I’d shrugged out of the suit jacket on my way down the stairs, throwing it at Dmitri as he followed me, still chuckling. For the first time ever, I found my way down to the sparring room before Nathan. He wasn’t long behind us though, with Sophie on his heels carrying in some of my work out clothes and a pair of running shoes.
“I’m not changing clothes,” I barked, making her flinch. I had so much rage ripping through me I didn’t even feel a hint of guilt for my Beta’s reaction. “Sometime today Nathan,” I growled at him impatiently.
Dmitri wrapped an arm around his sister, pulling her towards the far corner and out of the way while still laughing. Tossing his own suit jacket at the siblings, Nathan stalked towards me, a snarky grin on his face.
He came at me, swinging for my face. I ducked; grabbing his wrist as it flew past me and his arm too, spinning him around towards the wall. He caught himself as I let go; only stumbling slightly before coming at me again.
I leapt backwards as he lunged forward to grapple my chest. Dropping down I swung out a leg and swept him off his feet so he landed with a thud on the mats. There was a crack as I elbowed him in the ribs and I rolled back up to my feet and stepped away.
He used a kick flip to get back on his feet, eyeing me coldly. It was rare for me to score a hit on him, and every time I did, he pushed me harder. Deciding on a new tactic, he crouched low, and lunged again, for my midsection this time. I spun on my heel, bringing my knee up to crack him right in his nose, blood dripped down his face as he righted himself to come at me again.
The dark shadow I’d grown fond of in Dmitri’s, darkened Nathan’s eyes. I smirked at him, welcoming the challenge. He’d been too easy to hit thus far, and it was doing nothing to help me work through my anger.
He moved faster, but still not fast enough. He came at me trying to grapple my arm for leverage. Grinning, because I remembered the move from the many times we’d spared, I dropped back down to the mat. Time seemed to move in slow motion as he overextended his reach. Grabbing his wrist as I dropped, I kicked my foot up into his gut, flipping him over me to slam down on his back, hard. Still holding his wrist I wrapped my legs around his arm, pressing my foot on his shoulder as I pulled his wrist towards my chest.
There was a popping sound, a growl, then the tap-tap-tap of his other and on the mat. The satisfaction of finally besting Nathan, just this once was short lived. It felt like an endless inferno of rage washing through me burned the thrill to ash. I did release his arm though, and rolled back up onto my feet.
“Sophie, take Nathan to see Dr Martinez, she’s already expecting you both,” Dmitri had finally stopped laughing, and calmly passed out orders. I’d definitely broken Nathan’s nose; probably dislocated his shoulder and cracked a rib.
Our betas made their way out of the room, giving me a wide berth as I paced back and forth, still seething. As soon as they were safely out of the room Dmitri stepped towards me, those terribly beautiful black eyes with their ice blue center shinning at me. “You want to try someone your own size, Princess,” he growled, grinning at me.
I stopped pacing, and cocked my head, looking him over. A smirk danced over my lips, “Actually, I would,” I agreed stepping towards him. He didn’t move an inch. This wasn’t going to be like this morning when he’d tried to chase me around and catch me. Nathan moved faster than he could, and I moved faster than that. This time he was waiting for me to come to him instead.
He stood there, taking the full force of my hit as I swung at his chest. He took another and another, not moving; just staring at me. Almost all of my training had been focused on getting away, or escaping a hold so I could get away, and a few ways to disable so I could escape and get away. I didn’t know what to do with someone that was just going to stand there and not come at me at all. Stepping away from him I growled with all the frustration I felt.
“Is that all you have, Princess? You hit like a girl,” the corner of his mouth twitched upwards. I swung for his face, getting my wrist caught in his hand. He pulled upwards before I could turn my body and use his hold to flip him over my hip. I tried to use my other hand to pry his open, successfully getting that one caught as well.
Crossing my arms as he turned me away from him, he brought them down and pulled my hands around behind me so that I was forced to hug myself. “That’s enough!” he growled, as I struggle to find a way out of the hold. With an exasperated sigh, he brought his head down and bit my neck. My whole body froze, a new fire trying to burn out the other one. He dropped my hands and stepped around me cautiously.
I embraced the comforting buzz that vibrated through me when I phased into a shift, but it settled over me a little differently this time. Instead of being human one second and a white wolf the next, one second I was just standing before him, the next I’d phased out of my clothes, still human. “You’re turn,” I purred, the sudden lustful need to claim what was mine had consumed what was left of my ire.
He stood in shock, staring at me, “Don’t make me rip that suit off your body, you look very good in it, but it’s in my way right now,” I warned, licking my lips.
