The weekend had fast approached and Kate was thankful, although she wasn’t as exhausted as usual. Colton had been keeping his bedfellows quiet and she had been managing to get a solid eight hours most nights. She’d seen Austin around here and there, but their conversations were short. Kate didn’t want to get involved with anyone even remotely related to Colton, and while he was gorgeous, she couldn’t help but question why a nice guy would be friends with an asshole like Colton James. There had to be something wrong with him, and she didn’t want to get too wrapped up in him before she found out.

“Come on, Kate. Have another one,” Paloma cried, setting down the shot glass in front of her. “You’ve been working so hard. Time to live a little.”

Kate laughed, downing the shot and wincing as the liquid burned her throat. “I’ve had more than enough. Let’s go and play pool. Those guys just left.”

She slid from the booth, grabbing Paloma’s hand and leading her over to the vacant table. Grabbing a pool cue, she prepped the table while Paloma went to get them some more drinks. Kate assumed that Paloma’s insistence had nothing to do with getting Kate drunk, rather taking her mind off her own troubles, so she didn’t resist.

“I found us some playing partners!” Paloma squealed as she returned to the table.

Kate rolled her eyes, unable to stifle the laugh that escaped her, as she looked up. Light brown eyes scanned two men before her. The one with his arm wrapped around Paloma’s olive shoulders was shorter with gelled brown hair and caramel skin, covered by tight jeans and a white shirt. Kate groaned as she took in the second man. She would recognize his face anywhere.

Colton.

Although she didn’t want to admit it, he looked so good, dressed in black jeans, a black band t-shirt, and black boots. His hair was messy, spiked by the rough hands that rushed through it and he smirked with smug satisfaction at her reaction.

She desperately wanted to tell Paloma that she would rather shove pins beneath her nails than play pool with Colton, but she could see how dreamy-eyed her friend was, gazing up at her handsome stranger. After her recent break-up, Kate just couldn’t deny her friend.

“This is Heath, and his friend, Colton. I told them they could play with us.”

Colton’s eyes glinted at Paloma’s choice of words. That was his forte, playing with women and then discarding them like they were garbage.

Kate reluctantly nodded. “I’m guessing you’re not on my team?”

Paloma shook her head sheepishly, allowing her slender frame to curve into the muscular physique of her companion. “Colton suggested us against you guys.”

Of course he had. It was exactly the kind of thing Colton would do. Kate downed the drink Paloma had set aside for her, wincing at the burn. Shoving the pool cue at Colton, she narrowed her eyes. “You break.”

He did so with ease, putting two balls away before straightening himself up. Black eyes stared at her, a smug smirk plastered on his handsome face. “Looks like we’re solids.”

Unable to tear her eyes off his, Kate was brought back to the game at hand by Paloma’s frustrated squeak. She had completely missed the white ball, instead driving the chalked cue tip into the green felt. Heath wrapped his arms around her and nodded towards Kate.

Snatching the cue back from Colton, Kate leaned against the table. She lined up her shot and tapped the tip of the cue against the white ball. Hands brushed against her hips, her breath hitching in her throat as she glanced up at the black pools that watched her with interest. She had missed her target completely, distracted by the way his fingers danced on the edge of her jeans.

Heath’s laugh brought her from her daze. "How much have you ladies had to drink?”

Kate stiffened, stepping away from the table, away from Colton. She shook her head, adjusting her focus to the man Paloma had nuzzled into. There was no point defending herself. What would she say? Your friend brushed his fingers along my jeans and I got distracted? The thought alone was pathetic. Instead, she let out a little laugh. “Maybe you guys should play alone.”

Leaning the cue against the table, Kate turned, her eyes scanning for the nearest exit before dashing to the door. She needed fresh air. Stepping out into the dimly lit alleyway, Kate allowed her body to rest against the grimy bricks. She closed her eyes, trying to suck up some courage to go back in there. She knew he was an asshole, and yet her body betrayed her every time he came close.

The side door opened. Kate glanced towards it, groaning at the sight of Colton’s tall figure stepping into the chilly night air. His head swiveled, glancing up and down the alleyway before finally resting on the small frame of Kate.

He smirked.

“What are you doing out here? The game just started.”

“I didn’t want to play with you.”

He stepped closer. The tattoos of his arms on full display as the lone light shone down on him. Kate had never really noticed them before, paid too much attention to the details. A black and grey leopard peeking out of some trees took up the entirety of his forearm. Blackened eyes took in her face, and Kate couldn’t help the shuddered breath that escaped her.

“But I think you do,” he grinned.

His body was in front of her now, his breath warm on her face. Kate tried to keep her eyes down, but his finger hooked beneath her chin, lifting her up to face him. His free hand lifted, hovering over the edge of her jeans, the same spot he had touched, the same spot she had fantasized about him touching over and over again.

