bubbles tingled across her pink chipped toenails - a reminder from her and Paloma’s last day out alone, sans kids. She stifled a giggle, remembering how Colton had phoned her, asking her a million questions while squeals echoed in the background. Upon her return, he had met her at the door, black tee covered in spit-up and mashed banana while exhausted eyes stared at her gratefully. The click of the bathroom door dragged her from her thoughts, squinting eye

Colton’s wide eyes stared back at Kate, as she panted through yet another excruciating contraction; her entire pelvis spreading apart to allow their baby to enter the world. The floral tones of Bernadette’s perfume wafted through the room as she returned, snapping on a pair of blue latex gloves, a stack of blue sheets tucked under her arm. Another woman trudged behind, not clearly as enthused as Bernadette, sanitizing her hands before sliding on her own pair of gloves. Snapping her gum, she made her way over to the machine beside Kate’s bed, mature hazel eyes peering over square glasses to scan the paper slowly rolling from the machine.“Okay, Kate,” Bernadette chirped from the end of the bed, her short hair curled eloquently atop her head. Kate took in the swirls of brown, ebbing and flowing across her crown as she pushed through another surge of pain. “Kate,” Bernadette smiled, patting Kate’s bare leg to garner her atten

Shivering as she swept the blankets off her bloated body, Kate groaned, awkwardly clambering from the bed, one hand attempting to massage her lower back as she waddled to the bathroom. The sun had begun to rise, its rays just starting to seep through the small crack of their curtain. It bounced off Colton’s watch face, illuminating a soft glowy spot on the roof. She cast a glance over her shoulder, unable to help the smile that grew across her face at Colton’s muffled snores, his bare torso exposed with one inked hand resting atop it. His wedding ring glistened ever so slightly in the dewy dawn light. She’d always assumed married life would feel no different and for the first few weeks, aside from the bubbling excitement that they’d actually gone through with it, it hadn’t, but as the weeks turned to months, Kate grew to understand exactly why people did it. Knowing that Colton had wholeheartedly committed himself to her for the rest of his life was an

The car jounced down the dirt road, wheels spinning stray flecks of gravel through the air. The sky was almost pitch black now, a thick blanket filled with tiny stars that glinted brightly against the navy backdrop. The woods, still filled with the unsettling presence of flashlights, seemed eerier in the rearview, the few police cars that remained at the cottage shining from the glow of the kitchen light emanating from the window. Kate tugged at the threads of Colton’s sweatshirt, pulling the fabric over her mouth as she buried herself into the passenger seat. The radio announcer's voice drifted through the otherwise silent interior, talking about a new song being released by a popular female artist. Kate tried to focus on what he was saying, to push away the intrusive thoughts that were swirling through her mind, but his words turned into a mish-mash of nonsense, garbled sounds that made no sense to her. Colton’s body crumpled to the floor, the rifle discharging as it hit the scuffed floorboards; another loud pop burrowing into her eardrums. Attempting to stand, she clutched her stomach, huffing as she brought herself to her feet, watching in horror as a small team of officers, dressed in dark S.W.A.T vests, approached, their movements slow and controlled, methodically assessing the scene before them.“Kate!”Sandy’s voice cut through the mind-numbing noise, the warmth of her hand resting on Kate’s shoulder, preventing her from moving forward. Tucking her knees into her chest - as far as her pregnant stomach would allow - Kate covered her ears, consciously inhaling and exhaling through pursed lips in an attempt to steady her erratic heart. Somewhere in the lounge room, she heard Colton shuffling about, the harsh rake of the curtain rings sliding along the thick wooden rods, shading them from the view of the outside. He continued grumbling over the phone, the string of expletives showing no signs of easing as his heavy footsteps clunked past her, growing muffled in the weathered carpet as he retreated into the bedroom. Cabinet doors banged open, the clang and clatter of objects dispersing as he rifled through them before forcefully slamming them shut with an irritated grunt. The anxiety coursing through her triggered the baby, its tiny limbs poking and prodding her stomach as she strove to calm herself down.“You better have someone here soon, Sandy,” Colton spat in the background, the sound of ano

Keeping the knitted blanket wrapped loosely around her shoulders, she clasped the hot cup between her palms, inhaling the sweet nuttiness of her almond cappuccino, lovingly brought back by Colton from his morning stroll into town. The fresh air, thick with the scent of pine needles and earthy rain, consumed her, allowing her to breathe deeply for the first time in weeks, if not months. Casting a gaze out at the dense woodlands before her, she smiled. Even though she’d denied him multiple times, Colton’s insistence on bringing her out to Rhys’ reclusive cabin had been the best idea he’d had in a long time. They’d been there only two days and already she was feeling like a whole new person. Her gaze flittered to the back door as it swung open, Colton’s broad shoulders unclothed, his shirt being used t