Gaining control of himself, he grinned but I decided he was moving too slow. I stepped into him to help remove the obstacles in my way, he had too many of those dress shirts anyway. As soon as I ripped it open, buttons flying around the room I used it to pull him against me. Our lips crashed together. Savagely attacking his lips, I helped him undo his pants. They fell to his ankles, allowing him to step out of them after he kicked his shoes off. Yes, this was very nice, my expertly chiseled and tanned sex god, unencumbered and ready for me.
He wrapped his arms around me as we kissed, his hands grabbing my ass and lifting me off my feet. I wrapped my legs around his waist, my arms tight around his neck. Everywhere our skin met sent sparks zipping through me. His lips never broke from mine as he carried me across the room until my back pressed against the wall.
He pulled his lips from mine, working them over my jaw and down my neck. His teeth bit a little harder, and I tossed my head back to give him access. The sensation of his teeth grazing over his mark was so euphoric it sucked all the air from my lungs as my body moved on its own to arch up into it.
Adjusting me in his grasp, his lips moved lower, closing over my nipple. He sucked it into his mouth, biting gently as his tongue swirled over it. He was toying with me. I would have none of it. Not today. I needed more, and I needed it now. I brought my lips to his ear, nipping his earlobe as I purred seductively, “Dmitri, my Alpha…”
A thunderous growl rumbled in his chest, any restraint left in him came undone. He pressed me against the wall harder, shifting his grip from around my hips, to under my legs, spreading my thighs open wider. I moaned against his lips as he plunged into the depths of me. He twisted that blazing need in me, drawing it together until it became so condensed that it exploded. My nails tore into his shoulders, making him groan softly.
He set me on my feet, and pushed me back down onto mat. Kneeling between my legs, he yanked me towards him. His thrusts were smooth and measured, hitting just the right spot to wreck my body with wave after wave of increasing ecstasy. I was gasping for air when he finally came undone, one last primal growl sending a shiver down my spine as he withdrew and rolled over onto his back staring up at the ceiling, trying to catch his own breath.
“So it’s not always clothes and all,” he mused between breaths. He’d been intrigued by how when I shifted, my clothes seemed to stay with me so that when I phased back, I was still fully dressed.
I struggled to make my body obey my commands to roll over and lay my head on his chest. He pulled me against him, kissing my forehead as I rested it on his chest. I smiled feeling wholly content in the moment.
My smile widened, “Do you think Nathan will hold it against me our next session that I finally kicked his ass?”
Dmitri’s rich laugh bellowed under me, “Oh Princess,” I could feel pride radiating off of him, “You had him tap out in under a minute. He’s definitely going to hold a grudge.” His laugh filled the room.
I tried not to grin so smugly, “Really? It felt longer than that. Should we go check on him? And Sophie.” The guilt finally hitting me as I remembered the way she flinched at my words.
“I really hope that new trick of yours is something you can at will,” I knew the sly smile on his lips without looking up at him. I could imagine exactly what he had in mind to make use of such a skill. “We probably should go let everyone know that you didn’t kill me once you were done with Nate,” he teased.
Groaning, I sat up and looked over at the pile of my clothes. “Do you think if I concentrate really hard, they’ll just appear back on my body?”
“Gods I hope the hell not,” he huffed, “I can’t imagine having to repeatedly undress you every time you decide to act like a brat!” He was still grinning.
“Spoil sport,” I grumbled, crawling towards my clothes.
I yelped when he landed a sound smack squarely on my ass, making both cheeks sting. “I’m not too tired to put you over my knee right now,” he warned.
“Promises, promises,” I mocked, skittering out of his reach as he grabbed for my ankle.
“That’s 1, Princess,” he promised with a smile as he scooped up his pants off the floor.
I gathered my clothes together and held them in a bunch against my chest. Squeezing my eyes shut I tried to will them back onto my body. After a moment Dmitri chuckled, “The Goddess must have forgiven me after all.” I stuck my tongue out at him, sorting through the pile to find my underwear. “That’s 2.” I loved the way his threats sent a shiver through me, almost as much as I loved when he made good on those threats.
We pulled most of our clothes back on, his shirt had no buttons left and hung open, while I opted to remain barefoot. There would be no mistaking how our sparring session had gone. We made our way upstairs and over to the medical wing of the house. The receptionist pointed us towards the exam room with Nathan and Sophie in it as we walked through the doors, blushing as she took in our appearance.
Nathan was sitting on the exam table glaring at Sophie as she tried to show him his face in her little compact mirror. That glare was nothing compared to the look he shot me, “You broke my fucking nose!”