“I think you’re just stubborn.”

His voice was huskier than Kate remembered, and it sent shivers cascading down the skin of her bare arms. She desperately wanted to say something, to tell him to fuck off but she was powerless. Her hips slipped forward only slightly, but enough for his fingers to brush against the denim.

Glancing up at him beneath dark lashes, she watched as his lip cinched between his teeth. His chest rose and fell faster than before and Kate wondered if she had the same effect on him that he had on her.

His mouth covered hers before she had a chance to think of it any longer. The fingers that had cupped her chin, now tangled in her hair, tilting her head to give him better access to her mouth. His tongue rolled against her lower lip, the steel of his tongue ring cooling the heat that brewed there. She could feel the jolts of electricity shooting from her hip, where his rough fingers brushed against the softness of her skin. Before she could stop them, one of Kate’s hands wrapped around the back of his neck, the other one fisting the soft material of his t-shirt.

Colton pressed closer to her, the hard lump in his jeans pressing against the junction of her thighs, and he groaned as Kate softly bit at his bottom lip.

She didn’t want to engage with him any further. She didn’t trust herself. The feeling of him, hard beneath her, made her more aroused than she wanted to admit. She didn’t want to think about how much further it would’ve gotten if his smarmy attitude hadn’t brought her back to reality.Once inside the bar, she slipped through the crowd, finding Paloma straddling Heath in a back booth. Kate took a deep breath, hoping her friend would see reason. She doubted it though. A few shot glasses littered the table and Kate knew Paloma was more than tipsy.“

Kate tossed and turned. In the depths of Colton’s apartment, she could hear the breathy moans of Paloma and Heath and she hoped it was keeping Colton wide awake. After a hot shower, she still wasn’t able to dull the sensation of him pressing up against her, the feel of his mouth on hers. She understood in that moment why women got hooked. He could make her feel things she hadn’t felt in such a long time. The problem was that he knew it, and he was an ass because of it.She groaned, rolling towards her nightstand. She shuffled through the drawer, pulling out her vibrator and laying back on the bed. She hated that he had this effect on her, that she wanted to feel him inside of her. Kate turned it on, muffling the vibration beneath her blankets as she allowed it to glide along her entrance. She was already completely aroused. The feeling of him had sent her into overdrive, the feel of his tongue ring agains

Avoiding Colton since their incident had been easier than Kate thought. He had started bringing women home again, and although the woman screamed and wailed and the bedhead banged viciously against the thin wall, Kate kept quiet. She didn’t want to draw his attention to her, and to be fair, after their time together, she understood. She hadn’t seen much of Austin and had been thankful for that too.But she knew it wouldn’t last forever.Returning home from her run, Kate climbed the staircase, wiping the sweat from her brow. She froze at the sight of his shirtless torso, his back once again covered in scratches, his hair messy and damp. He inhaled a deep draw of his cigarette and turned away.Kate’s stomach dropped. She hadn’t known what to expect but she thought it would be a snide comment, at the least. Scolding herself for wanting his attention, she skipped up the remaining steps and unlocked her front door.“You shouldn’t be smoking in the hallway. You sho

The day flew by, and soon it was time for Kate to meet Austin. She straightened out her dress, a long-sleeved white and pink floral number that finished at her mid-thigh, and flipped her wavy hair over her shoulders. She slid on her heels and touched up her makeup as she awaited Austin’s arrival. A moment later, a soft knock rapped on the door. Kate swung it open and enjoyed the darkening of Austin’s sapphire eyes as they raked over her figure.“Kate, you look…” he trailed off, stepped forward to plant a gentle kiss on her cheek. “Incredible.”“Thanks,” she murmured, grabbing her bag and stepping out into the hallway. “Not too shabby yourself.”The door of Colton’s apartment flung open as they began their descent down the staircase, Austin’s hand slipping a little too low on Kate’s back for her liking. She tried to shift under his grasp, but his hand stayed firmly glued. She furrowed her brows, taking in his smirk as he glanced over his shoulder at Colton.Ka

He trailed off as the woman giggled from the other side. “I’m glad you called me, Colt. I was hoping you would ignore my brother sooner rather than later.”Stilling completely, Austin pulled away from her, tugging up his jeans with vengeance burning through the sapphire of his iris.Kate grabbed at his hand, confusion etching across her delicate features. “Where are you going?”For a second, his eyes softened, taking in her flushed cheeks and concerned gaze. “I’m sorry, Kate. I’ve just-”A harsh groan broke through Austin’s words, Colton’s husky voice following. “Fuck me, Aria.”Austin snatched his hand away, charging through Kate’s apartment. She followed, trying desperately to adjust her clothing as she ran. As Austin barged through Colton’s bedroom door, Kate couldn’t help but shield her eyes. Colton was seated on the bed, his body slightly reclined as a blonde nestled between his legs. Her head bobbed, his fingers tangled in her hair, helping her ta

