Maxwell overcame the small distance between them and checked on the child, who opened her first smile at him as soon as he uncovered her face. He smiled too and Anna saw the beautiful dimples that appeared on his cheeks, and decided that she would use that to differentiate him from the man she had left behind. “It's just the two of us.” He replied, looking at the baby. “What's his name?” Maxwell asked and everyone was silent, as Anna hadn't yet put a name to the child. “Baby.” Anna replied, frowning. “We can't call a little wolf a baby forever, can we? He won't inspire respect if everyone calls him baby when he turns eighteen.” He asked without taking his eyes off the child. Anna suddenly made a decision that surprised everyone, especially Maxwell. “Do you have any suggestions?” She asked, staring at him as she pushed the child into his arms. Maxwell stared at her, seemed unsure for a moment, but then turned his eyes back to the child in his arms and smiled. “What
Anna's father was a little worried that she wouldn't approve of him making so many decisions for her, and was prepared for her to refuse. But the sparkle in her eyes didn't leave him in doubt for long. “Yes, I do, Dad. I want everything I can have, and I want to be able to give it to my son too. I want to embrace this new world as if it were my own country. In fact, I never want to go back to the United States again.” Anna was so excited that she didn't notice that her last sentence made her father uncomfortable. “All we need now is a crib...” said Anna, looking around. There was a large television attached to the wall and a chest of drawers just below it. She was disappointed to find nothing of a child there. “Do you really think we weren't going to prepare a room for the baby?” Her father smiled and pointed with his chin to one of the doors in the room. There was another on the right, which she guessed was the bathroom. Anna went to the door indicated and opened it.
A nanny was hired to look after Ian when Anna wasn't at home, but Maxwell liked to spend a lot of time with his son. Sometimes Anna would notice him whispering something in Ian's ear, who would giggle happily. She tried to listen once to what they were talking about, but didn't understand anything that was said. Ian held out his arms to Maxwell every time he was at home and became agitated when he heard his voice, calming down only when his father took him in his arms. Anna was jealous, but she didn't want to interfere in her son's happiness, so she allowed it without getting involved. Maxwell often invited her to dinner and let her make the orders, so that she could get used to the language. This also helped Anna adapt to the country. Her father was always willing to stay with Ian on these occasions, as Anna didn't trust leaving him with the nanny. She demanded that a hidden camera be placed in Ian's room, where the nanny spent the night, to keep an eye on her, and watched every
She stared at him defiantly. “Anna...” “Where's that tramp you let take my son?” She asked rudely, and downed the shot of cognac in one gulp and poured herself another. “She's not what you said. I know that in the United States that's an offensive reference... Her name is Geiza and she's my girlfriend.” Anna, on hearing this, had the urge to throw the glass at him, but instead took the whole drink in one go, and again poured herself more. “Anna, be careful. You're not used to it...” “No more fucking being careful!” She said, knowing it was the first time she'd used that language. But she had to vent her anger at herself somehow. She took another drink and refilled it, already feeling a little dizzy. “You can't treat a guest of mine like that. And be careful how you treat the nanny, because here, if you mistreat her and she reports it, you'll be prosecuted!” He said angrily, but not as out of it as Anna. “I'll leave your guests alone, as long as y
Maxwell blinked before he understood what those words really meant. And when he did, he was stunned. She kept staring at him, as if waiting for an answer. And he didn't know what to say in the face of what was definitely an unusual situation. “Since when?” Maxwell finally managed to think of something to keep her talking before he did what was on his mind every time he saw her. It was only when she wasn't there that he managed not to think about her and what he wanted to do with her. “Ever since I saw you for the first time.” She said and raised her bottle as if to toast him. Maxwell understood that all the storm she had brought was really just a jealousy crisis. “You thought I was Adam. I saw your look of recognition as soon as you came in here.” “Still, that was the moment I fell in love.” “And why didn't you say so before? Why only now?” Anna stared into his confused eyes and smiled. She was so drunk that she no longer cared about humiliating herself.
Adam loved Anna. Maxwell had no doubt about his brother's feelings. Ryan told him things that he knew were the behavior of a man in love. His contacts in Chicago told him everything that happened, and his brother never acted like that with any woman. Perhaps if he had told Anna what was happening with Adam, she wouldn't be there, snuggled in his arms, snoring contentedly. And if Anna had decided to leave with Adam... Now he couldn't allow that to happen. He couldn't give up on her and his son, Ian. And she had a card up her sleeve for such an event, which she hoped she would never have to use. She had made a mistake by lying with him. She should have let him get on with his life and his relationship with Geiza. Now it was too late for regrets. There was no going back and no longer longing for her like someone lost in the desert longs for water. And although her secret couldn't be revealed, one day she would be a creature of her own kind. But he would allow her to live as a human,
Helen's eyes widened in surprise, but in a few minutes, Maxwell released her, and taking a napkin, wiped his mouth and turned to her. He already knew her anxieties. “You'll forget what happened here, when I hugged you.” He said and pointed to the table. “Sit back down, and it'll be as if I got up now.” She obeyed. “Helen, I want you to listen carefully to my words. Put your feet on the ground and think about your future. You can achieve many good things in your life. It's not too late to pursue your studies. Thanks for the coffee.” He said and left in a hurry. Taking advantage of the fact that there was no babysitter in the room, he went into Ian's room and found him standing over his crib. He smiled when he saw him, and Maxwell came over and kissed him on the forehead. He started to shout Daddy, but Maxwell didn't want to stay there and risk running into Anna that morning. He wanted her to have time to assimilate what had happened and believed that he would let her decide whe
Anna turned to her, and felt another twinge in her head as she frowned. “Why? Are you upset with me?” “No. Not at all. It's just that I need some time... I've decided to resume my studies. Feel free to say goodbye and find another nanny who can stay... I know a few young women myself...” “Stop!” Anna interrupted her. “I'll pay for your studies without compromising your salary. You can take any course you like at the college where I study... That way you can continue to look after Ian. While you're away studying, I'll look after him myself. I don't trust anyone else to do that.” “You're being very generous.” “There's no generosity in that. I need you and I have to make sure you stay. By the time you finish college and go into your profession, Ian will be old enough to tell if someone mistreats him. Don't think I don't watch you. You've been like a mother to him, and he loves you like one. I have to thank you for the opportunity to give a little back, because