I shrugged, “You left your face wide open,” I explained using the same tone he’d used on me whenever I made a mistake while sparring. “I am sorry about your shoulder though,” I winced as I saw how his arm hung at his side, I’d definitely dislocated it. In my fit of rage I don’t know which sound registered first the pop or the tap on the mat.
Dmitri put his body between us, although I wasn’t sure whom he was trying to protect from whom. “Fighters back to your own corners,” he chuckled. “What did Isabel say?”
“She went to go get a splint for his nose; she thinks it could possibly heal to a bruise in a few days. She wanted to wait for you to put his shoulder back into place though, to hold him down.”
“Has she already reset his nose?” I asked, stepping around Dmitri to look more closely at Nathan’s face. She nodded. “Lem’me try something?” I tilted my head waiting for him to agree. After glaring at me he gave me a stiff nod.
That first night in the woods with the pack, the Goddess had taken over my body, bit my tongue and licked the face of a young boy stuck in the middle of his shift, unable to push through the pain; afterwards he shifted effortlessly and painlessly. I pressed my thumb against my slightly sharper canine tooth, pricking the skin. “Don’t move,” I ordered with a hint of sway. I traced my bleeding thumb over the bridge of his nose, gently so as not to shift the bones underneath. Stepping back I tried to will some of my healing abilities into him through the blood.
By the time Dr Isabel Martinez had returned with the supplies she’d gone for, the dark purple bruise over his nose and under his eyes had turned a more bluish-green and the cut across the bridge of his nose had sealed shut, almost completely healed. There was no way to see if the bones had mended at all beneath the skin, but it did look like it’d healed a lot. My thumb had completely healed over as well, not even a pink mark, just a smear of blood.
I would’ve thought she’d have gotten used to the strange unexplainable things that happened around me. Instead she insisted on taking a few x-rays to gauge just how fast he was healing. None of us mentioned that I’d used some of my blood to help it along; it was one of the unspoken agreements between the four of us to never expose any new abilities that I happened to exhibit.
Nathan’s nose was healing at a rate that would have him back to his naturally unhappy scowl by morning. His shoulder on the other hand… It’d taken a heavy dose of sway and Dmitri holding him down for Isabel to get his arm back into place. I assumed my blood would also help it heal to brand new by morning. He was still bruised enough at our regular dinner with the rest of the members in the house for me to gloat about finally getting the best of him. I did not, however, mention how quickly I’d done it.
It felt weird, helping to move Nathan’s things into Dmitri’s old apartment suite, across the hall from Sophia’s. We’d remodeled and moved into the suite of rooms that were once occupied by the twins’ parents, and now this suite was sitting empty and unused. It made sense to have all four of us close together, but it still felt weird. Sophie was urging Nathan to remodel the rooms, but he’d just grumbled about how it was fine the way it was. He did not object to my insistence that he at least refurnish the rooms, and let us get rid of all of Dmitri’s old furniture. Almost every first for us had happened in those rooms, with that furniture. Even though we’d agreed to start fresh when we moved, as not all of his first memories were of me, I couldn’t completely let go of it all. Most of the enforcers were helping us all to move furniture in and out of rooms, including my 6 newly trained female warriors. Sophie, with her OCD level organization skills, was wo
We’d barely stepped past the threshold of our door before his hands moved to liberate my body from their confines. His teeth nipping at his mark on my neck coaxed soft moans from my throat as his hands moved. “Mine,” his deep voice growled both a question and a claim as he palmed my newly bared breasts. I gave him a quick nod. Stepping out of the pants he’d opened and pushed just past my hips and shrugging out of his embrace, I knelt on the floor before him, sitting back on my heels with my hands palm up on my thighs. I submitted control completely to him, just as he’d asked for. I looked up at him. His devilish smile sent warm wave of desire through me. I was already wet and his smile told me he knew it. We watched each other as he moved around me and sat on the plush bench at the foot of our bed. He crooked a finger at me and leaned back slightly. I obeyed the silent command, slinking forward on my hands and knees. My arms folded be
‘Where the fuck have you been?’ I growled angrily at my other half, not caring that Dmitri could hear the exchange, but also feeling a sense of relief. ‘Dormiam liberos meos et somnia mecum,’ her melodic voice enchanted us, relaxing our minds and bodies until our eyes closed and we were whisked away from the physical world. I opened my eyes to find the four of us, the Goddess, Dmitri, his wolf and myself, standing the in the middle of our meadow at the center of the woods, where our pack met to shift at each full moon. Even though we were on the waxing side of the new moon, the bright white orb hung in the inky sea of stars above us in her full glory. Dmitri’s wolf gave a deep bow to my twin, her hair silver and straight instead of red curls like mine, but still the same face and body. Naturally, none of us were wearing any clothes. She gave him a nod, and he moved to slide up against my side, positioning me between Dmitri and his wolf