“So, how are things with Heath?” Kate murmured, ignoring the stern glance from the yoga instructor as she stretched out on her pink yoga mat, lifting her hips in the air and relishing the release of her aching muscles.Paloma let out a sly grin. “We’re just fuck buddies, but it’s so good. Nothing like it was with Dylan. We’d been together for so long, I’d forgotten what it was like to just be fucked with passion and desire, you know? With Dylan, we had to schedule it around Florence and we were never really in the mood. But now, Heath comes over and just slams me into the bed. It’s so hot.”The yoga instructor let out a stony ‘shh’, her eyes narrowing at Paloma’s vulgar language.“It’s good to see you getting out there again,” Kate hushed. “You had me worried for a while there when you weren’t leaving your house and covering yourself in Cheetos dust.”Paloma giggled softly, “And now I’m getting covered in whipped cream.” She ignored Kate’s eye-roll, continuin

“Sorry,” she breathed, trying to avoid his gaze. “I… I was coming to get my stuff.”Raising his eyebrows, disbelief etched on his stern features, Colton shook his head, “You look scared shitless. I’m offering to help you and instead of taking it, you just keep pushing every fucking button I have.”Running her fingers through her hair, Kate let out a shaky breath, “The note. “Did he… Did you call because of Colton? Did he do something to you?” Paloma asked, dark brows knitting together as she glanced between the front door and her friend’s flushed cheeks.“No. No, not at all. He was making sure no one was here. I got this note on my door,” Kate murmured, scooping up the note and her remaining belongings from the hallway. Caramel eyes trailed to Colton’s door, hoping to maybe catch a glimpse of him, but it was shut. Kate’s heart sunk.Passing Paloma the note, Kate took in her friend’s concerned features and murmured, “Do you think…. Do you think it could be...”“Harry? No,” Paloma shook her head adamantly, her silky black hair waving from side to side. “Someone should have called you to tell you he’s been released, considering everything he put you through. I’ll stay here tonight, but I wouldn’t worry too much about it, Kate,” she strained a smile, rubbing Kate’s arms soothingly; “It’s probably someone playing a sick joke.”Kate n

The hot water beat down on Kate’s tired body, doing little to ease the aches and pains of her exhausted muscles and absolutely nothing to diffuse the mental depletion she felt. Perpetually fatigued was now her permanent state of being, but she wouldn’t have it any other way. She hurried to work the shampoo through her now shoulder-length brown hair, keeping one eye on the baby monitor that flashed on the vanity. She closed her eyes momentarily, silently praying that everyone stayed asleep for just five more minutes. Bubbles tingled across her pink chipped toenails - a reminder from her and Paloma’s last day out alone, sans kids. She stifled a giggle, remembering how Colton had phoned her, asking her a million questions while squeals echoed in the background. Upon her return, he had met her at the door, black tee covered in spit-up and mashed banana while exhausted eyes stared at her gratefully. The click of the bathroom door dragged her from her thoughts, squinting eye

Colton’s wide eyes stared back at Kate, as she panted through yet another excruciating contraction; her entire pelvis spreading apart to allow their baby to enter the world. The floral tones of Bernadette’s perfume wafted through the room as she returned, snapping on a pair of blue latex gloves, a stack of blue sheets tucked under her arm. Another woman trudged behind, not clearly as enthused as Bernadette, sanitizing her hands before sliding on her own pair of gloves. Snapping her gum, she made her way over to the machine beside Kate’s bed, mature hazel eyes peering over square glasses to scan the paper slowly rolling from the machine.“Okay, Kate,” Bernadette chirped from the end of the bed, her short hair curled eloquently atop her head. Kate took in the swirls of brown, ebbing and flowing across her crown as she pushed through another surge of pain. “Kate,” Bernadette smiled, patting Kate’s bare leg to garner her atten

Shivering as she swept the blankets off her bloated body, Kate groaned, awkwardly clambering from the bed, one hand attempting to massage her lower back as she waddled to the bathroom. The sun had begun to rise, its rays just starting to seep through the small crack of their curtain. It bounced off Colton’s watch face, illuminating a soft glowy spot on the roof. She cast a glance over her shoulder, unable to help the smile that grew across her face at Colton’s muffled snores, his bare torso exposed with one inked hand resting atop it. His wedding ring glistened ever so slightly in the dewy dawn light. She’d always assumed married life would feel no different and for the first few weeks, aside from the bubbling excitement that they’d actually gone through with it, it hadn’t, but as the weeks turned to months, Kate grew to understand exactly why people did it. Knowing that Colton had wholeheartedly committed himself to her for the rest of his life was an