I didn’t get much sleep, crawling out of bed before the sun even peeked over the horizon. Dmitri on the other hand had had no problem falling back asleep, but was still a pain in the ass to get out of bed. He tried to convince me to stay in bed just a little longer, but I needed to do something, anything except sit still while my thoughts swallowed me. The key was getting out of the bed and putting clothes on to deter his dirty mind. Nathan was nowhere to be seen as we arrived in the sparring room, but I usually wasn’t up quite this early. ‘Are you sure that you want to still train this morning?’ Nathan’s voice hit our minds, making us stop dead in our tracks. We had started to run my usual warm up drills while waiting on him to join us. ‘Wow, new luxury bed and spacious rooms and he’s suddenly late for everything,’ I teased, making Dmitri grin. ‘We’re already warmed up, what’s taking you so long?’ I could tell he was annoyed by my ban
It would never cease to amaze me, the soft gentle glow that emanated from the perfectly smooth porcelain skin of the creature that slept peacefully in the bed beside me. I would’ve believed her to be a goddess even if I hadn’t known she was literally a goddess, or a piece of one. The concept gave me headaches if I thought about it too much. I blinked; willing my wolf’s gaze away. The glow faded as he begrudgingly separated his sight from my own. She still looked impossibly perfect. And she was mine. “Are you really going to lay there and stare at me?” Her sleepy green eyes looked up at me from where her head rested on my chest. The sweetest little mewling sounds escaped her lips as she stretched against me. My body was already responding to her movements. It didn’t matter how many times I satiated that primal need inside me, I always craved more of her. It was as if my cock had a mind of its own, already getting hard, eager to plunge i
The four of us stood together on the front steps, waiting for my uncle to make his appearance. I was going to do my damnedest to charm him out of our lives. That is if I could keep my temper under control, and Dmitri’s. I couldn’t tell if he realized it or not, but I could feel him chomping at the bit for a little violence. I should’ve had Nathan find a way to let him blow off some steam in training this morning instead of tossing a ball around for his own amusement. I rolled my shoulders back as the black car came into view at the end of the road. It was time to put on my happy face and play nice, the chatter in our group link was echoes of the same sentiment. Dmitri’s arm curled around my waist, pulling me against him as the car pulled up. His smile showed off all his teeth as he climbed out of the car. He looked at all of standing there waiting for him, “I hardly expected you to greet me at the door again.” The car pulled away as he shut the door an
Once the Alpha of all Alphas took his leave, the rest of the evening passed in the typical fashion. We had dinner in the main dining room with the other pack members living in the pack house. Nathan led a group training session with me, Sophie and our female enforcers; they were learning faster than he’d expected. We had our nightly close of day meeting, to discuss the day and tomorrow’s schedule. We talked less about my uncle than I thought we would’ve, he was spending yet another night in a hotel in a nearby city, outside our pack’s territory. By the time it was just Dmitri and I left in our suite, it was nearing midnight. I’d curled up in the corner of the leather couch that sat before the wall of bookshelves in our sitting room, barely registering our Betas leaving as my eyelids tried to drag themselves down over my eyes. “Selene,” Dmitri’s deep voice beside my ear sent a warm tingle down my spine. “You can’t keep burning the candle at both ends, P
My eyelids fluttered open at the sound of Nathan’s voice in my head, ‘I’m supposed to try and talk you out of training this morning, and he all but ordered it last night because you seemed so tired.’ Nathan had never seemed to like me, but he at least seemed to respect my decision to push myself when it came to training. It’d been a source of contention between him and his Alpha, but he was the only one who remained impartial about my status and had enough skill to train me in the way that I needed. ‘Let’s let him have this one, just for today. If you’re still up for an early morning session, you could gather up Lalita and the girls for an impromptu set.’ If there was anyone he liked less than me, it was the female shifters I’d chosen to have trained as my enforcers, even if he did agree that strategically, they were less conspicuous out in public. ‘If it’s all the same, I’d like to run the perimeter this morning and check in with the
If you've made it all the way to end of this chapter in Selene's journey, then I hope that you've enjoyed the ride thus far. The next and final chapter of her life "Rite of War" should start posting around December of 2023. If you feel like being encouraging, and you have a minute or two to spare, please add a book review/comment. I don't know if it helps boost the story, but I do know that they boost my mood