The car jounced down the dirt road, wheels spinning stray flecks of gravel through the air. The sky was almost pitch black now, a thick blanket filled with tiny stars that glinted brightly against the navy backdrop. The woods, still filled with the unsettling presence of flashlights, seemed eerier in the rearview, the few police cars that remained at the cottage shining from the glow of the kitchen light emanating from the window. Kate tugged at the threads of Colton’s sweatshirt, pulling the fabric over her mouth as she buried herself into the passenger seat. The radio announcer's voice drifted through the otherwise silent interior, talking about a new song being released by a popular female artist. Kate tried to focus on what he was saying, to push away the intrusive thoughts that were swirling through her mind, but his words turned into a mish-mash of nonsense, garbled sounds that made no sense to her. “Colton!”Her own voice rang in her ears, the sharp whistle of a gunshot pulsing deep in the chambers of her mind as all other noises diffused, dulling down to an almost non-existent whine. Colton’s body crumpled to the floor, the rifle discharging as it hit the scuffed floorboards; another loud pop burrowing into her eardrums. Attempting to stand, she clutched her stomach, huffing as she brought herself to her feet, watching in horror as a small team of officers, dressed in dark S.W.A.T vests, approached, their movements slow and controlled, methodically assessing the scene before them.“Kate!”Sandy’s voice cut through the mind-numbing noise, the warmth of her hand resting on Kate’s shoulder, preventing her from moving forward. Tearing away from her grasp, Kate stumbled forward, tripping over Preston’s extended leg and careening to the floor. She stuck out her hands, her wrists taking the brunt of the impact as s

Tucking her knees into her chest - as far as her pregnant stomach would allow - Kate covered her ears, consciously inhaling and exhaling through pursed lips in an attempt to steady her erratic heart. Somewhere in the lounge room, she heard Colton shuffling about, the harsh rake of the curtain rings sliding along the thick wooden rods, shading them from the view of the outside. He continued grumbling over the phone, the string of expletives showing no signs of easing as his heavy footsteps clunked past her, growing muffled in the weathered carpet as he retreated into the bedroom. Cabinet doors banged open, the clang and clatter of objects dispersing as he rifled through them before forcefully slamming them shut with an irritated grunt. The anxiety coursing through her triggered the baby, its tiny limbs poking and prodding her stomach as she strove to calm herself down.“You better have someone here soon, Sandy,” Colton spat in the background, the sound of ano

Stepping out onto the expansive back deck, Kate huddled into one of the wicker chairs, stretching out her legs to allow the tiny glimmer of sunlight to spatter across her sweats. Keeping the knitted blanket wrapped loosely around her shoulders, she clasped the hot cup between her palms, inhaling the sweet nuttiness of her almond cappuccino, lovingly brought back by Colton from his morning stroll into town. The fresh air, thick with the scent of pine needles and earthy rain, consumed her, allowing her to breathe deeply for the first time in weeks, if not months. Casting a gaze out at the dense woodlands before her, she smiled. Even though she’d denied him multiple times, Colton’s insistence on bringing her out to Rhys’ reclusive cabin had been the best idea he’d had in a long time. They’d been there only two days and already she was feeling like a whole new person. Her gaze flittered to the back door as it swung open, Colton’s broad shoulders unclothed, his shirt being used t

The musky scent of the courthouse irritated her nostrils, old wood and leather mingled with thick clouds of cologne, emanating from the men dressed in stiff suits as they walked past her, their shoes click-clacking against the linoleum floor. Leaning back, she rested her back against the pastel yellow concrete wall, a chill radiating through her spine, as she tugged her phone from her purse. She smiled at the presence of Colton’s name on the screen and the black love heart nestled beside it.Good luck, baby. I’ll be there as soon as I can. Paloma left with two trash bags,” Colton huffed, sliding the final box from their car across the bedroom floor, watching with a wince as it skidded into Kate’s leg. “Sorry.”“Ow.” She dropped the shirt she was folding, rubbing her leg before frowning up at him. “She forgot a lot of things, and it was easier to pre-fold my clothes and put them into boxes, rather than chuck them into trash bags again.”Knowing it was best not to argue while her sweet features housed a scowl, Colton sunk onto the bed. “D’ya want help?”After spending the first twenty minutes tidying the chaos that was Colton’s clothes, his shirts and shorts scrunched and stuffed into the spaces her absence had left, the remainder of her task was relatively simple. “I’ve just got the rest of this box and the one you just brought in left,&