I didn’t know how long I stood there, just staring at the lump in my hand as the thumping slowed to a stop. But I could still feel its pulse in my fingertips. Not fingers exactly, something more akin to monster hands. I found myself wondering if they’d be as pristinely white as the short velvety fur coving my arm if they weren’t coated in blood. “Selene…” Someone said my name, but they sounded too far away for me to recognize the voice. The dead lump rolled off my fingertips, falling to the ground with a wet thud. I didn’t feel anything now that it wasn’t pulping in my hand. I was numb and hollowed out, just like the lifeless husk at my feet.&nb
The sky was completely free of even the barest wisp of a cloud. It was as if the gods were watching, and had declared that nothing obstruct their view of the fight they’d been promised. There weren’t even any birds singing in the forest around our little meadow in the middle of the woods. Someone was going to die here today. Sophie had done well. A ten foot circle was clearly marked in the center of the grass with a larger circle marked around it another ten feet out. Beyond that, two white tents stood up on opposite sides of each other. I was supposed to do all of this, but the goddess wouldn’t settle for anything less than a full twenty-four hours. I had to kill someone today. I knew that I was physically capable of doing it. I was just a little iffy on if I had the conviction to kill her in such a gruesome way. It would’ve been much easier to just order her to stop breathing. But blood had to be spilt. I’d be rem
I felt a little guilty for leaving Blake to deal with Selene’s possession all night. Now I owed him, Kelly and Sophie big. I just couldn’t risk that she’d find a way to seduce me if we were alone together. She curled up beside Blake on the sofa, under a throw blanket with her head on his lap. At least he’d managed to get her to sleep before she was set to fight to death in a couple hours. Blake looked exhausted himself, like he hadn’t slept a wink and brought his finger to his lips in a shushing motion when he saw me. ‘How much trouble did she give you?’ His shrug
It wasn’t too hard to babysit a goddess once I started approaching the situation like I was taking care of my own little sister when she much younger. Aside from having a filthy vocabulary and an overwhelming sense of entitlement, it was just like taking care of a ten year old girl. She played in the water like she was a nymph, basked in the sun until it got too warm, preferred sweets and junk food over veggies, playing dress up with the plethora of clothes in the closet, and sitting on the floor in front of me while I brushed and braided her long, unruly curly locks for her. “She chose well with you,” she sighed contentedly as she watched me clean up our dinner dishes.
“I don’t understand, what is going on?” Alex stared at me as I watched Dmitri storm down the hall. I wrapped an arm around her and pulled her out of the hall, “I don’t know yet either, but I’ll let you know what I can when I find out. Ok love?” She frowned at me, “Meaning you have to leave early this morning.” “You know I don’t want too,” I brushed the hair out of her face, “and in just one more day, almost all of this craziness will be done and over. Then I can ask Dimi and Selene to let us have a few days out at the cabin.&rdq
Nathan ran back to spend his day with Candice, some kind of last day with her mate bullshit. Dmitri had shifted back into his wolf to carry the goddess in Selene’s body out to their hideaway cabin, since she was deadlocked in human form. I was tasked with grabbing a motorbike for Dmitri to ride back on, since I’d be staying out there with Selene. ‘There’s been a change of plans,’ I linked to Kelly as soon as I was close enough. ‘Did you guys find Selene?’ ‘Yes, but she’s not herself today, so we’re spending the day out at the cabin,’ I expl
It wasn’t hard to see that everyone had picked up on Selene’s complete lack of interest in everything around her. But just like everyone else, I said nothing. After the report Nathan gave me of the test run he’d put together for her, she seemed broken in a way that none of us knew how to heal. I couldn’t help but feel that things were only going to get worse. If ‘killing’ a statue had this effect on her, what was going to happen when she actually took a life? I cursed myself for letting her set the terms to all or nothing. Someone had to die, and I was starting to worry that she’d let it be her instead of having to take a life herself. Traditions and laws be d
There was definitely something off about Selene tonight, but no one seemed to want to voice anything about it. I was willing to bet that the only person that would’ve spoken up, was Blake, but she’d ordered him to stay with his mate for the rest of the day and even arranged to have their diner brought up to them so that Kelly wouldn’t have to tax herself any further by dealing with more people. She kept staring off into space throughout the meal. Clearly her mind was somewhere else. But she still managed to fake a smile, and nod at the appropriate times as the conversations prompted. She didn’t even lean into Dmitri’s touch, which struck me as more odd than her lack of banter.&
